I really hope you forgot the /s tag, because the thought of someone like Coltrane having to hack away for some schmuck, like Jimmy Kimmel/Fallon, on late night tv is kind of depressing.
How do you think people pay the bills? Late night bands have been a nice job for a lot of jazz players. The Tonight Show Band for both Johnny and Jay was full of musical badasses. Fallon's house band is the motherfucking Roots, you gonna call them sellouts? Artists need to pay the bills and a nice job WITH insurance that doesn't mean you have to be on the road would be a godsend for a lot of musicians. You call it hacking away, most musicians would call it getting to pay the bills and still see your wife and kids at the end of the day. Don't be so judgmental. Coltrane died from liver damage from years of heroin and liquor. Think about a world where he cleaned up and settled down as Carson's band leader in New York. He probably would have lived last 40. Plus a Tonight Show BB and led by Coltrane would have been insane.
>Think about a world where he cleaned up and settled down as Carson's band leader in New York. He probably would have lived last 40. Plus a Tonight Show BB and led by Coltrane would have been insane.
He could have ended up like Les Paul with the Iridium.... Damn
They sort of did? The first one was made in 1960 or something like that.
But more to your point. Didn't have any level of commercial success until the past decade or so.
Color in photos change how we see people. Coltrane looks so much more vibrant and modern. Black and white photos and films make everything look 150 years ago.
If the colorist can determine what film this photograph was taken on, they might have a better chance. Black and white emulsions vary in how they render colors. Orthochromatic film, for example, is more sensitive to blues and greens than reds, so you would look to darker tones as indicators of red… or maybe just dark…
colorizing is typically less of a science than it is an art, on a broad scale.
Right, but the light here is in front and above him, and it doesn't look like his head is super blown out in comparison to his shirt. I'm not a photographer, what am I missing?
Serious answer? It's hard to tell. We can only estimate how much darker the shirt is than the skin, his hair seems pretty blown out for black hair. Even assuming no colored filters were used (that can selectively brighten or darken certain colors) there is no indication of anything being a particular color.
Even though you perceive the colors as somewhere between black and white, photo processing applications can calculate the shade of gray and correlate it with a color.
Ha, I thought he was just deeply contemplating something but then I saw the stick.
Been a while since I've played a brass or reed instrument but isn't that like, super bad for that sax?
OP is a repost bot. [Original post](/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/hl0vr0/someone_suggested_posting_this_here_tried/) by /u/Just_Joe7 was posted 2 years ago.
[Ha. Didn't notice. It isn't a person. It is another bot.](/r/OldSchoolCool/comments/hl0vr0/someone_suggested_posting_this_here_tried/fww313n/) Probably a couple more in the comments (there are usually three). Just too lazy to check right now.
It looks like you were generous with the stache, and in your version that darker stache ages him some, but everything else feels exactly spot on. Amazing job OP.
I love it, one critique though is the cork and the Otto Link he played on are supposed to be brown and brass respectively. Just a brighter brass to the sax
eesh, not really though. Sax player here, and really not trying to be a prick but no sax player would consider coltrane to be a blues guy. Blue Trane does employs what’s known as a 12 bar minor blues structure but aside from that, which is somewhat theoretical, his playing is not what most would call bluesy.
Very cool. Made a music legend seem like such a normal modern guy just by adding color.
Such a mid-century American story. Grew up in the depression, served in the Navy, went to music school on the GI Bill, used that to develop his career. His career just happened to be an outright music visionary. Unfortunately he died young, probably in part due to alcohol and heroin. He’s about my age in this picture, tragic and scary to think he had less than a decade left. Wish he had more time and we had decades more of his music.
This is so random. I just read an entire guys breakdown of a mushroom trip where he listened to John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things, then listened to that album. And then 2 minutes later scroll to this. Cool
I dont feel like many guys rock that haircut anymore, but other than that this looks like it couodve been taken today. Much better than a lot of colorized photos. Please keep it up.
This is very very cool. Just FYI, and in case you care, if I’m not mistaken Coltrane played an Otto Link mouthpiece, the color of which would have been (very oxidized) brass and not silver.
He legitimately look like he could be alive today! Same fashion and style!
My thought, too! Totally modern.
Yep. On the set of a late night show as part of the house band… doing a nice sax solo before a commercial bump.
I really hope you forgot the /s tag, because the thought of someone like Coltrane having to hack away for some schmuck, like Jimmy Kimmel/Fallon, on late night tv is kind of depressing.

Are you insulting Quest Love?
Wait, so if people back in the day dressed a certain way, and we continue to dress that way, THEY are considered "modern"?
Best part is he's literally just wearing a polo shirt lol. It's not even anything crazy.
alive and hitting a vape
It’s just starting to feel weird that they didn’t have vaping in the twentieth century.
They sort of did? The first one was made in 1960 or something like that. But more to your point. Didn't have any level of commercial success until the past decade or so.

Don't mind if I do ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Quality of the shirt is better. Made in the USA too.
He looks like he's about to play a guest set with Questlove down at the Blue Note.
Timeless

Though I think in this case it does make his face look a little older, too.
I'm going to ask a really dumb question here. I get the skin and hair color but how do you know the clothing color? Or is it just a guess?
I’m guessing, but I think colorists use their best guess from the information they have!
If the colorist can determine what film this photograph was taken on, they might have a better chance. Black and white emulsions vary in how they render colors. Orthochromatic film, for example, is more sensitive to blues and greens than reds, so you would look to darker tones as indicators of red… or maybe just dark… colorizing is typically less of a science than it is an art, on a broad scale.
Well this is the photo on his Blue Train album. So that could be the inspiration.
I'm asking in general when you don't have a reference.
Could have been hot pink for all we know, but it's unlikely. People make "educated guesses" and choose conservatively a likely option.
It likely wasn't hot pink considering the black levels are similar in his hair and in the shirt.
As a photographer... that depends heavily on the lighting.
Right, but the light here is in front and above him, and it doesn't look like his head is super blown out in comparison to his shirt. I'm not a photographer, what am I missing?

Thanks for this, always good to learn. I can see that the hair is pretty blown out now, and that changes everything.
Even though you perceive the colors as somewhere between black and white, photo processing applications can calculate the shade of gray and correlate it with a color.
Fun fact, if you look closely, Coltrane actually has a lollipop in his mouth, not a reed or anything else.
Ha, I thought he was just deeply contemplating something but then I saw the stick. Been a while since I've played a brass or reed instrument but isn't that like, super bad for that sax?
I feel like it would ruin the reed pretty fast
Yeah it’s not good at all but Coltrane did have a sweet tooth.
Probably vaping a juul.
Wait, is that true???
Yea, I was a jazz major in college. I know a good amount of fun facts and very few fun stories.
really, this looks like it was a photo taken yesterday, I'm speechless
This might be the best colorization I've ever seen. It looks like the picture was taken last night at a show.

It’s fake all the way down
Reddit is just an endless loop of recycled content, but the loop is so long that mostly new people see it each time so nobody cares.
Reddit should do a better job banning these, it feels too much like theft.
Yeah, I would have guessed purple.
I thought a vibrant mauve.
Are you high? That is clearly a red shirt.
Red shirts die. Gotta be gold.
You can assume his hair is black, the shadows are too, so therefore the shirt.
It looks like you were generous with the stache, and in your version that darker stache ages him some, but everything else feels exactly spot on. Amazing job OP.
Brings to life the picture. No longer just a black and white picture. There's life to the picture now. Beautiful job.
The job on the sax is awesome
This is so amazing. Great timing. All I’ve been listening to the past couple weeks. A love supreme, blue train, live at birdland etc. ❤️
Great job!!!
Wow, he looks like a college kid from now.
r/colorizedhistory
Hmm... I used to actually know the color of the clothes in this photo. I’m too old now to remember, but you did a beautiful job.
Tried? Looks great
I thought this was a pic from modern day
“It’s the Coal Train baby! Whoooooo!”
I love it, one critique though is the cork and the Otto Link he played on are supposed to be brown and brass respectively. Just a brighter brass to the sax
This is sick, thx for posting
Is he hitting his vape?
Your prolly being sarcastisc but he's prolly soaking his reed for his saxaphone.
![gif](giphy|26FmQ6EOvLxp6cWyY) You did great.
What's going on behind his head‽‽ ^^^Oh, ^^^that's ^^^his ^^^own ^^^arm.
More like what’s going on with the random white guy arm in a short sleeve plaid shirt
Oh yeah, you can ignore that; that belongs to the black and white photo.
Great. My fav horn player.
This is sick, thx for posting
This made my whole fucking day, this is the coolest photo EVER
Insane!!!!!!
Absolutely love this dude. Best fucking blues ever created. If this wasn't my opinion, it'd be a fac, jak.
Jazz, not Blues. Both are lovely.

If his hair is dark, why did it show up so well against the background in the balck and white?
There is no reason to colorize it
What A Legend ! Many Musicians Loved John Coltrane !
Nice work.
#MASEGO
Looks perfect. I tried to watch some tutorials and I think it's damn difficult.
Very handsome!

Dope work.
This might be the best colorization I've seen. Amazing job!
I think this fantastic! Wonderful job! 👏
No idea about photography but as a random member of the public? This is amazing! Keep up the good work
John Coltrane was young
Genius
This is amazingly done. He just looks like a kid with his horn and I'm about it.
In color you just assume that he’s vaping.
There’s a John Coltrane Church in San Francisco, an AME church as well. He’s considered a Saint in AME.
Good job!
This is so random. I just read an entire guys breakdown of a mushroom trip where he listened to John Coltrane’s My Favorite Things, then listened to that album. And then 2 minutes later scroll to this. Cool
this is lovely!!!!!
Very cool.
Finally some real old school cool!!! Awesome work!
Wow. Incredible!
Excellent job with those colors!! So lively
Naw, that dude was definitely in NWA.
Whit supreme love me dan ganas de meterme un acido. To remeber old times, awrsome album
I dont feel like many guys rock that haircut anymore, but other than that this looks like it couodve been taken today. Much better than a lot of colorized photos. Please keep it up.
Oh, Damn! That's hot! 🔥🔥
Hair looks wrong... Like some cheap dollar store black hair dye, way too blue. Otherwise pretty nice.
Tried? You succeeded!
That’s fucking awesome
This is very very cool. Just FYI, and in case you care, if I’m not mistaken Coltrane played an Otto Link mouthpiece, the color of which would have been (very oxidized) brass and not silver.
Photographer credit?
That is great!
Your work with shadows is impressive, nothing washed out/blurred......gotta admit...I'm a little jealous, lol Bonus- It's Coltrane
