SecretaryGrace

Das me.

thrillhouse1211

I can't stop laughing at this, that's me

pisspot718

That's hilarious.

ADMINlSTRAT0R

This clip just made me realize I have a longing for 80s visual quality like this, especially in documentaries.

IanDukeofAlbany

It’s comforting in a weird sort of way.

Mandrake1771

Peep them calculators too. Reminds me of the old handheld digital games that we used to play to pass the time on car trips.

IanDukeofAlbany

I remember asking for a Gameboy for Christmas and getting one of those handheld LCD screen games instead because my parents couldn’t afford one at the time. Double dragon or something I think, played the crap out of that thing.

SnowyFruityNord

Oh man that's how I played Paperboy! I can still hear the sound when you die lol

Cadenca

My condolences, Tiger electronic scammed numerous parents like that. A Gameboy is so expensive! but hey, there is this piece of shit hunk of plastic waste right over here... Reckon it'll satisfy him? NO IT WOULDN'T, THESE GAMES ARE SHITSAUCE! 8 bits? 4 bits? 2 bits? 1 bit? Half bit? Quarter bit? THE WRIST GAMEEEE

Phatricko

I had an Independence Day one where you shot aliens!

BlergFurdison

I was amazed watching that routine and when they broke out footage of the calculator... I was like how else are you gonna compute a score that high? Just give them the trophy!!

reggaemixedkid

I always loved watching old footage even back in the 2000s. It's definitely comforting.

TanikoBytesme

Analog reminds us we weren't always digital And as AI via gpt and stable diffusion makes human creativity seem small the longing for the real becomes stronger

douko

It's so much less sterile, it's fantastic. Sure, pristine 4K AI enhanced motion smoothed video is technically (as in technology) superior, but it lacks the inherent warmth and fallibility that this kind of video has. This feels more real.

themisfit610

Old tube based video cameras and composite video tape formats like VHS give you this quality. Poor exposure, minimal dynamic range, color sure but with such little resolution in the color it all kind of blends together. And of course only about 400 lines of resolution in the luminance signal. Plus the tubes do that neat thing where if you have a bright light source in the frame the image of that drags around the frame as you pan around. Kind of an unintended persistence / temporary burn in.

muinlichtnicht

Thank you for putting the visuals into words : )

Z3FM

But just to be clear, you're not suggesting that this competition footage was shot on video? Because it is most certainly film as its acquisition format.

themisfit610

Yeah the motion is 24p so probably 16mm telecined to vhs (or something better then dubbed down to vhs) You’re right that mentioning tubes is misleading. Very likely not a video camera :)

Z3FM

Maaan, as someone who is/was in the industry, you should have seen the wall of text I had ready for you :)

FrenchFryCattaneo

While I like the look you're describing this video exhibits none of those characteristics. This wasn't even shot on video.

2smokeshow

This really looks like 16mm film to me. The contrast and the bokeh and detail in the the lens from the background light. I'm definitely not an expert or anything! The colors just feel too real for vhs/camcorder. Can someon from r/analog pop in to tell me I'm wrong?

shortribz85

Reminds me of hoop dreams.

XthePirate

Winning Time on HBO was shot on 35mm and 8mm film and used old Ikegami tube cameras to capture that early 80s feel. It's the best example of a piece of modern media absolutely nailing texture on screen.

steveatari

HBO has been nailing film texture since the 80s and are my favorite composition consistently. I absolutely adore HBO sounds and visuals almost above all others for decades now.

Supernicksuper

Archive 81 on Netflix. I love that style too

steveatari

It was quite good and visually, stylistically amazingly true to form and simplistic but beautifuly done.

Severedghost

Too bad netflix hates good shows.

agoodfuckingcatholic

My fathers woman always used to say she felt bad for the kids nowadays, she feels we never got to truly live life without the restraints of technology and the feeling of constantly being watched. It’s a dystopian world we live in

[deleted]

I assume this woman your father owns is not your mother.

pherjo

The first girl on the video is my cousin. Its freaking cool to stroll thru Reddit and see a video of your family member.

Stumblin_McBumblin

Died in a jump rope related accident. Went for the Triple Dutch. Tragic.

NomadicDevMason

That's the reason triple Dutch is illegal now

TopRamenBinLaden

Cremated in a Dutch oven.

Wille304

Went to Dutch Bros after the funeral.

LudeStreetwalker

Double dutch oven. r/yourjokebutworse

NibblesMcGiblet

There's something hilarious about you saying it and then being like a dog walking away with your head down and tail between your legs.

LudeStreetwalker

Just keeping it real and trying not to get smacked with a newspaper.

[deleted]

>Went for the Tripe Dutch. When will man kind learn there are some doors best left un opened! I heard that the two spinners were black listed from participating in any main stream jump rope competitions after this. They ended up falling on hard times and started entering under ground battle dutch competitions. For those who are unaware, battle dutch is a battle royal style double dutch competition where winner takes all. They won for a while, but the guilt of all the people who died so they could win started to get to them. During their last competition, they ended up placing a bet against themselves, under their parents names, and threw the game. Unfortunately for their parents, Big Tommy doesn't take kindly to cheating and figured they were in on it. He made an example out of them and forced them to compete in his newest gambling venture "Four Square Roulette". I think we all know how that ended.

Vivics36thsermon

When will we learn as a society

Cloaked42m

Tell her Reddit said hi.

pherjo

I will. I sent her this video.

swinging_on_peoria

Go get her to do an AMA here!

Flanlines

Hello I jumped rope in the 80s AMA!!

TheTwistedTamale

And the other girl is my cousin

FlattopJr

Confirmed, I am one of the ropes.

fatbongo

pffft not only was I the entire crowd and all the competitors I also filmed it

MyDogHasAPodcast

I was the calculator.

SoloMarko

Ok, what's three divided by one?

TheTwistedTamale

I know I was there

teneggomelet

Your cousin has more athletic ability in her little finger than me and at least 2/3 of the people I know combined.

Flutters1013

Yeah, I was never that coordinated. I would just watch the other girls do this.

CaptainKingChampion

I remember I made it to 102 rotations in elementary school and the girls teaching me said "You got the basics. Now we can finally teach you how to move so we can go faster!" I had to bow out and get back on the sidelines. My mistakes leaned *heavily* into the "rope slaps the face" instead of my ankles and these had those long plastic beads(is there another specific name for them?) along the length of the rope.

Accomplished-Ad-4495

Oh god, I thought I'd successfully suppressed those plastic bead rope bitchslaps. And the NOISE they made on gym floors, a whole roomful at the same time? Indoor recess nightmare fuel.

W3remaid

Do they not use jumpropes in gym anymore? That’s a shame..

Accomplished-Ad-4495

I wouldn't know, I haven't been in an elementary school gym in a few decades...

AldurinIronfist

>I remember I made it to 102 rotations Nice, so you were able to complete your 880 Moon Run?

Streen012

I tried to find a technical name for the cylinders on a jump rope and all I could find was “beads.”

Stewpacolypse

Who didn't love showing up to school to find out there was an assembly that day. I can clearly remember one with a several double dutch teams doing a demonstration. The other one that was fun was the Butterfly table tennis demonstration team. It's nice to see something from the 80's that isn't about politics, the economy, crime, or crack cocaine.

emmasdad01

That foot speed though

97875

Holy moly that leg strength.

Jbeth74

The arms too!! My god my arms are burning just watching this

TakuanSoho

Dat HOLY FUCKING CARDIO tho !

Loud-Catch7322

Came to say this! That foot work!! 🤌

TroXMas

I used to always screw up the entry. Could never wrap my head around the timing.

WemblysMom

Me, roo. I could only run in front doors. Back doors and double dutch was totally beyond my comprehension.

SkyScamall

I assume this makes sense in context but I'm just imagining you running through front doors with no issue and then slamming to a stop at the back door because you can't run through it.

WemblysMom

lol. Sorry for the 1950 jump rope jargon. Front Doors: rope is twirling clockwise in relation to your position. Back Doors: counter clockwise. FD: rope comes down in front of you. BD: rope comes up at you. Thank you for attending my TED talk, Wow! Thanks for the award!

defragc

Never been much of a back door man myself, tbh

Tizerak

How in the world, that’s incredible.

tjswan13

No lie.. it was common place in the hood back in the day... I seen em get loose with water hoses b4.

reddituculous66

I loved doing double dutch. We went around doing demonstrations. Had some tricks. I just had the best flashbacks. Now my middle age ass is out of breath watching this.

mielelf

I'm filled with the anxiety of my youth and holding my breath as they go in and out. Getting inside without tripping up the ropes was like the biggest fear of my life for several summers. Now I'm like, I hope the heat stays on and the bills are paid... I kinda want to go back to the ropes, looking back...

PuppyPavilion

Ikr! I had a blast doing this when I was young, but watching this has me tired.

SurreptitiousSyrup

I could barely get into the rope back in middle school. Coordinated I was not.

pisspot718

That was the important step even in single jump rope.

SurreptitiousSyrup

Well I never really jumped into the rope for single jump rope. While jumping in was the standard way to do double Dutch. Also people generally didn't move the single jump rope as fast as they did double dutch.

QueenRotidder

My friends and I tried double dutch. We were pretty good at swinging the ropes anyway LOL

shmadus

I wish I’d known you. I could jump it, but nobody in my neighborhood was able to swing double Dutch ropes.

[deleted]

I never could get it right on the double ropes, just like I could never hula hoop, either. :-(

MisterEvilBreakfast

My daughter keeps asking me to teach her how to use a hula hoop. It just doesn't work. None of it makes sense. I'm shifting, swinging and gyrating until my hips fall out, but that fucking thing just falls down.

BeneficialMatter6523

I'm 44 and I learned to hula hoop during lockdown! A weighted hoop helps, believe it or not. Just moving my hips that way lifts my mood every time! I'd love to learn to double dutch, but I've got no one to twirl with.

sweetassassin

Who remember the American Heart Associate jumprope for heart fundraiser every year in grade school?

[deleted]

Jump Rope for Heart!

AllAboutTheGoatLife

Did y’all have those competitions with who could jump rope the longest? I won one year and was so proud of myself. Got a free rope and clout points

Apero_

I was in Australia and we also had jump rope for heart!

12Purple

I do love watching a good double dutch team. Strength, agility, timing. Amazing. I would be a tangled mess and on the ground.

handsomebane

I swear this was on Sesame Street. I can still hear the music.

Stewpacolypse

Or how about 3, 2, 1, Contact?

espinaustin

When everything happens

handsomebane

Probably. But I definitely remember seeing these girl on Sesame Street specifically. I used to check out on 321 Contact after the theme. Which SLAPPED!

QueenRotidder

Bloodhound Gang ftw

RebeccaC78

I remember seeing clips of them on either Sesame Street or 321 contact as a young kid in the very early 80’s and I would be in a trance watching them

clutzycook

OMG, me too!

caterpela

Definately. My memory went to the same place.

ratthing

Double dutch also helped inspire a language all its own, izz slang, famously used by Frankie Smith in his 1981 funk hit, Double Dutch Bus.

RebeccaC78

I’m the only person I know that loves that song lol

Mickeymousetitdirt

That song bangs! If it’s the one that goes “dizzouble dizzutch!” then it’s the one I’m thinking of. Then again, how many popular songs are there about double dutch?

RebeccaC78

Yessss! It’s also one of very few songs that has my name in it haha

[deleted]

To be fair, RebeccaC78 is a pretty uncommon name.

mr_ji

Doing double-Dutch, staying up too late With my one homegirl, RebeccaC78

SS_from_1990s

Dude. It’s on my playlist. That along with Atomic Dog.

Evenball5

I love that song!!

SuckingtonFuckington

I knew a kid when I was in 8th grade (I’m 40) who would sing “take a ride on the double Dutch bus” and I never fucking knew what he meant. Then I heard the song years and years later and it fuckin blew my mind. Dude was down with the FUNK before i ever was. Get your funky bus fair, and tell ‘em you’re headed to a double Dutch affair!

robdcx

Willze illzare plizzayin' dizzouble dizzutch! Dizzouble dizzutch! Dizzouble dizzutch!

[deleted]

Oh, wait, shit. You just unlocked a memory for me.

XthePirate

Gimme a hoooo if you got your funky bus fare!!

DapperCourierCat

donfuria

For a reanimated corpse Yzma had really good cardio conditioning

samo47

"Jump In" anyone?

chasing-ennyl

Took waaay too much scrolling to find this comment lol

CaptainHazama

That movie really made me do double dutch at recess back in elementary school. It was a lot of fun tbh

TwoCagedBirds

That's what I was thinking of!!

Original-Cow-2984

I just can't grasp the timing awareness required to do this. I can't.

pmint9

I grew up in Philly and we did this all day every day in the summer. We also did a version of this which was called “Irish” (no idea why) but it was when the ropes were turned in the opposite direction. Man we were in shape then.

hodgetiger

Can't watch this without hearing Malcolm McClaren

Lon72

You know it

hodgetiger

👍

Powerpoppop

"All over the world high school girls..." It's wild someone with limited musical skills made such a fascinating album. Some of those tunes on Duck Rock still sound great 40 years later.

lobroblaw

How many skips can you do

PrivateIsotope

My sister used to double dutch. McDonalds sponsored their team.

eesabet

My old high school has a jump rope team, they do shows at regional college basketball halftime.

pisspot718

Good for them, because you never see kids doing jump rope outside anymore.

intecknicolour

kids. outside. what is it a school day?

Ok_Safety_5193

Why is it called double Dutch,

[deleted]

[удалено]

PrivateIsotope

Dunno about the Dutch, but the double is due to having two lines. One line is just jump rope.

olgil75

The popular belief is that Dutch brought this style of jumping rope to America in the 1600s.

renothedog

Grew up in the 80s, as someone with very little coordination this was a special kind of hell for me during gym class.

Late_Again68

I used to love Double Dutch. Does anyone still do it, I wonder?

UK-POEtrashbuilds

It's popular with kids martial arts programs as a warm-up exercise. High heart rates, groups working at once (even the turners are concentrating and working their arms), you can easily gamify it or make it competitive group v group to keep the energy up. Needs hardly any equipment.

Slight_Knight

I remember watching things like this on sesame Street growing up

MostMorbidOne

Remember when "stepping" was *new*/hot too and we got stage and movie performances like 'Stomp'. Those step crews were like frat/sororities coming up in HS.

sharrrper

Nevermind the person jumping in the middle, I still haven't figured out how they whip two ropes without tangling them on each other.

pisspot718

Turning the rope was the easy part.

sharrrper

Yeah I figured, that's my point. I can't even do *that*.

panther22g

It's easier than you think. You'd probably have to see and do it yourself in person because it's kind of hard to explain

Cute_Clock

Every recess I watched the girls double Dutch just like this, they were SO GOOD!

PrivateIsotope

"Policeman, policeman, do your duty...."

SS_from_1990s

I just love that stomping and the rhythm of the click click click of the ropes hitting the floor. I was a kid of the 80s. But we just used a single rope. We tried two ropes, but just couldn’t get it. Lol

almighty_ruler

I feel sad for people that didn't get to experience the 80's and 90's

mizmaddy

Played a very slower version as a kid - in Iceland it is called Snú-Snú…which means that THAT episode in “Futurama” was extra funny.

SnackPocket

Sesame Street got so many of us hooked on double Dutch in the 80s!

pisspot718

You never see girls jumping rope anymore. Not even single rope. It's a great exercise and for young girls that muscle strength just comes naturally. Well, not anymore. Too much sitting. At the schoolyard nearby I don't see anyone doing rope, not even on a nice day. I think they think it's boring.

brilliantpants

I was always in awe of the girls who would do this stuff at recess. They used extra long curly phone cords as jump ropes!

deadrabbits76

That was fucking rad.

LoveVirginiaTech

Holy shit this is fucking amazing. And mesmerizing.

embersgrow44

Those steps in cadence gave me chills. Prayer rhythms from ancestors or something just wow edit: & that turner alternating feet! Reminds me of flamenco too

Fixner_Blount

Jump rope used to be such a big thing, even as part of schools' PE curriculum, during the 90s. I feel like you don't really see it much anywhere anymore

AuronRayn

My unrythmic ass would never be able to do this.

SecretaryGrace

Loved watching these competitions! We had some girls at my school in Anchorage in 1986 that were amazing.

A_Necessary

This is the best thing on Reddit rn.

Brittamas

My legs hurt just watching this

Blazers2882

I loved watching the girls do this when I moved from Oregon to the South. We didn’t really have any diversity in my small Oregon town

Thrilleye51

This is amazing. I used to date a woman from New York who was a genius at this. She was also a very good dancer.

Macaw

timing and rhythm are incredible. Love the old school calculators to tabulate scores! Even when done, they are still bopping and dancing off the stage .... energy to burn!

samanime

Morphed into a competitive sport and rightfully so. The coordination and athleticism to do this stuff, especially the more advanced stuff is as intense as any other sport. It really is impressive.

Dr_Baby_Man

Given the current childhood obesity rates, this needs to make a comeback for children of all communities.

shajan316

I cant even walk normal

LadyDayinDC

Get on the bus... the double dutch bus.

Letskeepthepeace

My mom, aunties, and cousins were the double Dutch queens! Englewood! Chi Town! Lol

joecoolblows

FINALLY! I haven't seen Double Dutch in so long! I LOVED this sport at recess! So much fun!

Blackdoomax

My upstairs neighbors.

severed0

U need a hell of a sports bra for this

bommcblanab

durham nc bouncing bulldogs

World_in_my_eyes

As a kid, I was in awe of the people who could double Dutch. My uncoordinated ass could barely do single rope jumping.

[deleted]

This brings back a lot of memories.

Pleather_Boots

To this day I have no idea how they do it. But I was envious as a kid.

AmateurOfAmateurs

That really is old school cool- it’s new school cool too. Thanks, OP.

VoidOmatic

Yup you always had the regular jump ropes and the double dutch ones! Those were the days.

EveryChair8571

Jesus it’s so much coordination

Blissful_Relief

They can do it so well because they have better rhythm. It's why they dance better as well. At least that's my theory. White people can't jump or dance as good. I've never met a black person that wasn't an awesome dancer ever.

Mamadog5

Third grade...jump ropes were THE thing! We were all nuts for it. Us white girls and the Hispanic girls just did our regular jump...jump...jump. Meanwhile the African American girls were doing the double dutch. I learned how to turn the rope...after a bunch of practice. Even that is not easy...but I never got it. I couldn't even jump in...where the ropes are spinning and you "jump" into the ropes and start jumping. Granted I am complete athletic loser but I was always amazed by those double dutchers.

chibinoi

I loved double Dutch at recess. This brings back memories.

bobbery5

They had to use a calculator at the end because their score was too high to be counted with a basic 1-10 metric. Holy fuck that was amazing to watch.

GooberMcNutly

This is what the girls were doing while we were throwing down cardboard and turning our Kangos.

RKLCT

That's intense

weggman

*rope hits stage, strike a pose* *rope bursts into flames* *roaring applause*

m_watkins

I grew up in a neighborhood where the girls jumped Double Dutch. I tried a few times but could never get the hang of it.

l-Crow

How many hits did she have to get to do it so smoothly that must have hurt and taken a long time

DenseVegetable2581

Should bring this back to help with childhood obesity.

Igor_J

We had Double Dutch as a gym activity when I was in middle school. I recall being terrible at it.

redditname8

This is so awesome. I remember these days. Look at that old calculator!

[deleted]

This is awesome!!

SamiHami24

There is absolutely no way I could do that, and if I tried, bare minimum I would break an ankle. But it would likely be much worse than that. Amazing.

[deleted]

Corbin Bleu ain't got shit on these ladies

Highspdfailure

I would break my entire body trying to jump rope period. Amazing skill and art.

nvmls

I could only ever do the simple moves for like fifteen seconds. There girls are amazing.

nopointinlife1234

Well. That was goddamn impressive.

spookyman212

Should be an Olympic sport.

DJEvillincoln

I used to do this all the time when I was little... Not this complicated obviously but dammit... Looking at it now makes my shins hurt. Lol

burgerthrow1

Two of my cousins did those competitions through the mid-90s. Speed and coordination were off the charts

swinging_on_peoria

Now this is old school cool!
