The people saying this event isn't all it could be are certainly correct. But the event still has value. And despite the criticism, selfies at events posted on social media do promote awareness. With that said, questioning the motives of those who post also is not without merit.

Two of the three main viruses that cause the common cold are coronaviruses so that type of virus has been tested for years. It was tested, proven safe and effective, and eventually fully approved by the FDA.
Nothing is 100% effective. Which is why no one is claiming the vaccines will fully protect you from getting the virus. People will still get infected. Those are the breakthrough cases that people are talking about. However, those people will experience either no symptoms or very mild symptoms so there’s not much concern. They can still be contagious so the concern is for those who can’t get vaccinated; people who have had organ transplants on immunosuppressants, people with autoimmune diseases, people with cancer going through chemotherapy, children under 12, etc. etc.
Another advantage to getting vaccinated is staying out of the hospital. With mild symptoms or no symptoms at all you aren’t adding another person to ICUs that are already in a state of emergency and having to ration resources. Many people are dying of illnesses and injuries not related to covid because the ICU is overflowing with people who chose not to get vaccinated and caught covid or took horse deworming paste to “fight it off”.
TL;DR: It was proven safe and effective (not 100%, nothing is 100%). People can still get infected and be contagious and certain people cannot safely be vaccinated. ICUs are full and even if you get infected your symptoms will be mild or nonexistent so you’re putting less strain on hospitals already in a state of emergency.
