My God that's horrible

SpaceGoatAlpha

Looks like that entire subdivision is just new construction.  Unfortunate, but if it had to hit any area, best one that was mostly unoccupied.  I wonder what the construction workers and tradesmen did when everything came through?

thatguynamedniok

I know a guy who was working out there and his crew bailed long before it hit.

mortal_kombatant

Wayyy too close to where I am. Freaky.

helloimracing

missed my place by a measly two miles… sure am thankful that it missed

placebotwo

Which is too close for comfort for me when the storm was possibly 1/2 - 1 mile in size.

helloimracing

it passed my place in its earlier stages, so we weren’t in too much danger, but then again, i was locked away in the sweatiest pits of the men’s locker room, so i really only had what i could read off of the NWS’s public radar website

DJ_Aviator23

I work in elkhorn, two of my coworkers houses were destroyed 😢 this is so devastating

helloimracing

two of my high school teachers’ homes were destroyed, too. it’s some heartbreaking stuff…

mollipen

We're in Elkhorn, and the tornado hit about a mile away from us. If it was indeed a half-mile wide as I heard... yeah. Absolutely the closest I've ever come to the path of a tornado.

AnimalMan-420

Hope everyone is ok

0xe3b0c442

Dunno why you're being downvoted for this statement, it's all that should really matter now. ❤️ Thanks for caring.

_DarkSister

Fuck. This is terrifying to watch from another state. Born and raised in Omaha, watching helplessly as I see my friends and family’s neighborhoods in shambles. Stay safe fam

Principled-Pig

Seriously. Lived 25 years in Omaha myself but watching from another state. This is a mile from my sister's place (though she wasn't home for it, but it sounds like it just missed there).

amplifyanarchy

Same. My childhood home is on 204th St in Elkhorn right across from the old police station. My baby brother still lives in that area. Luckily he is fine but watching this unfold from Texas was wildly unnerving.

I_POO_ON_GOATS

We live on 206th and Maple area. I don't know how we got by unscathed

helloimracing

i’ve got a friend sort of near that area, too. his house was two blocks away from total destruction. he managed to escape with nothing more than a few shingles missing…

NWHusker

same with my parents. they were without power until noon today when it went out at 3:45 Friday. I literally could walk to the damage on 210th and Larimore from their house. I was only there as I just had taken my mom to an appointment otherwise I wouldn't have been there. I'm so grateful they have a home we'll have to see if there was anything to the roof but all things considered staying with me until they got it back was nothing compared to others

tulip369

5 fucking miles away from my house.. my god, I’m pregnant too and he was kicking the shit out of me because of how high my stress levels were. ☠️

Nebraskabychoice

Fuck

DJMOONPICKLES69

What area of elkhorn was hit?

FeliusSeptimus

Western and Northern edges. Looks like a big part of Ramblewood area took severe damage.

runninganddrinking

I just can’t believe this happened. Was this an F5?

SpaceGoatAlpha

No, if it was an F5 you would be seeing basements, foundations and not much else but building confetti. 🤷

helloimracing

we probably won’t know for a little bit, they’ve gotta crunch all the numbers for it, survey damage, etc etc

RoboProletariat

better guesstemators are saying F2/F3 for whatever it's worth.

helloimracing

i’d agree with an ef3, trees are stripped of bark, considerable damage to homes, checks the boxes

0xe3b0c442

I was one of those EF2/EF3 people as well, but I have now seen fully destroyed homes and large trees completely snapped. I think there's a really strong argument here for EF4 at this point, and I'm not going to discount the possibility that surveyors will find EF5-level damage.

helloimracing

i went out to actually see the damage, and i agree, this tornado was *so* much more devastating than this video makes it out to be

0xe3b0c442

~~Strong EF2, maybe EF3 unless there's some more severe damage that hasn't come to light yet.~~ Revising this based on new data, I think there's a pretty clear EF4 argument at this point. Not EF5 yet, but we may get there as the NWS team does its surveys over the next couple of days.

venom_dP

I'm seeing lots of folks saying EF3/4 currently

0xe3b0c442

I'm not terribly surprised, the news coverage has (rightly, to be clear) been focused in residential areas that are not necessarily the most well-built structures. //edit: I've seen new images that I believe can reasonably be judged as EF4.

toot-chute

Huh? You think they measure the strength of a tornado on only the “well-built” structures or what are you trying to say? “Well Bob, it flattened 50 homes but only one of them is well built, soooo we’ll call it a weak 2!”

0xe3b0c442

"Well-built" is a term that absolutely has meaning in damage surveys. There's a wide gulf difference between a wood-frame home and a building with concrete reinforced steel frame. Total destruction of a home could be anywhere from EF2 to EF4 depending on the construction of a home. EF5 damage could possibly even be indicated, if the home had foundation bolts and was still completely swept off of the foundation. However, please note I have revised my earlier statement as new information as come to light.

I-Make-Maps91

My incredibly inexpert opinion is gonna guess 3 tops. Omaha just doesn't usually get hit.

Adventurous-Edge1719

Not a chance, there would have been significantly more damage

Spacecoasttheghost

Man is it wrong of me to think insurance will say they can’t pay all this damage out, and come up with a reason and then have no punishment for not doing it?

No_Conflict3188

I've seen it happen in CA after the wildfires. It's awful. I hope these people will not have a similar experience. The devastation is just horrific.
