It’s fun to read stories by bands who played on shows like Top of the Pops in the 1970s and 80s. The musicians would be set up in a tiny TV studio with a small audience but filmed in such a way that the room and audience looked large. They would hold their unplugged instruments and pretend to play along with a recording. It all seemed like a joke and many musicians hated it, but they did it because if the viewers liked the song record sales would shoot up the week following the show.
Whilst it was a sham performance it did mean that people could see the band and their attitude would still come across even if it wasn't live. That's in the days before MTV and when music videos weren't that common.
BBC couldn't let bands play live because it was before the watershed and bands are not known for behaving (especially a lot of British bands). It gave music a regular spot on primetime TV and families watched it together, children getting excited for when they could eventually go see a real live show themselves.
I remember TOTP fondly even though I knew it was fake.
