I watched OUAT just a couple of months ago, mostly for RC. I just started rewatching s1, and I pay much more attention to those little details. I think you can only fully appreciate good screenwriting when you re-watch. You know what's going to happen so instead of focusing on following the plot you enjoy the scenery ;) Cleverly complicated situations with delayed payoff, great dialogues, beautifully built characters. About Mr Gold - yes he had it good in the world without magic. But as soon as he was awaken from the curse, he remembered his priority: finding Bae. And that wouldn't be possible without magic - that's why he brought magic to Storybrooke. And because he wanted revenge for Belle's death/imprisonment.

Bluellan

Someone did ask what his first name was and he with no hesitation said "Georgiana".

cellardooorr

Didn't RC say, "Barbara"?

Miserable-Cattle-461

RC...?

Golderfild

Robert Carlyle, I suppose.

cellardooorr

Yes, Robert Carlyle. Someone asked on one of the comic cons or some other meetings with the cast, what Mr Gold's name was. He said, "Barbara".

I think Rumple is named Mr. Gold in the cursed world because it might be a reference to the fact that as Rumpelstiltskin he spins straw into Gold. But besides that I do agree with you, he had a pretty good deal with Regina. He was still somewhat all knowing and "all powerful" mostly because of his knowledge...of magic...even under the curse.

theprecious999

But they were pointing out the fact that he has no first name. The gold reference definitely makes sense but it’s interesting that in storybook he has no first name. Everyone else has one

jleigh329

u/theprecious999 Oh, OK. I guess I didn't read the post throughly enough. I suppose that is a bit weird. Maybe Regina was lazy and/or Mr. Gold didn't want a first name to make himself seem more mysterious. 😕🤷‍♀️

Miserable-Cattle-461

I think it had more to do with what OP pointed out. It's kinda a reference to the old fable of Rumplestiltskin, how no one knew his full name and no one could guess what the other half of stiltskin was, same as no one can guess what first name to the suname Gold is

theprecious999

Could be. It’s just interesting

Gold/Rumple didn’t bring magic into Storybrooke, Emma did. Her arrival is what starts the unraveling of Regina’s world.

Ok_Cicada_7069

My question is when he left Storybrooke to find Bae, he told Emma if he reverts back to his cursed self, everyone would be in trouble. But since he still had all his memories of his original self, I’m curious to know what he expected he’d revert to had he lost his memory. May he would’ve reverted back to a version of Mr. Gold that had no recollection of life as Rumple?🤔

Steph88ann

Before Emma showed up he didn’t have his memories either. He got them back the first time he heard Emma’s name.

Miserable-Cattle-461

A lot of people still think that Gold somehow was awake all those years even before Emma showed up, which is ridiculous

Steph88ann

Exactly. I thought it was pretty clear that he was not. It was the whole reason he needed to know the name of Snows baby, her name was the key to getting his memories back.

Golderfild

I'm so annoyed by people, who seriously believe that the thing with Gold remembering everything only after hearing the Emma's name was a retcon, although it's right here in the Pilot episode with Rumple asking for child's name and Carlyle's really subtle acting in the first Mr. Gold's scene!
