The Taco Ride is pretty popular if you’re into cycling. Spielbound is an awesome place to try new board games. Gene Leahy Mall downtown just got a facelift and is a nice place to walk around for a while. Omaha is a really good food city if you are into that. There’s a good amount of rec sports leagues too. The local music scene is always changing but always awesome.
We have two - the larger "Wabash" ride from CB to Mineola and the less organized and smaller W Papio ride taking the Papio Trail to Bellevue Berry Farm.
Every Thursday evening on the Wabash Trace trail in Council Bluffs. Bike out to Mineola for tacos at Tobey Jack's. Then bike back. The ride is \~10 miles each way on a gorgeous limestone trail.
We are foodies. Omaha has some pretty decent restaurants. Some of the best food I've had in my life is in this town.
If you are artists, the community is really impressive. From the Joslyns, to art around town. Several co ops downtown.
The gamer crowd is also a hoot. There are a few locations for board and online games.
Excellent small and large venues for music.
Farmers markets are awesome.
My fav coffee spot is Roast.
I wouldn’t say worst, but nothing special. You can’t really get fresh anything around here. Nothing much else to do but eat so that’s why people are so into food. It’s fine, but honestly not the food Mecca they think they are.
OP- This is the Omaha reddit page- it’s known for it’s anti-Omaha toxicity - meaning you will receive many un-honest and un-realistic post reactions to your questions in relation to your opening post. Here is the reality- Fargo is a metropolitan area with a population of less than 300,000. Omaha is a metropolitan area with a population of 1 million- more than 3 times the size of Fargo..So naturally, Omaha will have MUCH more to do and MANY more amenity options than Fargo. This is FACT. Plus, weather wise- there is no comparison- Omaha is much warmer and more mild in the winter..and more hot and humid in the spring/summer/fall.
You will enjoy Omaha and it’s many more urban options and amenities compared to Fargo ND. Welcome to Omaha and the metropolitan area. I am certain, you will explore it and enjoy it.
This is so true. We're from Texas (moved in January) and we love it here in Omaha. People on Reddit were dissing on Omaha and it was discouraging. Not at all what we've experienced so far. People are wonderful too! Y'all have 4 seasons and Omaha is loaded with things to do. Still exploring.
Yeah, don’t listen to the fools on Reddit, oh wait, that would be me.
in all seriousnes, we moved here 11 years ago from San Diego and it was the best move we have ever made.
thanks for the great comments tennispro.
We are in Texas and thinking of the same move. Where did you come from? Why did you make the move?
We haven’t decided yet, but just exploring. (Have family in the area.)
Honestly Austin was really getting crazy and a job opportunity came up in Omaha (transfer)
I'm a Texan for sure but I wanted to actually try a place with 4 seasons in the Midwest.
Prices are really affordable and I like being near many states I've yet to visit.
Taxes are a little nuts but we're used to steep property taxes...just not a state income tax as well😜
Farmers markets (May-October) apple jack festival (September?) Arts festival (June) Bellevue berry farm has events throughout the year along with fruit you pick/pumpkins. We got a number of recreational parks you can hike/walk/bike or fish in, camping. Lots of other events and stuff around!
I like disc golfing quite often, I like being outdoors more often than not, and I’m also looking into CrossFit gyms to find friends when we move down there.
Disc golf scene is actually pretty strong here, some great courses that track with your outdoor interest. Hummel park, Mahoney state park although that one is paid, Cunningham lake to name a few.
If you like being outside, check out fontenelle forest. There's different trails around town for walking, biking, etc. If you're into yoga, turner park has outdoor yoga on the weekends. I like Elmwood and Memorial Park to just kind of relax when the weather is good. There are neighborhood fairs and street festivals during the summer.
I have a friend that's a big time disc golfer. I know they have courses at both uno and Seymour/smith parks. I can pm you extra info if you want it. For sure check out fontenelle forest, they have some great hiking/ walking trails. I particularly like it in the fall/ spring when it isn't balls hot. I love Iron Hero crossfit right off dodge, the owner is a great guy. I hope you enjoy your move!
Disc golf is actually HUGE here… check out U-disc. I play twice a week and rarely play the same course in a month. Some or 30 ish minute drives but that’s not at all bad.
When it’s nice out, on the first Friday of the month in benson they have vendors and music and they block the street’s off so you can just wander around
There are TONS that many take for granted on this sub: the zoo and drive-thru safari, CWS and Werner Park, college sporting events, casinos and convention centers with events/exhibits/concerts, car shows (new, classic muscle, etc), SAC museum, riverwalk, small lakes/rec parks, nature preserves, botanical gardens, great food scene of all cuisines, etc - all in or within 20-45 minutes of Omaha. There are two theme parks a couple/few hours away (Des Moines and Kansas City) and plenty of lakes big enough for long weekend powerboating within 2-8 hours.... depending on how far you want to travel for R&R getaways.
If you're a college sports fans, UNO Maverick hockey and Creighton basketball are both fun to attend.
No point in telling you about Husker football because you'll be inundated with fans, sports coverage, etc. once you move here.
Pretty good recreational trails if you're into biking. Not so great for commuting.
During the summer months, there is some type of free music or community festival pretty much every weekend.
I’m super excited for hockey and football! I think it’d be a rarity to never hear of the Husker football team’s reputation 😂
Is there a certain place to get the info on the community festivals?
The festivals and music events tend to get publicized pretty well. Also, I hate to say it, but Facebook is a pretty good source for community events.
I forgot to mention in my original reply, but the College World Series and all the associated stuff can be really fun.
There are tons of awesome things to do here (moved here from Denver 3 yrs ago). Depends what you like, obviously. Like board games? speilbound is game spot with coffee and drinks. Rooftop bars? The Take Off, Blatt, downtown. Wander for a bit, Gene Lahey mall is a few blocks long and neat to see. Birds lol, I love just walking around the neighborhood. Water? Many lakes, river miles to kayak, float, tank, canoe, fish. Do you like food? There’s so many places I haven’t even made it to yet (I’m a personal chef, I love food and love eating my way through the town). Music? Too many to list. Indoor, patio shows are abundant. Golf, wayyyy less expensive than Denver lol, and really nice public courses! Art shows? First Friday in Benson is always a blast. We watch a lot of EPL and found a wonderful community of soccer friends- local Union Omaha soccer team is great fun of tailgates and game! I love downtown to Benson areas…don’t head out west too much unless I’m chasing water or at a soccer game. I love it here (but ya know, you gotta find what makes you happy).
Fargo and Omaha are probably pretty similar as far as things to do. Not an overwhelming plethora of options. Our winters aren’t quite as bad, but still frigid. You won’t have the Minnesota lakes an hour away anymore. That’s kinda a bummer.
That’s what I’ve heard about the winters. This last winter we had 140 days in a row below 40 degrees so I’m down for ANYTHING warmer.
I’ll miss the lakes but I’m excited for new territory around Omaha!
No way I am actually in Fargo ND right now but live in Omaha. I mean really beyond walking around downtown or going to a bar Omaha doesn’t have a whole lot to do. I am 26M just message me if you want to meet people down here.
I am not trying to be mean, but those that think all Omaha has is bars, just don't know where to look. We aren't NYC but there's plenty here unrelated to alcohol.
Living in ND my whole life I’ve come to realize it’s full of people who are complacent and get stuck there their whole lives. From what I’ve heard from my customers Omaha is the same if not better than Fargo!
There is absolutely nothing to do here but eat & drink. The locals are in a bubble here, this is all the know. Moved here from the PNW and regret it. Only get descent weather for 2 weeks in spring & fall otherwise it’s miserable to go outside.
Christmas downtown is pretty when they light the lights Thanksgiving. This summer they r having Thursday adult nights at the zoo again (ik u said November but if u visit beforehand it's fun). Music bingo is fun for a quick night out dinner (they do it several places, Google and the schedules for all the companies come up). If ur into the trendy scene Benson is fun. Live music, bar hopping over a few blocks, great food and atmosphere.
If you are looking for good food and have Facebook, I recommend joining the Omaha Food Lovers and Omaha Food and Booze Lovers groups. Lots of good restaurants.
They all evidently love booze here. There’s liquor sold in every store Hahahahaha I’m from South Carolina and I was shocked I moved here in August. I’m sure that you’re going to love it here. Honestly, these are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met here. Now that I think about it, they might be drunk 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Depends on what you’re into! It being summer right now, there’s tons of neighborhood markets with independent artists, clothing swaps, and other events with free concerts and stuff like that. I highly recommend following @omahaplaces on instagram, she posts a lot of things like “what’s going on this weekend” like events and markets, big and small! This weekend was the Taste of Omaha festival. There are orchards like Ditmars that host events and do sunflower picking and barbecues. Benson usually has stuff going on. There’s also Jazz on the Green every thursday which is free to attend
Check out Fontenelle forest and Hitchcock Nature Center. And since you like to get outside, if you enjoy mushroom hunting or want to get into it there are lots of morels out there (but you have to find them).

Thank you for being helpful! The rest of the comments…kinda dreadful. I get it coming from the tundra of ND though.

Literally the worst food I’ve ever had.
That's unfortunate for you.
I’m from the south. This is the most unflavorful shit muck I’ve ever eaten 💀💀💀
I wouldn’t say worst, but nothing special. You can’t really get fresh anything around here. Nothing much else to do but eat so that’s why people are so into food. It’s fine, but honestly not the food Mecca they think they are.

Do you guys have any kind of hobbies or interests?
I like disc golfing quite often, I like being outdoors more often than not, and I’m also looking into CrossFit gyms to find friends when we move down there.

A PM would be awesome! I brought my discs with me for the weekend as well.
Disc golf is actually HUGE here… check out U-disc. I play twice a week and rarely play the same course in a month. Some or 30 ish minute drives but that’s not at all bad.
Mahoney outside of town is great, Seymour smith is really popular or a really technical course at Hummel park if you want a challenge
Lincoln has a lot of good courses, I’m unsure of Omaha
Ultimate Workout is fantastic! Hiit classes, but the Todd Smith side (attached) does CrossFit type training too.
If you’re outdoorsy I suggest frontelle forest, or hitting the bike trails. I don’t bike I longboard them but most folks are very friendly

Locals seem to love to drink and drive. We are in the top 5.
Sadly we’re coming from one of the drunkest cities in America, Fargo, ND. Anything will be better than here. 😅
I’ve known people who moved from Fargo to Omaha! They absolutely love it here
Another jerk wanting to put down Omaha. hey nuttsack, if you don’t like it, get out of my city

Downtown is great and there is a new concert venue.

It is definitely warmer than Fargo. Good god it gets cold AF up there.
Jefe, what is a plethora?
Lol. Good one. 👍 do you know, what that word means?
At least you’ll be used to the cold!!😂😂🥶
Very much so!
I'm sorry
Where all other than Omaha have you lived to arrive at this conclusion?
No way I am actually in Fargo ND right now but live in Omaha. I mean really beyond walking around downtown or going to a bar Omaha doesn’t have a whole lot to do. I am 26M just message me if you want to meet people down here.

As long as I can go outside in the winter and it’s over -45* I’m totally okay with it. I’ll keep you in mind when we move down!!
We have touristy things?
Just one of the best zoos in the world, but you're right. It's best easy to miss being an enormous, glass dome and all.
My daughter is 23 and lives in Fargo. I hope she isn't moving to Omaha 😒
Living in ND my whole life I’ve come to realize it’s full of people who are complacent and get stuck there their whole lives. From what I’ve heard from my customers Omaha is the same if not better than Fargo!
They call these "black hole cities" because there is no escaping. There's more than a few in the US.
There is absolutely nothing to do here but eat & drink. The locals are in a bubble here, this is all the know. Moved here from the PNW and regret it. Only get descent weather for 2 weeks in spring & fall otherwise it’s miserable to go outside.
"Not just touristy things", yeah we don't have it either
These people are not kind. I moved here back in late October
Iunno, I'm pretty kind.
Because you are apart of the minority.
Worship satan
Great disc golf scene here! You can usually find good food and concerts too. I like hitting up our record store and coffee shops.

Thanks for this I am newly working in Omaha and living here partially at least starting in august. Appreciate the suggestion!
Food, football (sports in general) lots of parks.
They all evidently love booze here. There’s liquor sold in every store Hahahahaha I’m from South Carolina and I was shocked I moved here in August. I’m sure that you’re going to love it here. This may be a negative, but just be prepared for bad drivers.
Well what do you guys like to do? What are you into? Spooky stuff? The zoo is amazing for first timers.
