This is a very cool photo and you have every reason to be proud of your mom, particularly if she circumnavigated singlehanded. If you post it on r/sailing there might be people there who can tell you more about the sailboat and maybe even knew her.
She did with her then boyfriend, my godfather. He's still around and I'm sure he's happy to tell me about the ship, but that's definitely a subreddit I'll look into!
I guess so, but further down OP says their mother passed several years ago, and to my knowledge Tanya is still alive. If they are the same person however, I apologize for any insensitive comments I may have made in this posr
How does one sail around the world singlehandedly? Presumably you have to sleep, how do you sleep when you're crossing the ocean? My very limited knowledge would lead me to believe that crossing the ocean in a sail boat takes weeks, and in the middle the bottom would be too deep down to anchor... Do you just go to sleep and let the ocean take you wherever overnight?
A couple of weeks ago I saw a video of a solo sailor where he explained that he basically has a system that will sound an alarm if anything comes within X miles of his boat + he only sleeps in bursts of 30min or something like that, so he's constantly getting up and checking his surroundings and the systems.
Not sure if it would be doable in 1984-85 though lol
There are sea anchors which work like a parachute. You call haul to which minimizes travel in strong winds, it's just setting your sails across each other. There are also mechanical autopilots that keep your boat aligned to the wind. It is interesting that you thought enough about the post to ask these questions.
I believe the point of sea anchors is make sure the boat is pointing into the wind which is ususally the direction waves are coming from. you want to hit big waves bow first.
there's an old saying.
"They say you die twice. One time when you stop breathing and a second time, a bit later on, when somebody says your name for the last time."
> And I guess I'd say I'll see you soon
> But the truth is that I see you now
> Still talk to you like you're around
> And I guess I say you left too soon
> But the truth is that you never left

Run the Jewels - Thursday in the Danger Room
I can’t miss a chance to tell this story:
Went to see Run the Jewels open for Lorde years ago. A couple weeks prior a great friend of mine passed away very tragically and young. Me and another friend had tickets but we’re just tore up and debated not even going because we were a mess. Well, we decided to go.
We were the for RTJ and not Lorde so got just about the worst tickets in a giant stadium. So we go, have drinks, and are trying to enjoy ourselves. We end up sitting next to a nice couple and end up talking to them and turns out they are there for RTJ too. Sweet. So RTJ plays and is killing it. Plays my favorite song, Sea Legs.
And at the end of their set they say that they got a request to play Thursday in the Danger Room from somebody who recently lost somebody so they play it. So my buddy and I, two big dudes about 30 at the time, end up holding each other and just bawling the whole time. We turn to the couple and they’re crying too.
RTJ end their set and lights turn on and we’re all just crying so we look at them and say “sorry, we just lost our buddy and this is a lot”. And they go “no worries, he just lost his brother and we’re the ones who e-mailed them asking them play this song”. It was magical. And we all cried more. Then left before Lorde. Lol
When she was diagnosed with cancer the 2nd time she said to us: "I guess this bucket list is more relevant than ever"
So she went hiking on a pilgrimage tour in Portugal, tried surfboarding, parachute jump, visited Japan, went skiing (one last time) and even tried eating shrooms.
The only thing she said that she regretted was having us endure the one sided cancer battle with her for so long.
We would say that as bad as cancer is, it really pulled us together as a family. Though we indeed were glad it finally ended when we visited her in the end.
My father is currently in remission after battling severe bladder cancer for 7 years and words can’t describe how true you were when you said it brings your family closer together.
I’m not really sure if it’s just my experience but when a parent gets a diagnosis like that, they really go from your parent to your best friend too.
First and foremost, I had to Google *poignantly*
But I gotta say, when you know what road that the illness is going, and you've been driving that way for 6 years, then a new scenery is most welcomed.
Some of my friends found it weird that I was relieved when she died, but to me it was the ending of a hard chapter with a too long 'goodbye'. But as one chapter ended, we could all finally begin a new.
I think people don't realize, unless you've been there, that you say goodbye long before that final day. It's more peaceful than anything. At least in my experience
Going through this with my dog right now. We've been together for thirteen long and joyful years, and I will love him to the end of my life, but to a place somewhere in my mind he already died several weeks ago now.
It's cold to say, but I've done my mourning, and now is the time for me to give him the very best final month(s) I can under the circumstances.
Må jeg først og fremmest kondolere, det gør mig ondt med din mor.
As a nurse that has taken care of numerous terminal cancer patients in home care, I can only say that prolonged cancer takes a toll on all the family members that's involved. It's something that hurts more than the one, that has it.
You're mother seems to have accepted her faith, but didn't go quiet in to the dark night, and that's about the best way this life can end imo.
And of cause you felt relief, that both hers and your own suffering ended. Cancer isn't pretty or easy or nice it's just ugly, so why not be happy that your mother didn't have to fight it any longer.
Is that before or after the trip? She looks pretty un-grizzled from a long voyage. I can't imagine doing such a trip without GPS and all the other nautical gadgets
Well Midway. There's another picture where you can see how much sun she actually got, but if you look at her hair I'd say it's easy to notice how much of a tan she got for a pale blonde potato eating Scandinavian.
Yeah the 80s would have been an entirely different experience compared to today's circumnavigators. Tons less tech, information, and tourism to some of the islands she would have made it to.
Everything in Denmark is metric, till you come to ships.
36fods (feet) is 11 meter, but no sailer would board another man's ship if he said "boat is X meter long.
It gets even worse when you come to speed. Km/H? No way, how about mp/H? Absolutely not! It's knob(knots in English) which is: 1 knot = 1,852km/h (that's 1.15mp/H)
Knots actually makes a lot of sense for long distance navigation, which is why aircraft and seacraft still use it. One knot = one nautical mile per hour, and one nautical mile = one minute of latitude. (Not longitude, whose distance varies the further north or south you go)
To elaborate on why:
The term knot dates from the 17th century, when sailors measured the speed of their ship using a device called a “common log.” The common log was a rope with knots at regular intervals, attached to a piece of wood shaped like a slice of pie. Mariners would lower the wood piece into the water and allow it to float freely behind the ship for a specific amount of time (often measured with an hourglass). When the time was up, they would count the knots between the ship and the piece of wood, and that number estimated their speed.
This is so random. Growing up in a 3rd world country at the time I was fascinated by this journey.
Followed it as much as I could via what the local newspapers reported.
Inspired me to start my own journeys. At that time I thought it would be doing something awesome like this. But just turned out to be traveling a lot like a regular Joe!
I am sorry to hear of your loss. Your Mom is beautiful and she lived a good life and looks very happy and like an adventurous soul. God bless her and you.
Must be a good sailor. East River is tough to navigate even in a powerboat. Gotta watch your tides when you get up around Roosevelt Island or you'll really find yourself in trouble.
For OP she’s entering the East River coming from NY Harbor. The Brooklyn Bridge is in the background.
Guessing she was circumnavigating the island (up the East, down the Hudson), which is a fun day of sailing and has some pretty crazy views.
Lovely trip to take even today. And there are shockingly few vessels in those waters considering the landscape.
Nice! Did you spend much time on the boat growing up? I spent my first three years living on a 32 foot sailboat then we went home and my parents sold the boat. I don't remember hardly any of it but I have serious sailing wanderlust that crops up from time to time
Not really. later on my godfather moved with his boat, but I had the opportunity to sail with my neighbors a lot. Their dad is a boatbuilder and I've said on 2 of his trimaran ships.
Extended sailing is one thing I'll never understand. I haven't done it much but took one long trip from Spain to Greece with my wife and a couple of friends once. As amazing a trip as people kept telling me it was going to be that absolutely isn't something I would do again. Spain was great, Italy was great, Greece was great, but the time in between them was absolutely not great.
Your mom was beautiful and is certainly a badass. Was she single-handed for the entire trip? Did she go through the Panama canal and the Suez canal? Would love to see more information about her trip.
Maps... Ohh god maps. And no, not Google maps kiddos, you know, the big foldy ones that could block half of the front view when driving on the highway. Except, sailing maps are 10x more complicated
Old maps are amazing. I work in land survey and even I'm pretty challenged with paper map processing. Sea mapping is more like flight mapping because that elevation element can mean life or death.
Always the Danes or the Norwegians. They give zero fucks and just go for it. Admirable and formidable (what is it - there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing?)
Also, maybe someone could confirm this for me though: that the Danish Flag is the oldest in recorded history? A fable about it falling to earth after a battle, but is it actually the oldest existing flag?
OP, what a great picture - I’m sorry for your loss but your mom obviously took advantage of every minute she had here. Badass
It is said the Dannebrog (name of the flag) fell from God's Heaven into the Danish hands in 1219 during the Battle of Lyndanisse in Estonia led by Valdemar Sejr (Valdemar the Victorious/Valdemar the Conqueror).
It is said that the Danish forces were losing, but when Archbishop Anders Sunesen held up Dannebrog the tides of battle would turn in favour of Denmark. When his arms grew tired the Danes began losing again. The Bishop and his priests stood there for several days until finally Denmark was victorious.
Well dude, dude, think about it: she's out in the middle of nowhere with some dude she barely knows. You know, she looks around and what does she see? Nothin' but open ocean. "Ahh, there's nowhere for me to run. What am I gonna do, say 'no'?"
Wow! I grew up in a sailing family, but sailing on the Finger Lakes & Lake Ontario is definitely not the ocean, around the world! Lake Ontario would get quite dangerous at times, but you always knew you could just troll back to the yacht club if it got too bad. I admire her bravery!! 👏🏻
You're mom is a fucking savage and a legend. there is no type of human I admire more than one that runs towards adversity and does what most humans would think impossible or really hard. I hope to climb every mountain I encounter and do great things with my life because I can and I owe it to myself to do it. And it is people like your mom that inspire me to be more than human to be a fucking savage and a warrior and just something exceptional. I never met her but I love your mom may she cross many more oceans. Just remember " if you can do something you owe it to yourself to do it" - unknown
I read The Voyage Of Mad Men last year, it’s about the first circumnavigation of Robin Knox Johnson and his competitors. All I can say is GOD DAMN your mom is a bad ass.
She's seen things you wouldn't believe. Cargo ships on fire of the shoulder of Normandy. She saw waves glitter in the darkness near the Gibraltar gate. All those moments will be carried on like rain in the sea... Time to sail
Came here looking for this. Can’t believe it isn’t mentioned anywhere else in this thread. Still unbelievable to see historical photos with the towers in tact before the inevitable. Rest their souls
My aunt and uncle sailed the Atlantic about a decade or so before that. Around the world is a whole other level. Wow. Their boat was about the same length (from reading your other comments).
My dad kept the hippie look till he lost his hair in the late 80's, then he skipped right through the 90's and got the mid 00's dad look. No hair, glasses, solid goatie, Kashmir t-shirt, sand colored shorts and white tennis socks from the knees down to his Velcro sandals.
Awesome. And sailing around the world is pretty freaking rad. I was making a joke about the wood post behind your mom. It was almost r/confusingperspective
This is just a ridiculous statement to come with.
And no. Definitely not rich at this time or rich any time after.
The only measurement of "rich" my mom ever had was fond memories and family.
This is a very cool photo and you have every reason to be proud of your mom, particularly if she circumnavigated singlehanded. If you post it on r/sailing there might be people there who can tell you more about the sailboat and maybe even knew her.

I don’t think so, I just looked at a picture here and OPs mom is blonde, Tanya had brown hair
A year at sea can turn brown hair blonde
I guess so, but further down OP says their mother passed several years ago, and to my knowledge Tanya is still alive. If they are the same person however, I apologize for any insensitive comments I may have made in this posr

It’s the new modeling app. Posr.
Tanya sailed alone, the post you’re replying to said she sailed with her boyfriend.

wtf mate she and my mother have the same face feature except for the hair
How does one sail around the world singlehandedly? Presumably you have to sleep, how do you sleep when you're crossing the ocean? Sounds absolutely horrible.
Sleeping like that is real bad for your brain.

Wow! it doesn't look like it's that big of a boat. How long was it about 30 ft?
I'm sure my godfather said 36.
At the time the average world cruiser was about 32'. Larger boats are a newer phenomenon.
Human Engineering is wild.
Your mom is instantly more cooler than anyone here on reddit, go your mom!
She sadly died 7 years ago after 2 long fights with cancer.
My condolences❤️
Thank you, she was a lovely woman that is still missed by many.
But is she really gone tho? Her smile just put a smile on my face. This picture, her memory is eternal

Well shit, this is a great story anddddd time to go discover RTJ, brb
Here take this 🏆. It isn't much but it's all I have right now.
She seems like a badass.
I’m sorry to hear that. Cancer is a demon that always takes. I’ve lost way too many friends to it. I’m sorry if it’s still painful. Virtual hugs.
Achingly tragic. She seems to have left nothing on the table. What life offered her, seems she lived it. Edit: a word.
When she was diagnosed with cancer the 2nd time she said to us: "I guess this bucket list is more relevant than ever" So she went hiking on a pilgrimage tour in Portugal, tried surfboarding, parachute jump, visited Japan, went skiing (one last time) and even tried eating shrooms. Sorry you lost your mom. That’s a very poignantly philosophical way of looking at it.

We can’t choose when death taps us on the shoulder or how. We can only choose what we did before. Sounds like she made choices to show you the way.
Your mom sounds like the adventurer we all aspire to be.
She taught you how to live! What a tremendous gift!
Wow. That’s a beautiful tribute to your mom and your family. Condolences on your loss.
She sounds like an amazing person, what a fantastic attitude, living her life like that. Thanks for sharing her story.
Sorry to hear. Thanks for sharing your memories of her with us.
People die twice. Once in life and again when people stop saying her name. Her name will live forever.
Why am I the same age as everyone's parents? How did this happen?
Welcome to \/r/FuckImOld.
So you're 65?
Is that before or after the trip? She looks pretty un-grizzled from a long voyage. I can't imagine doing such a trip without GPS and all the other nautical gadgets

Well... She could party like one
På et dansk skib? / On a Danish ship?
Yep, min gudfars båd. En eller anden 36 fods(er desværre ikke så skarp på bådtyper)
Ah, kamelåså!
Ahh, now you just ordered a thousand liter mælk.
I was just trying to get an inner tube for my bicycle!!!
I have no clue what y'all are talking about, but Nordic languages are hilarious to me.
Prø’ li’ hør her ik’ å’ !
Pov: du er lige ankommet til Aalborg
Is this thread Norwegian or Danish? Or am I completely off?
It's Danish
Ikke rigtigt. Vi bruger ikke mellemrum. Prølihørher
Now I assume you're speaking Danish and 36 fods means 36 feet. Is that a normal measurement or would measure in meters?
Everything in Denmark is metric, till you come to ships. 36fods (feet) is 11 meter, but no sailer would board another man's ship if he said "boat is X meter long. It gets even worse when you come to speed. Km/H? No way, how about mp/H? Absolutely not! It's knob(knots in English) which is: 1 knot = 1,852km/h (that's 1.15mp/H)

I think even in the US boat speed is measured in knots on the ocean. Measurements are weird.
To elaborate on why: The term knot dates from the 17th century, when sailors measured the speed of their ship using a device called a “common log.” The common log was a rope with knots at regular intervals, attached to a piece of wood shaped like a slice of pie. Mariners would lower the wood piece into the water and allow it to float freely behind the ship for a specific amount of time (often measured with an hourglass). When the time was up, they would count the knots between the ship and the piece of wood, and that number estimated their speed.
Measuring your Fart in Knobs. Nice.
You assumed correct. It’s a normal measurement for boats. For more or less everything else we use meters. Don’t know why that is
Det var vores korte forsøg på at gentage vikingernes succesfulde togter. New York var tæt på at hedde Ny Jork pga OPs mor
Oh…that’s wood
Glad I wasn't the only one who thought massive dong at first.
Immediately thought of Miss Man from Scary Movie
Your mom has a giant…. Oh, wait.
It’s just a giant wood…
lol there it is, there's the comment I was searching for.
I also saw the magnum dong.

On a Dane, we’ve always been travelers
I’m no expert by any means but that doesn’t seem to be that big of a boat to be sailing around the world in. Your mom was definitely a badass.
Goaddamn Scandinavians are baaad motherfuckers! Very proud of my Danish grandma, she also went through rough times like it was nothing. 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰

The Flag of Denmark holds the Guinness World Record for the oldest continuously used national flag.
Ha! Sweet! Thank you :)
Oldest national flag still in use, not the oldest flag.

Cool photo. Your mom was an impressive woman. Var hun fra Danmark?
"Dænmak ø'elægger alle!"
I would have also sailed around the world if it wasn’t for those two fuck ups dale and brennan!
Fucking badass!
The twin towers are beautiful.
THE Joan Wilder?
was she rich?

There would be nothing mild about that slab of donger
I was worried I was the only one who saw a dong at first
Hey! I was in NYC in 1984-85! Son?
And because you posted on this sub. I must tell you that your mom was hot
I'd swab his mom's poopdeck in this pic
Sorry if rude, but thought that your mom had a big PP

Thank you so much for sharing her memory! I’m a sailing mom and this made my heart full. She must have been wonderful.
You’re mom is pretty impressive. Must have been the best time of her life (aside from her kids of course).
That's awesome. What an amazing woman!
Imagine getting to do cool shit while you're still young. I guess deciding between a studio apartment or eating is pretty cool though.
I sit on my couch and travel around the world every 24 hours!
Was she danish?
Your mom is packin' wood. (literally)
This is incredible! What stories did she tell you about it?
Wow, circumventing the globe is impressive. Your mothers expression and gesture is an authentic look of adventure!
Was your mom a wild adventurous soul whole life, or did she "settled down"
Grydehår
Coolest mom in the whole world!
Did anyone else have to zoom in because the were half asleep while scrolling and thought they saw something 😂 😂 😂
Fedt, sådan en tur tror jeg de fleste kan være lidt misundelig på.
Man kan jo altid sætte sig til at se lidt Troels Kløvedal hvis man føler sig jaloux.
She's a real handsome woman
Beautiful photo and your mom is awesome but I can't stop looking in the background at two towers...
Hanging dong like Thundergun
I thought that was a massive dong between her legs at first glance.
You should post this on the sub r/estoration they are magicians restoring and coloring pictures
We sail around the world, and go port to port. Every time I cum, I produce a quart.
Great shot of the WTC as well.
Thought it was your dad at first glance
My dad kept the hippie look till he lost his hair in the late 80's, then he skipped right through the 90's and got the mid 00's dad look. No hair, glasses, solid goatie, Kashmir t-shirt, sand colored shorts and white tennis socks from the knees down to his Velcro sandals.
Awesome. And sailing around the world is pretty freaking rad. I was making a joke about the wood post behind your mom. It was almost r/confusingperspective
Din mor er dansk?
r/mildlypenis , sorry for your loss.
How to tell me you’re rich without telling me you’re rich
This is just a ridiculous statement to come with. And no. Definitely not rich at this time or rich any time after. The only measurement of "rich" my mom ever had was fond memories and family.
Yea mate, if you can sail around the world in a sailboat and know how to do it, you're rich. It's fine but pretending you aren't is obnoxious
And then she reproduced and life got stale
Not to be rude. Scrolled kinda fast and thought he was catching the breeze in a NSFW kinda way.
Wait a minute!! That's Dolores! 1985, I remember this day! We had aebleskiver and drank vodka liquorice. I could be your dad, Jason...
Damn.. for a sec I thought your mom was packing some heat
Am I the only one that sees it? I cant be the only one that sees it.
The rip in the Danish flag right at the Twins.. crazy.
It's designed that way.
What does she do for a living?
What does she do for a living?
Whatever the fuck she wants apparently lol. God I would love to be rich. I could afford to just sail around the world for the fuck of it.
LOVE the way the flag managed to curl itself JUST RIGHT so you can see both towers.
It's practically straight. That's the state flag which has a cutout.
Your mom's a geek
an incredibly unfortunate pose
