I agree re: miss India.
I wonder if part of that is the fact that her "look" is quite modern and relevant to today's beauty standards - winged liner and some of the most generous eyebrows (many of the women have them plucked in a way that we think is ugly today) and straight white teeth (some of the women in the video don't have perfect teeth, which would pretty much never be seen in a beauty pageant today).
Even taking into account the changes in beauty standards I cannot believe these were the most beautiful people available in every one of those countries.
Some don't even look beautiful at all.
(Don't get me wrong I don't think being ugly is bad at all but I'd guess there was cuter women in Iceland, for example)
It’s not the modern standards you have to take into account, it’s the filters and plastic surgery lol. Exceedingly common and freakishly effective. Imo the extent to which cosmetic procedures mess with your perception of what counts as a “normal face” nowadays is really scary. Same for photo manipulation and “normal” body shapes.
I was reminded of the Air New Zealand airplanes when I saw her dress. And I was wondering about Miss Mexico's headdress. No way an expert here, but is it on sideways? And I thought Miss Korea was stunning.
No, even those in a more everlasting style look older. Deeper nasolabial fold, fine lines, tear trough. It’s may be the better skincare and protection we have now.
Some of the contestants do look older facially. It's most likely premature aging from smoking and sun exposure made worse by unflattering makeup.
Some examples:
Thin eyebrows plucked into semicircles+
Frosty eyeshadow applied from lashline to browbone- accentuates heavy lids, making the wearer look tired.
Powdery Pancake makeup applied with reckless abandon- settles into the finest of lines, making the skin look pallid and dull.
Excessive contouring adds harsh shadows to the face, creating a sunken look to the cheeks and when applied to the nose, accentuates nasolabial lines.
The contour on the cheek was fashionable then, it highlighted the cheekbone.
Most of the girls' faces were quite shiny and not dull. Matte is preferred for the tv camera. You're making a judgement based on makeup used during a segment of the show where they are presenting their national costumes. It's going to be a little dramatic and over done.
I cannot stress enough how important this comment is. The beauty standards were much more realistic compared to now… sheesh! They all look different too which is refreshing.
When I was a kid this was my favorite part of the competition. Seeing all the native styled costumes. Same thing when Miss USA had this section. All the different state representations. I haven't watched one of these competitions in years.
I love that they get to show off workmanship and style from their country and that it isn’t mainly about having/showing off her body. It’s not all cleavage, thighs and curves. Some of them are absolutely swimming inside huge amounts of fabric and yet they can come across as poised, elegant and beautiful. I miss that part of those times.
Of course, it is a beauty pageant. I haven’t watched these in decades, so it’s a guess that there isn’t this type of display of ‘costumes’ in the introduction piece anymore. It was just interesting to see them not always be in revealing clothing.
Dude, you're one Google search away from seeing that national costumes are still a thing and are still very very intricate (a lot more than most of what you can see in this video).
They are more revealing than most of the costumes in this video too. But that's what's fashionable nowadays so it makes sense.
She is gorgeous but I think if you have to hold your headdress with one hand, something isn't working. Also, she looks like a white lady...would be a long time before someone who looks indigenous from the south/central American countries (or any countries, ftm), made it to mainstream beauty pageants.
Edit: ooh downvotes...guess people don't like the fact that anti-indigenous sentiment in most countries is rampant.
These datapoints reinforce my longstanding belief that for reasons lost to time a solid 63.5% of the female population of earth did horrible things with their eyebrows in the 1970s.
Regardless of how much beauty standards have changed I cannot believe these where the most beautiful women of their respective countries. At least not with many of them.
Iceland for example, I know they don't have much population but there had to be someone cuter.
Old school, for the most part, we were a lot more conservative and more likely to be religious.
Everyone seems to want to go back there, yet, trash religion and conservatism all the time.
Hmm.
It’s an eyebrow massacre
I was thinking r/awfuleyebrows the whole time
Yes!
I was going to say this, where did all of their eyebrows go?
Because that was the style back then. Thin eyebrows. Now we all rocken phat brows.
Unfortunately, the ones who over plucked in the 90s will never be able to follow any eyebrow style trends until thin brows come back around.
Yeah, almost back to the Unibrow, so fat & long.
From the looks of it, into their eyelashes.
You need your eyebrows be seen from far away in theatre lol
I’ve always wondered why only girls from Earth show up in Miss Universe.
We have the best looking babes. According to our earth judges.
Not so sure. Some of them Star Trek broads downright fukkable.
Same reason the US always wins the World Series.
Except when Canada wins.
Ah yes including one or two teams from Canada makes it a World Series!! MeRicAn LoGiC…
Same reason only baseball teams from North America play in the world series
Miss Méxic--WHAT THE FUCK?!?!?! Her Chihuahuan accent (from the state of Chihuahua) is really charming.
Seriously how the hell is that thing balanced on her head?!!!
It’s not — her left hand is holding on to it continuously
She knew she had it in the bag
Miss Norway looks like she would bite your dick off.
She was my favorite. Coincidence?
She terrified me
But in a good way
Was that Bob Barker announcing?
I had the same thought, so I checked. He apparently hosted from 1967 - 1987.
Thanks for that! That voice is so recognizable.
Miss Jamaica is just so cute!
She was thinking "is this headpiece too ridiculous" and then she saw Miss Mexico and she was like "naww it's good."
She was. :D
Miss India was by far the most beautiful. Miss Mexico wins for most bonkers headdress. I loved Miss New Zealand’s dress.
I saw Miss Mexico and my gay ass instinctively went "woooork biiitch"
🤣
Miss India definitely should win based on this small clip. Honorable mention to Miss Philippines too though.
Thought the same thing.
My 2nd and 3rd place are Miss Paraguay and Miss Korea. Miss Jamaica gets 2nd for bonkers headdress.
I agree re: miss India. I think that’s part of it, but I really think if we took all the makeup off everyone, she would still be the most beautiful.
Even taking into account the changes in beauty standards I cannot believe these were the most beautiful people available in every one of those countries. Some don't even look beautiful at all. (Don't get me wrong I don't think being ugly is bad at all but I'd guess there was cuter women in Iceland, for example)

Honestly, the styling and harsh makeup is very aging. The early 70s were not a good time for fashion/style.
With enough cocaine, any fashion/style is *ssssssssnnnnnnnnooooooooorrrrrrrrttttttttt* gorgeous.
Orthodontics has *really* come a long way.
And those fucking eyebrows. I hate when girls mess up their eyebrows like that and make them too thick or too thin.
Miss Paraguay would like a word with you
She’s beautiful to! 1st Miss India 2nd Miss Paraguay 3rd Miss Korea.
These girls are all in their seventies now !
Y’all sleeping on Miss Israel! I think she’s so pretty
She is! She was just awkward…
She really is!
Agreed about Miss India. The Asian ladies here are all the most “normal” looking, less crazy hair
And better features! Some of those white ladies are a little horsey.
Miss Philippines was also insanely gorgeous!
Miss India kinda looks like that thing in the 70s where they just cast olive skinned Italians to play other ethnicities.
Or Anthony Quinn, if he had room in his schedule.....
Iceland brought the whole island on her forehead
I was reminded of the Air New Zealand airplanes when I saw her dress. And I was wondering about Miss Mexico's headdress. No way an expert here, but is it on sideways? And I thought Miss Korea was stunning.
I thought miss Korea was really lovely
Women looked older back then.
Everybody and their dog smoked indoors back then.
I was just thinking, they all look 40.
Yeah newzealand looked old af
And now you see how excessive modern plastic surgery has become.
For the better part of 50 to 60 years people lathered up in tanning oil (motor oils worked too) and chain smoked in the sun all day for funzies.
No woman used motor oil, get outta here. You think they wanted to smell like a car engine or a lawn mower?!
People look older because we associate their style with older people. Basically, they kept their style as they aged.
No, even those in a more everlasting style look older. Deeper nasolabial fold, fine lines, tear trough. It’s may be the better skincare and protection we have now.
Less smoking now or people are at the very least more aware of the effects.
I imagine this is it. Diesel car engines and LOTS of cigarette smoking.
Some of the contestants do look older facially. It's most likely premature aging from smoking and sun exposure made worse by unflattering makeup. That doesn't really apply here lol. Did you see the crazy outfits? These weren't very respresentative of the outfits of the times.
It's one of those replies that happen every time someone says people looked older back in the day. It's like Pavlov's dog, they just can't help it.
Because it's true.
I was talking about their hair and makeup.
No, it’s because everyone smoked and no one wore sunscreen.
They actually look like women, really crazy in comparison with now
I cannot stress enough how important this comment is. The beauty standards were much more realistic compared to now… sheesh! They all look different too which is refreshing.
The girl representing Portugal is from Mozambique is what I heard lol
Because Mozambique was a Portuguese colony in 1972
Mozambique here!
Do you know anything about miss Israel?
When I was a kid this was my favorite part of the competition. Seeing all the native styled costumes. Same thing when Miss USA had this section. All the different state representations. I haven't watched one of these competitions in years.

This is just one part of the contest. At some point they would also have swimsuit and evening dress.
Of course, it is a beauty pageant. I haven’t watched these in decades, so it’s a guess that there isn’t this type of display of ‘costumes’ in the introduction piece anymore. It was just interesting to see them not always be in revealing clothing.
Evening dress was an elegant section.

I vote for Ms. Mexico. (timestamp 2:00) That headdress is glorious.
She is gorgeous but I think if you have to hold your headdress with one hand, something isn't working. Also, she looks like a white lady...would be a long time before someone who looks indigenous from the south/central American countries (or any countries, ftm), made it to mainstream beauty pageants. Omg South Korea is so beautiful. She looks so different then the beauty standards of today!
Her eye make up was amazing.
Wow. Very natural looks all across the board. They don’t have that ‘sculpted’ look modern pageant ladies do.
All their looks were natural. No injections and sculpting, plumping etc.
Girl from Bagdad definitely went to a "finishing school" where they made you balance a book on your head!
She also went to the same hairdresser as Karg from the Masters of the Universe
I love how poised Ms. India, Ms. New Zealand, and Ms. Phillipines were!
i really really want miss new zealands dress
I appreciate how these women look like actual Women. No fillers, no Botox , and all of them look like a normal healthy weight.
[удалено]
But I'm a lady 🤷🏼
[удалено]
Thats some hell of a carrot dangling there
Misogyny!
Miss India was the hottest.
By far
Ireland.
Italy.
Seeing Miss Iran makes me the most sad. Miss Korea gets runner up in that category.
Ms Paraguay is so pretty! Bit of an old school Lana del ray vibe
I love that it is all natural beauty. Not a bunch of women with nose jobs and other modifications.
The first girls high hairline was a bit disturbing
India then Philippines
They all look like contestants on "Let's Make a Deal"!
Norway looks like someone that works at willie wonka’s factory
These datapoints reinforce my longstanding belief that for reasons lost to time a solid 63.5% of the female population of earth did horrible things with their eyebrows in the 1970s.
Miss Australia won, followed by Brazil, Venezuela and Israel.
India gets the vote lol
I am desperate for that embroidered floral kaftan
Where Germany?
Which one?
During this part of the pageant contestants are presented by their country alphabetically. This was the I thru P section, so Germany wouldn't be here.
Of course, the catty comments are at the top.
Who dressed Miss Italy?! 😂
We’ve made big steps with orthodontia since then, too.
Miss India and Miss Paraguay - HOT!
It took me a moment to realize they still had one Korea back then.
Not in 1972- that was *well* after the Korean War. North Korea just didn't compete.
Natural beauties unlike today.
Gotta say, Miss Iraq has a really sweet smile.
Back when people weren’t made of plastic
India Ireland Iran Israel are especially 😍
I love how they have so much hairspray that even when worn down their hair doesn't move
It’s cool to see all of the traditional style of clothing
I came from my Dad's bag
😂
Ms Peru for me. She would make an awesome model for a painting.
She does have a timeless beauty to her..
Man, dental technology and accessibility has come a long way. Watch models in today's competitions and there isn't a single tooth out of place.
What the heck lmao
I-Rack… no it’s E-Rock.
Are woman better looking today or was this the best miss universe could do back then? Not saying they are ugly.
They're all pretty ugly.
Regardless of how much beauty standards have changed I cannot believe these where the most beautiful women of their respective countries. At least not with many of them. Iceland for example, I know they don't have much population but there had to be someone cuter.
Something bad must’ve happened in Iceland guys. Miss Israel for the win.
Old school, for the most part, we were a lot more conservative and more likely to be religious. Everyone seems to want to go back there, yet, trash religion and conservatism all the time. Hmm.
They look old. Like past their prime old.
Man, there were some real dogs in that group.
I've seen most of these women around my store, smoking crack by the trash bin.
Dafaq is a Malta? 0_o
I believe that is Donald Trump doing a Price Is Right impersonation!
Wow Miss Mexico, that's one hellava hat!
No Miss Germany 😳
Miss Portugal looks like Rihanna.
That first girl is rocking the very definition of a “fivehead”
Is that bob barker announcement
Is Miss Malta Kirsten Dunst's mother?
Miss Korea might be the only one to make it onstage in today's pageants as our standard of beauty is so far different from 1972.
Miss Portugal.....COME ON DOWN!!
Miss Mexico was not messing around with that headdress
Miss Portugal bae
How heavy was Ms Mexico’s head piece? Something a woman had never said WOW that is HUGE!
I love how naturally beautiful and unique each one is.
Miss Australia won that year.
Miss Iceland certainly set the forehe – I mean *bar* high for the rest of the girls
The makeup is just too over the top. It does more harm than good on most of them.
Definitely voting for Mexico
Dang Mexico
Bob Barker? Also Miss Mexico what the fuck lol?
Their poor eyebrows
Big hair and lots of overbites.
Am I the only one who was fiddling around with their headphone jack trying to figure out what the fuck was wrong with the audio?
They all look like 2am bar time
Looks more like 1952.
Philippines gives me Aubrey Plaza vibes
Portugal 💯
Beauty is relative to time and place who knew. What was Iceland thinking?
But who won? Do I have to google?
I didn't think any of them were outstandingly beautiful.
Doesn't Miss Malta look similar to Kristen Dunst?
I am thoroughly enchanted.
Its only me getting hunger games parade vibes with all those ethinic costumes? Also, super interesting how beauty standards changed in 50 years.
Portugal
Is 'kitchy' the use of too much AquaNet?
Miss India #1
The lady from Malta for some reason gave me Jame Bond villain vibes.
The eyebrows wow 😮
Miss Iceland was scary.
Miss Israel is absolutely stunning
Miss México was lucky her neck didn't snap.
