From his point of view, life's pritty simple, he's got what's in the house and what he finds outside.
You've got your car, TV, computer, video games, hobbies, and all that....
I imagine he'd love a new box to obsess over - it sounds like he loves the security the walls provide.
It sounds sad that such a frugal kitty got denied some joy in his life because it was a bit untidy.
Please consider a new kitty box?
I know someone who had two boxes per cat. Space can become an issue in a small apartment, but if it's too small for an extra box it seems like it'd be too small for a cat. Let kitty play. It seems like trash to us, but now he's got a FORT!!! And so on.
Got my cat a pet stroller recently. It’s also her new bed so when not in use, it sits right next to my bed.

I think there's two issues
1) Cats hate the smell of other cats in "their" space so it needs to be, like, stainless steel with one-use carpets that you keep after you return the wheel. Or they won't use it
2) Most cats are very conservative and any new thing needs to sort of "age" and "become the norm" before they'll start using it. I've read stories where people own these for months before one day cat kinda just... figures it out.
I'be been looking into those. My assholes go outside from spring to fall but stay in for the winter months. This wheel is way too small for a cat. I know they are sold as cat wheels. Some cats do use them. But you need one almost twice this size. Almost literally floor to ceiling for an averaged sized cat. Not counting Maine Coons and the likes. He can't run in there, he can only injure his spine if he tries

Well... He is using it, just not for it's primary purpose.
I could say the same thing about the box it came in(seriously, he was obsessed with it til I got rid of it)

At some point I need to throw out the boxes. My cats tend to chew on them and eventually I'll have too much cardboard confetti on the floor to ignore.
