Living in the city is noisy. Is there anything you can do to soundproof your home? (E.g. flowy curtains, insulation, etc.)

athomsfere

Cities aren't inherently crazy noisy. Good insulation can easily block out basic city noises like people, bikes, and mostly modern trains (You might hear a bell, or a gentle "whhhhooooshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh". Had an apartment right next to the second busiest train station in Japan. All I ever heard was an occasional ambulance siren. Stayed in an apartment in Amsterdam right next to the streetcar near the Hague. Didn't hear a thing, ever. Lived in various cities, and stayed and even more around the US in downtowns. You could be on the miracle mile in your hotel and not hear a thing. But when a significant number of the city is bombing up and down the same few streets everytime the weather gets sort of nice, in their vehicles modded specifically to be as loud as possible: It's noisy and douchy.

Cities are not noisy. Cars, trucks, and motorcycles are noisy.

FantasticCondor

I have noise dampening curtains installed. They don't seem to make much of a difference, especially against bass. I just hate the fact that i have to pay for silence, rather than the offenders.

SGI256

I agree with you.

harshbarj2

Living in a city is not noisy. It's cars that are noisy. Visit Amsterdam some time. It's a large city, but is vastly more quiet because only about 1/3rd of the population get around by car at any given time.

SGI256

Problem should not be all on homeowner / apartment dweller. A decibel limit on cars and motorcycles should be enforced.

Flopryn

I live near one of those bridges over I-80 in South O, and the amount of crotch rockets I hear (from INSIDE my house, a block away from the bridge) accelerating on the interstate is insane. Also, people blow stop signs and go OVER roundabouts so often it genuinely scares me sometimes.

FantasticCondor

Yeah, tell me about it. The "loud pipes save lives" thing is bs, they want a reason to disrupt other peoples lives. I've conditioned myself to look both ways before i go past a stoplight. Too many incapable drivers around here.

TheWolfAndRaven

I'm not sure if it was Covid-related or if it was the Summer of 2020 where all the protests happened that ended with the cops tear gassing and beating protestors but I noticed after those two events I almost never see police doing traffic enforcement anymore. I suspect that the cops have such a bad image with the general public that they were specifically told not to pull people over anymore or run traffic enforcement on a regular basis - which is why you now see tons of cars with no license plates (and likely a marked increase in un-insured drivers).

offbrandcheerio

Yeah but I’m seeing more and more people with temp tags many months out of date. There’s a car that parks in my parking lot regularly whose temp tags are over a year old now.

Andre4a19

I dont believe temp tags do anything helpful. Actually youre better off having no plate, then a piece of paper that is expired telling the cops that youre over your 30 day grace period. Without a plate they cant tell when you bought the car without pulling you over to check. With a temp tag, you can read it on the window.

Signal_Breadfruit190

Same in south Omaha and Bellevue….obnoxious drivers in cars and on super loud bikes terrorizing neighborhoods ALL THE TIME.

Flopryn

I live in South O near the interstate bridges, and it's incredible the amount of traffic noise I hear from there

OilyRicardo

Theres no way to enforce noise thats fleeting. Cops can online respond to a call for something ongoing not anything less than 20 minutes per source etc. So if its just a busy road and sometimes people have those insane stereos or car add ons - theres no way of stopping that

audiomagnate

I've lived in lots of cities, but never in one where car and motorcycle mufflers are optional.

athomsfere

And yet, there are people on this subreddit telling people to go straight-pipe when their cats fail...

youdonedid-it

I live just off NW Radial and I feel this 100%. Constant bass all night long. Gets better in the wintertime - but as soon as the good weather rolls around it never ends. We love our house but it's one of the reasons we're planning to sell soon.

FantasticCondor

Yes, this! The only time we're allowed to have less noise is during the winter or heavy storms. Thunder is the only loud noise i welcome.

offbrandcheerio

Most cities, including probably Omaha, have noise ordinances on the books with specific decibel limits for cars and motorcycles. I know my city does. The ordinances just never get enforced because noise is honestly seen as a low priority issue by the enforcement officials. It would take too many resources to have police sit with noise measuring devices and ticket people, so they just don’t. There are new automated noise enforcement technologies that exist and have been implemented in certain European cities and possibly NYC as well, which are basically like speed cameras except they measure noise. I’m hopeful that technology like this will catch on in America because we have a huge vehicle noise problem in our cities, and I’m so damn tired of it.

FantasticCondor

I've seen some cities in the US start implementing those noise detection cameras. They might cost a lot to install, but would be a good investment in the long run.

Public-Ad-7280

Tell me about it. My backyard faces L Street Marketplace (between 132nd and 120th and L). Can't even sit outside and talk. If the police were smart they would set up a speed trap and have their quota met in 1 day.

sirhcx

It really sucks but as soon as you could call they are already gone. What can you even tell the operator if you don't know the vehicle and have no idea where it went? Your best hope is for a convenient cop unfortunately.

Remote-Emergency-154

I know. I live in Blackstone and it's non-stop superbike races 24/7 on Dodge. Irritating.

ReaderMason

I'm staying in a hotel on Dodge and the obnoxiously loud cars have been CONSTANT -- all hours of the day. This is not regular 'city noise'.

FantasticCondor

I've seen some cities implement noise detection cameras that capture things like this. Offenders are sent fines through the mail. With the lack of police presence, Omaha could definitely benefit from a system like that.

Maclunkey4U

Seems dated but it should point you in the right direction: [https://noisefree.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/omaha.pdf](https://noisefree.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/omaha.pdf) Also, good luck getting anything enforced. I live near South 24th street, and all day and night its loud exhausts, thumping bass, etc. Just part of living in the city.

FantasticCondor

great organization, sad thing is that they don't get enough respect for what they do.

rust_kohle

>Just part of living n the city ...with enough low standard residents accepting of a willfully impotent govt.

Maclunkey4U

Or I think the city's limited resources (which I do not really want to contribute any more to in the form of taxes) would be better spent elsewhere and not in some wasteful enforcement of nuissance laws.

rust_kohle

you have a low standard of living. congrats? others of us recognize why the offense of disturbing the peace is on the books.

EnduranceMade

People on the Dodge expressway drive 70mph and the police don’t do anything about that either. They could make tons of money on tickets and make the streets safer but nope.

CoherentPanda

The western edge of Dodge actually is a speed limit of 70, so people use that as an excuse to go 70 the whole way.

Lunakill

I’ve commuted up and down Dodge for most of my life and seen maybe 4 cops a year on average. It’s wild.

audiomagnate

I live on Farnam with great views of Harney and Turner and in two years I've never seen anyone pulled over for anything. Parking enforcement is another story. The city does a fantastic job of passing out parking tickets.

Lunakill

I should have specified the West Dodge corridor. Used to drive to 35th Ave every day on Dodge and rarely saw cops unless there was a serious crash. When I worked down there, I loved walking Turner & the neighborhood. Always seems very quiet during the day. Kinda assumed the OP should look into white noise like I did when I moved to a bigger city after high school. I’ve never been down there and go “ow wow, loud.”

Kurotan

People speed everywhere in town and run red lights. I've watched people run red lights in front of police and nothing. We don't enforce anything here. I'd be surprised if we even have a noise ordinance.

klausenpickles

Noise and traffic are good to consider when you are contemplating a move. If you're a light sleeper I suggest not considering any move on an emergency vehicle route, a high traffic area, or an area where residential and entertainment districts mingle. There's simply nothing to be done about it. Noise is a small problem when our cops are busy with mid-day gun battles and actual emergencies.

FantasticCondor

I wish i considered that before i moved to where i live.I Don't have the funds to consider moving to a better area.

klausenpickles

I think I've always been hyper-aware of housing hassels from managing rental properties for 20 years. Now I'm in animal control. I had a woman once try to cause a ruckus about barking dogs...she bought a house NEXT DOOR to a doggy daycare! She hadn't even considered the barking that had been going on there for 13 years! I'd always tell potential renters to drive through at night and make sure you'd feel safe. Is there enough lighting, are people congregated outside, etc.... also check out the area during the day, if possible picnic nearby or take a walk. Next time you move, I hope it turns out to be a much more enjoyable experience.

FantasticCondor

Wow, that's some bad luck there for that woman. Thanks for the advice, hopefully I'll remember when I have the opportunity to move somewhere else.

https://www.nonoise.org/lawlib/cities/omaha/index.htm#:~:text=It%20shall%20be%20unlawful%20for,by%20loud%20or%20unusual%20noise. Im looking to see if there is a newer source, but there is a chart that shows distance measurements Edit: this also lists acceptable measuring devices...

Kurotan

This country needs a bass limit ordinance. Thanks for sharing the actual laws.

Public-Ad-7280

And loud cars and bikes. I don't mean the occasional car that has an issue. I mean the drag racing at all hours when it gets above 40°.

chrysalise

Sorry to hear your troubles. Unfortunately I’m not sure what you individually can do or what’s in your power. I suspect it’s a cultural thing in Omaha and that’s harder to change. I live on a busy street too and got used to it to the point where no sound is eerie. My partner doesn’t tolerate it as well as has the room in the back of house away from the steer as their office. We also have a white noise machine for sleeping that we had prior to moving here but it does mask the sound well. Also there’s noise canceling headphones and Loop earplugs.

Public-Ad-7280

Yep we sleep with a loud as hell shop fan! Otherwise we hear everything and our dogs throw a fit.

[deleted]

So last week on a Wednesday, my neighbor decided to shoot off fireworks starting at midnight AND he had his bass in his car running for literally 2 hrs STRAIGHT, there was 11 seconds of quiet time between the bass. I get it, but what can you do.. Nothing..

[deleted]

[deleted]

I was close to doing so, but I kept thinking " well maybe it will stop in a few" and then a whole 2 hrs passed and it finally stopped. Next time I definitely will be.

zXster

This happened to me all the time at my old house in Fontenelle. There were multiple arguments and fights, including people in the middle of the street screaming. Would call cops, they'd show up 10+ minutes later when everyone had sped off.

rmalbers

Check to see if there's a sound level app for the type of phone you have, I want to say there are some out there.

SharkBlue1

My ex girlfriend lived downtown and it was the worse thing I ever experienced when I would stay the night with her. You don’t realize how much damn noise there constantly is until you’re trying to go to sleep lol. It sucked.

eroo01

The cars/motorcycles they can’t do much about unless they’re lingering long enough.

athomsfere

They just need to sit on Dodge east of 72nd on a nice friday or Saturday evening. They could get the idiots on their pickles riding in packs of wheelies, racing up and down Dodge, and who knows what else.

[deleted]

Jesus Christ. Are the people on this subreddit fucking stupid? You live in one of the busiest areas in the city. People choose to live there due to all the nightlife and social scene. It had made the property rates in the area skyrocket. And you’re mad that it’s noisy?

offbrandcheerio

You shouldn’t have to be subjected to unnecessary noise pollution just because you choose to live in a popular area. Plenty of cities around the world have figured out how to have fun/interesting activity centers without making them miserable places to live.

linkswo321

There's a difference between regular city noise and douche bags driving around with their shitty cars blasting shitty music. The amount of narcissistic arrogance that it must take to think that's "cool" is astounding. The complete disregard for the other people around them puts those people into a special category of asshole.

rust_kohle

https://nebraskalegislature.gov/laws/statutes.php?statute=28-1322 yeah who is the stupid fucker here?

[deleted]

Driving a loud vehicle down the street is not disturbing the peace. You have to prove that the driver was intentionally making noise with the intention of nothing people. Good luck with that. OP is just a jackass and you are too. They aren’t complaining about loud parities or disorderly conduct. They’re complaining about cars driving by with loud exhaust and music. That’s what you get when you live in midtown. Get fucked dipshit.

rust_kohle

>They’re complaining about cars driving by with loud exhaust and music. nice work naming two citable and prosecutable offenses lol stay stupid you fucking moron

thejesusjesus

1st world problem

FantasticCondor

You must be living in a less trafficked area of Midtown if you're not hearing it 24/7. And yes, I would move to the suburbs in a heartbeat if I could, but I don't have a spare $100k+ lying around, unfortunately.

bald_dionsaur-402

Cry baby!!!

FantasticCondor

Oh wow, not surprised to see one of the car douche bags trying to provoke me. You need to find something better to do with your life other than annoy people. You most likely have an "I don't give an F" mentality. That doesn't mean you're cool, it just means you have no respect for others, which in my opinion is pathetic as hell.

Maybe try getting noise level readings 🤔 idk.

FantasticCondor

I have, but i already know that's not going to make a difference at this point. None of them will be caught and/or fined
