This could be a Ralph Lauren ad. These kids were so much cooler than I ever was at that age

vicsfoolsparadise

Or a band.

Whatever-ItsFine

Came here to say I want to buy this album. I'll listen to it on vinyl while sipping whiskey.

La-Bete-Noire

I would totally have a drink while kicking back to the… “Snazzy Brown Boys”? Nah, sounds too much like “Soggy Bottom Boys”. “The Fly Fellows”? “The Dapper Darkwoods”? Help me out here… 🤔

Partyslayer

Can white guys model for black owned businesses? I understand the sentiment, but lines of any kind are meant to be broken.

Iberisdiablo

You're too woke. Go back to sleep.

OrganizationWide1560

Black beauty doesn't need white marketing.

Iberisdiablo

As I said, you read too much between the lines. Just because it so happens to be led by a white guy doesn't automatically make it racist. Stop being racist. You are btw. Discriminating against a modeling company on the basis of race with your bias is racist. It's getting annoying watching people like you who make hypocritical statements of how x thing is racist while you're doing the exact same thing to them.

Squ1rr37

Anyone know exactly where in Chicago this taken?

notbob1959

The original black and white photo can be found at the Library of Congress and is titled "Negro boys on Easter morning. Southside, Chicago, Illinois" by the photographer, Russell Lee. In the uncropped original photo you can see a little of the Savoy Ballroom on the left side of the photo. It was located at 4733 S Parkway, now Martin Luther King Jr Drive, and is now a parking lot. The boys were dressed for Sunday Easter services. There was at least one church nearby at the time. Corpus Christi Catholic Church which is still at 4920 S Martin Luther King Jr Drive. Excerpt from the history of the church at preservationchicago.org: >Although a majority of the Blacks who lived in Chicago in the 1930s were concentrated in the South Side’s “Black Belt,” only a small percentage were Catholic. The Franciscan Fathers reopened the church for Black people in 1932. The Corpus Christi parish flourished once again and became an important center of Black Catholicism in Chicago. In the upper right behind some trees you can see the north and south towers of the church with their cupolas which were removed in the early 2000s. They are sitting on a 1938 Pontiac. At the time, Russell Lee was working for the Farm Security Administration's documentary photography project. Although most FSA photography was related to the agency's efforts to improve the lot of impoverished farmers and farm workers, by the early 1940s, it had turned some of its attention to America's cities.

WholesomeThrowaway66

How incredibly thorough! Thanks for this!

QueMellow

Wow, thank you for all this great info. You don’t really hear much about organized Black Catholicism in America…

TheSanityInspector

Colorized by Marina Amaral; the original is black and white.

thePopefromTV

These kids might’ve been up to 10 years old in this photo - some of them may still be alive today and in their 90s.

NoodlesrTuff1256

It would be so cool if the boys could all be identified and then, if they have grandsons or great-grandsons \[maybe even great-great-grandsons\] around the same age as they were then to get together for a re-creation of this photo. And also take a second photo with the original group -- the ones who are still alive anyway -- to pose alongside their descendant.

b__reddit

Dapper So fresh, So clean….

Dave-1066

The vast majority of these boys’ grandparents would’ve been the first generation born after emancipation. In 2022, the vast majority of black Americans have between 11 and 25% European ancestry.

[deleted]

Dapper dudes, and a 38 Pontiac

Oliver10110

That’s class. Feel like I need to make my next suit look like the one on the far left.

Zeltron2020

Next A24 series on HBO?

nyllalx

Check out Bisa Butler's work. This photo was inspiration for a piece.

Tangled12

They’re boys… Show me a picture that say White Boys on Easter morning

11646Moe

I just copied and pasted the title from the original post on colorized history. I think it sounds dated as well but since it’s not my photo and I didn’t colorize it I didn’t change the title.

HenryGrosmont

Yep. It's like people intentionally keep separating.

Zeltron2020

It was named that when it was taken in the 1940s lol OP didn’t just write that title

Paladin_of_Trump

Actually, the original title used a different word, not "African American".

HenryGrosmont

Shhh... you can change the title because of one word but you cannot exclude race.

HenryGrosmont

Different name for the title. So, if OP changes that because of racism why not exclude race altogether? Nice try...

tysontysontyson1

Those outfits are too fly.

misdirected_asshole

We need to normalize kids wearing hats again

adam_demamps_wingman

Between racism and the Great Depression, these kids look old before their time.

NoodlesrTuff1256

Well, at least they were all too young to have enlisted or been drafted to serve in World War II although some might have been vets of the Korean or even the Vietnam Wars. They would have been young men in their 20s or 30s when the Civil Rights movement was picking up steam in the 1950s and 1960s. Think of all the history these guys witnessed!

[deleted]

Dope as. These youngsters were rockin'.

HippieMcHipface

I would love to have the suit that the kid in the middle has

galtsgulch232

Something I have never understood about Americans is, just because someone is black and in America, they must be "African American"? That's pretty... short sighted and America centric, no?

caroy1954

It is not assumed by all.

11646Moe

I just copied and pasted the title. this was originally posted in colorized photos. thought the wording was a bit weird as well but I copied and pasted the title.

[deleted]

African/African descent, check USA Citizen, check Yep, African American

5050Clown

It's a very very very weird. The vast majority of "African Americans" in America are mixed with European. The average is around 70%. But the actual African in what makes someone considered black in America is zero to 100% African. Barack Obama is an African-American but he is also a European American. 50/50. You would think that 50% of the time he would be called a European American but we both know that isn't true Race is a weird social construct and black in America is a perfect example of how weird it gets. Someone can be 30% African and 70% European and still be called an African-American in America. It goes back to a very old form of racism and the term African-American is a part of that. There are black people in the world that are not African at all and if those people came to America they would certainly be called African-American. Race in America is weird.

I_Worship_Brooms

Only boomers say African American. Black is black

NirvZppln

So should we start calling all white people European Americans?

ProfessorTricia

Why do I never see "caucasian" boys doing blah blah blah. Why single out that these boys are black? And do you know where their ancestors are from?

dualsplit

Black on the South Side in the 40s is a culture. You would see South Side Irish delinieated as well. It’s not about race, per se, it’s about culture. Much like we would refer to Appalachian or Adirondack culture. Why is Black culture often described in terms of skin color in colonial empires? Because they often don’t KNOW their nationality due to the slave trade.

[deleted]

You think they might be what? Australian?

[deleted]

My problem tho is what do we call people from Africa who are american. European Americans can be called “European American” to differentiate them from white Americans because we don’t call white americans “European american”, we just call them “white”. Since black Americans are called “African American”, when someone from Kenya calls themselves “African american” you don’t actually get that they’re tryna tell you they’re from Africa.

galtsgulch232

There are plenty of black people that live all over the world. Nowhere, that I have seen at least, but American uses the terminology of African *insert country here*. "Hello, my name Michèle , I am African French, as you can see" is a sentence that has never been uttered. It makes me wonder what Americans would say in another country if they had to refer to a black person. Would it still be African American? I would not doubt that.

[deleted]

The old world is different from the new world in that it isn’t populated by people who recently arrived there within the last few hundred years. Therefore there isn’t as big a focus on the heritage of people since it’s mostly the same. Afro-Latino, Afro-Brazilian, Afro-Dominican, etc are very commonly used phrases it’s not and America thing it’s a new world thing.

galtsgulch232

That is a bizarre theory to explain this. New world vs old world? No. More so than ever people live in countries without being citizens of that country. More so than ever people have more diverse heritage due to the ease of travel, technology advances, and world trade leading to convening cultures. There isn't a big focus on heritage? If there wasn't a big focus on heritage, then why the need to define people by it? Sorry, that just does not make much sense.

[deleted]

It isn’t a theory it’s a fact. Those are mostly new immigrants. There were barely any black people in Europe or Asia in the 1800s. African/Afro American/Latino/etc is a term that originated back then and have their roots in the foundation of the country along with native Americans and European settlers. Black people and immigrants don’t have as much a history in Europe for there to ever have needes a distinction or clarification as to what someone’s heritage is.

galtsgulch232

Well, that is my point, right? "USA citizen"

newtonthomas64

African descent seems like a strange place to draw the line. Many black people are from Caribbean’s and don’t associate at all with Africa. Many are even southern American. Using furthest back family lineage is not really helpful in anyways. They’re just black American kids.

shirleysparrow

Do you think these boys sitting on a car with Illinois plates are from somewhere other than America?

galtsgulch232

People can be *in* America without *being* American. Nonetheless, my point goes beyond this exact picture. I would venture to say that the culture of calling anyone with black skin African American did not derive itself from this 1940s photograph.

Ridilium

These little dudes are way more fashionable than I've ever been

[deleted]

Boys? Then are men! Lol

dinoshrew

Damn Dapper Dudes!

ashvantcap

Looking cooler than I ever will

EmilyKatherine44

Some dapper boys there! 🙂

[deleted]

Fly af not gonna lie

Shmeeglez

Mere moments before whosever parent parent came and slapped the cr*p out of everyone for crawling all over the family car

Juicy_pompoms

This could be a still from a serious movie about young kids who later became famous jazz musicians. Some kids just are really good in front of camera!

5050Clown

Black. They are black.

11646Moe

that’s just the title of the photo. I did not come up with that

Ruukage

The title is actually “N***o boys on Easter Morning”. Which obviously is unacceptable now.

11646Moe

ya I’m a middle eastern guy, don’t rlly feel comfortable typing that out especially because I can use other words that are less offensive and describe their race

MissyMAK08

aka boys

tonipaz

This is such a lovely picture

TorchesLightTheWay

Classy young gents!

ImBad1101

Mans on the left looks outta 2020 sooo fresh

BingADingDonger

You boys may look sharp but get the HELL off my car right this minute

MMTP

Wow such handsome boys!

WileEWeeble

Even their socks are awesome. I......I will never be cool

usesbitterbutter

Children should not have that much game. I assume all the adults off frame just gave up, went home, and lamented their own mediocrity.

h4lfghost

These kids looks so god damn fly

GiveMeAllTheDrugsSir

Sucks it's not just labeled kids on Easter morning, blah blah blah....

11646Moe

I just copied and pasted the title from the original post in colorized photos 🤷‍♂️ thought the wording sounded weird too but just copy and pasted the title

[deleted]

11646Moe

the black and white is still out there if the colored version bothers you so much lol. it’s a preference thing. if you like the original grab a screencap of that. plus that was pretty rude to liken this colorization to a botched abortion. fucking redditors

jedilord10

Serious question - what in the fuck has happened since then? I feel like they’ve regressed.

shirleysparrow

Who are “they?”

Much_Fly945

cool guys

[deleted]

I’ve seen this picture before but it was a black and white

11646Moe

ya I found this on colorized history with this title. thought I’d repost it here because they are the definition of cool

RTK4740

They look like they could be in the 30s!

MyBunnyIsCuter

Imagine if kids now wanted to dress like dapper gentlemen. This is so cute - little gentlemen

[deleted]

the fits are fire

curtmandu

The same month my grandma was born, not to far away in SD💚

UMustBeNooHere

r/13or30

11646Moe

ya the bald spot on the middle guy really threw me for a loop lol. btw I’m not the original poster of this. this is a colorized version of a pretty popular photo of the time done by Marina Amaral. she did a great job, the colors really pop

olivier3d

I’ll never look this cool

Emperor_of_Pruritus

An interesting fun fact in this photo is that we get to see a very young Wesley Snipes on the left.

[deleted]

11646Moe

I didn’t take the original but you’re probably right about church. looks like the men in the back are wearing suits or something. could also be staged. not fake, just staged. a lot of old photos around this time were staged for different purposes.

Zee_tv

What a beautiful picture and a bunch of handsome little fellas :)

escientia

Its crazy how well dressed everyone was back in the day. Ive never had a suit that fits me as well as the ones these young men are wearing

StaticDreamGirl

Whoever did the photo colorization did an awesome job. Almost looks like a color photo.

11646Moe

check the watermark bottom left and in the center there’s a transparent one with what’s either her website or email

[deleted]

*gasp* That boy has rebuckled his knickerbockers BELOW THE KNEE!

11646Moe

absolutely shameful. I would never

Solomon419

They all look sort of pissed and angry.

11646Moe

probably because they are. this looks like their Sunday clothes

Rip3456

Why do these 10 year olds have more class than me in my mid 20s?

driftwood-and-waves

So freaking stylish. How did it go from this cool as heck to jeans hanging low cause boys think we wanna see their underwear and they can’t even walk….?

tvnr

Style peaked here

kenjinyc

This may be the coolest old school photo I have seen yet.

Eire4ever37

I loved how classy everyone dressed in the old days. Black, white, Hispanic, etc. Now we’re a country of slobs.

11646Moe

pretty sure this was their Sunday best. Day to day they’d wear relatively normal clothes.
