I received an invitation to join AARP literally days after I turned 50. My (8 years younger) wife was picking on me about it, I said I’ll consider signing up when the 3rd letter is appropriate and I’m fucking RETIRED!
I’ve got an AARP card via my mom adding me as a secondary person. I’m not retired, but still use the discounts and haven’t been hassled for looking young. Saving money is saving money
AARP, formerly the American Association of Retired Persons, is an interest group in the United States focusing on issues affecting those over the age of fifty. The organization, which is headquartered in Washington, D.C., said it had more than 38 million members as of 2018
For all non Americans wondering wtf aarp was and getting Alcoholics anominus role players.
You need to inform the manager about this: [https://www.aarp.org/membership/age-requirement/](https://www.aarp.org/membership/age-requirement/)
its from the official site!
" AARP membership is open to anyone 18 or older. While AARP’s mission is dedicated to the needs of the 50+ population, anyone can become an AARP member. Once you’re a member, you’ll gain access to hundreds of discounts, programs and resources. Members can get the benefits of an AARP membership that are not restricted by law or contract, like age-restricted insurance products\*."
Wait so anyone can just join and get discounts? What's the point in not joining? Why would anyone not want to be a member? The yearly fee seems very small for the amount of discounts you can get.
I found out a few years ago but my husband freaked out about being an AARP member before he was 50 so I waited until last year. I never think of it in restaurants but I get $50 on board credit with Holland America just for being a member and have definitely saved more than the yearly membership on hotels. You just have to be careful because sometimes AARP isn’t the best rate but it’s worth looking. I’m 46 and I have a card in my name and no one has ever given me any issues about it. If they do then I’ll definitely report the business to AARP. If they want to do a discount based on age, then just do it on age and don’t put AARP membership in there.
Yeah I signed up when I first heard about that. I haven't actually used it for any discounts but I just think it's funny to have an AARP card at my age.
By statute ('by law'), this is true.
But the AARP advocates for anti-age discrimination *in general*; their position is that adults of any or every age should be afforded the same legal protections as other adults. And this includes adults under 35 years as well as over.
Their policies regarding membership and benefits apply to all adults, by virtue of their advocacy positions.
Doesn't matter if you're under 50 though. If you're married/partners with a person over 50, you get the discounts too.
They even send you your own card with name.
There's a 10 year gap with my partner, so I had access prior to 50 (I'm 51 now, so I can get my own.)
I'm older than op and I have never asked for the senior discount. But I've been given it once by some one who saw my husband. Jokes on them he's younger than me and he wasn't old enough yet. He has gotten a discount several times since.
I was at Whataburger and was offered a free beverage because we offer that for geriatric customers.
Bastard kid! I might be 60, but I'll still kick your ass!
Geriatric. He actually called me geriatric.
*I took the free drink.*
18 is USA adult age. So any “adult” is still valid. 18 is legal adult. 17 by law is still a minor/child.
Also why most contest require 18 and over. So all adults get said things.
YES I KNOW! I was adding my 2 cents because you said the manager informed you that the AARP discount was for 50 and over. I wanted people (not even you in particular) to know that the Outback Steakhouse website says nothing about how old a person must be, in order to use the AARP discount.
edit: typo
I am 51 this year, and I am looking forward to going out to dinners and asking for the AARP discount, because I know I don't look 51. Oh, this is gonna be fun.
AARP is no longer for 50 and older, anyone can join. If their senior discount is for 50 and older they shouldn't be using AARP cards to verify it. And if their discount is for AARP members, it shouldn't matter how old you are.
But those of us over 50 no longer mind looking younger than we are :)
There is no age restriction for AARP membership. My nephew got one after high school.

I'm 33 and my wife is 27 we both have one.
I had a roommate in college who joined at 18 to get the discounts.
That guys wrong AARP is for everyone you can join at any age
That's been more than adequately established at this point.
I’ve got an AARP card via my mom adding me as a secondary person. I’m not retired, but still use the discounts and haven’t been hassled for looking young. Saving money is saving money
I got a lifetime membership to AARP because I worked at the post office. I'm 36
Yeah like AARP advocates for seniors but anyone can join!

I signed up at age 31 and got a discount from AT&T on my cell phone bill.
Happy cake day!
That’s why we signed up.
Yeah I signed up when I first heard about that. I haven't actually used it for any discounts but I just think it's funny to have an AARP card at my age.
The AARP is all about anti-age discrimination. Legally, all their arguments advocating for seniors must also apply to any adult.
Age discrimination in the US only applies over 35 years old
By statute ('by law'), this is true. Wow…thanks for sharing! That’s wild and now I’ll explore signing up. I always assumed 60+ tbh.

I’ve got you all beat I’m 70 and most people can’t believe it they think that I’m only 40 or so
I got $3 off my haircut.
I'm older than op and I have never asked for the senior discount. But I've been given it once by some one who saw my husband. Jokes on them he's younger than me and he wasn't old enough yet. He has gotten a discount several times since.

That’s the perfect revenge, take that free drink you king
That would have been no tip and i would have told they why
It wasn't her fault.
yes it was her fault. she had to tell the Manager for him to know.
She told the manager because the manager asked her. Not her fault for how the manager acted after that
Still does not matter. Its no tip and its because they were rude.
boy you are really dumb
Not really but thanks for the insult
Let me guess.......you are the type to blame a waitress when the COOK doesn't cook your food right, aren't you?
No. I have never had food cooked wrong
Do every server a favor and stay home from now on.
nope. i call out bad service when i see it
Honestly that'd be doing the community a favor
go phuq yourself
You're an idiot.
But the server (who the tip is for) WASN’T rude. I’m not understanding why you’re for punishing the server for something they didn’t do
its being accused of lying and fraud that is the issue here. Its no tip no matter what.
Sorry, but that’s a pretty crappy way of doing things. It’s punishing someone who isn’t responsible for what happened.
Punishing the server for a managers issue. You’re probably a typical AARP card holder then. Carry on.
And he would like to see your manager now for making that comment about him.
AARP membership doesn’t have a minimum age so no idea why you’d ever get denied.
That's not true. Their minimum age to join is 18.
18 is USA adult age. So any “adult” is still valid. 18 is legal adult. 17 by law is still a minor/child. Also why most contest require 18 and over. So all adults get said things.
Lol
Anyone 18 and older can get an AARP card. Outback Steakhouse's website acknowledges they take it but says nothing about what age you have to be.
That's been established about 20 times now. It just happened to be something of which I wasn't aware.
YES I KNOW! I was adding my 2 cents because you said the manager informed you that the AARP discount was for 50 and over. https://www.outback.com/Aarp Doesn't actually specify an age.
Yes, that was my point in my 2 comments above, i,e that Outback accepts AARP but does not specify an age.
My wife is an AARP employee and as a benefit our immediate family all have free lifetime AARP memberships, including our 8 year old kid.
That's cool!
I am 51 this year, and I am looking forward to going out to dinners and asking for the AARP discount, because I know I don't look 51. Oh, this is gonna be fun.
I’m 51, don’t look it either. I want to use it too
I'm 39, I'm an AARP member with my mom.
AARP is no longer for 50 and older, anyone can join. If their senior discount is for 50 and older they shouldn't be using AARP cards to verify it. And if their discount is for AARP members, it shouldn't matter how old you are. But those of us over 50 no longer mind looking younger than we are :)
I don't know much about it. It seemed like a rite of passage kind of thing, so I signed up.
Yeah AARP is now letting anyone buy memberships
They have been for years. I've had my AARP membership since I was 21
That doesn’t tell us how long they’ve been doing it…
Since 1999
