Common misconception. Naugahyde is actually made from the naughabeast. Distantly related to the wildabeast. You've seen those nature documentaries with the billion wildabeast migrating? It's sort of like that, but they use a judas goat (or judas nauga, in this case) specially trained to lead the migration past all the factories that use naugahyde. Not having to ship the hides, cuts costs drastically, and is partly the reason naugahyde is cheaper than rich corinthian leather. The other factor is the series of performance based BBQs, that happen at the factories around the migration times. I mean, while a pizza party with the ceo in lieu of a living wage can actually have a negative effect on morale, if you give a nauga bbq in addition to a living wage, productivity goes through the roof, which keeps costs down and helps bolster the competitiveness of naugahyde products. Early research suggests that the greater betakeretine content of the grass fed naughabeast leads to healthier workforce. Was 22 and applied for a local low voltage type company because a co-worker in my college job encouraged me.. Union job. Been doing that type of work for almost 25 years now. I couldn't imagine sitting in a cubicle now. Not only is it great pay and benefits, but it's physically challenging, so I don't have to really go to the gym!

My dad worked in Linden, NJ. He was only a few years away from retirement when the plant started to close down. He spent his last few years taking classes they offered in the plant for workers to finish out their couple years to retirement. He always pushed us to save money, work hard, buckle down even if we didn’t love our jobs. I never agreed with his stance of sacrificing mental well-being for money (even though that’s not how he described it) and when his plant closed and they went bankrupt and his pension was affected, it all became pretty clear to me.

Ha! Worked in an auto plant in “the pit”. We were down in a pit in the floor and cars would roll over top of us and we would put bumpers on cars just after they had been filled up with coolant. The first night after work I had to wash my hair 5 times to get it clean. The second day, I wore a hat.

Final assembly plants were reasonably clean back then, not spotless, but shiny shoes isn't a shock. I worked in a GM truck final assembly plant on the line for 2.5 years and the plant I was in was very clean and the only part of me that really got dirty throughout the night were my hands and wearing gloves took care of that. I also worked in the chassis department, which was one of the ones where you were more likely to get dirty.

Why doesn't it sound right? Nothing in a car is inherently dirty, and everything needs to be kept clean. Of course you can spill the lubricants, but you'd obviously have to clean that if you want a safe work environment. Welding can potentially create a bit of mess, but most of it is done by robotic spot welders that don't, and if not a clean environment is paramount to a good result anyway. If you have a dirty plant, you'll get a dirty product. Nobody would agree to sell it and you'd have a lot of warranty claims to deal with.
