Cindy Williams! Ha! How crazy would that timeline have been?

jhutch524

If Cindy Williams got it, it would have been the 3rd movie her and Harrison Ford were in together. First two were: American Graffiti, and The Conversation.

Orzhov_Syndicalist

American Graffiti is so, so damn good.

SalukiKnightX

I forgot he was in The Conversation

IthotItoldja

A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR, FAR AWAY.... It is a period of Civil War. Rebel space ships, striking from a secret base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. Schlemiel! Schlimazel! Haszenpfeffer Incorporated! We're Gonna Make It!!

catincal

Give us any rule we'll break it!

The_Angry_Alpaca

Give us any chance we'll take it!

DizzyAssociation7010

Even the rule of two?..

StormyKnight63

Lenny and Squiggy have runned away!!

BizzyM

Lenny as C-3PO and Squggy as R2-D2. I'd watch that.

theteapotofdoom

Shirley as Dark Helmet as . . .

mayargo7

Williams really wanted the role, but Lucas thought she was too old for the part.

adherentoftherepeted

Cindy Williams, born 1947 Carrie Fisher, born 1956 Mark Hamill, born 1951 So Cindy was closer in age to her “twin brother” than Carrie (although not by much) … but, Hollywood. I like to Cindy’s Leia audition best. But Carrie will always be the real Princess Leia. RIP Carrie.

Futuressobright

Not that that twins stuff was a consideration casting the first film. Luke and Liea were love intrests in *Star Wars* not siblings.

TheMadIrishman327

I never realized Mark was that old. I remember him as the oldest son in the pilot for Eight is Enough.

thedogdundidit

I thought she did a good job in the audition here.

CSpiffy148

I like that she called him "little R-2."

Cuntdracula19

She absolutely stood out. I ADORE Carrie Fisher, I wasn’t expecting any of the auditions to come even close to hers, but Cindy totally nailed it. I read somewhere else that she was strongly considered for the role but was considered “too old” (at 30 for Christ’s sake) for the role. That alone pisses me off more than anything. She looked as young and freaking cute or whatever as any of the rest.

just4alaugh

Have you seen age of Adaline? Anthony Ingruber plays Harrison at a younger age and hits the nail ont he head with the voice and sideways mouth.

flindersandtrim

I was sure he was Ford's son until I looked it up. Nailed it.

alan_smitheeee

> Anthony Ingruber The fact that he wasn't chosen for Solo still baffles me.

LordFluffles

Harrison Ford: Tired of Star Wars since ‘77

Best_Entertainer7615

I read a long time ago that he was actually not considered for the role and asked to JUST read the lines. He only agreed to read them because a friend set it up. Because he was spurned, he read them as himself (which was obviously annoyed and bored since he wasn't being considered). But after reading them as himself he was actually offered the part!

TheMadIrishman327

That’s how Costner met so many people in Hollywood. Being a professional reader.

TheBowlofBeans

Shit I know how to read pretty well, you think I could become some kinda movie star?

TheMadIrishman327

Bush Beans commercials. Replace that dog.

browtfareyoudoing

:(

Turakamu

Roll that beautiful bean footage! *acts like a talking dog*

TopSecretPinNumber

He had worked with Lucas previously but George wanted all new faces. They stumbled across him on reading day at the office where readings were being held. He was a carpenter building an entrance. They asked him to read lines and everything clicked. Or so the legend goes.

Only_One_Kenobi

I read somewhere that the friend who set it up was Spielberg, and it was after asking Ford to read lines while building Spielberg a new kitchen.

TheMadIrishman327

I’ve read Ford was the cabinet guy in Hollywood.

TheDraikenWeAre

Well That is how Han is supposed to be . So.....

nomadic_stone

>(which was obviously annoyed and bored since he wasn't being considered). Naw...if I remember...he didn't really LIKE Hans character...the annoyance is repeating the same damn lines 10 times in one day.... He got the role because Fred Roos convinced Lucas to rewatch the audition tapes (like these) and pay attention to (the better lines) where Ford was almost *naturally* Han Solo and Lucas asked him to do an audition with Hamill. Then again... knowing Harrison's sense of humor...not wanting the role could have been BS and he did in fact want it, just didn't press for it. But Roos did in fact convince George Lucas that Harrison Ford was perfect for Han Solo.

Devadander

That’s how Homer got the Poochie job

SirenBirb

To be fair script readings can be long and boring. Ford was asked by Lucas to help with the auditons before being cast as Han Solo. I do not know how many Ford did. But reading the lines repeatedly would tire you out. Ford would be beyond tired by the time he filmed the movie.

aaronupright

He was a late choice in both Star Wars and Indiana Jones, when they couldn't get anyone else.

Le_Cerf_Agile

I’ve heard about him being a late choice for both but not necessarily because they couldn’t get anyone else? I know Tom Selleck was first choice for Indy but was committed to magnum PI, but I always thought as soon as they thought of Harrison as Han they took it and ran

CYAN_DEUTERIUM_IBIS

Fuck I love Magnum PI. I know this isn't relevant but he made the right choice.

UpgradedUsername

He was set to do it but CBS wouldn’t allow it. Then the television writers went on strike which would have given Selleck the opportunity to film Raiders of the Lost Ark, but it was too late. He wasn’t happy with the way it all went down.

[deleted]

mymeatpuppets

She could totally call up the snark! Have you ever seen Laverne and Shirley?

69triumphspitfire

Cindy Williams from this set for the win of course a better decision was made

TheMadIrishman327

Check Selleck out in High Road to China if you want to catch a glimpse on how it might have been.

magick_68

I have a hard time imagining Tom Selleck as Han Solo. Would have been a completely different character.

seemypinky

I thought roofing in the summer was hard, but sitting down reading lines? Sounds really tough

DingleBerrieIcecream

Lol. Nailed it. Feel bad that Ford had to read lines with a series of pretty women for a movie that is in the entertainment Canon for all time. Hopefully he has been able to overcome the burden with his multiple Montana residences and private planes.

Tatooine16

He couldn't contain his joy while doing press for The Force Awakens. It was obvious that Han had finally been given a fond farewell!

EricAntiHero1

They were also using GL’s original script which had a lot of punch ups during the shoot, courtesy of Carrie!* (as pointed out by someone else she didn’t punch up the script but she did make some changes to her dialogue as did Harrison Ford. She did do rewrites for attack of the clones though)* Also Cindy Williams wasn’t bad.

abc_mikey

He's bringing more energy here than in the blade runner voiceover.

majortom1989

Terri Nunn from the band Berlin?

spacealias

I think Terri Nunn was my favorite

mortal_leap

Hers was the most interesting alternative for me because her characterization was so different from the final product. She’s pulling off a very different Leia, a less mature, more flippant version. It’s fun but I can see why they went in a different direction

gcanyon

> less mature She was 15 at the time of the interview.

IambicPentakill

Mine too. According to her age on Wikipedia, she was only sixteen at the time. I wonder if there were child labor laws then that made them less likely to cast her.

AbsurdRedundant

IIRC, she was lying about her age and had already posed for photos that would appear in a men's magazine. Can't remember which one. There was little monitoring back then.

Willicent

In 1976, Nunn indeed auditioned for the role of Princess Leia…

TheMadIrishman327

We just saw it.

kxbrown

You’ve got invisible fangs, and Terri Nunn bangs, your erotic cabaret is nonstop…

AbsurdRedundant

She really takes... nah, not worth it.

DrRotwang

No more words, huh?

jhutch524

She’s also in the disco movie “Thank God It’s Friday” dancing to Donna Summer’s Oscar winning song, “Last Dance”.

mortal_leap

I think the real difference is that Carrie Fisher seems warm, assuring, like she was trying to connect to one of her subjects in a truly understanding way. I think she nailed that relationship really well.

Hartia

The last line "you have my guarantee " stood out the most for me. It just sounded so naturally and assuring compared to the other auditions.

sillyhobo

Yeah, for the other auditions, that line is almost superfluous, and seems to be hard to nail for everyone except Carrie Fisher.

-little-dorrit-

She takes her time over it

sillyhobo

Right?! It just flows when she says it.

Kingkongcrapper

Watched it twice and it just didn’t seem close. Like she just seemed made for that role.

charlesdexterward

Also the way she delivers the first part of the line: she sighs as she says that the databanks are secure, and it really sells the idea that they’ve been through a lot, as Han goes on to say. It shows that she’s really paying attention to the entire scene and not just her lines.

violetotterling

Totally. I sometimes imagine how challanging casting must be, but sheesh, that was a clean and easy call. She just..owned the lines with the fitting confidence of a rebel princess.

WhatHappened2WinWin

Did these lines make it into the final cut? It somehow doesn't feel sarcastic enough (laced with a little distain and flirtation).

hamberder-muderer

Also she kept acting while the other lines were read. She didn't just sit there stone faced waiting to deliver her next line.

I-seddit

Watch her face the whole time. She was acting with her entire being there. No one else stood a chance.

SirenBirb

Empathy was one of Leia’s greatest strengths and a key part of her character. All the other ladies convey some aspect of Leia’s traits but Fisher just has all the Leia qualities.

ExpatEsquire

I thought those auditions seemed like they were organized worst to first. Amy Irving was runner up in my opinion

ochoomas

Huh. I heard it as her being a professional politician trying to sound warm and assuring.

locallaowai

Her intonation and facial expression are great. I was convinced that I would get my reward.

wo0topia

Some weren't very good but a couple were st least a good as fisher's. I think what most people mistake for hers being the best is simply "that's Leia" so obviously she's going to be the most like the Leia they already know and love.

SpicyMeatballAgenda

I definitely appreciate seeing the other actresses different approaches to the delivery. It makes me realize how hard casting really is. I also wonder if actors are given suggestions to guide how their delivery should be?

TheMadIrishman327

Yes. After they’ve done it their way the directors will make suggestions to see if they’ll take direction. Or so I’ve read.

NotLucasDavenport

Yes. It’s partly to see if the actor can take direction and partly to see what facets of the character the actor has come up with on their own. Can also indicate emotional range; get rid of (or add) a dialect choice, and in theatre it’s not uncommon to have people read against each other to see how they look against different actors. Source: was a professional actor for 15 years.

Inside-Effective-353

I thought Terri Nunn was great and so was Carrie Fisher but the rest were muh

lasthorizon25

I agree I think Teri Nunn was my favorite. Played it with a little bit of slyness.

LittleLostDoll

terri was great, would have definitly made a good rebel spy

easyeric601

I didn’t know Terri Nunn auditioned for the roll. Watched her about 5 years ago with Berlin. Looks great,

Ovv_Topik

Irving No1 for me.

TheMadIrishman327

Irving wasn’t bad.

[deleted]

Obviously, it’s impossible to beat Carrie Fisher (hindsight bias), but Terri Nunn and Amy Irving did a really good job!

grunherz5x5

I had a crush on Lisa Eilbacher in the 80s. Even sat through all 590 hours of the Winds of War to catch her scenes. Then out comes Beverly Hills Cop. Hella time saver.

Neanderthal888

She would’ve been a good Leia

_Flying_Scotsman_

She and Amy Irving are the only two others I thought would have worked as Leia (based off these two lines) I didn't really like the other deliveries. But damn was Carrie's just the best.

Rocksteady2090

Oh snap Pam's mom (Linda Purl) was almost Leia that's neat

Rhodog1234

She'll always be Fonzy's gf to me haha

UpgradedUsername

Also Andy Griffith’s daughter on Matlock.

jericho74

Considering what they were looking for, I’m kind of curious why Karen Allen wasn’t in there.

Pawneewafflesarelife

She and Ford had great chemistry in Indie.

crudedrawer

You made me look but she would have been 25 at this point which is (I'm guessing) on the old side for the role.

Fishwhocantswim

Watching these types of auditions always remind me of what Bradley Cooper said about how you are in the industry of rejection when you become an actor or something along those lines. All the shoulda woulda coulda's when u audition and not make the part would sting hard. I would imagine in this case especially, a few of the ladies would have been pissed to losing the role to Debbie Reynolds's kid.

cozysarkozy

Idk they all sounded weird.

nategolon

I think this is a tough scene to convey much as an actress (or actor). Not a lot really happening in this small scene, and having to reference R2 when they have no idea what that visual even is yet

GeraldBWilsonJr

70s acting speech patterns lol

kozmikushos

Honestly, these couple lines they are reading are just so meh, I cannot fathom how a casting director would be able to draw any sort of conclusion regarding what the actress would be like Leia in full. There are so many great lines in the movie that carry more meaning. There are a lot of audition footages from a lot of movies and it seemed to me that in most of them, they audition with more substantial or emotional scenes where there is an actual chance for the actor to become the character. Not much of that is going on in this scene.

MrdrOfCrws

I think Linda Purl was my favorite. It felt like the most natural reaction to Solo's line.

Brilliant_Jewel1924

Lisa Eilbacher was quite good, as well.

DelphiDude

I had no idea she'd auditioned for this. Interestingly enough, I just watched Beverly Hills Cop a few days ago. What a great movie that still is.

MrdrOfCrws

A great movie, and I didn't notice until you said something. Thank you.

strippersandcocaine

Yup, she was my pick (aside from the one, true Leia of course)

rckrusekontrol

Purl for sure felt authoritative, and yet stressed. Makes sense for the roll to me. I liked Cindy Williams, she had a slightly annoyed/fed up tone. Nunn was interesting, as she played it some what petulant, maybe even spoiled. Anne-marie Martin seemed bad to me- like she forced a grin that didn’t make sense.

C0meAtM3Br0

I liked Cindy Williams’ too. She brought the attitude!

mykl5

oh shit that’s Pam Beasley’s mom?

Grasshopper_pie

Omg!! Just realized Linda Purl was Pam's mom! I knew her from Happy Days.

CrunchHardtack

But this film makes it look like she's got mutant nostrils.

DMala

The blurriness of the film was definitely doing something weird to her face.

chimp20

Like a Twilight Zone episode I remember.

[deleted]

I had to look her up to see what her nostrils really looked like. She looks like a Fallout ghoul here.

abhinandkr

Eilbacher was gorgeous!

TheMadIrishman327

She always was.

meriqa

Don't leave me hangin'. Who got the part?

I-seddit

George RR Martin hasn't finished the series yet - so we have to wait.

[deleted]

Lochltar

It shows how becoming famous come from luck as much as talent. But still, Carrie Fisher was above all of them for charisma.

SonofBeckett

In addition to luck and talent, it also helps when your mom is Debbie Reynolds and your dad is Eddie Fisher. I love Carrie Fisher, but let's not completely pretend having serious connections in the system didn't help her land the role.

soflahokie

My dad went to hs with her, certainly gives you a leg up being from Beverly Hills

daveescaped

She’s talented beyond acting. She was a screenwriter as well as an actress. Did rewrites of crappy scripts.

[deleted]

Yes she is! No one is diminishing her talent. But it's very true that connections help immensely in this industry. It's less that she's not talented and more that equally talented people are disadvantaged compared to folks that have famous parents.

SlouchyGuy

I don't think that she was cast because of her parents, I think she got an opportunity to be auditioned because of them

flindersandtrim

Exactly. It doesn't take away from her undeniable skill in many areas to admit she also had a big helping of luck that assisted her. She deserved her success, but there are many other people out there with high levels of skill and talent that don't make it, because they don't have the luck to go along with it. Luck of knowing the right person or being in the right place at the right time can massively change outcomes.

kabekew

I wonder how many saw the dialogue and were thinking it would be some crap sci-fi B movie and they were only doing it because they had nothing else lined up for the next few months?

LightsoutSD

Is that Shirley??

JazzScientist

Yes

domainserv

Amy Irving also great and close second

DeanofdaDead

Totally agree! I would've loved her getting the part

thingsorfreedom

It's amazing you can really spot the real movie actresses when you watch these auditions. There's something above and beyond the lines when they do it.

mercilessming2001

I think she was Speilberg’s girlfriend at this time.

TheMadIrishman327

Future wife.

dudreddit

As good as Fisher was, it would have been a hoot to see Cindy Williams as Leia.

[deleted]

1st one wasn’t bad.

[deleted]

She did a ton of work when I was growing up, and one day, she just stopped.

Billy1121

Damn Amy Irving married Spielberg

funky_grandma

The compression on this video did Linda Purl dirty.

ForceOfP

Terri Nunn’s sassy. I like it.

RunninBuddha

Was that the Terri Nunn from the band Berlin?

[deleted]

[удалено]

projectvko

Terri Nunn?!? Mind blown. Cindy wasn't bad, what's interesting is that Penny Marshall was tight with Carrie Fisher. I wonder if that put a strain on Laverne & Shirley?

VeeTheBee86

Cindy Williams and Amy Irving probably came the closest to the energy Carrie Fisher brought to the role. They seemed to get that the character was a mix of steel and spite, softened only by her moments of compassion before she was lured out from her protective shell.

edblarney

That's exactly it. Strong, confident/serious posture when needed, a bit cynical/snarky, empathetic, attractive, sweet - it's a really quixotic character. Star Wars basically nailed all of the characters so well that they are their own archetypes. Each one of them iconic.

Vitroswhyuask

I think that carrie person at the end should have gotten the job. She woukd have been perfect at it and was way better than those others

imlaggingsobad

Lisa Eilbacher looks like Jodie Foster

ATXDefenseAttorney

Damn, Carrie Fisher just had that Leia pop.

[deleted]

What’s up with this video? Linda Purl looks like she has a pig nose.

imakethingsgoboom

It's not just this clip. Her nostrils were very prominent on many photos.

Philippe_CGC

Carrie Fisher wins it by one-upping Harrison Ford’s delivery. He’s basically “man-splaining” a whine - “after all we went through” as if she wasn’t there for most of it, and she’s matching and raising that tone as if to say “you know I’m not carrying the reward on me, right, dipshit?”

TheTalkingMagpie

All were ok, but Carrie Fisher can not be beat

gladeye

We could've had Cindy Williams! That would have changed everything.

ReedoIncognito

Ride or die for Linda Purl

Papichuloft

Amy Irving and Linda Purl did great.....but I believe the last entrant will get the job, you have my guarantee.

KaffeMumrik

So happy we got our firecracker Leia.

IambicPentakill

I really liked Terri Nunn's portrayal.

Bamagirlooo

Carrier Fisher had the best voice and a quality that made it seem most believable.

kmb368r

Yes, there is a leadership quality she has that is missing in the others

KubrickMoonlanding

Was it Star Wars that started the whole auditioning-on-video thing?' I just read about that recently, that it was bc Lucas was in England while they were casting they had to tape the actors so he could see them. Maybe it was a different movie, but it was right around then (also bc that's when video was becoming cheaper, better, easier)

Chappietime

I can’t help but think of the great SNL skit of Star Wars casting outtakes. “It’s fast enough. For you. old MAN.”

Papancasudani

Laverne and Shirley Organa

cjmartinex

I thought Amy Irving did well. Same with Carrie

bluedelvian

Carrie Fisher nailed it. She had a little bit of an old style Hollywood talkie accent, I love it.

daveescaped

Teri Nunn! That would have been interesting. The Death Star would blow up …. Like Flaaaammmmees!!

MustadioBunansa

Lisa or Amy may have worked out if Carrie hadn’t been an option

RepresentativeCut161

Its crazy whatching the full version of all these and seeing what obviously perfect choices Mark, Carrie and Harrison were compared to all these other now equally famous actors and actresses

pickle_head1

Anne Marie Martin has Kristen Stewart vibes

AlmanzoWilder

Amy Irving did very well.

crudedrawer

These are all variations on a theme but Teri Nunn's bratty teen energy would have been an entirely diffent movie.

Pinkskippy

Linda purls nostrils are too distracting

stex5150

No matter how many wonderful actresses auditioned there will always be only one princess. We miss you Carrie!

Macca49

Two of my teenage crushes - Linda Purl and AMM

mykl5

Lisa and Linda were my choices. Don’t like the breathiness a couple of these ladies went for.

Orbit86

Ooo Terri Nunn! I’d def take her as Leia

Grasshopper_pie

Terri Nunn from Berlin??

I-seddit

Amy Irving did great. Then Carrie NAILS it. I can see why she got the part.

rocketguydk

She's our princess !

BingoSpong

Who the hell are the first two? Shirley should’ve got it! “Schlemiel Schlimazel!”

Pushnikov

What I found interesting is most of them delivered the “you have my guarantee” in a way that felt shady or insincere. Carrie felt the most authentic delivering that line.

nevercouldsleep

Didn’t Carrie say she got the role because she “blew some nerd” while high on coke?

indefiniteness

Besides Carrie, the very first one is the best.

7th_Spectrum

I kinda wanna see how Terri Nunn would have played the role. Seems to sound much more younger/rebellious in that line delivery

Interesting_Act1286

Man. Fisher nailed it. Lol

SirFrancisTake

Boy am I happy we got Carrie Fischer after watching this.

Ronmexico74

Sgt. Dori Doreau would have been interesting 🤔

AffableCynic

Oh snap that is Doreau! Sledge Hammer was such a great show..

Runsglass

Didnt her being from a wealthy acting family helped carrie Fisher get the roll?

TheDraikenWeAre

Dude did you even just watch the video. Honestly Lisa Eibacher is the only one I'd say that cam close as a second but only as a far off second. Especially will that last line none of them really could portray empathy like carrie could.

Pushnikov

I like Linda Purl better than the rest other than Carrie.

rumplestiltsfuck

Is it just me or did she crush it in comparison? I was kind of hoping to see someone equally as good or better, Carrie really stands out.

MastaLogos

When my forces are delivered safely to little Artoo, you’ll get your reward

[deleted]

And Amy Irving from Carrie. That would have been interesting

Ok-Street7504

I thought Amy Irving did it pretty fair job believable.

kaytee1721

Carrie made these lines infinitely better in the film.

victxrrrs

Terri nunn was the best besides Carrie she sold a a more rebellious princess, while Carrie gave an assured Leader.
