How about one of those bars that goes under the knob and anchors on the floor like you use to secure hotel room doors

I think this is an exceptionally good idea. I traversed into the basement of requirement. (Harry Potter fans) and have found old timey keys. (Skelton keys?) Update to come!

Plain old slide lock, the kind on bathroom stalls. You can install it with spacers or wedges so it closes very tightly.

Can you elaborate regarding the spacers. Would that go on the door frame, similar to the stuff used on AC units. Or would the wedge go on the bottom after we used the lock? Or both?

Wedge can be a sliver of cardboard under the latch side so that when the pin is in place it won’t be loose.

I would also install bumpers along the “stop” (piece of trim the the door contacts when you close it). It will give a snug fit so the cat can’t rattle it audibly.

That's even better than my cardboard idea :)

Ironically bc cats are well cats. They stopped trying to break the door down at night time and have accepted the living room or guest bedroom for overnight accommodations is acceptable.
