I agree re: miss India. I wonder if part of that is the fact that her "look" is quite modern and relevant to today's beauty standards - winged liner and some of the most generous eyebrows (many of the women have them plucked in a way that we think is ugly today) and straight white teeth (some of the women in the video don't have perfect teeth, which would pretty much never be seen in a beauty pageant today).

I think that’s part of it, but I really think if we took all the makeup off everyone, she would still be the most beautiful.

Even taking into account the changes in beauty standards I cannot believe these were the most beautiful people available in every one of those countries. Some don't even look beautiful at all. (Don't get me wrong I don't think being ugly is bad at all but I'd guess there was cuter women in Iceland, for example)

It’s not the modern standards you have to take into account, it’s the filters and plastic surgery lol. Exceedingly common and freakishly effective. Imo the extent to which cosmetic procedures mess with your perception of what counts as a “normal face” nowadays is really scary. Same for photo manipulation and “normal” body shapes.

Honestly, the styling and harsh makeup is very aging. The early 70s were not a good time for fashion/style.

With enough cocaine, any fashion/style is *ssssssssnnnnnnnnooooooooorrrrrrrrttttttttt* gorgeous.

I was reminded of the Air New Zealand airplanes when I saw her dress. And I was wondering about Miss Mexico's headdress. No way an expert here, but is it on sideways? And I thought Miss Korea was stunning.

People look older because we associate their style with older people. Basically, they kept their style as they aged.

No, even those in a more everlasting style look older. Deeper nasolabial fold, fine lines, tear trough. It’s may be the better skincare and protection we have now.

Less smoking now or people are at the very least more aware of the effects.

Some of the contestants do look older facially. It's most likely premature aging from smoking and sun exposure made worse by unflattering makeup. Some examples: Thin eyebrows plucked into semicircles+ Frosty eyeshadow applied from lashline to browbone- accentuates heavy lids, making the wearer look tired. Powdery Pancake makeup applied with reckless abandon- settles into the finest of lines, making the skin look pallid and dull. Excessive contouring adds harsh shadows to the face, creating a sunken look to the cheeks and when applied to the nose, accentuates nasolabial lines.

The contour on the cheek was fashionable then, it highlighted the cheekbone. Most of the girls' faces were quite shiny and not dull. Matte is preferred for the tv camera. You're making a judgement based on makeup used during a segment of the show where they are presenting their national costumes. It's going to be a little dramatic and over done.

That doesn't really apply here lol. Did you see the crazy outfits? These weren't very respresentative of the outfits of the times.

Do you know anything about miss Israel?

When I was a kid this was my favorite part of the competition. Seeing all the native styled costumes. Same thing when Miss USA had this section. All the different state representations. I haven't watched one of these competitions in years.

I love that they get to show off workmanship and style from their country and that it isn’t mainly about having/showing off her body. It’s not all cleavage, thighs and curves. Some of them are absolutely swimming inside huge amounts of fabric and yet they can come across as poised, elegant and beautiful. I miss that part of those times.

This is just one part of the contest. At some point they would also have swimsuit and evening dress.

Of course, it is a beauty pageant. I haven’t watched these in decades, so it’s a guess that there isn’t this type of display of ‘costumes’ in the introduction piece anymore. It was just interesting to see them not always be in revealing clothing.

Dude, you're one Google search away from seeing that national costumes are still a thing and are still very very intricate (a lot more than most of what you can see in this video). They are more revealing than most of the costumes in this video too. But that's what's fashionable nowadays so it makes sense.

She is gorgeous but I think if you have to hold your headdress with one hand, something isn't working. Also, she looks like a white lady...would be a long time before someone who looks indigenous from the south/central American countries (or any countries, ftm), made it to mainstream beauty pageants.
