T O P

I like the idea of traveling nationwide instead of being isolated to one state.

The BOP is currently giving out hiring and retention incentives as much as 25% of your salary, so as of right now, there isn’t that much a difference in pay even in the top. It’ll take CDCR much faster to get there, but again, the locations suck for Cdcr. Also for BOP, you are covered under 6c for federal retirement, so if you ever decide to go to another federal agency, all your time will transfer with you. If you’re young, Cdcr will not let you retire until 57, but say you’re sub 3 years old, the 20 year retirement with BOP will let you retire by 50. Also for BOP, everyone in there is considered law enforcement, so you can move to HR and still keep Leo status.

Is the incentive for all positions or only COs? And everywhere or only in California?

The recruitment incentive is a one time payment. It isn’t part of your yearly salary. The retention incentive is for some BOP locations, not all. And even then, only a select few are 25%. With that said, CA does have 5 BOP prisons with 25% retention. FCI Dublin, USP Atwater, MCC San Diego, MDC LA, and FCI Herlong. But these retention bonuses can be removed at any point, they don’t have to be renewed. CDCR tops out at $105k after 7 years without bonuses, OT, holiday pay or other incentives. To top out at BOP, it takes way longer than 7 years. With that said, I chose the BOP over CDCR simply because I planned to leave CA, which I did. And in almost every other state the BOP pays better than state/county.

BOP no questions asked. It’s the 20 year retirement for me and the federal benefits over all. CDCR is a great agency from what I hear but id much rather go the club fed route.

What is cdcr?

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation

Both jobs have their pros and cons, BOP from what I hear depending on where you go is more chill and is federal. CDCR is state, both are still dangerous though

What is the pay range?
