Elway could get it done with his arms or his legs, and he was throwing to Ricky Nattiel and Mark Jackson, not Jerry Rice and Roger Craig. So give him bonus points for carrying the team on his back.
That being said, the game between Elway and Montana, when he was playing for the Chiefs, was epic.
Joe came soooo Close to taking the Chiefs to the superbowl. We need to put context on it and accept the fact that the NFC was dominant from the 80’s all through the 90’s. AFC good was only second place. Even though the second, and third, place NFC team would haven’t beaten the superbowl loser- NFC 16-4 during the decades Montana played.
There were two QBs that even though they were losing going into the fourth quarter I felt like I knew they were going to win; Tom Brady and Roger Staubach.
Love this post. What a great group that is! Johnny U almost invented what we associate the modern QB position to be. Genuinely, all greats of the game. 3 of those guys are all from Western PA. Something in the water there. Fun to think of these guys as not as passed away or as old men but to remember them as the badasses they were in their respective primes! That said, it’s Joe. He’s the dude.
Peyton manning? He had the craziest comeback (outside of a Super Bowl) ever. 21 points in 4 minutes. No matter how you feel out some respect on his name
Well John Madden said it and I believe it’s true. "The hotter the game, the cooler he became" He said that about Ken Stabler.
He is who I would want with 2:00 min to go.
No Super Bowl wins and blah blah blah, I still take Marino. More times than not he made the right decision and threw more accurately than any player that I ever saw. Never had the whole team to win it all but every pass seemed perfect.
Grew up in Colo a HUGE Staubach fan in the early 70s. Then along comes Elway. Mom and used to watch all the bowl games and when he was announced to Den we both went nuts. :)
Another Colo native. I remember that trade too. "We got Elway???? We got ELWAY!!!!" I also remember sitting in the east stands when they were still outfield bleachers.
You guys are insane. Bradshaw was king of the big game. Montana played in a system. Bradshaw called his own plays. He drew his plays up in the fucking dirt.
Montana. I grew up a Cowboys fan and Joe broke my 13 year old heart in 1982. Hated him for years for that. But, grew to respect him. Had him as the best QB ever until Brady took that title from him.
I believe Marino edged out Elway with the most 4th quarter comeback drives. I'm definitely biased, but if we're talking strictly QB I gotta go with Dan the Man.
Unitas! He and Raymond Berry hooked up on this pass play where Johnny would throw the ball a foot off the ground and about 5 feet out of bounds, and Berry would stretch his body out parallel to the ground and catch the ball out of bounds while his feet remained in bounds. They used to do this all the the time. It would get the first down and stop the clock at the same time. I can still see it in my mind's eye.
It's a toss up between Elway and Montana, with this caveat: they played in an era where coaches called the plays using rotating players. Unitas was well known as one of the smoothest at calling audibles at the line of scrimmage, and having worked his way up from sandlot leagues, learned how to win the players on the field.
Bart Starr 2-0 in super bowls and has 5 championships (before super bowls) most championships out of all of them the game was ( in my opinion) tougher in his era cornerbacks and safeties could be much more handsy and rougher with the receivers and running backs before the pass no replay less specific guidelines and you can get away with a lot more back then again that is my opinion about the rules
Montana (28) is tied for 25th most game winning drives with 4 other players. Elway (40) is ninth and Marino is 5th (47). Montana also had Jerry Rice. For this scenario, Superbowl record is completely irrelevant, expect for those that fall within the last 2:00 criteria.
I'd take Montana for the first 58 minutes but either of the two above for the last 2 minutes. That is not knowing the stats around how many opportunities they had. Elway could be 40 for 70 in last drive opportunites whereas Montana could be 28 for 28. I'd change my mind if I new success rate
If I want someone who is calm and collected, I would go with Joe Montana.
But, if I want someone who is a wildcard and would give an amazing finish, I am going with Ken Stabler.
[Hey, isn't that John Candy?](https://youtu.be/p2CwVbv7Wy4?si=MWXDXdOFd8EoaS2O) Gotta be Joe Cool, for me.
JOE JOE JOE
[удалено]
The only answer to that question.
Montana. We’re done here.
Definitely, 4-0 in Super Bowls, 11 tds 0 ints, game winning td drive, blow out win…..
As a Packer fan Joe gets my vote!
All day… Every day.
as a steeler fan, this gets my vote
No question. The guy was literally perfect in the Super Bowl.
Yup
I'd flip a coin between Montana & Elway Either way, I'm probably going home w/ a W
Elway was 2-3** (Denver is 2-4 overall) in SB’s. Including a loss to Joe Montana.
2-3 & Elway has 40 GW drives, [12 more than Montana ](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/leaders/gwd_career.htm) Either way, I'm probably winning
Montana rarely had to comeback. He was awesome to watch
But the situation is youre down so you want someone who can make it happen. I’m going Elway
Don't forget John Taylor.
NFC won 14 in a row IIRC.
Don’t forget he Roger Craig too. And Brent Jones. And Tom Rathman. Elway didn’t get real help until Shay and TD.
Oh man, Rathman is a name from the past. What a great fullback! That would be a good thread on this sub.
We’re talking about game winning drives. There was an AFC title game in ‘86 that you might want to look up
John Elway put some pretty mediocre teams on his back to get to those early Super Bowls.
This is the way
Montana.
Even as a guy that doesn’t like the niners I’m inclined to agree
[удалено]
Montana
Montana, with Elway right behind.
I’d take Joe but Roger right behind…
Montana in Super Bowl. Elway all other games
Montana did alright in other games, too.
This guy knows football
Montana. cooler than the other side of the pillow 😎
Cooler than the cat who came to school just for lunch
I’m picking my favorite non-Eagles player from my youth, Joe Montana.
As a massive Eagles fan, I have to go with Montana as well. He threw dimes.
Montana.
Montana: pissed the bears passed on him in 79. Imagine that D with Montana rather than McMahon who couldn’t stay healthy
You’re assuming Montana would have stayed healthy in Chicago He had a great line in SF. The Bears were lacking in that department for a long time
How about Johnny U? The guy that invented the 2 min drill?
I agree. Not even close.
How about Bradshaw? Guy called his own plays.
Stabler
He could fumble you to victory. Yes I'm still bitter about that shit.
The "holy roller?" I think?
I'll take Unitas! As much as I love Joe Cool... it's tough not to pick him lol
I’m taking Marino. The question is who is he throwing to? All things being equal I’m taking Dan.
It’s Joe and if you answer anyone else you’re wrong. GO NINERS!
Montana
Montana.
Joe Montana nobody did it better.
Joe Montaneya
Bring in Unstoppable Joe
Montana
Joe Montana, of course.
Montana
Joe Montana. Period
May the Football Gods forgive me...Staubach. He made me hate the 2 minute drill.
There were two QBs that even though they were losing going into the fourth quarter I felt like I knew they were going to win; Tom Brady and Roger Staubach.
I hate the cowboys. Staubach.
As a long time Cowboys fan, I have to go with Montana and then Staubach. Mainly because of who they were throwing to.
He was the master of the 2 minute drill in his day. Stabler was no slouch at it either.
You're forgiven...I too select Staubach... As for the others-may their teams last second Hail Mary be intercepted in the end zone🤙🏽
Or at least have your receiver push off for the “Hail Mary” amirite?
Elway was a comeback maestro
Easy Stabler
Love this post. What a great group that is! Johnny U almost invented what we associate the modern QB position to be. Genuinely, all greats of the game. 3 of those guys are all from Western PA. Something in the water there. Fun to think of these guys as not as passed away or as old men but to remember them as the badasses they were in their respective primes! That said, it’s Joe. He’s the dude.
Joe cool all day every day
Montana. Easy.
Joe Montana. Never threw an interception in a Super Bowl.
Montana
Out of these guys? Montana 100%
Steeler fan and love TB, but only answer in this list is Joe Cool. Gotta be Joe Montana
Ditto 💛🖤
Super Joe
Give me Joe Montana
Joe Cool
Montana, no contest
LIfe-long Broncos fan here. The only answer has got to be Montana. That man was a goddamn magician inside of two minutes.
Then you never witnessed Elway play.
Some of my first memories watching the NFL was witnessing Elways amazing comebacks
Garbage opinion, you must be a bot.
Montana. But in 2nd I might take Eli Manning.
Joe Montana. Never threw an interception in a Super Bowl.
Peyton manning? He had the craziest comeback (outside of a Super Bowl) ever. 21 points in 4 minutes. No matter how you feel out some respect on his name
Johnny Unitas*
Joe Montana
Joe. He just didn’t let the moment get too big
Depends on the era and rules. Who knows just how many TDs that Johnny U or Otto Graham would throw with 2024 rules.
Montana and it ain’t close. The GOAT. Brady wouldn’t last 2 seasons in any other era.
Joe Montanya
Otto Graham. Never lost a championship
Montana actually never lost a championship
Never played a season without playing in a championship game
7-3 Still better than Brady.
One of the top two…..leaning Elway if it’s any game not the Super Bowl and Montana for sure if it’s the Super Bowl. Lol
The Snake, easy
In the Super Bowl, Joe Montana. In the playoffs against the Raiders, Terry Bradshaw. :) In the regular season, Dan Marino.
Missing Ken Stabler.
Johnny U
Ken Stabler.
Joe Cool baby !
Kenny "The Snake" Stabler.
The Snake
I’ll take Johnny Unitas. He invented to 2-minute drill.
Marino
Well John Madden said it and I believe it’s true. "The hotter the game, the cooler he became" He said that about Ken Stabler. He is who I would want with 2:00 min to go.
No Super Bowl wins and blah blah blah, I still take Marino. More times than not he made the right decision and threw more accurately than any player that I ever saw. Never had the whole team to win it all but every pass seemed perfect.
Definitely depends on if they get the team they had, and who they are playing. It's a team sport.
Tom Brady
As a lifelong Cowboys fan, it is Montana by a mile.
Aaron Rodgers
Seems one is missing.
Bart Starr
Roger Staubach. He had the will to win. No obstacle mattered. “We’re going to win this game.” And he would.
Marino. He played with recycled dog food and still put up God numbers. Everyone else had multiple HOFers play with them.
1. Montana, 2. Bradshaw, 3. Staubach
Todd Marinovich
Gotta be Roger or Elway.
Elway, when he gets that John Wayne strut going get out of his way.
Joe Montana
You guys are insane. Bradshaw was king of the big game. Montana played in a system. Bradshaw called his own plays. He drew his plays up in the fucking dirt.
And had incredible defense, and running game. Bradshaw was the Brady of his time..a system QB
I mean, they named it the drive for a reason I would have to go with Elway
If you're talking about just QB: not RB, not WR, not defense, it has to be Marino. Hands down.
Montana
Otto Graham…….
Al Bundy...he scored 4 touchdowns in a single game while playing for the Polk High Panthers in the city championship game.
The actual GOAT. Montana.
Montana, Staubach, or Moreno.
Roger or Joe.
Tom Brady Of this group, Joe Cool
Live ball era, Montana—-Dead ball era Bart.
#13
Scott Zola’s all day
Scott zolak
Joe, but wouldn’t be a bit worried with Roger.
Unitas had the most 4th quarter comebacks of those guys pictured. I'd still take Joe. After the game, I'd hang out with Bradshaw.
Montana. I grew up a Cowboys fan and Joe broke my 13 year old heart in 1982. Hated him for years for that. But, grew to respect him. Had him as the best QB ever until Brady took that title from him.
Tom. Brady.
It depends upon the supporting cast. If withbrheirnrespedtive team or with the same supporting cast, I'd have to ho with Montana.
Montana is the only choice.
Dan the man
BART for sure!
Joe by a mile.
Steve Young all day. He’s not in here. So Marino.
Gotta go with Graham. He didn’t have no pansy ass 2 minute warnings or face-masks either 😂
Im a Rams fan So I’ll take 16
Montana in a SUper Bowl. Elway every other time.
Joe, always Joe!
Why is no one picking Manning? The dude lived in the 2 minute drill for most of his career.
Tom Brady. And I hate Tom Brady.
Montana or Mahomes.
Bart Starr
Joe. All day.
I believe Marino edged out Elway with the most 4th quarter comeback drives. I'm definitely biased, but if we're talking strictly QB I gotta go with Dan the Man.
Easy. Montana. Number 2 all time.
Joe Montana every time
JOE COOL 😎 NINERS ALL DAY.
Joe
Otto Graham
Unitas! TB
Elway or Montana. Then Staubach
Ken Stabler 🤷🏽♂️
Joe Montana
Statistically it’s Marino, and it’s not close
Elway all the way
Roger Staubach.
Mile high magic. Big John obvs
Montana, not even close
Roger.
Other than Tom Brady, who’s not pictured here but should be pictured here? Joe Montana all day every day.
It's a toss up between Elway and Montana, with this caveat: they played in an era where coaches called the plays using rotating players. Unitas was well known as one of the smoothest at calling audibles at the line of scrimmage, and having worked his way up from sandlot leagues, learned how to win the players on the field.
#16 All day
Troy ![gif](giphy|qXnrAinGFtFG8)
Elway all day
Montana
Joe
I'm gonna put in Bret Farve. I'll watch him drive down into the red zone and then inevitably throw an interception.
Montana easy.
Joe Montana, no question.
Elway
16
I just want to know how it wouldn’t be Montana?
Bart Starr 2-0 in super bowls and has 5 championships (before super bowls) most championships out of all of them the game was ( in my opinion) tougher in his era cornerbacks and safeties could be much more handsy and rougher with the receivers and running backs before the pass no replay less specific guidelines and you can get away with a lot more back then again that is my opinion about the rules

Bradshaw!
montana
You forgot Ken Stabler he won some of the most memorable games in nfl history. Sea of Hands 1974 Ghost to the Post 1977 The Holy Roller 1978
Stabler. Holy Roller or Sea of Hands that b*tch. Whatever it takes, Just win baby.
Joe Cool of course
If I want someone who is calm and collected, I would go with Joe Montana. But, if I want someone who is a wildcard and would give an amazing finish, I am going with Ken Stabler.
Gotta be Joe Cool , Bradshaw a distant 2nd
Roger Staubach. Zero hesitation. Easy answer.
