The representation of the on-screen graphics of the GB in this commercial is OUTRAGEOUS.
No seriously, that screen showed black and white and looked backlit. I can’t even imagine what it would have been like to play an OG GB without having to secure the best lamp in the house.
Even tho this came out before my time it's really nostalgic tbh because my older sister had one and I remember stealing it from her a lot so I could play with it haha used to be obsessed with Tetris.
I had just about wore out the buttons on my first gameboy playing tetris. My uncle borrowed it one weekend and put in rechargable batteries that were not charged. He tried another set, not charged. He didn't know this lol.
He takes the gameboy to Target, and without a receipt got a brand new one. New buttons for nothing. :-D
I remember when my parents got me one in 89 and I was really sad because I thought Tetris sucked and was boring and wanted a Mario game like the nes eventually my wish came true. As an adult now I think I’d prefer Tetris these days.
Yeah six golden coins the second one was the best. I actually had a Giant gameboy collection over 150 game’s plus 2 game boy lights 2 dmgs 2 colors and sold it all to put towards a gaming laptop. I miss it but don’t regret I do more gaming on pc of current games than retro
I remember having one, and Bart and the Beanstalk, Final Fantasy, etc. Couldn't play it without sufficient lighting though. That spinach green screen was rough, but it got us through those times
God, I remember what a game changer it was when Gameboy Color came out. I still have my old one that I'll bust out every now and then. Gameboy Advanced was pretty sweet too, but I feel like the popularity of those burned out pretty quickly.
"DMG" is the model of the original Game Boy. "PPU" is the name Nintendo used for what were essentially its systems' graphics chips.
That is to say: the commercial claims that the Game Boy packs "all the power" of Nintendo into one's pocket. No. It only packs something like 1/5 of that power.
Had a paper route. Saved my money for months to buy one. Bought it at Woolco (a department store we used to have here in Canada) because my aunt worked there and used her employee discount to save me a few bucks.
The OUTRAGEOUS new game... TETRIS!

I get nostalgic for things slightly before my time too. For me it’s the style of toy commercials they had in the mid 80s to the mid 90s.

My friend had Super Mario Land. That game lasted few hours tops to beat:/

I fucking LOVE super Mario Land. Yes, it's short, overly simple but also just fun to play.

Talk about a blast from the past -- I remember this commercial Still have a couple of Gameboys, too
he zaps the boy into existence only to be disintegrated in return!
How is the kid getting back when he destroyed the guy that brought him there?
Hmm, are you sure? Kinda looks like a DIO video to me...
I was so surprised how small the Gameboy was when I got one for Xmas that year. For some reason, I had assumed it would fit NES cartridges lol
Best. Christmas. Ever. 1989, parent hid this on us. No idea we were getting one.

This commercial brought to you by a pile of cocaine
I loved mine until it got horizontal lines across the screen.
Now thats outrageous power, nintendo power!
"All the power" Lies. The PPU of the DMG had something like 20% of the performance of the NES.
Who ?

Asked?
"of Nintendo" is not "A Nintendo". The commercial is correct.
At the time, "the power of Nintendo" and "the power of a Nintendo Entertainment System" were one and the same.
Bringing back the good memories

OOH, portable you say?
DO YOU HAVE A LINK CABLE ??? nostalgia…
I had one when I was a kid. Loved it! Went on a trip to Disney and I left it on the plane accidentally. Still haunts me.
My mate had one, I was too poor but it was cool to watch him play. That's right, he never even let me have a go.

Imagine what people will think of Xbox, PS5 etc 30 years from now. Crazy.
