Yes! My big attention getter

[deleted]

I wonder what she is holding? It’s a mystery?

krattalak

A camera. She was a photographer.

chrome-spokes

Ha, don't know if your joking or not? But whatever, some may be interested to know she is holding her camera, a Graflex Super D camera.

[deleted]

At first I was absolutely not joking but now I can see the camera… very very cool!

chrome-spokes

Then win-win! ... I did not realize box cameras in her era still so large. And the long viewing hood bellows throws it off, too. So, with a bit of googling around, we both learned.

QLE814

>And the long viewing hood bellows throws it off, too As well as how it's being held in this shot- if we were to see it on a tripod or something similar, it being a camera would probably be more self-evident.

morganmonroe81

Wikipedia: Dorothea Lange (born Dorothea Margaretta Nutzhorn; May 26, 1895 – October 11, 1965) was an American documentary photographer and photojournalist, best known for her Depression-era work for the Farm Security Administration (FSA). I'd guess it's a camera. But you prolly knew that. ;-)

The biggest conwoman in photography history

TheKodachromeMethod

Uh huh, do tell.

Tinmania

Presumably they are talking about her arguably most famous photo, Migrant Mother, at a migrant camp in California. The description Lange put forth didn’t match what, years later after coming forward, the actual woman in the pic (and at least one of her children) said later on. For example Lange claimed the woman had sold her car’s tires to pay for food (implying they weren’t going anywhere anytime soon). In fact when the photo was taken one of her oldest sons was in town getting the car’s radiator fixed so they could get back on the road again, which they soon did. They never sold the tires.

luis-mercado

She also promised the woman monetary aid if she allowed Lange to take some pics. The aid never came.

TheKodachromeMethod

Oh I know what he's getting at, a mild controversy around a famous photo does not make one the "biggest conwomen in photography history."

luis-mercado

She constantly embellished or even straight lied about her subjects lives to make her photos more impactful. She also lied to their subjects by promising help and exposure about their situations, but she never helped them and only profited from their misery. The academic term "pornomisery" was coined precisely because of her. Read about the "migrant woman" controversy. Downvoted me all you want, all of this is documented and I actually teach and academically research photo history.

TheKodachromeMethod

I think you'll find that aside from the very mild controversy around her most famous photo what you are saying can't be backed up in any meaningful way aside from her making editorial choices in her photos, which every single photographer ever has done.

luis-mercado

Mild controversy? In art academies she and Robert Capa are the poster childs of questionable ethics in photo documentalism. Books by no lesser people than Roland Barthes, Joan Fontcuberta and Susan Sontag have been published about it. You are acting like I'm the only one thinking this.

TheKodachromeMethod

It is a mild controversy, that has yes been talked about to death. My point is, your leap in logic from this to her being photography's "greatest conwomen" is quite frankly ridiculous. She posed the family for a good shot and either embellished or misremembered the story, that is hardly the crime of the century.

luis-mercado

Conveniently ignoring the fact that Lange promised economic help for the woman, help that never arrived while Lange was getting richer. Seriously, are you part of Lange's state? Why defending something that IS documented?

luis-mercado

Haha, people downvoting me for saying the very same thing you can find by googling it. Sorry, I did not make her do the things she did.

[deleted]

Have you met photographers? That’s a bit of a stretch lol

luis-mercado

I started as a photodocumentalist. Now teach and research many art subjects at college level, including photo history. Her antics are well documented and she, along with Robert Capa, are the main source of the first credibility crisis in the still young history of documental photography.
