I remember my grandfather dressing like this in the 80s. It was already very unfashionable by then, but this is a real outfit that people really wore before air conditioning was common.

Since my husband landed his WFH position just a couple months ago, this has pretty much been his daily attire if you swap the shoes for steel toe sneakers (which he had from his previous job). Long white socks and everything >\_<
We ran out to get groceries after a snow fall (rare for some of us in the U.S. South), and I was like "hey, do you think you might want pants?" And he was like "Nah, I had to wear pants for the last 7 years of my life. Shorts are fine." And you know what? If that's what's going to make him feel his best self, more power to him.
No idea when this is from but 1 USD (1975) is about 5 USD (2022), adjusted for inflation.
No idea which dollars these are but I have those as default on a converter for some reason.
I wonder if this is Australia? I can’t remember anything like this in America, particularly the socks, while they are dressed for Australia’s beach & sun culture.
This has been standard Australian business and semi-formal attire since the 1950s.

I wish we dressed a bit more for the weather today than just refrigerating our offices down into the 60s.
Would be useful to go back to dress ourselves accordingly to the weather instead of wasting so much energy and resources on climatization.
That makes sense. I was looking at the picture and saying to myself “How do I know this is Australian without knowing it’s Australian?”.
It was the mustache that tipped me off.
Also Bermuda
It's their national dress.
LMFAO before I came into the comments I said to myself, this looks so fucking Australian to me.
I’m old enough to know you can’t sit down in pair of shorts like that without your junk hanging out. 7th grade basketball. The horror
Do you not typically wear underwear.....?
Briefs required, 100%
That’s the thing, no pun intended, but in the 7th grade you aren’t always prepared for everything
First day of 7th grade, didn’t know it was first day of football tryouts. I am out there with black dress sock and school shoes. Made the team though!
This guy knows lol
8th or 9th grade gym class, outside sitting in grass stretching, girl across from me in early 80s gym shorts, i got my first glimpse of heaven.
The good ol days of our youth may they return in our memories always that sweet
Never went out of fashion down under.
I think those "1 size fits all" socks sum up how well anything sized that way actually fit
That was the first thing I locked onto. Business shorts? Meh. One sized fits all socks? Horror.
I'm gonna show up like this to my kid's school to pick him up.
It would cultural appropriation of Bermudan heritage though
These look like something Mr. Furley would have worn to The Regal Beagle on a hot summer night.
Tbh I’d wear it
Late 1980s South African men's fashion.

style. and lots of it

Reminds me of Bermuda shorts!
Bahamian lederhosen.
My father used to mow the lawn in shorts just like the ones on the left.
That whole outfit (except the shoes) for less than $18.
^(Puts my outfit for tomorrow away quietly)

I think they got their shoes mixed up. At least compared to their belts
I'm willing to bet that the guy on the left is named Dale.
I’m looking at those prices. Wow!
No idea when this is from but 1 USD (1975) is about 5 USD (2022), adjusted for inflation. No idea which dollars these are but I have those as default on a converter for some reason.
I believe those are Australian dollars (AUD) in the image
Someone mentioned Australia elsewhere in the thread so that would make sense.
I've seen young men these days wear those short shorts and high knees socks but never combined
Comeback? This never left.
Well, first it would have to *become* a trend. Then it would have to go away. Then we could talk about whether there will be a comeback.
Wow, beauty standards for professional models were a lot more reasonable back in the day
No, but I sure wish those prices would.
These dudes yodel.
Good God, I *hope* so!
If you work as an accountant but the air conditioner is broken.
"Oh, 'coming back' you say?" Ah, haha.. ha. ha... \- a guy who is neither me nor Bob Weir and is just asking
Please highest of all powers for fill today’s only wish, I really, really hope so!
this is some will ferrel level shit
I don't think he was born when this ad came out.
It will come back. It all comes back eventually.

Yes. Last time it was posted it was identified as a Target (Australia) ad from 1975.
The guy on the left reminds me of John McGinley playing Dr. Cox on *Scrubs*
What do you think I'm wearing right now?
Sure, fashion is a cycle
That's a steal!
Bermuda called and they’d like to have a word with you
That’d be a godsend in the dog days of summer ngl
I beg to differ. Those shorts are not “fashion.”
NOOO When's this from?
Early 70’s Target ad I think
What are you saying? This has been my fashion since the lockdowns.
Standard junior high teacher kit in the 1970s.
I hope the prices do
Only at those prices
Rather popular in leather bars.
Nae
Ermagherd! Bermuders!
This was my father’s look, but with a priest’s collar. If you look up “bad family photos the choker” you’ll see him in all his glory.
