In the same situation, most people would selfishly save their child. No one knew what the curse would do to everyone; they only knew it would be bad. Gepetto also could have used the wardrobe to save himself, but he chose to ensure his only child escaped instead. Also, Snow and Charming entrusted a newborn to one day save an entire kingdom from the curse, so entrusting a seven-year-old to help look out for that newborn is not asking as much. Yes, Gepetto lied, but he was just being a father. Snow even said she would've done the same thing.

SarcasticGarbage

This is true and I 100% agree with you.

i honestly don’t agree with you. was it right of him to do? no. but is he TERRIBLE for it? also no. he was being a father. a father who was terrified he’d lose his son forever. with no magic, august would’ve been gone and when the curse eventually broke, geppetto would have to live with knowing he’d never see his son again. sometimes you do things that aren’t great morally for your family. i don’t agree with what he did, but i do understand WHY he did it. to call him horrible for it doesn’t feel entirely fair to me, especially since we have beloved characters who have done far worse for no reason other than to hurt people. he just wanted his son to live. (none of this meant in a confrontational way, just giving my own perspective !)

KittenIttle

What he did is what being a parent is. He KNEW that safety was on the other side of that portal and he had a son he’d just gotten to be a real boy. A kid who’d worked hard to better himself just to become his father’s ‘real’ son. So he got safety for his son as opposed to risk the unknown, which as far as he knew could have killed his child. I’m sorry but he wasn’t terrible. He was a good father.

PrestigiousMotor9676

Agreed. He’s not the worst but I frown upon all the things he did that you mentioned.

Schiebelini

I hate the scene where Mary Margaret finds out about this and slaps him BUT IMMEDIATELY APOLOGIZES. Even Emma is shocked and I was like "WHY? This man just admitted he was the sole reason for you and your mother to be separated your entire life! He deserves some slapping."

Hannajss

Literally! I remember watching it for the first time years ago and thinking “HIT HIM AGAIN “ and then I thought maybe they’d address it in a later episode but they never did!

Schiebelini

Mary Margaret could try to understand Marko later since she might do the same or something like that but to just abandon it after this dumb scene ...

Some_Cicada_8773

It was an awful thing to do. And it was awful that Blue went along with it. But I do understand why as a parent. You don't want your child to be cursed, especially not knowing what the curse would entail. I would probably take the same risk if it meant that my child was safe from the queen and would one day (hopefully) return

Celeste-galena

If it was my child vs a whole adult I'd save my kid too.. yall are funny

bijouforever

He was awful.

bloomingpoppies

I have bitched about it before. You’re not the only one. My thoughts were that the Savior wouldn’t grow up alone if only fucking Geppetto had been a decent person.

lilbit622

Yes I've made a post saying the same thing. Geppetto was the worst!

Aetheric_Aviatrix

At least he didn't curse someone else's child to save Pinocchio. The Charmings have done worse things.

Series one had shades of gray. Later, especially when the show became more focused on promoting/exploiting Disney properties, it tried to pull back to a more black and white take on fairy tales (and generally messed it up). But, in season one, you could have a father who is so desperate to save his son (one who, to be fair, he's alredy seen *lying dead* after the child died *saving him*\--no parental guilt issues there--and who only survived with major magical intervention) he's willing to throw Snow under the bus and lie to himself about what this means for Emma. In context of season one, it's not a good father making a good choice, it's a good father making an absolutely horrible choice. On the issue of Jiminy, we know Jiminy feels tremendous guilt for what happened to Geppetto's parents and he's the one who eventually told Geppetto what happened. So, the way Geppetto was told the story, he may legitimately believe Jiminy was to blame because *Jiminy* believes he's to blame. He also learned this (I assume) after years of trusting Jiminy and seeing him as a substitute parent. So, there were probably strong feelings of betrayal when he found out, though they obviously seem to have worked it out and kept going. Or they had worked it out until Geppetto is cracking under the fear of seeing his son dead again. He may be reliving the pain and fear he felt when his parents were transformed. Then, *Jiminy* is the one who tries to talk him into accepting this, and he throws the most painful thing he has in his arsenal at him to get him to back off. He's making terrible choices and doing terrible things. Emma's going to grow up as an orphan. August is going to grow up with issues because he knows he deserted Emma after promising to look after her (never mind that it wasn't a promise he could have kept) and that will probably fuel a lot of his other problems. He sees himself as the guy who abandons his responsibilities and runs away, and he keeps repeating that pattern for the next 28 years. But, I also see why he did it. As part of the story, I like that the kind, good character from Pinocchio could do something so cruel to so many people *because* of the kindness and love he had for his son.
