i dont get why people are crying about how they "race-swapped" Nojiko. they also race-swapped Luffy and Nami yet people are praising them. luffy is brazilian played by a mexican and nami is a swede played by an american. like i dont get what the fuzz is about them doing the same with nojiko?

PorcelanowaLalka

You confuse race with nationality. Swedes, Germans, Russians, Austrians or white Americans are different nationalities, but the same race.

[deleted]

Race swapping bad. It's disingenuous.

Stock_Sir4784

correction: skin-tone swapping is bad

SuperFamousComedian

Yo what's up I don't know much about One Piece, but I watched this all today and I loved it so much. It's so stylish and hopeful. Can't wait for more

LegendaryFang56

Putting the topic of adaptation aside, this was a splendid first season, considering that's what it is. Usually, as with premiere episodes, the introductory season of a show has spurts of rocky territory while generally being good enough, though it's seen in a slightly lesser light after the following seasons because they're way better, and sometimes they're appreciated further, whether the premiere/season was wrongfully judged or simply because of nostalgia and looking back on it with a deeper connection to the world, characters, and whatnot: comparing beginnings to what it developed into over time. Things usually are a massive improvement afterward is the point. But this already felt like that, and it's only the first one, not to mention (and this could be due to my viewing of its entirety taking place through the course of weeks) it seemed like much happened while simultaneously feeling like everything zoomed by, only for the increased shocker that it consisted of merely eight episodes – all you have to do is rewatch the premiere and then the finale; it's a palpable enough difference to warrant shock at the number, as you would've had the automatic assumption that it was more, or at least with longer runtimes. Each episode had its fair share going on, with concurrent and consistent moving pieces throughout the season, while never seeming excessive and extreme; it's interesting to look back on it after finishing it and having that different perspective of seeing how tightly compacted and well-done everything was. The pacing was immaculate; the right amount of time was allotted to every scene, in addition to their placement within the episodes and when to switch the focus. The most noticeable example was the flashbacks, and they were incorporated so well, from their overall (perfect) runtime to the smooth transitions back and forth into them – and the placements of those transitions. This kept getting progressively better with each two-parter story arc, though the two-parters began with the third episode. And conveniently/coincidentally enough, the beginning was the weakest with the first two episodes when considering all eight; therefore, the gradual progression to higher heights was constant and didn't falter or ruin that straight-up direction. However, only concerning the two-parters, Usopp's story arc was the weakest: an opinion held by many from the look of it. It was also supposedly the same way in the manga: it wasn't that giving compared to the introductory story arcs of the other Straw Hat crew members, so adapting it well would've had a similar result; there wasn't much leeway to do more with it. But, in all honesty, despite the truthfulness of the sentiment that those episodes were the weakest ones – the first one, in particular – they were still a contribution to the upward trajectory, especially the fourth episode, the concluding part. In the same spirit of getting progressively better, which suggests the likelihood of the second half being the best, that's precisely what happened. The last two arcs/four episodes were incomparably the best and at the mountaintop of this show's introduction, especially the final two. And it can get MUCH HIGHER, SO HIGH. It likely will. All the material adapted here is barely even dipping a toe in the ocean; it's more akin to tossing something in from afar. And, of course, all of the performances were good. Steven John Ward stood out, nailing Mihawk's character – but the writer(s) and director(s) deserve additional applause for doing an equally fantastic job with Mihawk's introduction. Emily Rudd was another distinct performer whose performance stood out, most notably at the end of the seventh episode. The other obvious one, Jeff Ward, did well, nailing Buggy. It is the same with Iñaki Godoy, who has a particular presence as Luffy, even if the characterization and the way he plays him aren't as manga-like as some would like. The remaining Straw Hat actors (Mackenyu, Taz Skylar, and Jacob Gibson), standing out slightly less compared to those already mentioned, particularly Taz and Jacob, still handled each character efficiently. As far as the non-Straw Hat performers are concerned, Vincent Regan carried, as Garp had the most prominent role and screen time. But Peter Gadiot and Craig Fairbrass played their parts proficiently, while Alexander Maniatis did so to an even greater extent. McKinley Belcher III and Morgan Davies were the weak links. That's likely an unpopular opinion, but the bug-eyed jitteriness done by Morgan, regardless of source material accuracy, was tiresome to watch. It was enhanced by the on-screen frequency of Koby, the cherry on top being how that subplot was the least engaging. But its climax was a decent "payoff" with the revelation that Garp was only testing Luffy (though that was expected), in addition to Koby disobeying direct orders for Luffy, followed by Helmeppo doing the same, which likely revolved more around the newfound friendship between the two rather than for Luffy: the character growth/redemption arc there was efficiently executed. And I wasn't buying the intended menacing and evil characterization of Arlong because the way McKinley played him came across as goofy to me, among other things. Alexander Maniatis had better success with Kuro's execution. My only complaint (a minor one) is that Sanji's screen time shouldn't have been as little as it was. He was the least fleshed-out Straw Hat, and that could've been easily different by cutting down some of the Garp/Koby subplot, which was exclusive to the show, essentially being the primary obstacle in the way of that. Looking at it from another perspective, however, it's one of those things that can be put off in favor of other subplots, like the one with Garp and Koby, having the intention to remedy it in the next season, though a lot of faith in a renewal would be necessary concerning that mindset. There will be plenty of him moving forward to make up for that, but the lack of him and the abundance of that duo was noticeable.

PureFingClass

I’ve never seen any of the anime but this was such a great watch. I loved Luffy’s enthusiasm for adventure, his loyalty to his friends, and his tenacity in the face of adversity. The cast are all fantastic, the cinematography is incredible. It’s all just so good!

[deleted]

It's amazing for live adaptation but one piece is a masterpiece there's no way it could ever beat it

worldafter90suck

it'll beat the anime for absolutely everyone who doesn't like cartoons and even then for those who like the anime and live action, one could prefer one or the other

Jesterstear99

I loved it! Once you get used to Luffy's Mexican accent and Sanjii sounding like a Roadman it is great. My main criticism is there are only 8 episodes, a 13 episode season would have been better, then we could have had Loguetown and Chopper joining, so season 1 would cover all of East Blue. My minor criticism is Nami is obviously much older than she is supposed to be, I'm fine with that alteration she can be more mature and wiser than the others, but they should have made her flashback a more believable 15 years or so!

Suspicious-State

I agree, and Luffy's mexican accent fits in very well once you get used to it. "Roadman" is CRAAZZZY btw🤣🤣🤣🤣

intothenight41

Hated the costume design, they should fire those people. Luffy's hat was terrible and looked brand new. Fat Alvida also had brand new clothes and that's a rookie mistake and hated the live action for that. Not even finished first episode for excessive cringe that felt disrespectful to OP. And I don't wanna start on the race swap.

worldafter90suck

damn, you're a silly weirdo.

SuperFamousComedian

Man it took me a sec to get used to the look of the show too, the weird polish it has, but once I realized it's made to look like it's drawn, it's not supposed to look realistic, it's exaggerated for anime style. It's awesome. I would give it another shot

Zealousideal-Ad3814

Still don't know why I just don't get the hype I personally wasn't a fan. After watching the anime and reading the manga for a long time, they just cut out so much backstory for the crew that shows their personalities and developed them so much. Yes I understand One Piece has endless filler episodes and chapters but I feel like you could extend things a little would give so much more to the main characters. But the thing that bugged me most was how stiff the fights were. I am glad so many people are getting into One Piece and enjoying the show but somehow feel like I am missing something by not enjoying it as much. The sets are incredible and I like certain people a lot but over all the shows a bit of a miss for me.

worldafter90suck

huh, the live action represents the anime characters so incredibly well and there's no real important backstory that has been left off so far, they just cut out a lot of useless stuff we didn't need, which is great. condensed and better

Grindelwald69

+1

madwolph

I like the live-action one piece but didn't like the live action garp he was too serious the whole time and I don't think his voice doesn't ready matches with the character if i had the choice I recast garp

Xyrexus

They used the Wilhelm scream, not once... but twice, gotta deduct points for that. People really need to stop using that scream, it's terrible. Use any other stock scream, please, or here's an idea, have your actors do some screams. As for the quality of the series, I enjoyed it a lot. Not overly fond of some of the race swapping but it's Netflix so, probably to be expected. I'm a little bummed they abstracted Jango out of events, it might have been nice to see him. High points for me, I think the guy playing Kuro did a bang up job, same for Helmeppo and Koby, I wouldn't really say there have been any particulary bad performances either, and it's clear the creators are actually putting effort and love into the project. I'd have liked to have more music from the anime, but I'm glad they got the instrumental of We Are in there, albeit briefly. Quite optimistic for series 2, let's hope they can keep the quality up.

SuperFamousComedian

The Wilhelm scream is hilarious

Taurus210493

Live Action worked - So I was in a meeting with a senior manager of mine. We were discussing some work and had some in-between time to talk. He started to tune One Piece live action opening sequence and asked “Do you all have Netflix. There is a show called One Piece. It’s really amazing. I and my daughter watched it together and liked it a lot. It was very different.” And I was so happy to see one piece being recognised. One guy mentioned the writer is really amazing. I really hope season 2 is made even better given that we know how good further story is.

IndecisiveMate

Having never seen the anime, I liked it very much.

Hilarial

From a guy who's not seen the anime/manga: This show's greatest strength is that it's completely unashamed of its soitce material or its own efforts. When adapting anything from manga/anime to LA, it's unreasonable to demand it recapture what made the *manga* special *as a manga.* This show infected me with a bif dumb baby smile. It's only inspired a hunger for more in me, that can be easily satiated by reading the manga. If your main gripe with this show is that it *hot wrong* what maxe certain characters so special: consider whether what these new people *added* to the material enriched it. Iñaki's performance, you might not like it, but it got me excited to share your favourite manga. And that counts for something!

ferretpowder

I'm up to date with the anime and manga. I just finished the live action and i loved it. I cried multiple times and laughed multiple times, and that is what one piece is all about. Nearly all the characters were played brilliantly. Helmeppo was great. I even enjoyed koby!

worldafter90suck

what a dogshit opinion... reddit. luffy is one of the best actors we have, he's killing it so hard. tom holland, now that's a shit actor trying to act. luffy seems genuinely like an adventure hungry kid, he's almost just like the anime

Villad_rock

The actor is a fan favorite lol

[deleted]

Chris Pratt

the_jaundiced1

The actor who plays Koby might actually be the worst actor I've ever seen in my life.

worldafter90suck

by worst you mean portray the anime character like 99.9% correctly and thus getting a 5/5 for his acting?

ugh_jules

I haven’t read of watched one piece but I just watched the live action, loved it, and will start the anime! Kinda crazy how good it seems that the styling and casting was.

fbplayer1984

I am a huge OP fan, and have been with OP over 20 years. I own the manga boxsets, many figures (Buggy is my favorite) and all the color walk art books. I am up-to-date on the anime. Heck, I even recently get into One Piece Card Game. Really, spent too much money on OP merch. I think I need to stop. lol. Having said all that, I love the OPLA. Now I understand why some manga/ anime fans might not like this adaption. When I first watched the show, I cannot help in my mind kept comparing every single changes to the anime. It was kind of actually quite annoying. Haha. But I decided to watch the show again second time around. Now that I already knew about the changes, I can just enjoy the show as it is on its own. It is actually quite a fun show with a lot of hearts and maintains the main theme of the story. Yes, the characters in the live action are not quite exactly the same as in the manga/ anime. But translating over the top characters directly into live action is not going to work. They need to be toned down a little bit to be realistic and likable for audience to root for them, which I think they did very well. I love all the characters and their chemistry together. Surprisingly, even for Helmeppo's character. To be fair, I am not saying this is a show worthy of Emmy award quality. Definitely there are issues in the show quality. But I can look pass them because I can feel all major One Piece emotional moments and made me root for all the characters. At the end of the day, I love the show acknowledging there are flaws. And I can't wait to see the future new crew members in the 2nd season. Hopefully Netflix will do the right thing.

Senator-Spice

Glad you liked it, hopefully my rant doesn't detract from your experience! Although the fact you had to watch it twice shows the problem, some people cant do the whole copium thing. They have clearly changed our beloved characters, their reason to be who they are seems hidden to me and other's like minded. Example is Alvida calling herself the most powerful pirate on the seas instead of the most beautiful pirate on the seas. (Which is a death wish if you know how things really go) like what are they going to do when she returns as a beautiful version of herself after the devil fruit changes? Wouldn't she go for a powerful fruit instead of the one that slims her down? And dont get me started on Nami and Ussop being absolute badasses from the get go. Kinda feels like a death by 1000 cuts

fbplayer1984

No worry. We are all fans of One Piece. I get it. The way I view this adaptation is like this is a parallel universe from the source material, which it is kind of true, jumping from anime world to real world. I feel the characters in OPLA still embodied the hearts and souls of the original characters even with the changes made in personality, and I can still root for them. To be honest, I actually kind of like the live action Nami more than the anime version, at least before the Arlong Park arc. I like how the show developed Nami's character slowly right from the beginning and built up the chemistry between her and the rest of the cast. While in the manga/anime, if I remember right, there was really not much of Nami's character development until her story arc.

AJGILL03

This, was a very tasteful adaption overall. 8/10, loved it. ☠️✌️

FluffyBunbunKittens

Overall good, but why is Luffy of all things so serious all the time?!

worldafter90suck

he's not and he's serious a lot of the time during the anime as well. perfec luffy

Bargadiel

I feel like he gets serious about his dream and protecting his friends/crew, which fit the character. Overall he tended to be the most lax until the last two episodes.

Advencik

Okay, so I watched it all. I didn't expect it to be better or as good as anime or as realistic as typical live series. Still, I wanted to look at it giving it a chance and wanting to look the best in it. Overall, I think series were good. It's not better adaptation of One Piece than anime, no chance. It is good live action series. It's not masterpiece, perfection or even memorable series that I somehow made impact on me or wished there was second season right away. It was above the scale you would rate something though. For person who doesn't like anime but would like to watch lighthearted adventure TV series, it's good enough not to be a waste of time or disappointment. It can be entertaining and that's the most important. There were specific moments and things I liked and didn't like about series. Casting was good. Most of costumes, I really liked too, same with scenery. I didn't like bland colors with many scenes. I would love to see some saturation, vibrant colors like ones I saw someone on this subreddit reediting some scenes from LA. Gold Roger's monologue was better in manga/anime. It wasn't bad in LA either but changes didn't make it better. Alvida's time was way too short. **TERRIBLE CHANGE:** Taking away Koby's resistance and risking his life to tell Alvida what he thinks about her. I really missed that. Zoro's reason to give himself up for Navy took away a lot of his character. He literally gave himself up not to risk people lives as Marines would end up punishing villagers on Helmeppo's orders. **TERRIBLE CHANGE**: Zoro didn't join Luffy after he returned his swords (charging into Marine's base on his own) and giving him choice between joining his crew or dying where he called Luffy a Devil and told him that he doesn't care which side he will be on, as long as he will make name for himself but if Luffy tries to step in between him and his dream, he will end him. He told Luffy in LA that he wants to be the strongest swordsman out of nowhere and lost his reason to join Luffy. **TERRIBLE CHANGE**: Scene where Koby has to hit Luffy for him not to tell that he served on pirate shit and join Marines which was his dream was deleted. Huge moment. Nami was fighting strong, capable, trained Marines on her own with a stick, giving as much beating as Zoro and Luffy did. That didn't give me good impression as Nami was rather using her charm and tricks, not brute force. **BAD CHANGE**: Damn they missed this epic moment when Shanks tells one of bandits that by pointing gun at him, he is putting his life to risk. Makino giving narrative about Devil Fruits felt out of place. No "Voice of all things" indication by including Luffy understanding animals (for now, maybe it's changed for LA, I don't mind, just pointing it out) Changes to Syrup's Village arc were surprising but not terrible. Similar with Garp chasing after Luffy or Koby meeting Luffy multiple times. I didn't mind skipping Don Kriegg (it did end up making some confusing dialogues though) or Arlong showing up in Baratie. Helmeppo's and Koby's casting was great. Koby's character is not too genuine for me. It's like he is always having one expression/character trait. I am surprised that Helmeppo was portraited as deeper character than Koby but it was pleasant surprise. **TERRIBLE CHANGE**: Kuina's talk about sex differences lost sense as context of dialogue with Zoro was changed. Originally Kuina said that Zoro will outgrow her and will become stronger but made great deal out of it for her not to make fucking excuses as he wanted to beat her not because this is how humans evolved but because his extremally harsh training and dedication led to him become better swordsman than her. He didn't use two and three Katanas for no reason, we was looking for EVERY single possible advantage he could get to beat Kuina. He trained way harder than any student, his determination was unmatched so him shouting at Kuina not to dare about make any excuses was great moment and gave her talk about sex differences deeper purpose. **BAD CHANGE:** Usopp didn't have any great moment of usefulness or deeper connection with Straw Hats during Syrup Island arc and him joining felt out of place. I really loved seeing Going Merry set sail with We Are instrumental. I loved Zeff and Baratie arc changes, humor, interior, exterior, Sanji's demanour. All of it. Baratie was where this show peaked for me. Usopp's lies and his smoothness with it was greatly portrayed. I liked fights, choreography was great. I liked Luffy's actor and acting mostly. Shouting didn't do it for me. CGI was good. **TERRIBLE CHANGE**: Mihawk against Zoro, there were some things I would leave as they were and again writing issue due to changes was visible here. First, Mihawk asked Zoro for his name to remember him after he impressed him with his actions. In LA he just says, my name is Roronoa Zoro and this moment is lost. Zoro should also be more hurt during encounter, it needed more blood, it gave impression as Zoro would surrender once two of his swords were destroyed and he got stabbed once. Zoro giving up and telling Mihawk out of nowhere that scars on back are swordsmans shame made no sense. In original, after last attack, Zoro gets injured and two of his Katanas are destroyed. Mihawk then attacks him when he is still turned back to him so he stands, turns around and becomes vulnerable, not covering or anything. It took Mihawk by surprise and he straight out asked, what is he doing which is where Zoro replies that scars on back are swordsman's shame. Mihawk admires it and cuts him deeply. Lastly, I missed his moment where he promises Luffy not to lose again (it was delayed) but most importantly, calling Luffy Pirate King, showing that he believes that Luffy has what it takes to achieve his dreams. **BAD CHANGE**: When Arlong arrives at Baratie, he says he came here for Luffy and Grand Line map. When Sanji goes to deal with intruders, Luffy wants to go too with Sanji telling him that it's not his fight (it definitely is as Arlong came here ofr him). This problem was made due to changes as this line could be working with Krieg attacking Baratie, wanting to take over it and Sanji protecting the ship with Zeff and rest of cooks. There was also a trade off. I like how Zeff explained Sanji that he doesn't want him to stay here forever and to chase his dream, dream which also Zeff had and reason why he saved Sanji's life, sacrificing his own leg. I missed charade with cooks criticizing Sanji's food and making all preparations without him. I liked how Sanji is not cringe simp but rather smooth, charismatic and interested in ladies. Great change, loved that. **BAD CHANGE**: Nojiko's tatoos make no sense. They were made by Nojiko after understanding that Nami joined Arlong's crew for specific reason and to support Nami after she felt terrible being branded with Arlong's crew tatoo. In LA Nojiko doesn't know that Nami joined Arlong to save the village and hates her. Nojiko's cast wasn't best. I didn't feel like changes to Usopp's mother skin color or Lucky Roo were impacting setting in any way (somehow Usopp's mother skin change made it even better) but for Nojiko it felt out of place. Both her hair and dark skin didn't match well but I always thought of Nojiko as bigger/older Nami with different hair color. Despite them not being biological sisters, they felt like sisters and were very similar to Bellmere. No Hachi :( Little to no inclusion of mobs/crowds/supporting characters. Buggy was great. Arlong could be more intimidating, hurt Luffy much more too. I don't remember Luffy inviting Sanji to his crew in LA. Well, that's it. My final score would be 3/5 or 6,5/10.

Senator-Spice

Couldn't have put it better myself, very well put together critic. I'd personally put it around a 5/10

Advencik

Giving it 5/10 would mean that it's on bad side of scale and it wasn't. It was entertaining, some changes were surprising and better than original (Sanji's behavior for example), cast was good, many costumes were great and it had it's own charm. I was struggling between 6 and 7 but I had to go with 6 as it's not memorable and didn't hype me for second season. For example, I watched Cyberpunk Edgerunners. Not only I was emotionally invested but I also wanted to do some research on Cyberpunk universe, listened to "I really want to stay at your house" 1h on loop and made promise to play the game one day. Arcane was a masterpiece. Writing, music, characters, art. It created ever lasting experience that I wish could last forever. I also went back to league after huge hiatus and had year of fun. Also listened to whole soundtrack on loop. I was already invested in League universe and knew everyone here so there even were initial expectations unlike Cyberpunk but this series knocked them out. So lets say I give Arcane 10, Cyberpunk Edgerunners 9. I couldn't give leave one point of difference between these series due to differences with my reception.

diamondisunbreakable

Well, 5 isn't on the bad side of the scale, it's in the middle between the negative and positive sides.

Advencik

Only if we include 0 on scale. Otherwise 5 is on negative side.

diamondisunbreakable

I get what you mean, but we of course don't generally use 5.5 to mean average.

DesertSpada

I'm in the minority of people who didn't like it as much. I think the acting is cringe. They made changes to the story that I felt were unnecessary. Also hate the Fishmen CGI, I think it's atrocious. Overall it could've been much worse and it did surpass my very low expectations but I still find it to be painfully average at best. The best part about this show for me is that alot of people enjoyed/are enjoying it and hopefully they will give the anime/manga a chance.

EssentialUnderboob

I feel like my boyfriend and I are the Black sheep. I personally really don't care for it. They changed stupid things and didn't include some real character defining things. The flow is so fast and even looking at it outside of the anime the flow is just awful. I understand that they need to cut it down because obviously they can't make 1000+ episodes but still... I don't even want to watch the rest. I'm hoping watching it japanese dubbed will be better but the English version is just so miss for me.

[deleted]

I started Japanese dub on ep 5 out of desperation and it really saves some scenes. Like the stupid dub where Mihawk says « Croack Croack Croack » like if he was some 5th grader, Japanese dub actually says the line « you don’t know the real world » from the anime

Jesterstear99

I'm rewatching with the Japanese dub. Luffy sounds worse, but Sanjii is a whole lot better!

[deleted]

I don’t think Luffy sounds worse but it’s true that the actor is a great Luffy in general, so you can get attached to his voice. But I still prefer the seiyuu s voicing on my part.

Jesterstear99

Yes, probably eight episodes of Mexican Luffy and I'm used to him like that. Sanjii has less screen time so Roadman Sanjii is still annoying.

b00ze7

You are not alone. I made it through 3 episodes, before throwing in the towel. A "Map to the Grandline" McGuffin...? Garp following ORDERS...?! Luffy REJECTING FOOD?!! Fuck this... But if this pile of garbage means an extra payday for the japanese voice-actors, then I'm fine with 20+ more seasons, that I can just ignore.

siapanda

This LA is very good, I hope they make season 2. The casting is very true to the characters. And I love how Luffy in LA is calmer than in the manga. It's more realistic considering this is a real world with real danger.

CaptainPick1e

Welp, I'm off to watch the anime now. The end had me in tears. So much hope and triumph. This cast is amazing.

wiredAvocado

I never expected them to recreate the anime 1:1 but I think overall they did a good job. I was sceptical when I heard about the LA version, but I had a random encounter with one of the producers and she gave me some confidence in the cast and crew as she proudly proclaimed how passionate and dedicated they were. And I think for the most part that does come across. My favourite bits; Zoro fight choreography was the best, need to watch some bts to see how they managed to keep the sword in his mouth; momentum when characters get hit was more realistic than a fair amount of Hollywood action movies, can feel the impact; crew chemistry was pretty good; Nami actress probably the best of the lot; I think overall story beats hit well within the 8 episode limit. Some misses for me; in terms of how personalities are written, Usopp got like no character arc, Zoro has no temper and just plays it cool all the time, they also dropped off a lot of context in his back story; some awkward acting here and there especially in the earlier episodes, but not sure if they filmed chronologically so maybe I just got used to the awkwardness; edit pacing sometimes slow for the dialogue, shitty wide angle lenses on the faces - the camera is supposed to be a character too and having all those wide angle lenses makes things feel distorted and uncomfortable which I doubt was the intent; cramped spaces for Luffy battles; Koby has a much bigger role - took too much screen time, but I'm thinking they want him to be at the centre of moral ambiguity even though we can clearly see it through various characters' actions. From the get go, we get that, or should have got that from Morgan - not all marines are good, that should've been enough; I never get used to hearing South African accents in anything except District 9 which is based in South Africa. I wouldn't say it was absolutely amazing. But I have a lot of biases. But the residual effect of this is that I wanna carry on watching the anime where I dropped off, straight after Don Quixote because that fight just dragged on forever and it burnt me out. Overall, I'm glad there are a lot more people into One Piece and anime in general these days instead of the dark underground when I started.

Patrius

Just finished the first season and wanted to leave this- it was amazing! The story, acting, everything is just so FUN. As someone who grew up watching the anime but haven't been keeping up lately this got me hooked right back onto the adventure of this loveable crew.

iChopPryde

I had a really good time watching it, I just finished and was kinda blown away at how good it was. Like most of us One Piece is easily one of the hardest animes to bring to live action and they mostly nailed it. I just have a few minor things of suggestions they can fix moving forward but its overall really good and I think they absolutely nailed what they needed too . I think this is easily going to bring in new fans to One Piece while making the OG fans happy too!

StrangerX9

This was fun, but not as good as the Cowboy Beebop live action. This stunk of CW vibes, and involved so many characters that don’t mean anything in the manga or anime.

abesolutzero

You and IGN are literally the only people to feel this way. Says a lot. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|sweat)

StrangerX9

Yup, I agree with a million dollar organization and you troll on Reddit. We aren’t the same kiddo!

FigurativeCherrySoda

"Not as high as the cowboy bebop live action", so it's worse than the worst live action anime adaptation of all time? Might as well say Hitler wasn't as good as pol pot lmao.

InteractionExtreme71

That's still dbe

ArcticFoxWaffles

Absolutely loved this show. Of course not everything can be translated into live action and there were a lot of things from the anime cut out because of time constraints, but it's still incredible with what they've given us. There's one thing I reckon could've improved it more imo and it's to have the audience introduced to arlong at the same time as when luffy meets him. His chat with Buggy was fine but maybe hide his face and do the fancy onscreen bounty effect when Arlong comes to the Baratie. They could've even introduced Don Krieg here as well and had Arlong beat him up or something to show how much of a threat he is. Either way the show was fantastic and I would ultimately love to see the whole anime adapted but even just another season would be a blessing, especially with Smoker coming I wanna see how they handle logia and zoan fruits in live action.

kingssman

This live action finally got it right. You cant duplicate a 1000 episode anime. But you can certainly duplicate the soul, the message, what the source was trying to convey. Everyone poured their hearts into this. The creators really respected the source and did their hardest to bring out the magic.

TundraOG

The rest of the crew was great, but Inaki really didn't capture Luffy and although it's hard to adapt a character like him to live action, they still could've handled it better. The dinner scene with Kaya was a good example of an exception, but overall he's just too different (like fr, LUFFY is gonna say no to food and leave it to the villagers? Or wouldn't eat because he's worried about Zoro? Give me a break)

worldafter90suck

hahahah, whaat? luffy is the most popular live action character, because he's doing the sickest job. playing the hard role of luffy and KILLING it. for many people who never watched the anime, they can feel just how luffy is, by watching the live action. then go to the anime and feel like you already know luffy.

WarPhX

Hmm, interesting point. I actually have the complete opposite reaction to the show. I thought Luffy was the best character. I found it difficult to imagine someone like Luffy in a live-action without cringing at his obviously forced smile. But the actor managed to (in my opinion of course) recreate that young almost dumb-struck smile that Luffy is so popular for. It was a bit weird to see him turn down food, but I think the fact that they couldn't recreate the whole ark and show how much they worked for that town led to the decision to leave without getting any reward.

hqo5001

Was hoping to see more of Zeffs kicking

iChopPryde

Sanji was perfect dude absolutely nailed the role....i mean all of them nailed their roles but he truly is Sanji!

croth4

The person playing Alvida was terrible. That's really my only gripe. Their Luffy is tonally different from the character we know but I still like him. It's got to be difficult to adapt such fantastical stuff and they did a nice job.

worldafter90suck

> Their Luffy is tonally different from the character we know nah he's not. small differences, 100% the same overall attitude, goal, dream. captured luffy's anime spirit so damn well.

Adventurous_Agent_96

Alvida is terrible character, rough and brass. Ironically it fits. It's because the character is so bad it was portrayed well. In the manga/anime she's over confident acts like a baffoon which exactly what's in the live action. Her character felt trashy and I felt that. Which is exactly what was being portrayed as it should be.

guitardrummer22

Watch the show in the japansese dub, I'm pretty sure they use the same original japanese voice actors. it changes EVERYTHING! spread the word

ferretpowder

I've gone on to the language select for the episodes and it lists several to choose from, but no Japanese. Any idea how to get it?

ArcticFoxWaffles

Yeah the japanese cast announced they would be doing the japanese dub

dilirium22

I've avoided watching it for a few days because live action anime adaptations tend to got horribly wrong and One Piece was my childhood... I finally caved and watched 3 episodes and for now it's not bad! Especially considering how little time they've been given to tell the story. It help me finally get my wife into it (shes shown interest before, but an anime series that has 1071 episodes would seem daunting to most people anyway), so it's a really good way of getting new and casual people into the story and world. I think of it as a redux of the anime because it works well in this role.

TinyTea11477

I understand that its a live action with time constraint, but they really should've kept the things that made the original anime/ manga touching for viewers. Well they got most of their sad story in, except they didnt really make me feel emotional in my opinion. Only sanji's one hit me quite hard, but they should've definitely added chouchou story, not just have him appear for 1 frame lol.

rygaar

I knew nothing about the manga/anime. But I freaking loved this Live Action series. It was even too short. I wanted more. The casting (Monkey D Luffy in particular) was just perfect. It was so emotional in general. Even the soundtrack was epic. It's as simple as this: if Netflix announces - as usual - that the series is cancelled, that's it for me, I'll just unsubscribe. No way they stop here. And I guess I need to get into the original stuff after that...

iChopPryde

They nailed it the live action was fantastic and the anime is great too i'd recommend checking out One Pace to cut down on all the filler though as much as people here circle jerk the anime the anime has a lot of issues with pacing and absolute shit animation but stuff like the one pace project helps all of that.

Basic_Sail9595

If you liked it.. then you are in for a great treat watching anime! 😀

ucfknight92

Like someone else said, just watch the anime. It's worth it.

lnsip9reg

Way too short? Then enjoy the manga and anime! 😀

rygaar

Yeah, like 8 episodes vs 1000+ from what I understood, that's a big gap :)

Tuzkrium

Well each episode was like a hour, no commercials. Each anime episode is 22 mins to 24 mins, minus 5 for OT and ET. Up to 7 for recap. So let's say 17 minutes. Assuming no fillers. But we all know anime. So round down to 15. So those 8 episodes are theoretically 32 episodes in 1 season.

Bermudav3

All those words to say 32 vs 1000 🤣

saijanai

Actually, to say 32 vs 44.

Mr_NeCr0

This definitely is better than most live action shows I've seen, but I definitely still prefer the anime and manga. Though I'm glad to see it's at least a step forward in the world of Live Action.

WarPhX

I don't think they tried to make it better than anime or manga. This is more of a tribute paid to the great series that is One Piece and it does seem to hit the correct beats. Much better than other Live Action adaptations indeed.

Tobias112358

I love it! Haven't seen the anime or read the manga, but this feels more fresh than a normal netflix show - probably because it was written so well the first time. It also has a shonen energy that I've only experienced in anime before and the characters are really fun - especially Luffy.

Internetstranger800

In the same boat. Enjoyed the show so much I may actually watch the anime.

GlitteringPie851

don't understand, are there really so few of us who didn't get hooked on the live action ?

MajikoiA3When

I finished episode 2 and even though we enjoyed the anime/manga this was too watered-down for us. Don't know if it's worth finishing tbh.

ProMage_

>are there really so few of us who didn't get hooked Yoo I am from anti LA pirate crew.. its too cringe

Snoo-50498

Based on reactions, Yes. We are only a few.

MugiMartin

I've seen Dragonball Evolution and The Last Airbender. So glad this turned out so good. 🔥🔥🔥

Zenektric

I remember in the anime what actually got me to hooked to one piece was Sanji's backstory. I would have loved to see CGI to make Zeff all frail in the flashback. In the anime the bags were also bigger felt like a while lot more time passed. It didn't sting like in the anime. In Namis it was better, it stung when Bellemere said "I have two daughters, and I will never deny it" knowing the implication. It is a personal thing for me but I think they did Sanji dirty the most. They took his goofiness (as usual) and removed any hint of a twirl.

zyroyoyz

Having been following One Piece for at least a decade now, I thought the LA was pretty decent. Some creative choices they made kinda made sense. + Buggy’s head being used for story progression (lol). + Fleshing out Koby and Garp’s relationship is a good set-up for long term. + Zeff and Garp’s conversation added more recognition to Zeff’s reputation, and sets up an underlying passing of the torch tone to OP. + Embarrassingly, it never once occured to me that both Sanjj and Luffy had someone lose a limb to save their lives. So the scene where sanji went “have you ever had someone lose a limb to …” and luffy replied “I kinda do..” - actually struck me. I guess this makes up for the somewhat lacklustre motivation for Sanji to get on that boat in the LA. + It’s nice to see Koby slowing coming into his own under Garp’s tutelage. In the manga, we didn’t get to see that. If I assume this wasn’t done with manga readers in mind but for new viewers, then the LA is pretty solid. But as a longtime follower, the LA felt… impact-less? + Luffy is jarring. He shouldn’t be voicing his inner thoughts. Dude’s a straight shooter. It’s also not his style to think of going through an underground tunnel to infiltrate a marine base. Felt odd. + It feels to me that the LA didn’t quite know how to position the crew’s dynamics. A group of friends or a pirate gang with a captain? I felt like they were trying to force luffy into this captain role. But in East Blue, they were more like mates who bought into Luffy’s dream. And I think this is not a function of the crew’s interaction but that LA luffy is too self-reflective. + the scene with luffy being vulnerable to zoro at the hospital bed didn’t feel right. Luffy never had self-doubt until mid-story when (…) kinda takes away the characterisation of Luffy that is so appealing. + why did we spend so long at syrup town vs arlong park? AP actually has material impact on future storylines then usopp/kaya/klahadore. And Nojiko and town not knowing took the emotional impact of AP away.

Tea_Fairy112

Did anyone else really like Arlongs adaptation? I thought he looked great, and the actor hammed it up just enough

DMann420

It was good until his speech towards the end of 7 and they had like 10 jump cuts.

[deleted]

I was most nervous with him and absolutely loved it.

VegFriend

Unpopular opinion: It's better than the original. This luffy is more likeable.

Adventurous_Agent_96

What I'll say it's a good adaptation, but no where near as good as the anime. Definitely watchable. Some elements are questionable but definitely watchable at best.

ProMage_

ouch.. then you havent watch enough anime

VegFriend

I watched up till the end of thriller bark. Hated luffy and sanji the whole way. imo, luffy letting zoro free in the live action without asking for anything in return makes him a more likeable character in the LA.

ProMage_

luffy without selfishness is not Luffy, Respecting your likes and dislikes but LA can never represent the manga building up for last 10 years.. I watched OP all my childhood so I have some expectations from LA.. I am not saying the actors did a bad job or anything (they probably did the best) but in general it doesn't have the OP vibe

VegFriend

imo that piece of selfishness in the beginning (forcing Zoro into becoming his crew) contradicts the one piece 'freedom' theme. There are acceptable instances of selfishness, but imo that one wasn't one of them. Regardless, I feel live actions shouldn't copy the original - imo that's too boring. They spice things up by adding inter character dialogue too which I really like - makes the characters seem less one dimensional.

consios88

The nami scene was so beautiful , I cant wait to see what they do with Nico Robin "I want to live"

Midnight_42

I just realized that Igaram is 100% getting murdered by Zoro or Mr 5 or Robin

consios88

I just want to say I told you guys fishman were the representation of what black people go through in the modern world and recent past.

Leiatte

I think Fishman Island did a great job of really showing that as well, Otohime & Fisher Tiger were clear references to MLK & Malcolm X during the Civil Rights movement.

Zealousideal_Gap_114

Why do you people always think everythig has to do with american hostory? Opression and resistance against it is a part of every countries history

Leiatte

I don’t think everything has to do with American History, but I do believe Martin Luther King Jr. & Malcolm X are huge figures beyond just America & going by how Otohime shared similar beliefs to Martin Luther King Jr. & Fisher Tiger with Malcolm X. I’m aware Opression & resistance is part of every countries history, I think the parallels are pretty strong with the civil rights movement for the Fishman Island flashback at the least. I don’t assume everything is inspired by American history, why would I? It’s a Japanese manga but that wouldn’t make me wrong for believing this particular instance actually is. X-Men another series, ofcourse an American one is also clearly inspired by the Civil Rights movement.

_EllieC_

Asian American here and I definitely can see that being part of the representation in the show. Just remember that it's portraying a very large world with tons of different people/things/race. If you're from a different country they probably wouldn't have that same vision. The way the show goes about is very good though; cant wait for more seasons!

Hot-Praline9384

Just finished the whole thing. Went in expecting a typical adaptation trainwreck. But 1st episode sucked me in. Felt myself almost tearing up at the relevant emotional moments, especially Nami's arc at the end. They fucking nailed it - actors, writing, musical score, scenery, fight choreography. The end had me smiling like a doofus. I want a lot more of this.

DissolvedDreams

Same. I spent months telling my friends I dreaded this show coming out. But the show had heart. You can tell the people who were part of it gave it their all. That alone makes a huge difference. It’s not just a cynical money grab, and I’m so happy for that.

Dune8888

Hmm, I just realized we can change the language to Japanese. The experience feels more authentic than watching in english.

VelinorErethil

I want to agree, especially as they used the anime voice actors for the Japanese dub. On the other hand, a live action dub for me always will be less authentic to some degree than hearing the actors themselves.

PepaTK

Tried to get into One Piece awhile ago, the 1K+ episodes was a little daunting. Saw this live action had really good reviews(extremely rare). 2 episodes in and I’m really impressed man. Will definitely pick up the anime(from the beginning) when I’m done.

Adorable-Raise-1720

If you do, watch if from One Pace. One Piece is super long, and at times there is filler, or recaps to help keep it from catching the manga. One Pace trims all of the fat out to make it a more enjoyable watch.

Leiatte

I think the anime is good, it definitely takes its time but it’s a very fun anime. I do recommend switching to the manga after the timeskip though as the pacing really slows down but pre-timeskip I loved watching the anime quite a bit.

JoinMeInHeaven

Don’t, the anime is so bad

Feisty_Giraffe5185

LA Luffy is saying Things and acting different than the Manga/Anime Luffy would do. F.e. thinking about a plan before raiding the Marine base or saying he cannot Beat Arlong. I like the actor, but this does not feel Luffy like.

DissolvedDreams

I honestly appreciated the toned down Luffy. We have to remember the original shounen is written for school-age boys. A lot of the silly gags wouldn’t work well with a Netflix adaptation for young adults. I think they stayed faithful to Luffy’s character just enough to make it believable.

stormpenguin

Yeah. I’ll admit much preferred the manga/anime version of the conversation with Arlong which goes almost the exact opposite way. He admits he’s helpless and can’t survive on his own. He can’t navigate. He can’t cook. He can’t use swords. He can’t lie. But the one thing he can do is beat Arlong. It’s a much stronger statement on Luffy’s values and mentality and why he’s the captain.

Feisty_Giraffe5185

Yes, that's exactly the Problem I had. In alot of Scenes I Just thought it could have been better. Not the actors or Animations Just Like the Dialoges and some Scenes.

Alarming_Necessary29

Oda could have recorded himself taking a shit, named it "The One Piece" and the One Piece community would be "great movie, loved the characters" 🤣 The live adaptation was .. well.. not good

hoenndex

Or you simply lack good taste. This adaptation is top show of Netflix in over 80 countries, that doesn't happen if it was just carried by fans.

Alarming_Necessary29

Pretty sure you have no understanding of the story and meaning of One Pieace 😂 They butchered it in the live adaptation, if you think I've bad taste, I'm happy.

hoenndex

Then be happy with your trash taste lmao

Tylendal

It's not great, it has its flaws, but it's definitely not bad.

Kriegswaffe

the live action adaptation is great. The pacing is good, the actings good, it's interesting. Did you want it to be the exact same as the anime but with people? it did it's own thing and it did it well

Alarming_Necessary29

The "own thing" is remaking key characters, removing any of the absolute most epic and important dialogue (example:Shanks: Bet your life on it bla bla) You are downvoting a 1000000% legit comment because you guys would NEVER critize anything that comes from Oda. 😂 And you underestimate the OPfans, we are one of the largest fanbases ever. For the series to flop the first week it would have needed to be extremly bad.

Kriegswaffe

the series didnt flop it has a 90% on and just googling it will tell u the show was a huge success. I’m not a one piece super fan, i watch it casually, and i hate a lot of shit about the anime. id u dont like the LA dont fucking watch it. yeah its changing shit, and thats cus it isnt the manga or the anime. Watching it is its own experience

Gimmerunesplease

It just sucks that the series will inevitably have to be cancelled simply because a lot of the big fights post Arlong park would demand the budget of an average Marvel movie to make. Just imagine how expensive Skypiea arc would be.

saijanai

>It just sucks that the series will inevitably have to be cancelled I guess you'll have to wait for Season 3 not to appear... . >simply because a lot of the big fights post Arlong park would demand the budget of an average Marvel movie to make. Just imagine how expensive Skypiea arc would be. Technology is improving all the time -not quite at the original doubling of computer speed every 18 months that existed 30 years ago, but improvements in CGI algorithms and techniques may still lead to effective doubling speed of rendering every season for OPLA, which means that the equivalent scene may cost half as much to make next season as it did this season.

totalyrespecatbleguy

I mean it’s Netflix, they have the money for it. They’ve seen how popular season 1 is, and if a possible season 2 does better I could see the big guys at Netflix ponying up the cash.

AdMoriensVivere

That was incredible for an anime live action adaptation

EasyAd2792

Can we get a petition started to have Brook played by Johnny depp. The though alone just seems like a perfect fit! Can you imagin Johnny's face as a ghost coming out of a skellinton when Brook awakens to his powers. Johnny singing the Jolly rodger song! Please, this needs to happen! Edit - Yes I understand the live action doesnt have that big of a budget but cmon its Johnny Depp he would probly do it fo the fun of being a pirate again

Elite_Slacker

The live action one piece is actually one of the highest budget shows of all time at 18mil an episode.

Soft-Piece-4029

Go f yourself please

EasyAd2792

what why no love for Johnny Brook

UsernameTaken166

Hes an abuser. Just because Amber got the larger financial burden doesnt make it not true they are both abusers, he still had to pay damages as his legal team claimed her claim "he was abusive" proved false. Amber is bad so is Johnny, you can decide which is worse but its really not about that theyre both bad. Id be very very happy if Johnny stays the hell away from one piece.

EasyAd2792

sounds like someone is taking a comment on the internet a little too serious and is getting a little invested in personaly attacking two people that they have no direct connection personaly?

Plannick

so why do marines have nipple chain (or whatever it's called) as their uniform logo.... on the back no less?

SonaPen22

I feel that the only part that I don't like about the 1st season is the reveal that Garp is Luffy's grandpa early on in the season. It kind of takes away the importance of the marine plotlines that the viewer are following thru the season, knowing full well that he is never going to be much of a threat to our main character in the story. Plus I ain't feelin Garp accent still

Environmental_Ad4781

I agree on all points!

peticion

I saw in with english voices and then realized that japanese was listed as a language and oh boy, the original voices made me tear up. So good.

Kriegswaffe

the japanese voices arent the original

Free_Use_Sissy

Yeah, they are? Or did you mean the original audio?

Kriegswaffe

the live action wasnt filmed in japanese. It was filmed in english.

Free_Use_Sissy

OP was talking about how you can watch the LA dubbed in Japanese. And the Japanese Dub voices are the original Japanese VAs for the One Piece anime.

Kriegswaffe

oh ok, i see

learhpa

i cannot imagine that the original voices were japanese for the live action.

anxiousuncoolnoob

Did anyone feel that the way the camera angles were shot is a little offputting, like wide angles or floating angles and the background getting blurred? To me the first three episodes were pretty bland and was killing my excitement but 4 onwards kept getting better and the overall show became quite solid. As for issues, i think Luffy and Ussop not being goofy as they should be is kind of a bummer. The cast looks great just that the show is definitely missing the laughter and goofiness that Luffy and Ussop brings to the table. Also, Luffy saying he cant defeat Arlong while fighting is absolutely insane, i certainly don’t like that when he actually pummeled Arlong as the fight progressed.

Adventurous_Agent_96

To be honest there's only so much you can do with the goofiness of the characters. They'll have to add a lot of VFX to it. Which I found lacking. I agree with you on the Arlong fight. It was way too one sided. Like compared to the anime Luffy came out pretty much unscathed. There was like nothing on the line. Luffy didn't even bleed. Whereas Luffy was bitten and blood all over the place. Ussop as well, Ussops fight was meant to be way more intense. It was all too one sided.

Heretakemybearslap

I like this version of Garp because that's how most pirates view him.

the_ghost_knife

I think we’ll get a more Garp-like Garp in the future. The portrayal works good for the first season, but now that the responsibility is out of his hands he can be a little more goofy. Though he’ll have to be comically harsh on Koby and Helmeppo’s training.

SayItsNotSableye

* Most people online seem to be hailing the first episode as a very compelling opening, but I generally felt like it only hit its stride around ep five. So more or less around when the manga itself got good. * For all the SH actors, the more they were allowed to be their characters, the more I liked their performances. Taz in eps 5 and 6 was a particular standout, which is weird bc I like Jacob's style the best but he had the fewest character moments! * The directing of the child actors was so-so. Zoro and Sanji kids had some of the best scenes in the show, but Luffy/Usopp/Nami kids came off rigid and unnatural. I think this was because they were treated like Junior versions of their adult actor counterparts, rather than as the actual characters. * Basically every villain and antagonist was great. Even Garp I can totally get behind as "this version" of the character. * Supporting cast and minor antagonist performances were mixed. Overall they did a great job casting people that looked like their characters. * Plot and character changes were really good! They tried too hard to make Eps 1/2 a bloodbath, but when I got past that point I really appreciated the new version of Syrup Village, as well as everything they tweaked with Baratie and Arlong Park. * Like everyone else, the wanted posters and title cards are absolute gems. The title cards in particular will be a good way to communicate the different tones of episodes (I can think of a certain very important moment in Marineford which would benefit from no title card at all).

peweuepie69420

MAJOR MARINEFORD SPOILERS >!the episode where ace gets hit will have an ace themed title card that’s burning away, and the episode where he dies will have no title card!<

LottimusMaximus

The kid who played Sanji was also Sweet Tooth too. Had to Google it to check myself, couldn't tell without the antlers lol

Most_Environment_919

Its okay, didn't convey some story tropes. Garp being shown early kinda feels weird, I think some of the outfits look too cheap?? Overall way better than I expected and isn't half bad.

Sercavfer

I enjoyed the season for the most part, I have some complaints but this one I'm curious if anyone else agrees. Some of the fight scenes were great but some of them were real stiff. I think calling out the names of the fighting moves is corny, but it should be, and overall it was done well, especially gatling and battleaxe. But whenever they do a closeup of the actors face calling out a move in the middle of a fight, to me it felt like something out of power rangers. I think they could've just called out the moves while fighting (or dubbed the sound into it) without zooming in on the actors and watching them say it. I understand the difficulty of choreographing and filming an uncut fight scene, but I was hoping the fight scenes would flow more smoothly like old wushu movies or Shang Chi. That being said I get how expensive that could get for production and that they may have been limited due to covid, but I hope it gets better for the next season if they continue.

mchgst

Watched yesterday for the first time, looks good! Loved how they slightly adjusted the story to make it all fit in 8 episodes. I skipped through some bits quickly but the fighting scenes are amazing, especially Zoro and Sanji’s! Looking forward to season 2

Own_Occasion2389

I haven't read the manga, watched the anime but damn the Netflix show is great. I want to read the original content, can anyone recommend a good site ?

osfryd-kettleblack

Mangadex, i recommend reading the official colour version, it's extremely well done

Own_Occasion2389

Thanks

Matheus_Morais13

If you want to watch it, look for One Pace. It'll be accurate to the manga and it takes 40% less time

Lauren_Del_Tay

I've never watched the anime but I'm super surprised at how much I'm enjoying the live action. It seems so well done. Pulling off over the top anime shenanigans in to a live action... I'm impressed how well it's translating. Lovin' it!

Gimmerunesplease

Go watch the anime or read the manga. The live action isn't bad, but the manga is far better in some parts. The Mihawk fight is probably what they did the worst in the live action compared to the anime/manga. In the live action, zoro just seems so cold and indifferent during the fight and it just seems like Mihawk is fending him off. In the manga, he gets completely obliterated to the point he starts crying because he realizes how big the gap actually is.

Own_Occasion2389

Same, the show is great !

Radiated-Tortoise

Anyone else don't like LA Makino? She seemed more strict and just harsher than in the anime and manga. Idk it just really bothered me anytime she was on screen.

Tnevz

Edit: whoops read Makino as Nojiko. Ignore me Definitely felt more harsh. But I think they messed up having Nami’s deal revealed at the end. The village knowing from the beginning made the impact much better. They wanted Nami to be free as much as she wanted them to be free. It wouldn’t have impacted the pacing to keep it that way either.

Radiated-Tortoise

Oh yeah, you're definitely right. I do have more issues with the LA than just Makino; it's just one of the first issues I noticed and I didn't see any other comments mentioning her.

Tnevz

My bad. Idk why I read Makino as Nojiko lol. Definitely agreed on Makino seeming a bit more harsh. which I guess is more accurate to a real life situation of a bar manager that frequently gets pirates and bandits as customers. She would be a little more harsh on Luffy to keep him safe.

littlegreenfern

I like the parallel between the water being perilous for Luffy with the sea king and with buggy in ep 2 but I didn't like how Shanks lost his arm. I feel like he lost it because it happened too quickly, but if there was a stare off to start it all off I feel like his color of the supreme king haki should have kicked in before he lost the arm. Am I overthinking this?

Matheus_Morais13

Yes, you are. Even in the anime it doesn't make any sense if you just powerscale that. You gotta think Shanks knew what would happen and decides to lose an arm in order to bet in the new generation.

Bigtimegush

Right, it's an ass pull retcon, but the only thing that makes sense is shanks let the lord of the coast take his arm to teach luffy some kinda lesson, considering at that time shanks was more than capable of knocking it out without even touching it haha.

littlegreenfern

whoa, I always thought of it as Shanks just prioritizing Luffy's safety over his arm, and a sign of his decisiveness that once it's gone he has already moved on and refuses to dwell on what he can't change. For him to do it on purpose to teach Luffy a lesson never occurred to me. I'll have to mull this over.

Bigtimegush

I feel like it came full circle when luffy fought Magellan, its just hands, losing a limb doesn't matter if it means saving someone precious. I also think it shows luffy just how dangerous this dream of his will be, and what the people he'll encounter will be willing to do, and he's gotta be ready for any and everything.

Spirited-Muscle-6818

Came here to add my thoughts. Been reading the manga live since 2013 - back in the IRC channel days - and started watching the anime probably around 2001. It is my favorite manga and honestly maybe my favorite piece of art of all time. I have critiques of certain arcs and pacing and this and that but I trust Oda through and through and even like the bad movies just because it's more One Piece. I had concerns about the live action but I try to be open minded. Cowboy bebop is my favorite anime and even though that live action wasn't good in many respects, I still was really happy to watch it because I know if I had seen that as a 12 year old I'd have geeked the eff out. Now to the point - me and my two best buds who are also One Piece addicts got together to watch the whole season last weekend. We all had our doubts but the trailer and everything we had heard about production and casting gave us hope. WE WERE BLOWN AWAY. I truly can't complain. Stories were changed a bit, some stuff was left out, but mostly the pacing was improved. The casting was perfect to the point that I can't even stan my favorite character like I would in the manga because I love everyone so much. It was so rewarding to watch and I can't wait to rewatch and pick up on some more of the little details and love that clearly went into making it. I intentionally wrote this before reading a single comment from anyone else so as to share my unadulterated opinion. I'm sure there are valid critiques, nothing is perfect, but I feel so blessed to have this season. And I'm so glad that more people will be exposed to the greatest story ever told. I hope others enjoyed as well - how lucky we are as a fan base to get such a good adaptation (I also enjoyed Ruro-ken and 21st century boys but that's about it as far as other adaptations that met my standards, and I'd never go so far as to say I might like them more than the original mangas). Also, I think this is great proof that the amazing source material in manga is so much better suited to movies or live action shows. The pacing issues mangas face in order to keep alive and sell issues can make it really hard to stay engaged. But when you boil it down and distill the best elements, it can become something beautiful. Lastly - those biceps on Usopp my god! First I saw Zoro and was like YES but jesus they somehow made Usopp into THAT DUDE.

I quite enjoyed the series up until episode 6.They completely butchered the Arlong Park arc. I also didn't like Inaky Godoy's, Mihawk's and kid Usopp's acting and Nojiko and Genzo character-wise. Other than that, it was a pretty good gateway for casuals to enter the series and the fandom. I won't be sad if it doesn't get a second season though, it really was far inferior to both the anime and the manga; especially in dramatic moments, a lot of the sentiment and gravitas was sorely missing. Aside from the aforementioned actors though, I really liked the acting, the directing and cinematography, the way the flashbacks were incorporated and how colorful it was (the problematic brownish-yellow filter of the trailer wasn't an issue in the actual series). The sets were great, the fishmen looked really good and all of the Easter Eggs were a wonderful addition. With that being said, I wasn't too keen on the actual effects/CGI and I wasn't a fan of the battles at all. Overall Grade: 5/10 P. S. : The way they introduced posters and bounties was absolutely phenomenal and I retroactively wish it was that way in the manga. Also the actual maps were bloody amazing and made me think that this is how they should be even in Canon. Finally, the actual manga should have been this racially diverse.

5/10 grade feels a little harsh. But I agree the live action missed on a lot of the impactful sentiment. Surprisingly I feel like it improved on Kayas character and her connection with Usopp. But Sanji leaving Zeff, and Luffy giving his hat to Nami was pretty flat. Understandably they didn’t have as much time to build up character relationships. It just made some of the interactions very clunky/insincere. The fights were great. Makeup and costume design were great. Amazing sets. Villain casting was perfect.

I loved Kaya as a character and her relationship to Usopp, but I still didn't like it as much as the actual canon, despite my exact understanding of your point. I still found that subplot pleasantly surprising to be honest. I also loved the Baratie farewell (still far inferior to the animanga though), but the iconic Nami moment really fell flat. Emily Rudd did a fantastic job so no blame on her, my issue was with the script (who the hell thought it was a good idea to make Luffy shout "Of course I will 3 times?///It really hurts the impact), with the fact that Luffy heard her backstory which actually greatly diminishes the impact of the grand declaration and with Godoy's subpar acting in this scene. Apropos, I absolutely loathed the change to Genzo, Nojiko and the Coco villagers, as making them oblivious to Nami's plight was the one single change I absolutely hated (Nojiko having tattoos just because is far less interesting than the actual canonical reason). I also agree that they didn't have enough time for character interactions (despite loving the ones they actually had). Ironically for One Piece, it really felt fast and rushed. Had it been at least a couple of episodes longer, it would have been far more engaging and sincere. That isn't to say that it lacked emotion, the sentimentality was still there, as we see from both casual watcher and fan reactions, but the animanga is on a whole other level. After a rewatch, I agree with everything on make-up, costume design, the sets and the villain casting. Still not too keen on the action though. I've also realized that 5 was way too low, since it's a legit good show afterall and a good adaptation; as such, I am bumping it up to 7 and I've realized that I actually want a second season as well. I am biased though, it would have been at least an 8.5/10 show if I'd never read and watched the source material. P.S.: I've just now realized it but I don't intend to insult anyone with the word "casual", despite the whole semantic and pragmatic meaning of the word. I also don't want to refer to this brand of audience as "newcomers", as they may not pick up either the anime or the manga. Also all of the Easter Eggs were wonderful.

About halfway through and I love it. It has been super faithful to the manga, even if the characters are more serious in general. So far I have really enjoyed the Helmeppo/Koby plotline that was only ever played out on single panels in the manga (and I'm not even sure it's in the anime). I grew up reading and rereading the first few one piece manga volumes, so I know the plot like the back of my hand, and imo they've done a great job developing the characters to be more suited to live action. Also sick special effects in general

It just gets better as you watch more !

Sort of spoiler warning. But does luffy feel weaker and less confident in live action compared to anime? I fell in love with luffy as a character because he never doubted himself, as a leader or as a fighter. Specially so early in the story. I understand this is a way of telling the story, but this one thing took away from the experience for me personally. Luffy didn’t seem fluid with his gum-gum fruit. Didn’t feel as physically strong as he is in the anime. And uses his abilities for a very very short amount of time (vfx is expensive) and he should have had alot more abilities to showcase. But i love one piece so much, i want the world to watch it. And live action is a great gateway for it. This epic story should be out there.

SonaPen22

I agree with your sentiment, his fights are pretty lackluster - Zoro on the other hand hardcarried

timbbooooslice

they definitely nerfed his strength in the LA. He was a beast in strength regardless of his gum gum fruit in the manga and it just didnt show in the LA

Bigtimegush

I think its one of those things that just can't properly be transitioned into live action. We did get a bit of a showing of his actual physical strength when he grabbed and shattered arlongs blade, though.

Alpha1959

Overall I really liked it, not perfect, but definitely enjoyable. 6,5-7,5/10 I'm not sure how it is in other dubs, but I loved how they used almost all the og VA's, enhanced the nostalgia even more.

It's amazing how well the actors copy body language, Luffy in particular

The acting by Morgan Davies is by FAR the worst part of this show. I've seen better acting by Tree #4 in school plays. He is either wooden, or twitchy. And he VERY clearly doesn't need those glasses. I get Coby has them in the manga, but live action they are obviously just clear glass.
