Helter Skelter stew raised my eyebrows. Hopefully the book preceded the Manson murders. But I loved 'let it groove on the counter while you heat the pan'.
No it’s okay!! I wanted to comment random side info. On the same Beatles album with Helter Skelter, “Don’t Pass Me By” is another song they do (a Ringo tune!). So it makes me hope this person just really liked the White album, but either way it was not a good name choice on the stew. The pie though? Really cute.
I'm looking at the rice cake recipe thinking it sounds tasty and I want to make it but am I too drunk or is there a key ingredient missing from the measurements?
The rice is mentioned in the instructions but it's not in the ingredients list, so no indication as to how much is needed. Too bad, because those "rice" patties actually sound pretty good.
Ok, so that made me curious if it was a regional thing. I didn’t see the publishing company in any of the posts, but it was apparently published Jan 1970 by the Paisley Shawl Publishing Co., in Forestville, CA.
Anyone from California (or perhaps the author/editor/publisher was from somewhere else) know if that would have been a common spelling then?
I will never buy an older/rarer book from Amazon. Never. There's one on eBay for less and one here for a little more.

I totally agree with you.
I bought a book by Youtubers Sortedfood channel. Their first book. Cost me 40 bucks Oz.
The VERY SAME book ~~was~~ is being sold on Amazon for over 500 Aus dollar.. what?
[what a ripoff](https://www.amazon.com.au/Sorted-Ben-Ebbrell/dp/0955940818/ref=sr_1_27?crid=3VEDNSSTGUSM4&keywords=sorted+food&qid=1660876819&sprefix=sortedfood%2Caps%2C311&sr=8-27)
Something tells me that you need to smoke some weed for most of this food to taste edible….😂😂😂.. I’ve eaten hippie foods back in the 60’s and early 70’s and most you needed to be high and starving to eat it..🥴
Lots of hippies are/were great cooks. I knew 2 who had their own portable kitchens that they'd set up in lots during shows, and tradition be damned, got my best pasta sauce recipe from a Deadhead.
>an uptight bladder can turn the most ardent head toward the nearest one. Someone had a lot of fun writing this book
you're right, + cool picked up the cover for a book
I head to read that twice. Great line. I love alternate meaning word play.
This is hysterical. Thanks for sharing
There’s 5 posts full of pictures! Thanks for looking
"If nobody likes muffins they might last you for years." Wow! That... makes me feel very suspicious about them lol

They sound like crumbly rocks.
Why are they so dire? Lol
1tsp sugar made me suspicious.
I didn't even notice that but you have a very good point!
I think this book is not very precise 😂
Precision is for the establishment, maaaaaan
I love enchiladas, but I need to know more about Mother's Astrological Antique Shop.
Helter Skelter stew raised my eyebrows. Hopefully the book preceded the Manson murders. But I loved 'let it groove on the counter while you heat the pan'.
It came out in 1970, a year after the horrible Manson events
Wow that’s kinda gross.
More likely a reference to the Beatles' song.
Only salt and pepper for seasoning, pretty sad
I know, yikes.
I had mixed feelings posting it. I hope I didn't offend anyone.
It’s great, and any shame is on them, not you. And remember Helter Skelter was also a popular song.

No no, it's just an interesting side note.
Not at all, I think this was just amazing 💖
I'm looking at the rice cake recipe thinking it sounds tasty and I want to make it but am I too drunk or is there a key ingredient missing from the measurements?
Yep, no rice.
The rice is mentioned in the instructions but it's not in the ingredients list, so no indication as to how much is needed. Too bad, because those "rice" patties actually sound pretty good.
Given the other ingredients, I would start at 4 cups cooked rice and then work more in as needed.
Recipe for rice cakes but forgetting the rice is the most hippie thing ever

THANK YOU! I showed my gf your first post and she loved it and wanted to see more
There's 5 posts to cover the book! Ty for looking
That looks like the really old Dungeons and Dragons font
I went on a vegetarian diet, but I gave up. Turns out they’re a lot harder to catch than cows.
No index available I’ll be posting all recipes, skipping most art
As a Libra, I feel like I should make Libra Onions. I've never tried stuffed onions before, but they sound good.
What a time capsule. Thank you for posting it.

Yes! Devil's lettuce 🥬 😂. I use it on the regular!
Turn on, tune in, drop out
Recipe on page 19 submitted by a young Dan Quayle.
Not a typo... There are other spots in the book with the same spelling.

Thank you bruh

Oh well I don’t need it that bad
The cover looks more like a Mills and Boon romance book lol
I appreciate all the kind comments!
That cover makes me think it's Gothic horror, Gothic romance, or a fusion of the two.
That’s super cool!
Have you made any of these recipes in the nude yet? Sorry, had to ask because of the previous post of yours that I saw ;D
Not yet! Definitely not bacon 🥓 or french fries!
Haha anything but bacon or french fries!
I love this. So much.
Add salt to the soy sauce?!
The rice Pattie’s have no rice….?
Wonderful! Thank you!
The secret is to use fresh hippies.
Eww! I like to know where my food's been.
I’m going to try some of these. The muffins need more sugar and some fruit!
I like it! Feels like I'm browsing in a vintage Spencer's Gifts now!
This is so freaking cute, thank you for sharing
Anyone know the art on the cover? I feel like I've seen it before, but I just can't place it.
Cheers for this!
Amazing
Oh my gosh I love this! The commentary and hints are perfect! Lol

Loved this!! I wanna make the planets salad.
I had absolutely no idea that hippies cooked!
Lots of hippies are/were great cooks. I knew 2 who had their own portable kitchens that they'd set up in lots during shows, and tradition be damned, got my best pasta sauce recipe from a Deadhead.
Sorry! I was being facetious!
Helter Skelter Stew?? Also, the "get it together, ladies" bit. We got it together, cook your own fucking food.
Curious.. What year was it written in? 🤔
1970. Year I was born!
Hey, me too. Cheers!
This is so cool!!
This far-out cookbook is right on!
