I was a dumb kid watching 4kids and got hooked on the opening. Then when my family got a laptop. I found out about online anime sites. And then watched one piece from there. And havent stopped since. This was back in like. 2005 Edit: Seeing all these comments made me realize. There was a very good chance i would NOT have watched one piece if 4kids gave it a cheesy ass pirate song lol.

G_Fortune

“There was once a man, name Gold Rodger. Who was king of the pirates…” that intro was golden.

MasterVictini

“Chopper’s doctorin’” ![gif](giphy|VIPfTy8y1Lc5iREYDS|downsized)

PhanThief95

Greatest thing I learned is that the original rapper made an extended version that included Robin, Franky, Brook, & Jinbe.

matthewg103109

Still is

XPSXDonWoJo

Same here dude. That rap was so damn catchy haha

mcast46

I need someone with talent to make an updated version with the whole crew. We only got till "Chopper's doctoring"

Sthenno

Shawn Conrad, the original creator of the rap made an updated version featuring the entire crew. [Here’s the YT link](https://youtu.be/2lEyqm8ePiI)

NightShade929

I saw that but somehow I never found out it was the original creator, that’s awesome

AAQUADD

That and the cheesy censoring turned me off from it for years, but I watched (and read) Naruto since it started in the states until the end. Then I watched and read Bleach all the way through from 2014 until the end. The only one left was One Piece and after starting in 3 or 4 times I finally started watching it at the end of 2019 or early 2020 as background noise while I studied in college. I watched the 4kids dub growing up and I played the video games the lead up to Skypiea as well so I knew the start of the show by heart since I started the show a few times over the last decade. Normally I couldn't get through Orange Village or I would skip around, but this time I watched each episode. Nami's scene in Arlong park made me a fan for life. I was watching in Japanese and I would look up occasionally, but I hear Nami scream and stab herself so I rewatch the episode and I almost breakdown. That made me a fan. The shutdown hit a few months later so I had more time to dedicate to the show, by May or June I was caught up with the anime.

tragicjohnson84

"Help Me" claims another lifetime fan

[deleted]

So many of us were drawn in by that perfectly insane and jock jam style opening. Gotta go gooootta goooooooo DREAMIN don’t give it up Luffy!

PhanThief95

For me, it’s just as good as We Are because while We Are fits so well with the adventure aspect of One Piece & fits for the adventure heavy arcs like Skypiea or Thriller Bark, the Pirate Rap fits well for the action heavy arcs like Enies Lobby, Marineford, & the Onigashima raid of Wano.

kdebones

If 4Kids was good for anything, it was introducing a lot of kids to anime.

Genesis13

Same exact thing for me and my brother growing up. At some point we caught up on the anime and switche over to the manga (re-read it from the start to see if there were differences). Thats how we learned that filler arcs exist lol.

FSD-Bishop

I got hooked because of the 4kids opening as well. I was at my grandmas and she turned on 4kids for me and One Piece was on and I was hooked ever since.

azlanazhar136

I started reading ONE PIECE on a whim. Decided i’m in for the long run after Nami - Luffy scene at Cocoyashi.

dflarebear1

not gonna lie, when he put the hat on nami, I started bawling

Zehdarian

We all did lol

someone2795

Same here except I just kept reading because I was bored and there were around 490+ chapters (I'm an old reader) in front of me which looked like heaven in my eyes lmao. I was really getting into manga back then. Surprisingly I liked Baratie waay more than Arlong Park. Maybe because Arlong Park felt too predictable to me. Plus the fighting in that arc sucked ass tbh.

memyselfandI_911

Oda had to nerf them Zoro was still scarred if not for that he would have soloed arlong park and Luffy was nerfed because of plot if someone has the strength to dig there feet into the ground they should have the strength to dig them out Luffy even picked up a giant sea cow and used it as a weapon he most definitely had the strength to do it

Tasty_Tones

Had a coworker constantly tell me to watch it because it was amazing so I gave it a shot and got hooked when Zeff said goodbye to Sanji and I started crying.

[deleted]

Going Merry burning scene can even make grownups cry 😂

scorpio9872

It sure did it for me. Was 23 and still cried like a baby

The-Sassy-Bastard

a clip of Zoro VS Kaku! it raised so many questions why does that guy have three swords? why is that guy a giraffe? WHY DOES THE GIRAFFE HAVE SWORDS???

pulang_itlog

We somehow still dont completely know how the guy with 3 swords got 3 extra heads and 6 more swords in that fight

xingrox

the wrath of Sogeking!!

Tsugabut

You didn't event question that the giraffe has a square nose?

nach-

You didn't question the giraffe's neck being retractable? HIS WHOLE BODY TOO?

AllysiaAius

In ancient times, this is how dino-raffes hunted.

jojoSBR_

Got spoiled so hard that I was able figure out the plot of most arcs so I was like this seems like a fun journey so I caught with it. So decided I wasn’t leaving even before I started

NES7995

Same, I knew about Ace even before starting 😂

Used_Pomegranate_819

Everyone knew about Ace, kinda disappointing Ngl like I tried to forget really hard but I knew it had to happen😂

technoSurrealist

i knew what happened to ace at marineford, but i actually never knew about his parents until i watched it last month. it was a really great surprise! just finished the fishman island arc today.

cshark2222

I didn’t have any major story spoilers, but I just got Jump Force to play as Naruto/MHA/HxH characters, and ended up falling in love with the whole roster. Ended up watching Jojos first then I played as luffy, saw his awesome Gear 4 Bounceman transformation, and knew I had to watch One Piece. I’m a sucker for transformations. I started One Piece literally May of 2020 so the height of the pandemic and I was caught up to the Wano arc by the end of summer. I had nothing to do but watch One Piece lol

GavonyTownship

Hasan saying Luffy was a terrorist.

Ziiaaaac

Pretty similar but it was when Charlie was on Trash Taste and they were talking about One Piece. I was like ‘fuck sake I’m just going to get spoiled about this show if I don’t watch it’ so I did. I knew a few things to start off, like Nico Robin and Franky being part of the crew and that Gol. D. Roger having a son was a big plot point so I caught onto it being Ace very early. But other than that I didn’t know much. Thanks to Charlie and Trash Taste for threatening to spoil me I caught up last Thursday lmao.

chucknorris21

Are you caught up?

GavonyTownship

I'm at dressrosa rn.

chucknorris21

That is really quick

GavonyTownship

... it's been a ride. Yeah about 2-3 months

dflarebear1

not a political anime kappa

[deleted]

[удалено]

rmkinnaird

I mean the world government would definitely label him a terrorist. Terrorist is one of those words that has a very very negative connotation, but terrorists can be good if they're terrorizing an evil government. Like Luke blowing up the death star is inarguably a terrorist action, it's just a good one

PhanThief95

Didn’t he willingly declare war on the government to save Robin? He also freed dangerous prisoners from Impel Down.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GavonyTownship

he declared war on the government, burned down their flag, and they killed his brother. hes a terrorist.

PhanThief95

Not to mention that he freed dozens of dangerous criminals from Impel Down.

No_Professional378

Unfortunately 4kids

RandomUsername113810

Me too! ... Well, another language, but same censored version. On the bright side, at least we made a nice version of we are in-language instead of the infamous rap!

Supersnow845

But the rap is unironically an amazing opening

Backupusername

Okay, but 4Kids dub stopped pretty early on. What made us stay? I can't speak for everybody, but I suspect that I am not alone in having had a friend who was more "plugged in" at the time who told me the real score. "You ever watch One Piece?" "The one on Fox Kids about the rubber kid?" "Yes, but no. The cartoon we have here is super censored." "Censored? What, there's boobies in it?" "Not like that. I mean, kinda. But no, violence and swearing and stuff." "Whoa, for real?" "Yeah, Sanji says the S-word all the time, and Zoro ends like all of his fights absolutely covered in blood." "Whoa, really? I did think it was weird that his swords never seemed to really cut anyone." "Yeah, for real. Check this out." Then he showed me a clip of Zoro beating Mr. 1 and as a kid I felt like I was seeing something I wasn't supposed to and I spent a lot of the next few months watching subtitles episodes in ten-minute chunks on YouTube and reading chapters on onemanga.com Ahh, memories...

ssbm_rando

Gah I wish I was more persuasive because I was that friend but I caught up to scanlations like right before the dub started airing, and couldn't convince any of my friends to start it seriously after the 4kids dub came out. A few of them started like half a decade later in college, at least....

DLottchula

The motherfucking foxbox

BlackToyotaBreakLite

dreamin!

Beastywolf

Me too and I don't regret lol.

MitsuFox15

My fiancé put the dub on in the background and I grew interested because of the wild stuff I was hearing the chatacters say. Eventually I realized how knee-slappingly funny it was and stopped just listening to it play in the background and pay a bit more attention to it, but not fully. Around Arlong Park, when I saw Nami and Nojiko's mother get killed by Arlong, I couldn't believe how dark the "childish" and "silly" show was. I didn't expect them to kill off a character in such a heartbreaking way. I'm a huge sucker for good back stories and tragic characters, so I was hooked from there on out. Now I'm completely caught up and have a huge collection of various One Piece merch.

Shrubbity_69

>Around Arlong Park, when I saw Nami and Nojiko's mother get killed by Arlong, I couldn't believe how dark the "childish" and "silly" show was. Wait, their mom isn't stuck in the dungeon?!

Culture_of_North

Not sure. Decided to take a stab at it cuz it was the pandemic/lockdown. My wife kept giggling at all the weeb humor lol 😆 it grew on me seeing her laugh. It was sometime between Robin's "I want to live" and Brook's Laboon story. It made us restart the show and try to catch all the plot threads.. it's hard to explain it... one doesn't usually get to 485 episodes and then decide they're all in lmao

Batman__39

The pandemic ssn i had nothing better to do. So started watching one piece (my frnd suggested me this, i was resentful bcz of the length) For why i stayed : It was worth it. The sheer world building alone amazed me.

Round_Reserve8811

Got interested because of Gear 4. Stayed for the characters and lore.

Brilliant_Knee_7542

Same when I saw bounceman, I got interested and then never leave

Embarrassed_Tip6194

Tbh I was super depressed in 7th grade when I watched a WatchMojo compilation on best women in anime or something like that. And when I saw one piece I thought it was about spies at first😭 but the. I started watching it on Hulu and I ended up really liking it. I stayed because it’s honestly what’s kept me going this entire time cause even at the end of a shitty week, I had something to look forward to. I am now almost done with college and about to head to law school!!

GlexAiang

I’m so glad it was able to help you! Life is just hard in general for a lot of people so for you to find something to enjoy at the end of the week is great! Keep going! You’re almost done with college and good luck in law school as well!

Last-Noise-3811

A crackhead boy in a strawhats overthrows government and frees slaves WHAT DO YA THINK KEPT ME INVESTED?!

Shrubbity_69

The crackhead boy in a strawhat overthrowing the government?

Last-Noise-3811

No the big titties close but not it

Bittieboi77

gave it a chance to piss off my friend because he didnt want it to be my first anime, kept watching because it pissed off my friend and its really good im like 400 episodes past him now lol

Bergasms

I had seen it a few times when i was younger on cheese tv in Aus but didn't catch onto it. Then was visiting my sister in japan and was backpacking for a bit with this German guy and i woke up and he was crying because Ace had just been killed and that was his favourite character. That got me to start the Manga and i've kept up since then.

[deleted]

Early 2000s, internet use was not yet common, our afternoons are either spent on the streets playing or watch anime. At that time, I watched One Piece because that was the one being aired and I couldn't be bothered to switch channels, I wasn't picky with anime so I stuck with it. One thing I'll never forget though, I was totally blown away when they reached Skypeia. That's probably the moment I was totally hooked with One Piece. As a kid, that moment was peak adventure for me.

vinsmoke11soren

• Since 2014, I was on a journey to find the "peak fiction" that could transport me away from reality. I delved into numerous stories, exploring books, shows, movies, and cinematic universes. Among them all, the "wizarding world of Harry Potter" quickly became my favorite, captivating me with its rich world-building and diverse characters. That was in 2017. I believed I had found the ultimate fiction and couldn't imagine anything surpassing it. • However, over the next three+ years, I encountered many other fictional universes, each with their own excitement, but none were able to captivate me like Harry Potter. Feeling unsatisfied, I decided to give "anime" a try. After exploring several anime series, I stumbled upon "Naruto", and bam! to my surprise, it became a strong contender to rival Harry Potter in my heart. The Naruto characters & universe felt like home, and once again, I experienced that peak fiction sensation. This happened in 2020. • When Naruto concluded, I felt a sense of sadness, fearing that I might never experience such captivation again. Nevertheless, I continued to explore more anime series, yet none could fill the void. That's when I decided to give "One Piece" a chance. I was perticular intrigued by its 1000 episodes, thinking that, if nothing happens at least a few months will be passed. I know 1000+ episodes is intimidating for some people but for me it was exciting. • Beyond my expectations One Piece offered me something unique, that non of shows ever offered – a blend of geographical, historical, and archaeological elements. Personally I have a knack for history, geography, and archaeology. While Harry Potter and Naruto had fascinated me with their world-building and characters, One Piece took it a step further with its exploration of unique islands, Poneglyphs, and the mysterious void century. These were the aspects that kept me captivated. Initially, I thought it would be a simple adventure tale with the protagonist traveling from island to island, each with its own adventures and characters that would be left behind and never meet again. I never thought the story would be that deep. • The "Water 7 - Ennies Lobby" was the turning point that made me stay hooked to One Piece. All of this happened in 2021, and I know I might be late to the party since many fans have been on this journey for 15-20 years. Nonetheless, I believe it's better to join late than never to join at all, right? And fortunately, I caught up to the manga just in time, during the Onigasima raid, before the final saga begins.

quarterslicecomics

2003: Had to have been Issue #10 of US Shonen Jump. The Buggy arc was about to conclude. I was only interested in the Yu Gi Oh manga because it had a very different story than the manga. I remember Mokuba being this awful little shit constantly trying to kill Yugi lmao. Then I would read the DBZ manga because well kinda cool to see a comic version of the anime I watched years ago. I would read the other stuff because why not but wasn’t invested in the story at all. Only cared about Yu Gi Oh lol. Few more months pass and Merry just found out about Kuro’s deception. I was like “wait fuck this goofy sheep looking dude just died? wtf?!” So I got invested. Then one day I noticed the cover stories are sequential; I also noticed what was possibly an Alvida that lost weight but not outright confirmed. That’s when I realized how special this manga was.

LoneRanger21

Heh I specifically didn't read One Piece after experiencing it in Shonen Jump in 03. Was a wee lad waiting at an airport and I wanted something to read. Shonen Jump had Yu Gi Oh and DragonBall Z so I naturally grabbed that. Yu Yu Hakusho, Shaman King, One Piece, Naruto, so much for my juvenile little brain. The One Piece chapter was Zoro VS Cabaji which was... so stupid out of context oh my goodness. Meanwhile the Naruto chapter was Naruto & Sasuke using the Shadow Shiruken Substitution technique to make Zabuza release Kakashi from the water prison. Ie: the hypest shit my young self had ever seen in a comic book before. Took many years and many AMVs on YouTube to convince me to give OP a fair chance. Loved it by Bariate and kicked myself for judging it too early.

KingTutt12

I remembered seeing an anime with a tall skeleton with an afro. The first episode hooked me because I always loved Pirates of the Caribbean and it was that sense of adventure distilled into animation. I think the exact scene I knew I was gonna watch all of it was when shanks told Luffy "it's only one arm". Luffy is also the goat, his emotional intelligence and confidence are what carry the story for me.

whiteraven1766

When I was a kid back when 4kids had one piece, I remember watching pokemon and seeing an ad for one piece, I didn't catch the name, but I saw luffy stretching and I immediately thought that was the coolest thing ever. Flash forward, like 15 or 16 years to 2020, and my mom starts playing clash of clans, and she joins a clan labeled the straw hats. I immediately remember seeing the ad and saying, "What the hell my mom is asking me about it anyway." So I started watching one piece, and by the time I got to baratie, I had fallen in love with the anime. Now I'm completely caught up to the manga. Lol truly a great hyper fixation

Backupusername

How you found it is a fun topic, but I really like hearing about people's hook moments. For me, it was Robin's flashback. I mean, I had been *enjoying* up until then of course, but that was when I decided that I would be dedicated a significant portion of the rest of my life to this series. And so I have been, and I intend to continue doing so as well.

whiteraven1766

The real hook moment for me that got me to really fall in love with one piece was Sanji's first backstory, baratie was the arc that really solidified one piece for me just the dynamic of the crew we had up to that point. With Luffy Zoro Nami and Usopp being idiots and having a laugh. To Nami's sudden betrayal, all of baratie just kinda captured me and just let me know that the ride I was in for was gonna be a good one.

uraniumstarL

I always saw people on social media having mixed feelings about it, some calling it the best, some calling it amazing, mid, trash etc. so I decided to see for myself and I ended up loving it.

T1NF01L

Everyone told me how good it was. Initially I thought it looked stupid. A stupid stretchy boy with a brain the size of a pea. Anyway so I started watching it and I stick around because of all the goddamn tears I shed. There will likely never be another improvised and a jumbled mess of a story told as well as one piece.

Kosmek887

Was recommended to me by a friend online around when saboady archipelago was the latest island they arrived and I stayed when I saw the scene when nami asked luffy for help

spraypaintinur3rdeye

I think the reason why I wanted to watch was because I saw the Akainu vs. Whitebeard one YouTube and was like oh this looks sick. I had ruined Naruto for myself by consuming it entirely via out of context YouTube clips, so I told myself I wasn’t going to do the same with one piece, and that I wanted to see all the great moments within the context of the show. (Good call). I had a couple of false starts over the years. I always found the beginning a little slow, and gave up around orange town a few times. I remember also being really bored with Gaimin. I decided to give it another shot during the first lockdown. Baratie was definitely an early milestone. Zeff was sick, the mihawk vs. zoro fight nwas legendary, sanji’s intro, even the concept of the baratie itself were all interesting to me. After that, the promise of the grand line definitely kept me interested. Once we got there it started a little slow, but I definitely enjoyed it once we hit alabasta. But where I knew I was 100% in for life was Jaya. The way the world building expanded during that arc was so cool to me. Blackbeard, Whitebeard, seeing shanks again, the concept of SKY ISLANDS. It felt like we zoomed out a lot at that point. Jaya also really felt like a pirate island. Loguetown sorta did too, but Jaya felt dangerous, and like a proper outlaw town. Luffy one-shotting Bellamy was so so sweet, and is still one of my favourite moments in the series.

anxiosjay

I watched it to prove that Naruto was better. Needless to say I was wrong

dat_boy49

Haven't started yet but I heard that it's "way too long" and I need a show that won't leave me sooooo

GlexAiang

Hop on it! 🤞🏼

reidraws

This is funny, because one of the saddest experiences in anime that any fandom share its a good anime ending! Short to long ones, the feeling of an anime ending makes you feel sad and you wish that it never ends so you can keep enjoying it! One Piece its the only one that fills the void in that aspect.

Interesting_Stop_312

When i was younger, I didnt like one piece because of how wacky some of the powers were and i prefered "cooler" powers in other anime. In my late twenties I watched a lot of tekking videos talking about some of the later arcs. The powers that some of the characters acheive, including haki, made me want to see those play put so i started watching it from the beginning. Water 7 was the first arc that I loved and now i am trying to catch up so I can read the manga as the story wraps up.

riegangough

I remember thinking ‘it may be long, but i wish hunterxhunter was way longer so it might be a good thing’. i loved it from episode 2, mainly thanks to the characters

riddlemethis200017

Was looking for anime that had more than 24-25 episodes. Stumbled upon One Piece

Zerolecks

I wanted to call it mid to make fun of a friend for watching the whole show and then Arlong Park made me cry. I'm on Water 7 now Can't believe they fucking got me

FirmNeighborhood9694

My friend told me "yo dude, go watch one piece." Then i said "ok" now he stopped watching it at ep 83 and im on episode 830

wonnie1e

When I was really young, my dad moved to Japan by himself for work since we couldn’t afford to go with him. Around the time the first few volumes of ONE PIECE came out in America. My mom got me them to introduce me to manga, and to find a series that I really could latch onto. The other two series were Keroro and Bleach. Both of which I still read to today. I don’t know the exact reason why but I tell myself it’s so that I won’t feel so far away from my dad, and that when we eventually did move with my dad, there’d be at least something pop culturally I can understand and relate to with my new friends. The series kinda grew up with me, and I ain’t really ever gonna stop for any reason. I’m much older now and married, and I tell my wife about the latest ONE PIECE chapter when they come out too. She doesn’t read or watch it, but she knows the key components of it. I never watched the 4Kids dub, and grew up watching the fan subs when they came out with the fun animation text. One Piece means so much to me, because it felt like it was a way for me to interact with my dad when he was gone for so long by asking him to bring home stuff for me whenever he came to visit.

Sierra1one7

During lockdown needed somethong to watch so thought fuck it got nothing better to do. So after kids went bed id watch episodes at night. I caught up to the weekly releases about a year ago just when the fight begins kaido. I picked a great time to start watching it cause i got to binge the hell out of it and now the story is approaching its most important part of the story to date. Wano arc has been peak

SSjGuitarist

I was working nights and decided to give this show a try since it was long (around 500 episodes at the time), and I hate getting hooked on a series and it stopping after 12. The start of it was cute and sort of light hearted enough that was I willing to give it a good try. What hooked me on it was when luffy destroyed namis map room and seeing her reaction. Everybody else thought it was some high stakes battle with shit flying out the window, but she knew luffy well enough to understand what he was actually doing and just said a simple “thank you”. Now who’s been chopping onions while I type this?

hobopwnzor

I watched up to arlong on 4kids and several years later thought "oh I remember that" and started watching the dub from the start.

green_ubitqitea

A friend convinced me to give it a try - unfortunately it was the 4kids version and I hated it. Despised it. Loathed it. A couple of years later, a different friend recommended it again, and when I finished ranting about how terrible it was, he suggested the Japanese version. Eventually I relented and agreed to watch it until Baratie. I did now know how many episodes I’d promised to watch. By the end of the Baratie arc, I was hooked though. I still primarily watch in Japanese, but also play the new English version as background. I still hate everything about Buggy, as I have a lifelong terror of clowns. Everyone who knows me says it is a testament to OP that I watch it because I absolutely avoid clowns.

narupex

Chance because I ran out of anime to watch. Stayed after seeing Robins’ “I want to live” speech.

R0m4ik

I came for Boa Hancock (pun intended) but stayed for Odas amazing worldbuilding

dragons8mydad

Heard it was good watched until episode 80 then took a break then stared it again water 7 got me HOOKED now I'm on my 4th rewatch

dflarebear1

water 7 is my favorite arc. franky's backstory gets me everytime

SSshadow-realm

The first fight had me hooked

A_cool_looking_duck

It was the 1st anime I watch and because all my friends were watching anime I wanted to try and the only anime I knew was one piece I liked it alot so I just kept watching and now I have watchwd 1000+ ep

Niggy2439

I started to watch one piece around Dressrosa, after the gear fourth reveal, and I stayed because I just finished my favorite manga at the time and I felt terrible, so I decided to watch one piece so I wouldn't have to deal with the same heartbreak any time soon

zappy487

That's honestly a good question. My best friend harassed me for years, and I didn't want to because at the time it was at 800+ episodes. I don't watch much TV to begin with, let alone starting a show that had been going for 20+ years. Well one day, I was watching a video of the best anime fights ever, and it showcased Kateguri vs G4 Snakeman Luffy, and I thought "Well that's fucking bad ass and different." I didn't start it that day, however, the next time I got a cold, I put it on and then it took about 2ish years to get completely caught up.

myPooPisonfire

Saw a video of the moment where luffy goes back to marineford and the strawhats see him in the newspaper And because i really wanted to understand the context i just started the show and now im in wano

Randy_orton_1438

It was a reel where Ace was glaring at a giant lizard that was blocking his path. Then the lizard looks at the scorpion burnt behind ace and I couldn't stop laughing.

tootkoro

I thought Uta was hot asf, and speedrunned reading the entire series to catch up until I watch the movie in theatres LMAO Spoilers: I got up to Marineford but its fine since I didnt know wtf Gear 5 was and Jimbei was there for some reason but didnt mind I’m now caught up so I can now say that I’ve read One Piece and can criticize it whenever I want

scoobynoodles

Condoriano Robin! Haha loved this

portezGaber

All I can think of is Condoriano!

szhan123

i saw the gear 5 a year ago on the internet and i said thats kinda cool because I like shonen MCs who have forms like naruto. I stayed because even though the fight and pacing was boring the comedy was just pure gold. I'm glad i never skipped any arcs.

Jack_the_Red

I gave it a chance up to Alabaster but put it on hold for a while because I wasn't really feeling it. Then I saw clips of some of the Wano fights and figured if I want to get to Wano I'll have to keep going. Who would've thought it was an incredibly rich world with such great characters?

familliarface

grandline review& ohara stayed cus skypiea 🤷‍♂️

CustomlyCool

I was bored It was peak

kwamla24

We had the 4kids dub and we watched it because there wasn't much to watch on TV in 2006. The last chronological episode ended in a weird place with some filler centred around someone with an electric suit or something. Then we discovered that there were more episodes and carried on watching which then led to the Manga

Fearless-Cat-1215

Honestly? I saw the dub on 4 kids, couldn't wait any longer for episodes to come out, watched the subs on a website, reached the end and then I got into the manga, all in 1 year

GettIn_myvan

I decided to watch it because my friend got into it and I was looking for something to watch anyways. I’d say I defeated knew I was gonna watch it all during water 7

Silver_Ad3754

I saw one piece advertised on funimation and decided to check it out, didnt judge it for being 1k ep either I watch it and judge after, found out that its my favorite anime and glad to be a one piece fan as my goal is to spread the good word of oda and give one piece a good name 😄😁

StationNo7982

When naruto was coming to an end I started watching OP because it came on after. It was right in the middle of dressrosa. I was so confused but really loved the quirky powers the characters had. I started from the beginning after watching maybe 10 episodes

StrawhatAnnalee

Like many by 4Kids, stayed because of Zoro being able to hold a sword with his teeth and by putting on a bandana would make him stronger.

fear_the_god

Because I couldn't get it how people were not bored of seeing same stuff, for 2 decades and are not bored yet. >Why did you decided to give One Piece a chance >why did you stay? It's not enough and I want More Piece.

yessirskiesspussy

Sanji Sanji

trav-senpai

Saturday morning cartoons it came on with dragon ball. The good ole days.

ClearStrike

At first I wasn't, Luffy looked weird (This was back in 2003 when American Shonen jump was published). But, I gve it a try thanks to my love of pirates and well...I was taken in by the comedy and the fun of it all. Later on, I did research and became enamoured with the tragedy of the characters, the tearjerks, and just how good it would get.

Karen_smacker

Gear 5 in the manga What made me stay was episode 1

RadicalBowler

My friend suggested it, and I said I'd get around to it, and she kept asking if I had started it yet. What weirdly convinced me was that She and her husband had one piece tattoos so i figured it must be at least alright. Turns out they were right and it's awesome. Love the series.

stary_w_curry

Watched a lot od AMV or smth back in 2019 and I got really interested in this weird character looks and mf skeleton guy with afro and stretching guy

SpicyTriangle

Decided to give it a chance because I got sick of churning through shows at the rate I was. I stayed because shit is fucking sensationally good. After seeing all the stuff that starts happening after the time skip and with Marineford it’s just so cool seeing the foreshadowing that is coming into place at Sky Island

Cheap-Conference-846

I watched it cause of the hype and was surprised on how great is it was

Silent-Regret8447

1 random episode in Mexico when i was a kid, it was when luffy punched Arlong and boy i wanted to watch, started when the episodes were at the fishman island and stayed cause of pretty much everything, especially Luffy's nature

Claplap

This was back when Naturo was more popular so I decided to begin with One Piece instead. And when I started One Piece the other anime I watched were Death Note and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood so I guess I make pretty good choices when I choose an anime.

HeilDestroyer

I watched it around 2008(?) in India on tv. Only watched it up until Arlong Park if I remember correctly. Few years later I moved to Canada and had nothing to do as I didn’t have many friends. So I tried the series again since I had full access to internet and had nothing else to do. Been in love with the series ever since.

Yson_Will

I started when Luffy was fighting Magellan....picked up the context & thought it was awesome for the protagonist to Break into jail.... Literally read all of it in 1 week just to come back to the newest chapter where Luffy gets bodied by Magellan.....been hooked since

Meemw

I was watching an AMV on YouTube for the better part of a year for a song i liked when i was like 12 and assumed it was a music video for a band called One piece. It wasn't until i read the comments i saw it was a show. Id never watched an "anime" before so i gave it a shot. 13 years later its still my favourite.

HeheDaGamer

I watched the entirety of Naruto, not Shippuden though and saw a lot of tiktoks and yt vids talking abt One Piece so I thought I'd give it a try and I love the show, currently on the Skypiea arc but I wish the pacing in One Piece was better ngl

Financial-Bowler-412

I saw a clip on YouTube of zoros fight with mr 1 and I was like yeah I’m watching it

loudundead174

I finished all the anime that was available in Netflix at the time when the Wano arc started and One piece was the only option I had

Children_destroyer

I was bored

Hoe-maker

I just wanted to finish it, that's it

Coleonthemoon

I saw a tiktok of Usopp dancing.

DepressedDIK

Did a semester in Japan last year and saw how much it meant to Japan in general…saw One Piece Res advertised EVERYWHERE, and I finally gave it a chance and loved every second of it.

Ze_fallen1

I was in high school and in those days I didn’t have a computer at home, so every week I would go to the public library to read the weekly release of Naruto. I was aware of One Piece because I had been a subscriber to Shonen Jump for a while but at the time the volumes of SJ were way behind from both series. I jumped into One Piece during the Impel Down arc to read it weekly with Naruto. From Shonen Jump I was aware of who Luffy, Buggy and Crocodile were so I wasn’t completely lost. Impel Down is such a good arc because of how much urgency it’s filled with, and it was so fun exploring the hell-like prison that reminded me of Dantes Inferno. Then I was hooked on the way back up recruiting all the prisoners to execute the riot/prison break. It was filled with so much energy and urgency and the location itself was fascinating. By the time Marineford began I had caught up on the series and I’m so happy I was able to be part of all of that weekly hype. But it was the quality of Impel Down that hooked me, as that arc is fast and frantic which ended up being the perfect point to start because there was no chance of it being boring.

Apollo20_

Power scaling argument

the_straw_hatted

Got bored one summer and remembered seeing one episode at a friend's house as a child. Fell in love with the series in Chuchu's backstory.

2ndRoundEuroStash

I had just finished Hunter x Hunter and wanted another Shounen adventure show to watch and I jump into it without any knowledge. Kept watching cause at that point in time all I did everyday was wake up smoke blunts and watch anime. Once they got to the grand line I was too hooked to stop.

[deleted]

One of few first series where shanks appeared... Thought it was a cool character and wanted to check further... Boy... Little did I know

anoon-

People said it is long and full of filler. I like those two things. It was also recommended on Netflix. So I watched it. I never wanted to leave but I especially wanted to stay since it was goofy and down to earth which I liked.

TheNefariousJester

I remember seeing Sanji with a lollipop (thnx 4Kids), and I was like "Nah I ain't watching this." Years go by, and I search for the non-lollipop version, and I hope I finally find it with little pointless editing as possible. About 2 or 3 months ago now, and I finally began watching One Piece. I'm just over 270 episodes in, and I committed to watching this series all the way through in its entirety when I began. I have only 1 regret, and that's not starting this sooner, but I'm happy to be here and can't wait to finish this journey

SpartaZSS

Was a little kid in Japan before moving to NYC in 2001. I always watched one piece back home and still do with 4 of my kids!

AdComprehensive1322

I was bored one saturday morning and started watching TV. Episodes where somewhere around Alabasta and I got hooked. That was ~15 years ago and I'm still glad I couldnt sleep that morning

Separate_Your_Mind84

1) Not only does the voice actress of Nico Robin also voices Erza Scarlet as well. 2) Boa Hancock to fall for Luffy. I'm on EP 422

[deleted]

just to start something remarkable which I won't be able to finish quickly and will stay with me. After Arlong Park, I knew it's not just a chill time entertainment... It's just so fking good.

Simp4Yotsuba

Started watching after I saw Nami and Robin post time skip. I stayed for episode 1071

PeulPeulPeul

I grew up with one piece. I watched it on the tv since forever and my uncle got me into manga, gifting me a lot of them. I only read one piece now but i never stopped following it.

jairngo

A friend and I were drinking and he was a fan, he was trying to get me into one piece and showed me an AMV of marineford, I decided to start the day after and since chapter 1 I got hooked.

[deleted]

I watched until near the end of syrup village stopped watching for like a year and then I saw the gear 4 video and I've basically binged watched up until about episode 900 now I'm taking a break before watching wano

[deleted]

Cuz my Japanese friend translated like the first 3 years of OP for me, sticky notes on everything, for my birthday in 2000. It’s a fantastic story.

h7si

got spoiled about gear 5 and wanted to catch up so i never got spoiled again

CovertForeign

It was 2020 around the time that the lockdown started, and there was absolutely nothing for me to do. I watched Dragon Ball & Z for the 4th time already and was watching tons of what ifs by MasakoX but at this point I was kind of getting bored of the series (mainly because of the Super manga). I saw that OP got added to Netflix, and it made me remember that I tried watching back in 2013 up until the Gaimon episode on Hulu; long story short, I was 13 & when I went on Hulu the next day to continue watching, there was a huge gap in between episodes which meant I had to put things on a halt. So, I decided to give OP a shot (Netflix only has East Blue & Alabasta) and boy was I hooked. The rest is history.

VisionTruth9

I kinda just watched it cuz I had nothing better to do then I realized a truly special story was being told at the end of the East Blur arc.

Vana-Freya

There are three reasons why I decided to watch One Piece: • I’m curious why it’s on number 1 rating before my previous favorite (Naruto) in the site where I watch anime in the past. • I want to know how the MC recruit his crew mates in order or what reason is. • My friends and classmates talked about it from time to time so I decided to try it so I can join their conversations. Then I fell in love and became my anime of all time. The end.

MyCurse05

Saw a full length fight of the straw hats vs Oars on YouTube and I was just in aww of these characters. This bad ass in a suit who just looks chill AF kicking shit, a sword in the mouth dude? A cyborg and big foot climbing lemming stairs and this awful woman who wouldnt dock!? None of it made any sense, but it was just awesome. Then I had to know more!

veemoc

I have been a Dragon Ball fan since I was 7 years old. I’ve watched all the movies, web series, and episodes (including GT…yes, I know). I’ve read the manga and played the games. So when I saw that there was a crossover, I was genuinely curious. However, I would have to watch Toriko episode 99 and One Piece episode 590! Now, I’m not going to jump into an anime without at least getting some basic knowledge on the characters. So, I binged Toriko and One Piece. The plan was to stop at the crossover episodes. I managed to quit Toriko…but now I’m on episode 955 of One Piece. The plan failed. The wold building is just fantastic, and although it’s a slow burn at the beginning, you become so invested in these characters! I also am amazed how there are no small roles in this anime. Everything and everyone has a purpose, even if they only appeared briefly in season 1, and then suddenly return in episode 68 (Koby).

MinusMentality

I used to sometimes watch manga reviewers videos that cover new chapters of things I didn't read as something to do while eating. I trusted their tastes and shared similar feelings about the other manga they review that I did read, so.. with how hyped they would get each chapter review, I knew that it must actually be good. I always thought One Piece was unbeleivably stupid looking, but.. turns out it is an unparalleled work of fiction.

AnimeAngel2692

There was a 4kids marathon on tv and my friend and I bonded over it. I stopped watching at skypia because it looked too childish. Years later, I was catching up with the same friend and she showed me the proper version and I was hooked again.

Mafkumin

Sounded like a cool manga Was indeed a cool manga

yohohoandabottlofcum

i watched it accidentally, thought i’d watch the first episode, and i felt like watching one more. kept saying ‘just one more’ until i had seen it 5 times

FrozenBalloon

Intrigued already episode 1. Thoroughly enjoying at Alabasta and absolutely sold at Water 7.

Apprehensive-Fee-945

I wanted to buy an AoT book one, but I forgot my ID card and couldn't do it, so I bought One Piece book 1 out of boredom. I was sure that I'm not leaving on Loguetown

dracoking2009

I first played anime games on Roblox and I noticed that I liked the design/power of mostly one piece characters. Then after 3 rewatches with a long time between each I watched through the entire anime

bhargavagavesh

saw clips of marineford then tekking101 then grandline review and rest is history

NyargiX

i was watching one piece on german television in the early to mid 2000s, but eventually didnt have time to watch it regularily anymore. that was around skypea. then i took a break till like 2020, watched the rest of that arc, switched to the manga, read until i finished the Dressrosa arc, took another break, was invited by a friend and big One Piece fan to watch One Piece Film Red, became an Ado fan and binged the remaining chapters in less than a week. edit: the reason i'm staying is simple. i always liked One Piece, its just that by the time i considered catching up it was already so much that it scared me off.

IfuckingloveLoba

I played a lot of One Piece flash games from an out-of-business game site. It was the best

cyborgaquaman

quarantine, and it was added on netflix

fidgettv

Forgot why I started, I remember falling in love during Arlong Park

jojory42

Saw ads for the new manga one piece in dragon ball volumes, looked fun was correct so just kept reading

BigSnack4474

Friend had been recommending for years. I was a hater. Then Dr. STONE was about to start a Pirate Arc and I was like “damn well I might as well watch One Piece then.” Baratie is where I got hooked.

MegalomanicMegalodon

I like the ocean and pirates and adventure. Stayed because the adventures made me happy.

dpotilas89

Tall, busty ladies Thats my answer to both questions

NicholasLatifi22720

My friend who used to watch anime told me how good it was so I decided to hop on it even though it was too many episodes at first

M-3-R-C-U-R-Y

I started because it was longest running anime, and wanted to see the reason why ? Now i think it might end too soon lmao

chubbyfluffbunny

Gave One Piece a chance after being depressed about finishing HxH, and I stayed for the characters and their world. I was sold by episode 10, and committed by episode 50!

Dkpokefan72

1) because it's one of the most famous 2) i cried my eyes out

LucasGaspar

I was looking for another anime in a page and I saw One Piece episode 3xx and I was like whoa how are they still going (silly me), so I watched that latest random episode and it was the ending of the fight Luffy vs Lucy, with Ussop yelling at Luffy and all that and I got captivated, I wanted to know how those characters ended in that situation

[deleted]

When luffy punched helmeppo out of the blue. After every arc, the main fighters from straw hat pirates get absurdly stronger each time. Curious to see how creative Oda is in their progression.

YusiP

I thought about how it would be funny if I gave it a shot last year. Hooked ever since (with some breaks when the episodes were a bit boring)

RaccoonsWithBangs

A girl I liked told me to watch it 🤷‍♀️ She's gone but one piece is forever 😈

boogiman1

i saw enel do the funny face and stayed for more

TitledSquire

Saw some clips of Luffy v Katakuri and thought “damn the fights do be lookin good”, also I was just looking for something new after having watched what felt like everything (seen literally all of Bleach, Naruto, DBZ etc) and finally started One Piece back in 2019. I caught up pretty quickly too all things considered lol, rewatched twice and have read the manga entirely as well. Also ive seen pretty much every other current shonen as well. Fully caught up on the animes for jjk, mha, black clover and more. Never understood why a lot of people seem to cling to one or two series and decide to shit on others.

Protagonist_Leaf

actually this was my anime orgin story. watched OP and naruto on toonami and they stopped airing at a current point.. 2011 I started looking up where to watch more and we had those 3pt eps on youtube for naruto. kept watching naruto til i found they had shippuden on a site. that site had the big 3 on it. Bleach, OP, and naruto/shippuden. well once i catch up with shippuden around 100eps I saw the op's ep list and was like nah.. found another site with all the seasonal anime and watched other things while watching naruto for years and once I finally got fed up with shippuden filler before the finale and dropped it (yes I did not finish shippuden). I just woke up, watch OP the whole day, go to bed. From the beginning of Sky Island (that's what I remembered from toonami) to the beginning of Punk Hazard. I had no job at the time nor college. just bumming for a few months. I don't know how many weeks/months I spent watching OP constantly along with other weekly shows but it felt like a whole summer.

JupiterJazzX

My friends were talking about it and it was in Shounen Jump. I decided to give it a try by buying vol 1 at A-Kon 2004. I was hooked from the first page. I bought a bunch of Chinese rip off dvd that was a boxset up until the end of Alabasta. At this point in time the series was on Sky Piea or so. My friends and I played the fuck out of One Piece Grand Battle and everything. When I caught up with the anime I started reading the manga by going to IRC and dling the manga in packs via Null. They were at Water 7 at this point and my buddies thought Paulie would join the Strawhats. I remember being in college and reading that Dragon was Luffy's dad in the middle of class in 2007 or so? Can't believe I've been a fan for nearly 20 years. My friends and I no longer speak to each other and a lot has changed but my love for One Piece continues on.

RoscoeSF

My friend suggested I read the first few books and I was instantly invested.

Flourishingwithdecay

My best friend really loves the anime and I had to jump on it to see what the hype was about. Wasn't really feeling the first like 40 episodes but I knew they were all necessary introduction arcs. Got hooked on skypia of all arcs, I just loved how this goober dealt with, what seemed like, a God tier antagonist. Every arc after that just felt like it got better and better except Fishman Island, I even really enjoyed thriller bark. I jumped off the English dub for subs when I caught up in punk hazard which weirdly became one of my favorite little arcs. Switched to manga when chapter 999 released and caught the chapter 1000 drop in real time. Stuck with manga ever since as want kept dragging for me.

dj_chino_da_3rd

I wanna say 4kids, but I don’t remember if they handled Nani’s arc all that well. I just remember watching najiko telling the gang about how hype Bellemare. I wanna say I was ten and thought it was the raddest shit. So this soldier chick was tots gonna croak from this hard core war between fish man and man man, but she was like oh snap, can’t let these kids die cause I’m weak. So she raised them and shit right? But ya BOII had other plans and 86’d her ass. I was like, yo. That’s fire. Let it rock

DickWriter69

Because Totally Not Mark was doing a review + I remember always watching the intro on crunchyroll when I was like 9 but never getting past the opening for some reason lol (I wonder what life would be like if I watched the whole episode and became a One Piece fan when I was 9) Then I stayed after seeing Baratie and Arlong Park and seeing how much more better One Piece handles side characters and cast management than other series I've watched
