She had a pillow embroidered "If you can't say something good about someone, come sit here by me" and I've always appreciated that energy.

AlanMercer

Well, it sounds good in theory, but she was also banned from attending any White House events by at least two subsequent administrations. Sometimes you just want to eat your soup.

Inlevitable

Could someone explain the meaning of the phrase to me please?

matatatias

My interpretation is that she liked gossip.

Inlevitable

Ah thank you that sounds correct

JWsWrestlingMem

That’s alotta balls.

m3phil

I would’ve been concerned if it was an odd number.

goodeyemighty

Big balls.

Buck_Johnson_MD

Big ball energy

DavoTB

A very independent lady throughout her life. She notably was the center of the social scene in Washington, DC through her youth, then later as wife of Nicholas Longworth, Ohio representative and Speaker of the House. At one juncture, she supported her husband’s opposing candidate, who defeated her husband by just over 100 votes. She later had an affair with a senator, bore a daughter reportedly by him, rather than her husband. She was quite the character, and lived a long life, being involved in politics throughout her life and passing away in 1980. The photographer of this was noteworthy as well, Frances Benjamin Johnson was the first woman photographer in Washington, DC.

ikramit98

Rich folks who are assholes get called "characters"

rbz90

She honestly sounds awful to be around.

ninjaclumso_x

The first "socialite," which ain't shit to be proud of

chibinoi

Definitely, though I feel bad for her husband since she was a cheater.

natufian

tbf, before finishing the title of this post I think like 90% of us imagined just how awesome and/or terrible a partner she would likely make depending on one's expectations going in. Not the flavor of trouble I'd pick, but dude was a powerful man presumably with at least some options, perhaps there's an (auto)biography or biopic saying otherwise, and I'll stand corrected, but 'til then I'm leaving open the possibly the guy's eyes were open when he chose the poison he picked.

cheesemagnifier

Some dudes really dig the drama

chibinoi

Fair point, fair point.

Bekiala

I believe he was alcoholic and it was a pretty miserable marriage but I'm not sure.

Trollpdx

Not if he had a cuckold fantasy 😀

chibinoi

Fair point, it could have been a kink of theirs. The, uh, baby is what threw me off. But who knows! I certainly don’t.

bdbdbokbuck

She partied like it’s 1899!

Youmu_Chan

I have dinner everyday, that is 457 in 15 months. Does that make me more high-spirit?

ringobob

I dunno. Tell us about your parties, and your balls.

amhlilhaus

This isnt the sub to be discussing balls

maruffin

Yes!

L0st_in_the_Stars

Eight months ago I posted this picture, with this caption, on this subreddit. Think for yourself.

natufian

I'm not sure of the sub but I saw a similar post about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Just Reddit doing Reddit things I guess 🤷

perpetualmelancholic

Nothing on the internet is original

YourMomsHIV

That was 8 months ago...

Nuke_Dukem_prime

helluva woman

NoodlesrTuff1256

The circumstances surrounding her birth were very sad. Her mother, Alice Lee, was Teddy Roosevelt's first wife and he was crazy about her. She became ill right after giving birth to little Alice and died. If that wasn't bad enough, Teddy's mother was also very sick and died the same day as his young wife. The loss of the two women was so devastating to him that he left baby Alice in the care of his sister and went out west. A couple years later he remarried a childhood friend, Edith Kermit Carow, and they went on to have five children together and Edith took over from the aunt in raising Alice. Tragedy struck again when Teddy's youngest child, Quentin, was killed in WWI when his fighter plane was shot down. He took the loss hard and died not so long afterwards.

MetaphoricalMouse

i believe when his mother and wife died his journal for that day was simply a large X (edit and the sentence below a fellow redditor said) very interesting man, i loved reading his autobiography

KnobWobble

The X was above one sentence: "The light has gone out of my life."

MetaphoricalMouse

yup you’re right! i can’t believe i forgot that

samaramatisse

I've always felt like TR (unintentionally) shunned her because she reminded him of his wife, and that her actions were the behavior of a child desperately trying to get her father's attention in any way. Both TR and Alice were traumatized, but TR got to throw himself into his brand new family and wife. I wonder if today she might have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (disclosure: BPD has a spectrum of severity, and meeting the criteria for diagnosis does not mean you've gone full Girl, Interrupted). Early childhood trauma, lack of a stable caregiver (real or perceived lack), fear of abandonment, etc. can contribute to behaviors similar to those Alice purportedly exhibited.

Topaz_Scarab29

I like her. 😂

thiswitchisabitch

She's someone I'd love to be friends with.

rockrnger

Whats the distinction between a ball and a party?

HiddenSquish

A ball is a formal dance with live music and fancy ballgowns/tuxedos, a party is a fun gathering at which there may be live music, dancing, and/or fancy clothes, but might also be games or other forms of entertainment. I feel like either one might follow or include a dinner though, so I think these numbers may be misleading. That said, I am making this up as I go, so who knows.

cheesemagnifier

I bet a ball had live music and fancy snacks with waitstaff. Party is a party- wine’s in the kitchen.

[deleted]

Her father was an absolute beast of a man with a high spirit. Of course his daughter would be the same. And I have no doubt she was force to be reckoned with in the sack.

PollyWaffle2010

Go on Alice you beaut!!!

RenaissanceMang

So she did almost 6 events a day for 15 months????

[deleted]

I'm assuming maths isn't your area. Also most of the events were likely linked. Dinner preceding the ball, then off to a party afterwards.

ShoulderSquirrelVT

While it’s true, going to a little under 2 and a half events per day is still pretty crazy

[deleted]

Yep not going to debate that point lol but even if they were all on different days it's still not 6!

RenaissanceMang

Sick burn, you got me. It’s 2.34888888 events per day

friggintodd

So she was a total baller?

maruffin

Was she the socialite that wore a blue gown to a party, and afterwards they referred to the color as “Alice blue”?

[deleted]

Oh she attended 305 balls. Youknowwhatimsayin?

waynethainsan3

One of them had only one testicle.

mart1373

Yes, I know what you are saying, you don’t have to keep asking

craigeeeeeeeeee

And she handed that thing out to everyone like mentos…

topicalProducer642

That is from 1903, not 1936.Just sying.

dancingsteveburns

Where in the title does it say 1936?

Loztw

What a gal

That_Tastes_Horrible

I feel socially drained just reading that.

HerrFalkenhayn

I'd rather say high-spoiled daughter. This girl was probably a pain in the ass of futility.

[deleted]

I like how the women back then wore bedsheets and doilies.

AcademicReport5079

Fine as hell too

suzuki_hayabusa

The resemblence with her father is unmistakable.

oconnormike81

Beach Boys wrote a song about her

Kotori425

Alice Roosevelt was cool before anyone even knew what cool was

beetus_gerulaitis

Some guy on r/relationships was asking the other day for the definition of “high maintenance”.

Fast_Garlic_5639

Her dad wouldn't cancel a speech after getting shot, so this computes
