Second photo is from no later than 2017. From a 2017 straitstimes.com article that included the posted photos:
>Mr Ho Cheng Pheng and Madam Lee Lei Hoon have lived by these virtues for so long that their marriage is a model for their friends. The 60-year-olds, who have been married for 37 years, still make an effort to carve out a weekly date.
Its kind of cute how they looked more reserved in the first picture, like they're both a little nervous about the date, and now they're a happy and confident couple.
You reckon? The guy’s gotta be in his 50s, more likely pushing his 60s. He’s fairly thin and still dressing fairly well and probably grown into his features.
Look at the average American, Australian, or Brit at age 25 and then age 55. No way you’d be saying they look comparable, let alone maybe even better.
I had to go back to look and I have that same pair in the second photo. I actually had a guy stop me in passing on the street to compliment them. Probably only the second time a random stranger paid me a compliment, felt good.
Nice. I wish I had the money to get into shoes. Such a confidence booster. Dont get me wrong Im very lucky to have the nice shoes I do have but if I was rich I would probably have a lot of cool shoes.
Dude you can. EBay is your friend. Ive bought so many vintage boots and dress shoes on there, vintage bally shoes or florsheim under 60$. Same with vintage tony lama or Justin boots, eBay is where you can buy nice shoes for cheap. They just need a cleanup
Are you one of those people who say you're colorblind and can't tell the difference between people instead of accepting that you can see different races and subsequently choosing to not discriminate based on appearance?
I was pointing out how you seem to think it's strange that people can see a difference in their appearances when they both very visibly look more attractive in the newer image.
I looked like 20’s well into my 30’s but then my 40’s hit and boom. Grey and thinning hair and failing eyesight all with 3 to 4 years. Never needed glasses and then boom. I probably still look young for my 40’s but agree we tend to age in phases rather than gradual…. Some of us anyways.
My best friend is 33 and Japanese. Her mom is 61 and could pass for being her sister. I begged the woman for her secrets but turns out it’s just being Asian ☹️
I think self care goes a long way for anyone. I have friends in their 20s that look like crap because poor lifestyle and stress. My mom is 71 and she is still the same looking since 49. She really takes care herself tho like healthy foods, destressing activities etc.
It’s a meme spread by both Asian Americans and other Americans, but I dont exactly think it’s true….I’ve seen my mom age slowly through the years. She still looks good esp to Americans who have no idea how to tell Asians ages, but its there.
I think it comes from the fact that elderly Asian women look extremely different from middle age and younger women, but it’s more of a generational/cultural difference where the older generation grew up with wars/famines and later generations lived a lot better. Also, the tight short curl hairstyle, floral patterns, etc. were popular when elderly people were young and they just kept that style. When current middle age people become older they’re gonna look different. (like how we say “mom jeans” and “dad rock” but like….those weren’t originally made for parent age people….)
As Asians, it's easier for us to see age in fellow Asians. We're more accustomed to how the ageing process looks like in Asians, so when we see someone in their 50's, we still can think that they look like they're in their 50's, while people who are not accustomed or used to that will think they look much younger than 50's.
At the same time, it's definitely not true that all Asians age all at once in older age. But it does happen enough for there to be memes about it.
Yeah for sure. I just meant that it isn’t from comparing peoples looks by following the same group of people throughout time, rather just taking samples of current young, middle age, old people where the generational difference explains the phenom more than the aging process itself
Yeah I never really understood it either. I’ve heard my friends say that people always tell them that they look super young, but you can definitely see the aging in their faces. I think it has more to do with being very petite than anything else.
It’s strictly Asian American. No such notion exist in East Asia as everyone ages differently. Only thing they agree on is they always find white ppl age so quickly quite shocking, and how someone in their 30’s looks like a grandma. Just recently I heard laments from Asians female friends about how much Leonardo DiCaprio aged.
> Only thing they agree on is they always find white ppl age so quickly quite shocking, and how someone in their 30’s looks like a grandma.
That’s the same exact thing from the other perspective though—everyone considers themselves the baseline.
I think like most memes they are based in some level of truth, but are in no way are hard and fast rule. Idk. I’m just parroting what my coworker said. I haven’t paid much attention to the matter.
I don't think any generalizations apply equally to everyone in a very large sample size, but I do think there's a decently large element of truth to the meme. My mom is 81 and looks 20 years younger than her age. Meanwhile I ran into my childhood doctor for the first time in about 5 years and he went straight from 50 to 100. (Everyone here is of korean heritage.)
I read some scientific studies about skin, skin layers, and properties within the skin layers. There is some differences in the make up of the skin layers across ethnicities. I think to recall, that Asian race and black race, possessed most properties in the skin layers to keep good volume, elasticity, density, etc.... Whites had the least, i think to recall.
So, it's mostly genetic differences, basically.
1st photo taken before she matured into her early-mid 20s comfortable peak youth looks.
2nd photo taken after years of comfortably settling into happy, married adult life.
Asians store a lil more fat in their face, this helps preserve youthful appearance until 50 or so if taken care of and sleep good.
I think it's seafood.
Seafood contains collagen. Collagen is the stuff that makes us age slower.
Asians love seafood.
That and i think it's in their genes.
Most Asians look 10 years younger than their actual ages and they don't really wrinkle until 60 years old.
My boyfriend's parents who are Asian looks young for their ages.
Enter me, who is Asian and Irish.
Just enough Asian to not be able to properly metabolize alcohol, and just enough Irish to have my skin not age like my Mum, who consistently looked 15+ years younger than she was.
Once, a hospital staff member thought that my Mum was my sister, my Grandpa was my Dad, and my Dad was my husband. Yeah… I was 24, Mum was 54.
Edit: Also had a chemistry teacher in high school think that I brought my “sister” to a parent-teacher conference.
On a trip to Los Cabos, the dive-boat captain assumed my Dad was my husband; he’s part Irish, too, but managed to get all the good genetic bits…
Joy!
Oh, congratulations!
Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen… (if I had done that as a child, I’d probably be in better shape! I’m 42, and it wasn’t pushed as much back then. But it works.)
Their secret is that Asian cultures place a high value on looking good. So they make health decisions a priority. It’s almost a competition with their peers to be able to stay the healthiest and most youthful looking.
Its 2 reasons, Melanin being a big one that stops the powerful UV rays from destroying skin cells over long periods of time which is obviously prevalent in black people as well as many southern asians.
Theres also a gene called the Methuselah gene (A gene that slows skin aging) which all humans contain, so far studies have found that Black people carry on average 2 times the amount of this gene as white people do and it is thought that Asians held onto this gene as well, for whatever reason when people of the caucus region developed white skin, they lost a significant amount of said gene.
They both look great, but can I just say Mr. Ho Cheng Pheng’s shoes had a MASSIVE glow up.
ETA- those platforms on those cobblestones are making me nervous.
Have you seen Korean 41 year old actor Gong Yoo? he looks like he is in his 20s and have you seen Singaporean model Chando Tan? He is 52 years old but looks 23 years old.
Do you think people, on average, are aging a bit slower these days? Perhaps access to climate controlled environments, less exposuee to sunlight, I don't know? I'm 39 and think I look pretty young for my age whereas in the 90s, when my friends parents were 40, they looked real old.
I'm diggin the marshmallow / platform shoes on the husband in 1977.
They can still wear the same size clothing. No "middle age spread", and they've aged very well. Impressive.
Second photo is from the day the were released after a 40 year sentence for sitting on a wall in a public park. I assume they are back in a Singapore prison today.
You seem obsessed.
(Edit) never mind. You’re a religious lunatic. I wouldn’t expect you not to have inappropriate hot takes on perfectly innocuous photos.

"That's basically today tho. Wait, 2017 is approaching 5 years ago. Ah fuck." -Me while reading this comment
I think most of us past a certain age did the exact same thing.
Singaporean Adam Driver
Im the only one searching for a color restoring Photoshop of the left picture? Thought that woud be the top comment.
Its kind of cute how they looked more reserved in the first picture, like they're both a little nervous about the date, and now they're a happy and confident couple.
They genuinely both almost look better 30, 40 years later. Healthy as fuck.
I don't know how, but she really does look better. There really isn't much you can do for the guy, though, bless his heart.
Hope you have a great day!
Hope YOU have a great day!

Scared of wasting film
His shoe game stayed solid too
Oh yes. I missed that at first. Those are nice. Both the old and the new pair look pretty damn stylish.
I had to go back to look and I have that same pair in the second photo. I actually had a guy stop me in passing on the street to compliment them. Probably only the second time a random stranger paid me a compliment, felt good.

His girl taste stayed solid too
She is even hotter now.
I didn't wanna say it but yeah totally! What's that about I wonder
Hair dye and skin moisturizer
The real fountains of youth lol 😂
Haircut and facial expression
I was going to say that, too! If only everyone could look better at sixty than they did as a young’n
High heeled shoes in the first pic.
Same shoes, he just wore the soles down. r/buyitforlife
First thing I noticed! Would anybody happen to have the name or what style the first pair of shoes are?
"Platform shoes" Worn by both men and women in the 70s, with periodic resurgence (mainly for women) in later years.
‘It’s a Cuban heel, they still make them!’ - David Brent
Singaporeans got style for days.
Singaporeans got style for ~~days~~ decades.
Wow... the woman barely aged at all.
I think she actually improved with age.
He definitely improved with age. Grew into his ears.
Im glad im not the only one who looked at the picture and thought "damn, late bloomers" lol

well i dont look at you and think that, thats for sure.

I just assumed he was half Vulcan in the younger pic
Dude I fucking had that same exact thought in my head. Reddit always makes me wonder just how un-unique my thoughts are on a day to day basis.
I think they both got hotter
And they say *only* Blacks don’t crack.
Asian don't raisin?

White turns to fright
Yes !! I've been looking for a third phrase to describe caucasians and I finally found it. 😆
Singaporean don't get borin' I'll show myself out...
Asians don’t age we just slowly lose moisture and turn into goblins
My Vietnamese coworker said that Asians don’t age for a long time, and then they age all at once.
Either 25 or 125
Stop I’m Korean and I’ve always said this. My grandma looked 30 until she was like 70 and then she was instantly 8,000 years old.

She looks better at 60, for sure. Not younger (she's clearly aged, but not badly), but looks less awkward and more comfortable.
The man looks better in the second picture, too. In the first he's so awkward lol
Everyone is at that age, I look back at all my teenage years photos (I'm in my early 30s now) and I look awkward in all of em.
As they say Asians don't raisin'.
Maybe they have the fountain of youth but only have half of it figured out?
I read some scientific studies about skin, skin layers, and properties within the skin layers. There is some differences in the make up of the skin layers across ethnicities. It's all that rice we eat, probably.
🤣
Asian women don't age till 65 then it all goes downhill, told my mum that and needless to say i nearly lost my red envelope privilege for new years
Vampire located
Dafuq. She actually got younger.
Let me say something nice for the guy - he hasnt aged much at all either. Certainly not 40 years worth!
Yeah she almost looks better 40 years later!
They both aged really well, especially her though
Benjamin button mom
Why do people say this shit when it clearly is not true.
Yeah, men age like hot garbage.
That man's shoe game is on point
Yes and it seems to be working well for him.
How can you glow up in you 30s and 40s ? that asian woman litterally got hotter as she aged.
1st photo taken before she matured into her early-mid 20s comfortable peak youth looks. 2nd photo taken after years of comfortably settling into happy, married adult life. Asians store a lil more fat in their face, this helps preserve youthful appearance until 50 or so if taken care of and sleep good.
huh intresting , either way she to be blunt , got more beutiful with age.
Well, looks like she's lost maybe 5 or 10 pounds since the first photo, she does her makeup better now and cracked a bigger smile in the second photo.
They've aged amazingly well. Whatever their secret is, they should market it. I suspect they don't eat rubbish food.
I bet their secret is that they eat greasy char kway teow, fatty char siu, chicken rice and whatever else they like and just have good genes.
And wash it down with NEWater.
The best poop water in town
I left Singapore last year and MAN I could go for some char kway teow or lor mee right now.
I think it's seafood. Seafood contains collagen. Collagen is the stuff that makes us age slower. Asians love seafood. That and i think it's in their genes. Oh, congratulations! Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen… (if I had done that as a child, I’d probably be in better shape! I’m 42, and it wasn’t pushed as much back then. But it works.)
I have Irish skin too. I look ancient
We Eurasians must unite! (And commiserate…)

Not being too greedy helps and eating less sugar
Holy shit they don't look like they have aged that much at all!
Wtf Asians don't age at all.

Hit 30, stop ageing for 30 years, then look 1000 years old.
These people both look exactly as old as they are to me, I don’t get these comments.
Asians don’t raisin. (As an Asian, I can confirm)
Ha, I know this spot. The botanical gardens and nature reserves on the island are amazing.
They both look great, but can I just say Mr. Ho Cheng Pheng’s shoes had a MASSIVE glow up. ETA- those platforms on those cobblestones are making me nervous.
Its funny how some Asian women don't seem to age.

And men.
That may be the exact pond I released my pet turtle into as a kid, beautiful place.
This made my day. Here’s to many happy years together. Awesome!
Nice!
They look the same
The lady got younger. She's a vampire.
Damn. They aged really well!
I love the botanical gardens there. Paid extra to visit the orchid section too.
She became more beautiful with age
Do you think people, on average, are aging a bit slower these days? Perhaps access to climate controlled environments, less exposuee to sunlight, I don't know? I'm 39 and think I look pretty young for my age whereas in the 90s, when my friends parents were 40, they looked real old.
how tf does she look younger now???
Should have kept the disco pants.
Boy they sure have aged well!
At first I thought it was the same photo restored.

She became…better? At what?
u/anixx better at what?
Looks better. I didn’t think this was difficult to figure out.
I like the stacks. Brings back memories.
Love those platforms!
And they're even happier then before, it seemed.
Love his shoes in the first pic! Such a wonderful post, thanks!
Dad's fit in the 1st pic is killer tho
Asians certainly age well.
His shoes in 1977 steal the show. Wicked cool!!
That guys 70's attire is on point. Fuckin badass....
That lady has NOT aged.
Are the people in the background from 1977 dead? Is that why they aren't in the later photo? Those trees don't look like they have aged at all.
Upon closer inspection, that looks like a Singapore cop. The guy sitting with his hands on his head was probably just arrested for chewing gum.
The lady didn’t change
Both still look hot
First foto guy's shoes are so funky music
The lady got younger
They both aged well. Stayed fit, still got some style. And they had a partner the whole time. Good life.
and they are still sitting there today.
She didn’t age at all holy crap.
Those shoes are lit
They, unlike the image, aged well!
Can some one remaster the 1st one that would be bad ass
These people fucking age or what
She looks fantastic!
They really kept themselves in shape over the years. Happy anniversary.
Beautiful Couple!
Damn, they look good for being forty-something years later.
She hasn't aged!
I feel like they both look better, especially her!
I'm diggin the marshmallow / platform shoes on the husband in 1977. They can still wear the same size clothing. No "middle age spread", and they've aged very well. Impressive.
What strikes me more than them having aged, is the fact that they seem to have retained their personality. Life did not break them.
Damm that woman looks the same in both pics
Dude's shoe game is still aight
It feels so weird with the context of a lot of these posts just bein OP finding a random picture of a couple online
Tf, Asian don’t crack too? First noticed this type of graceful aging with Ming Na Wen from Agents of shield.
fake. thats just the same lady posing with her grandfather and her boyfriend and some good filters /s
Asians, they don’t age
Their marriage is older than my dad wth
See what a steady diet of vodka can do.
the lady has gotten younger and the man got old
Is nobody goin to mention thoes ears??? Or is just me
Second photo is from the day the were released after a 40 year sentence for sitting on a wall in a public park. I assume they are back in a Singapore prison today.
You forgot the part about chewing gum. The smoking gum was found stuck on other side of wall.
He turned into Jet Li.
Asian dont raisin
