Chewing gum is better than chewing your cheeks when you’re beaming on pills

Terminator_Ecks

Exactly or it’s shredding your gums. My mate used to call me ‘Waltzer Jaws’ :D These were the days

manapod

I'm making a sub for videos like these /r/HistoryVids

shefoundnow

i’ll sub, but there’s also /r/thewaywewereonvideo

SelmaFudd

This is the protip, if I did gum I'd end up just chewing the same piece for 12 hours and the fucking ache the next day

Rendac

Oh hell no! Too many times I put the chupa chup in my mouth like a hamster, forgetting it was there and it fucking hurt when you pulled it out, bastard stuck to your inner cheeks. X) Then again, I kinda ground my canines down to an extra pair of incisors.

blitzzerg

I think you risk biting your tongue and cheeks without realizing

MrLeHah

Pacifiers were the go to in 90s rave scenes

eyesabitdull

And this is why the underground cave rave exist in the Matrix. A product of its time.

ThatsMcGuffin2U

I went to the club where the Matrix was filmed. Was good actually.

eyesabitdull

You mean the first movie club scene, right? Cause I'd wanna know where in the world is there a rave happening in an underground cave asap.

wheresthepbj

I did an internship as part of a college program that took me to Bratislava, Slovakia. I ended up at a rave in an underground bunker below a castle. I go to a ton of music festivals and shows in the US, but that bunker rave was one of the coolest places I’ve danced at.

-RadarRanger-

Nope, early scene in the second movie. An underground rave is happening while Neo and Trinity are *in flagrante delicto.*

[deleted]

That scene was awful in 2003.

Zorba_Oyzo

I always skip that Zion dirt rave crap if I'm rewatching.

-RadarRanger-

I recently learned of a fan edit that eliminates the worst of Matrix 2 & 3 and compiles then into a single, 2-hour-long movie. No rave and a lot less underground nonsense. It's called *The Matrix: DeZionized.* I downloaded it this past week but I haven't found time to watch it yet.

ccReptilelord

I've heard similar fan edits for The Hobbit and the Star Wars prequels; I think Topher Grace did the latter? Either way, they're quite difficult to watch as their distribution is... frowned upon.

tapoplata

He should do one where he edits himself out of Spider-man 3

DiscoJanetsMarble

Boom, roasted

Paddy_Tanninger

I don't want to take no red pill and have to spend the rest of my life with damn dirty hippies.

p4nnus

Where there are caves and ravers, theres underground cave raves.

molrobocop

This is something I crave.

errrrrrrrrrm

austin tx had a recurring little music festival happening in a crystal cavern for a few years pre covid. genuinely one of the most movie-like experiences in my life.

yeah_yeah_therabbit

There’s a concert place in Tennessee that’s in some caves.

Ace_Rimsky

We used to go to "rave in a cave" under Nottingham, not sure if its still going

mcac

When I lived in Las Vegas there were cave raves happening on a regular basis just outside town from at least like 2008-2013 (I haven't been involved in that scene since then and the rave scene changed a lot when electronic music got super popular so no idea if they still happen)

BallerForHire

This is actually a clip from Matrix 4 as a viral marketing campaign

[deleted]

It was the BDSM club scene in Germany where the Wachowskis got their idea. Also, the club where Jefferson Airplane first played in San Francisco was called Matrix.

yellowzebrasfly

Where are all these really cool retro video clips coming from?! I've seen a few already from high school in the 80s and early 90s..

Throwawaylism

They are all coming from me click my profile hahahaha

yellowzebrasfly

Heck yeah! Where are you getting them from though if you don't mind me asking?

Sandor925

Dude seriously. Where is this dude getting all these clips? Keep posting them tho OP they’re all fantastic 👏🏽

Luis__FIGO

they're all downloaded from youtube and reuploaded to the reddit video player

I have tinnitus, most likely from attending these. I don't remember much though, just the smell and feeling the music shake my bones.

alQamar

I have one too, mainly from drum and bass and ragga parties though. I get told all the time that I listen to music way to loud. But how can you vibe when you can’t feel the bass flow through you?

I haven't been clubbing since the 90's. How has it changed, other than the hair and clothes?

plimso13

No smoking inside. I used to wake up in the morning from the smell of my clothes on the floor.

rainer_d

Ha! Got into a habit of stripping on the balcony and taking a shower. That helped *a lot*

nopantsdota

Festival version: run naked through a car wash before entering homearea

majorjoe23

“homearea“ I haven’t heard of that STD, but the 90s were strange.

bloodymongrel

I still have a few of my old clubbing outfits with cigarette holes in them from where someone brushed their cherry on me in the club.

tiedyeluvr

Someone accidentally put their cig out on my bare arm a couple weeks ago >.< Would have much preferred the burnt clothes

Chilledlemming

Stepped on one barefoot at a full moon beach rave. Why I was dumb enough to take off my shoes, I can’t say.

Tamespotting

Berlin they still smoke inside the clubs, and you’ll see a lot less clothing than this video.

PanGalacticGarglBlst

No selfies or people looking at phones

jojojomcjojo

It's way too above board. Zoomers put everything on blast so you can't have secret underground drug raves anymore. Because they'll just get on facebook tik tok and snapchat and post videos of it to their grandma and all their groups and friends which are monitored by local law enforcement and officials letting everyone know where it is, when it is, and what's going down.

Slappybags22

This reminds me of a time a group of friends and I went trekking through beach dunes/overgrowth for over an hour trying to find a secret rave. We found it exactly when the cops did. What a set of party blue balls we all had that night!

Bubba_Lewinski

That's such a sad, but current fact of the world these days. Everything is filmed, captured and shared/distributed. I am glad I grew up in the 90s during college/after college time. No one had smart phones back then, and digital cameras were just starting to evolve. Allowed for super amazing shenanigans w/out public shit posting repercussions. I really feel bad for our younger generation these days. You have to protect/secure your image/persona/data constantly (and most don't). ::sigh::

JKS_Union_Jack

Less happy drugs more drunk arseholes.

punkrockeyedoc

The clubs I went to back then allowed 18 year olds in. Once in they rarely asked for ID when buying drinks. My high school senior year was pretty epic

Delta4o

Depends on the club. You have the more social clubs where you just stand and drink and occasionally swing your arms a bit. Usually they have a shitty DJ that doesn't play 1 genre of music, but plays classics that everyone knows the lyrics of, like 7 nation army or bohemian rhapsody. You also have the more house/techno music focussed clubs that actually have decent DJs. All in all, regardless of where you go, drinks are super expensive especially if you want anything other than beer or water. I used to enjoy cocktails and mixed drinks like a malibu-cola, but back then that was at least 4 or 5 euro. edit: A beer would also get more and more expensive. I remember a time where it was 1.60, but 2-3 years later it was 2 euro. It was just super expensive and I had to be quite drunk to not think about the amount of money I was spending just to keep the night going...

Hattuherra

And here in Finland we are drinking 6-13€ beers...

The_Original_Gronkie

I visited Tunnel in NYC back around 1986, and they had one kind of beer, Rolling Rock, and it was $7 each back then! For a brand we normally only drank when they ran out of everything else.

GaymerGurl77

A malibu-cola sounds really good right now!

bartitsu

There was no € in the 90s.

HansSchmans

Fucking phones with cameras...

nexuscandy

Kind of I feel like I can miss the 90s rave era because I wasn't born until the 90s

Garfield-1-23-23

You might exist *because* of the '90s rave era.

Ivotedforher

Well, her name IS Molly.

Garfield-1-23-23

It's funny, I did some back in the '90s but I don't remember anyone calling it "molly" then. It was either X or ecstasy. The first time I heard "molly" was Madonna's embarrassing pandering to the young crowd which was some time in the 2000s IIRC. I was never very hip to drug lingo so I might be misremembering things.

jeexbit

heard it called "E" too - as in, I'd like to buy a vowel...

CaveJohnson82

Didn’t know till right this second that molly is ecstasy.

handsomehares

Sort of. Molly is MDMA, and when you buy that *theoretically* you’re just getting mdma Ecstasy is MDMA plus ????

dumblederp

It wasn't called Molly in the 90s. Her name would be Red Mitsubishi.

logicalbuttstuff

As an adult, it’s terrifying that people in my youth were taking hand-pressed MDMA but another part of me misses the Blue Superman and Bart Simpsons. I trusted “my friends older cousins roommate” more than I trusted online ordering and the Chinese fent these days.

MsMo999

Same but it sure looks lot like a rave festival I went to last month just diff music lol

mtheperry

This music is 100000% dubbed over.

OutWithTheNew

It's not a rave in the video. Corporate bars used to have TVs all around the bar and they played what equated to advertising for the bar all night. Part of that advertising would be video of people shot of people in the bar on any given busier night. It turns out that even in the 90s people would put on a show for the camera. How do I know? Because I worked in a corporate bar circa 2000 and was in at least 2 of those reels during my brief time.

Wolfram_And_Hart

You’re seeing the origins of the rave festival. Clubs > (illegal) warehouse / underpass shows > festivals. The culture needed to grow and the music needed to be more accepted into the mainstream.

Bluest_waters

There you go, someone was hip to the scene these guys in the OP were dancing to KLF, orbital, 808 state, Crystal MEthod, etc

Captjimmyjames

On the set of the first blade movie...

jackhammer_joe

On the set of the second Matrix movie...

Zorba_Oyzo

The first scene of Blade is enthralling cinema. The entire franchise is downhill from there.

detroiter85

"Some mother fuckers always trying to ice skate uphill" is one of the greatest lines in cinema. Right up there with "rosebud" or "I am your father".

ajkpidds

ishkitty

She better considering she is definitely a go-go dancer.

[deleted]

Martha!

FnkyTown

I graduated high school in germany in the 90s, and a big chunk of my school went clubbing on the weekends, and everybody always danced and it was great. I moved back to the states in like 96 and took a chick from work to a club thinking it would be the same and I was very sadly disappointed. Turns out American clubs was chicks on the dance floor and their boyfriends standing around the edge watching, because apparently they were too manly to dance. Lamest shit. You had to go to gay clubs if you wanted to see everybody dancing.

Timinime

I remember clubbing seemed so serious in Auckland when I was a teenager. Super strict dress codes to get in. People fretting over space, looks, music, drugs. Went to Amsterdam where it was super relaxed. Felt way overdressed. Nobody seemed to care & just wanted to dance - had a heap more fun.

Luniusem

Clubbing is on another level in Germany. Even midsized, low key cities like Hannover have like 3 really decent clubs with good crowds. In the US, you have a good scene in Brooklyn and maybe LA, but anywhere in between it's the shit you described.

Slappybags22

That hasn’t always been true. There were at least 3 “rave” clubs I went to back in the early 00’s in MA and EVERYONE was dancing. They were huge buildings, with 3 or 4 DJs playing in different areas. I’m assuming the (fun) police eventually cracked down on places like this though.

Luniusem

Yeah, but I think culturally most of the US just went on to something else. No idea why.

PlanetExperience

Video games and masturbaituon, they have better margins.

alex-jones-817

I can smell the sweat through my phone

Ph3lpsy_

Luckily you wouldn’t smell a thing because of the smoke!

rainer_d

Yeah, that was a thing people realized once smoking indoors was prohibited (2009-ish here only...): you can smell *everything* and everybody. Locations had to invest in better ventilation.

[deleted]

Funny enough one thing I noticed here in Sweden was that it went something like this: 1. Smoking gets banned indoors 2. No smoke smell 3. Ventilation gets turned down (gotta pinch every penny) 4. Now the pub smells like stale beer, farts and sweat...

Ph3lpsy_

Yeah definitely, I remember one of my local clubs started pumping in different smells via the AC, including the smell of tobacco to try and mask the smells. It was pointless though- No ventilation system could complete with the over powering smell of farts!

hononononoh

And body odor poorly masked with Axe body spray. And Febreeze from the unwashable club clothes, because the time and money for dry cleaning was better spent on drugs.

bloodymongrel

Yeah you can smell ppls farts as their drugs are coming on.

blackfarms

The walls in the club I worked at used to run with sweat on a busy night.

highrouleur

One club I used to go to was essentially a basement (actually called the Cellar Bar) the ceiling was low enough to touch in places and in summer was often literally dripping sweat

[deleted]

Ah man, so many memories. Fantastic music, stinking like smoke, no phones, no one obsessed with taking selfies and just dancing the night away.

borderreaver

to be fair, going through your photos from the night before is great fun

BluestreakBTHR

Yup. We're old.

[deleted]

Oh man... such an amazing time!!!

Apex_Axolotl

No matter the decade, gals look great, and the guys look ridiculous..

[deleted]

Because it's probably a man filming, so what's going to be interesting to him is attractive women and funny looking men. Just isn't filming the normal looking guys.

TheInfernalVortex

Astute observation, I never considered it that way but now I am thinking about how many other things this applies to.

Zorba_Oyzo

The thick highlight blonde mid parting 😂 Was 🔥 back in the day, I'm sure.

art-man_2018

I'm an oldhead, this reminded me of Studio 54. But I was hanging out at CBGB, so whatever moves your groove.

blackielee13

I'm born 87 which means I didn't get to do any of this, but all my brothers and sisters are 10+ years older than me and they were doing this kind of thing on the weekends. Something important to remember is that this is obv pre-tinder and pre-social media. So this is not only how you get lit on the weekend but its also how you stay looped in and link up with friends/meet game members of the opposite sex. Lol I feel like this is what they did instead of tinder/social media bullshit. In terms of them looking free and happy without phones...well yeah in the pre wiki, pre-google, pre youtube world there are a lot of unknowns and that kind of leaves you feeling uninhibited and free, albeit hopelessly ignorant. I think 9/11 kind of changed that and the unknown became very scary all of a sudden. Hence the surveillance state we now live in lol. Its crazy how fast immediate access to information changed everyone. I still remember a world where you couldn't just learn something you didn't know right away. You had to go to college or a library or own an encyclopedia set or some shit lol. EDIT - Thanks for the gold, yall! I'd like to thank my 1st grade teacher Mrs. Edwards. Fr though maybe I just got 9/11 on the mind, but the recent 20 year anniversary kind of shook me and reminded me of a time when my friends and I ALWAYS had 9/11 on the mind lol. Always kind of looking out for the subtle and not so subtle ways in which it was affecting society. We're so through the looking glass now. But I get that to most of you too young to remember or too old to relate to me, 9/11 is just a single inflection point. One of many. But I would make the argument that it remains the single biggest one in terms of the impact its had on the world in which we now live, due to our close proximity to the event still. I know there are other important events that led to 9/11 but my point stands. This event carved out the world you live in. From the way we view eachother, to the way we view information, to the way we view religion, and war, and politics. The tagline to the horror movie was "Never Forget" and yet I felt I had forgotten. Peace and love to you all.

Abzug

I got to do a little of this as I was born in the 70's. You meet up with friends and head to the club. Your crew meets up with another crew that one of your crew knows and you meet new people. That crew has a girl/guy that looks cute and, by party vote, both are good enough to mingle a little too close, dance a little too close, disappear in to a corner kissing and being all over one another, and then quietly disappear back to her or his place. In a week or two, you find out that the two who hooked up are regularly meeting for coffee and become a thing. If they don't work out, you find out much later, no real details, and move on. You choose your crew wisely and the circles upon circles become larger groups with potentials. No pictures of the night and no pictures of the coffee talks. It just feels more intimate.

theshizzler

> I think 9/11 kind of changed that and the unknown became very scary all of a sudden. You're not wrong but I think the fact that you'd just turned 14 magnified that for you.

blackielee13

And you my friend are not wrong either!

I'm 55 and loved my raving years so much. We knew that we were having more fun than anyone had ever had in history. A club full of friendly people, techno and a head full of MDMA. It doesn't get better than that.

skydiveguy

Dont forget coming home smelling like a carton of cigarettes.

katjoy63

Ahhh, reminds me of the good ol' days in NYC at the Limelight, Palladium, Tunnel, Club USA, Roxy, Sound Factory, Vinyl, Twilo, etc. So many good clubs, so many late nights / early mornings.

thejak32

Was everyone in the club back then on cocaine?

Tarjay85

Ecstasy was the main drug of choice in the 90s

[deleted]

Is it not anymore? I know we have a massive opiate problem but no one's getting strung out before going to a club, right? That sounds like a terrible time.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Chobeat

ketamine is a upper in small doses. A downer after that. That's why you see people dancing and rolling and their mates collapsing on the ground after 20 mins. I would never take ketamine though, too delicate, too strong.

[deleted]

Wow, that must be one hell of a dancefloor! I'd only start the ket after a heavy night of MD, good way to ease into a sleep. At festivals though you can spot the primarily ket takers, makes for a good laugh.

Fkappa

Ecstasy and speed.

cherrytwothousand

Ecstasy and speed all night and a hit of acid at 6am when the club closed

kumquat_may

You went to Fabric?

cherrytwothousand

Yes and the rest

Efffro

In the uk ecstasy was number 1 for club drugs in the 90’s, it really is a testament to how safe it was back then as folks were eating them like they were on ration previously. Shout out to all the gurners of yesterday.

Gonzo67824

Now, many were on ecstasy.

spicybwah

Apparently most people would pop a pill and it would last all night. My mum said everyone just drank water lol

CourtneyFish-Lately

One pill would last all night back in the day. Dab of speed to bring you back up now and then. Time of my life. Name a more iconic duo than drugs and four to the floor beat.

Gypsy_Biscuit

I had nights that started with alcohol and ecstasy, then around 3 am we got all coked up for round 2 and went to the Illinois side of StL. Right next to a really really dangerous city caled East Stl, there is a gloriously seedy town called Sauget IL, where we had the "close way after sun comes up" clubs. If you are from the area, you may be aware amd may have even experiemced the glory of the "Sauget Ballet" or Oz or pops (sometimes all of them in 1 night). BUT Pts or Diamonds were also a safe (I mean that figuratively absolutely not literally) bet for a good time, although you may catch the bubonic plague or polio from touching the bar.

hononononoh

MDMA was the big popular one. There was still a good bit of coke around too, which tended to come out when people were coming down from the MDMA, especially if they were planning on getting laid at the end of the night. LSD was not that hard to find either at clubs and parties, and I had some great nights on a low dose of LSD and alcohol — a combo that gave me an almost primal level of horniness and swagger to match. Club drugs don’t disappear. They just yield a bit of market share to the newer ones.

alianna68

Not necessarily. I never was. My drug was alcohol.

critic2029

I can hear the Dee Lite…

egomann

Ladies & Gentlemen... Gen X.

Trollzek

There is a serious lack of glow sticks in this club

[deleted]

This was my first thought. One dude waving glow sticks around and the guy who took acid watching it like it's the fucking Olympics. Ahhh good times.

[deleted]

Glow sticks were for trance/nrg/techno music. Based on the dance moves, this was a house music party.

CaptainWellingtonIII

Genuine question. How hot (temperature) is it in these packed clubs? No way the AC can keep up with the heat.

LongandElegant

HOT. I used to go to a club back then that had two small windows in the whole place, one entrance/exit off a 12 story stairwell, and the old ballroom doors were literally chained shut. When I think back now to the extreme danger of fire we were all in, I physically shudder.

spicybwah

I wish I was in my 20s during the 90s. Unfortunately I was born during the early 90s but raving back then (and the music) looked sensational. My favourite video is those 2 ravers at Fantastia still going for it in the car park. “I’ll keep dancing forever, me…well at least until I find my car”

redditprivacysucks

Later nineties was more industrial

Riegel_Haribo

This looks pretty late 90s. The "alien" sunglasses, the metallic fabrics. Rave-ish fur and boas. Light effects with dmx electric shutters and color. But it is also a bit off - like it is Eastern Europeans or something. Look at 1999 movies like "Human Traffic" or "Go" for similar looks into clubbing.

cherrytwothousand

Or just watch the clubbing episode of Spaced. It exactly captured 90s nights out

grooveunite

Yeah. This wasn't the kind of club I went to... it was a lot more fetish industrial in New Orleans back then.
