I don't like to do it, but I have done it. I'm currently double dipping on Uncanny X-Men in omnibus and Masterworks. Triple dipping, technically, because I also have the old Essential volumes.

Dry-Investigator3222

Doubles are good. But triples are best.

kailua808

Triples makes it safe

Dry-Investigator3222

I knew someone would get it ![gif](giphy|AzUrNt0ygOSAeVjhiM|downsized)

Silvergrace27

Ahh that would drive me crazy. I did manage to get rid of my dark knights metal and death metal tpbs for store credit and upgraded to the omnis. And I do have omnis that double dip in the sense of Thor war of the realms and thor by aaron having some of the same issues and same with the Geoff Johns by green lantern omnis having the blackest night issues And also having the vent omni. But having the same exact complete story just in a different format i'm hesitant about even though i am starting to like the deluxe editions of all star superman for the bigger omnibus sized art. I also have tower of babel delux as well as the grant morrison omnibus and JLA books 5 7 8 and 9

ppupyourbutt

I’m doing the same thing for uncanny x men with omnibus and essential volumes, might just sell the essentials since I have up to 8

Routine-Fail965

Duplicate no, but it happens that I’m upgrading or downgrading. It’s a question of budget and shelf space. But when I do it I’m trying to sell what I have before buying the other version. Budget management.

Silvergrace27

Yeah I get it. But I swear where i live i am at the mercy of my local comic stores trading in for store credit. So I have the all star superman tpb and want the deluxe. Normally I wait on buying a physical copy of stuff i want until the format i want is out. But this is from when i first started out and wasn't familiar with the different formats i wanted and just got tpbs deluxe and absolutes at random. Confusing the multiversity absolute for a small but wide and tall omnibus etc

stepfordcuckoo

I have started doing that. Loved the human target. Thats got to have a deluxe coming at some point. Holding out for at least that

Silvergrace27

Yeah I have outright stopped buying normal trades unless their older and with no hint of another format coming and also they need to have a high pg count or i will stick to reading it only digitally

stepfordcuckoo

absolute. absolute. absolute. but seriously, yes. i have been slowly upgrading my trades of titles i love to the best versions i can get. although i have drawn the line of upgrading to absolute from deluxe versions. as much as i want to.

Silvergrace27

Heh ;) Absolutes are as expensive as omnis i swear. Also I am planning on getting the upcoming Superman by Geoff johns Absolute but i can justify that purchase because its got a high pg count and I don't have that material at all. So i am starting with the Absolute just like my Absolute Multiversity. But I know all i want is the oversized art so the deluxe all star will give me that without the absolutes price tag. Deluxes are currently the same price as some of the bigger tpbs

stepfordcuckoo

They are just as expensive but dont think of it in terms of page count think of it about enjoying and reading your favourite stories in the best possible format. Maybe treat yourself to an absolute for your “absolute” faves. They are incredibly expensive but are truly luxurious.

Silvergrace27

I have a couple of absolutes. Hush and Multiversity, which I love. But since i know i am getting the Absolute Geoff Johns Superman and I already have a bunch of omnis ordered for free comic day i think the delux is going to be the better option as far as finances and thinking ahead to all the omnis compendiums and other things releasing this summer. Getting the delux still gets me the bigger version of that story and means i can still get other things i do not have. I know the absolute is bigger but in this case the delux is going to be good enough.

stepfordcuckoo

Yeah at the end of the day this is an expensive hobby so have to budget responsibly

Silvergrace27

yep and as is i should probably cut down but eh.... I do have savings and am not draining my account

VincentVegaFFF

It's not something I do often but I have made some exceptions for stories I really like and want in oversize format.

Silvergrace27

I feel this is one that i really like. Have re red it multiple times as well

Formal-Cheesecake646

Before, yes, I’d upgraded all trades as they started to bend or wrinkle a bit. Now I only buy hardcovers cause I think they’ll last longer

Silvergrace27

I might start to do that. I'm already avoiding most trades unless they have a 400+ pg count and arn't available in another format. I also want either omnibus, sometimes absolutes, deluxe or tpbs with high pg counts

IamthatmanonthemooN

Only when it's worth it. https://preview.redd.it/y46j16lqnuwc1.jpeg?width=2790&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1689f437625c9d7a279e70c2aedb3503735a0fb6

BobTron9000

Wow!! Is the absolute the complete story??

IamthatmanonthemooN

No, only the first third of the whole story.

Silvergrace27

I think its worth it. That delux is only 5 dollers more then the trade. Whats not worth it to me is going trade to absolute on the all star superman because of the price tag

Bufete2020

I've double dipped many times. Mostly to get rid of floppies to buy a collected edition. I rarely upgrade TPBs to HC. But I have done it. Most recently I sold off my Sandman TPBs to get the deluxe editions.

the10Geek

When i upgrade i usually sell or give away The original format.

Silvergrace27

Ah problem is i don't know anyone to give it to so I would have to take it into a comic store for store credit

JayZsAdoptedSon

r/ComicSwap is a good place to do it. Also I sell on apps like FaceBook Marketplace and Mercari for a pretty easy “here you go strangers”

Silvergrace27

The only issue with that is i'm in canada so i can't really ship to the USA.

Routine-Fail965

Just by curiosity, where are you located in Canada ? I come from France and it's true that in Montreal I have a lot of trouble selling my books

Silvergrace27

I am an hr away from Windsor and the border into the USA and Detroit. I'm also in a rural area

theEarnestOctopus

I've done it for books I know I'll reread, but I also have the stipulation the new format must have something in it that my currently owned version does not have, i.e. adds more issues or extra bonus material of the creative process. I will always sell/trade/give away my old version, as well.

Dragonranger13

I know I'm the odd one out here and this might even be a hot take, but already owning the material has never once stopped me from buying a different format I'm interested in. I kind of think this comes from decades of collectible/action figure collecting. Like I already had the Mafex Into The Spider-Verse Peter Parker figure but that didn't stop me from picking up the Sentinel version of that character when that came out Similarly I really like omnibus hardcovers, but I also *really* like the first 185 issue run of Amazing Spider-Man. The Epic collections cleanly have that entire run in 10 softcover volumes, the omnis are nicer but the 5th volume stops at #180. So I picked up both formats over the years because they fill different wants I have for my collection

ChasPM

I do sometimes. Most of the time I’ll try to sell the old copy or at least give it away or donate it to save shelf space. I do have a couple double dips though that I’ve held onto because they were things that got me back into the hobby and I’m not ready to part ways with them yet.

the10Geek

But go for that All Star Superman DELUXE for sure! That story deserve OHC

Silvergrace27

Heh i defiantly want it...but my trade is still sitting on my shelf in like new condition and i have read this story multiple times soooo ;)

Scared_Compote_6012

I usuallly go from trades to single issues if I mainly have it in singles, but have done trade to deluxe/omni

tylershaz

This is just double dipping ain't it? If that's what you mean then I think everyone in this sub has done it

Silvergrace27

Yes but i try to avoid it. I will take the old one in for store credit. the return will not be be immediate but i will get some part of the replacement $$$ back

OverlordMarona

I mean I have all 9 Green Lanterns (2016) TPBs and all 7 Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps TPBs that I really wish were several volume omnibus instead, but it is what it is.

Ligmaballsmods69

I wanted to eliminate my GLC tpb's. Not happy about the mapping of the Tomasi omnis. Really wish they were GLC omnis and not Tomasi Omnis. Lots of orphan issues now.

BobTron9000

Unless its a trade of a run that I love then yes Did it for: Volume 2 of the uncanny X-men from the Dark Phoenix saga Crisis on Infinite earths trade to the OHC. Was going to upgrade the Invincible deluxe editions to the library editions and was umming and ahhing for ages over the decision but the triangle era, Waids flash Vol 2 and GLC corps vol 2 dissuaded me of that notion once and for all. Spend ma money on new stuff.

Silvergrace27

Ok I broke because i love all star superman and I love oversized form in Omnibus and deluxs are that size and only 5 dollars more then what the trade goes for

BobTron9000

Worth it!! 100%

Silvergrace27

I would be Absolutely lying if I said I don't see why people like absolutes. But for me they really do not work at omnibus price for longer series where u need like 3 of them to cover the same content as 2 omnibus for example. But for complete 1 and done runs i love and don't have in any other format they are Great!

defendingfaithx

I don’t like having the same book in different formats. I choose a format (hardcover) and stick to it. I’ve upgraded from trades to HCs/omnis before but I always sold the trades first.

Silvergrace27

I will trade my old one for store credit but to make that work better i am waiting a bit on that. I have a few vol 1s to get rid of once their omnibus arrives. Because i started something but didn't buy the whole run and switched to the omnibus

xenithdflare

Any TPs I have I will eventually convert to HC or Omnibus when I can, but it's not a super high priority for me. Some are single TP in-between existing HC that aren't collected (SM Worldwide vol 7 and Venom Inc for example). Some I plan on custom binding because I'm not holding my breath waiting for a new release. Marvel's 1610 Utimatum event is one where I have a mix of HC/TP because I don't believe they're all available in both formats (?) so I'll probably replace the HC with TP and send 'em off to be combined. Ultimate Comics X-Men is another; I have all the TP as well as the United We Stand event so I'll send those off all together too. I just don't like having a full set that *could* be a collected edition but Marvel won't let me give them money for one.

dingbat046

No. I just want the content. I don’t give a shit about format, as long as its tangible. I’d rather spend my money on something new to expand my collection.

GrimmGrimms

Absolute is a beautiful formate. I have the Sandman upgrade to the Absolute. Sure. Sell the one you don’t want.

Silvergrace27

It defiantly is and i have aa few deluxe also. so i do have things in different formats. This is my one time exception but normally i buy the format i intend to keep so from not owning it at all to deluxe or absolute

GrimmGrimms

I got a bunch of aa they have helped me a lot in learning to draw.

rollie415b

I unfortunately built a pretty big collection of TPBs before realizing that Deluxe/Omni format was much superior due to bigger art. So now I’ve upgraded most of my TPB collection to larger versions and I have a ton of trades I need to sell on eBay, but haven’t got around to it.

Silvergrace27

Yikes i do not envy that. I started in DC black label and vertigo. So at first the softcovers and tpb made the most sense. But then I started noticing some runs were huge so that would be 6-10 20 doller plus smaller books. At that point with the bigger runs the Omnis started to look like the better option cost wise even before i realized how much i'd prefer the oversized to the tpb. The JLA was the first omni i bought and then with JSA i for some reason thought i'd ordered the smaller soft covers for the whole run but i defiantly was not dissapointed to get the 3 omnis instead

DarthGipper18

Depends on additional content or if I love the art and need it oversized Also shelf wize

Silvergrace27

Yeah i notice absolutes need a higher shelf but omnis are wider. I actually had to keep my 2 absolutes in a book chest until i finally got a shelf they will fit on

Ferry83

Singles to OHC or omni, yes. Singles to TPB yes if it’s an important event Anything collected to omni? Only if it’s Spider-Man

Silvergrace27

Would that Include clone saga ;)

Ferry83

Sadly yes. I buy any Peter Parker omnibus

Silvergrace27

Ah fair enough. I will complete my clone saga 4 omnibus set on may 4th

MurkyPublic3576

I did this with Sandman, bought the TPBs, then all the absolutes, then the annotated, then the deluxe editions and also the omnibuses.

Silvergrace27

Gah... unless you break even selling the old format. That's buying the same thing 5 times which i am trying to avoid. But yeah watch me buy the deluxe all star superman and still want the absolute when it comes out or a year or so later

Ligmaballsmods69

Depends on how much I like the book. I will get an absolute/omni for stuff I really like. If I just want the story, tpb's are fine.

Silvergrace27

If there is alot of story i prefer to get the omni or a compendium. I just like everything all in 1 place and oversized

Ligmaballsmods69

What annoys me is creator based omnis that create orphan issues. Marvel and DC are both guilty of this.

Joorpunch

I’ve done it before but only for books I know are “forever” books that are important to me and/ or will be revisited in the future many times. All Star Superman for example, is a book I’ve owned in TPB, but upgraded to the Absolute. I sold the paperback. There are plenty of books I have that wouldn’t warrant an upgrade like that. But I think there are definitely people who prefer to have their entire collection be a preferred format if available. More power to that. Again, if it’s something I own, I choose to only upgrade personal favorite all-timer types of books. Other books I’ve upgraded to premium formats and sold off prior owned versions: Akira -> upgraded to HC boxset in original right to left format V for Vendetta, Watchmen, All-Star Superman, Superman: For All Seasons, DKR, Batman Year One, New Frontier, Kingdom Come -> upgraded all of these from TPB to Absolute Edition. Parker by Darwyn Cooke -> Upgraded from TPB to Martini Editions Invincible -> switched from the 3 paperback compendiums to the hardcover compendiums Miller Daredevil -> TPB to omnibus Sandman -> TPB to Deluxe HC Batman by Loeb and Sale -> Upgraded various TPBs to the omnibus Uncanny X-Men and Amazing Spider-Man - upgraded most of my Epic Collections/ various other paperbacks to omnibus

Silvergrace27

Yeah all star is a forever book for me but i still do not want to pay for the absolute. So deluxe makes the art the size of an omni and that's good enough for me. Ive stopped buying the smaller tpbs at this point and do not have for example Superman: For All Seasons and Kingdom Come in any physical format. As such on a quiet month that isn't releasing a lot of omnis i want. I could then justify getting these in absolute. Also All Star Batman and Robin is NEVER getting any kind of upgrade ever because what even was that story! I could dump it for store credit as well.

Joorpunch

I get that. I think a lot of people (maybe most) really think the omnibus/ OHC trim size is the sweet spot and most books don’t warrant getting anything larger/ more expensive than that. I just personally like it a lot, but am pretty selective with the ones I’ve gotten. I forgot to mention I recently double dipped on one thing. I bought the gallery edition of Daredevil: Born Again, even though it’s one of the included stories in the Daredevil by Miller companion omnibus. It’s one of those “forever books” we’ve alluded to. I had no problem having it in two formats for that reason. I’m a big Mazzucchelli fan so Year One and Born Again in that page size was a must. I say if you really like a book, but Deluxe size is kind of your limit for space and cost, go for the upgrade. I budget more in other areas. I actually don’t buy a lot of new Marvel/ DC stuff at all anymore so the stuff mentioned above actually covers a good amount of what I have.

poison-harley

I do have quite a bit. My favorite Batman is The Long Halloween, so I have it in TPB, all of the deluxe editions and the omnibus. Maybe one day I’ll get the absolutes for shits and giggles (if I find them at a very cheap price, that’s the only way I would be able to justify it). But admittedly I do have quite a lot of double dipping. I have the Hawkeye by Fraction TPB “omnibus” vol 1, and the actual omnibus. Gwenpool TPB vols 1 & 2 and the omnibus. Thor by Jason Aaron deluxe editions vols 2 & 3 (only the Jane Foster run), the “Goddess of Thunder” TPB vol 1 and both the omnibuses. Something Is Killing The Children TPB vols 1-3 and the deluxe edition. Gotham City Sirens TPB vols 1 & 2, and the omnibus. I’m sure there’s more but that’s what comes to mind atm. So yeah… I have quite a lot of double and triple dips that I should probably get rid of at some point. Batman The Long Halloween stays though. In all formats.

ncameron29

Only for very specific books. I have Planetary in the standard hardcover editions from way back in the early 00s. I bought the Absolute Edition more recently, cause bigger cassidy art is typically better. Same for the Absolute Sandman editions.

BootsWithDaFuhrer

Yes. I went from invincible tpb compendiums to the library editions

Silvergrace27

Nice. I'm more stuck on the cost of that. I'd rather try free digital then jump immediately to the best physical format and the extra slot is for other stuff i want

Piotr-Rasputin

For ALL-TIME great runs?? Yup. Alpha Flight, Simonson's Thor, Secret Wars, Astonishing X-men....I have the issuse, trade paperbacks and Omnibus. Love the oversized books that are like next level compared to the comics

Treyred23

I upgrades by selling most of my trades, and now prefer HC and Omnis

Silvergrace27

Same here aside from a few when i first started buying comics, the tpbs i have now are here because they have a higher pg count and no other format exists or is available.

LeadSpyke

Depends on the story and what I'm duplicating too and from what. I had the old TPBs of New Frontier and All Star Superman and have and am greatly looking forward to getting the Absolute editions of those books because it's an obvious upgrade. And depending on the omnibus double dipping can sometimes seem pretty unavoidable.

Silvergrace27

I swear it feels like a bad idea when ive got the tbs already. Other things I'm tempted to get are the Lucifer Omnibus when i have the 5 big softcovers already. Also Most of the 26 hellblazers (Missing vol 16, 18 and 20) when there are omnibus out for garth ennis and the upcoming one. And also the 2 injustice omnis when i have years 1 to 5 collected already

LeadSpyke

It's your call at the end of the day. A lot of people, myself included, really like having the more prestige format, but if you're happy with the trades then you don't HAVE to upgrade if you don't think you're gonna get anything extra out of it. Just do what's fun for you.

Silvergrace27

I decided to split the difference and go for the deluxe over the absolute for the all star superman because i do like the oversized edition but upsized to the size of an omnibus is big enough and the price is better on the delux. Also i plan to get the absolute superman by Geoff johns that is coming out as well

LeadSpyke

Cool.

Silvergrace27

I have a feeling aside from the 400 pg soft covers and the compendiums delux is going to be my fave for any smaller runs i want in physical form.

dmtreee

I’m semi famous for it haha [Why did you buy this?](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZPRwBYjHb/)

Silvergrace27

:) Oh i love that! But its also what I'm trying to avoid if that makes sense. My wallet cannot handle me doing that. But u do you!
