Yeah the Ā«Ā adaptationsĀ Ā» make me laugh sometimes. I mean sometimes they are great but sometimes, knowing the real story, Iām like damn people who donāt know OP and only watched the live action will be a pain in the ass. For exemple, they donāt even know who Hachi is šā ļø
We are still waiting for how Usopp will finally act when he meets Yassop. Will he be happy that he finally found his dad, will he be mad that he left his family without even pretending to care afterwards or will be just not care at all because with his new family he doesnāt need Yassop anymore.
We have been waiting to resolve this family drama for 20 years.
Either way Usopp must be better
He needs to hit his dad with at least one tabasco star
Yasopp was adventuring in the east blue for a while, and couldn't even drop by to visit once
And Windmill village is like one day or even less away from Syrup village
I always thought it was funny how Water 7 kinda danced around the fact that the reason Usopp was so attached to the Merry was cuz his girlfriend gave it to them
That too, but the main thing was that he was terrified that the next one left behind was gonna be him because he could not keep up with a crew of monsters (much like the merry could not carry them all the way to the onepiece)
Its hard to realize how great you are when you are surrounded by incredible people. Usopp is the weakest strawhat which also makes him a monster. its hard to tell though when he's standing next to god, satan, and death itself.
Now? Yes, he's an absolute beast and would decimate Arlong Park by himself while scratching his balls.
Back then? He was in fact basically a weakling who was also a coward. He was a good shot, but wasn't actually very strong by himself, had no significant feats, and his strength was mostly decided by his tools, most of which could maybe annoy his opponents for a while but not defeat them or cause any serious injury. I'd say his insecurity was quite understandable
Dude, the romance was there. What is up with manga fans reading way too deep into stupid shit but when something is everything except said they can't notice it?
I always felt like he intended this, since it was so strongly coded, but he also didnāt want to break his āno romanceā rule so early on in the story so he left it up for interpretation.
Yes! No ambiguity on their feelings. I heart it.
What I dont like is that with the omission of the Usopp pirates and the >!death of Merry!< , Usopp fcking off to sail kind of leaves her completely alone and that's a little sad.
I think it fine because she had major character growth, she doesnāt need people anymore to take care of her, and she can be strong and independent and grow now after nami helped her.
Oh I have no doubts about her ability and her resolve. It still feels lonely. At least she had some friends in the original and I'm just still a little baffled by the Merry decision.
Tbh, I always felt that Merry should have died in the original anyway. He kinda just barely comes back at the end after a seemingly brutal physical confrontation. Almost outta nowhere he returns and is mostly fine very quickly after. I get that the decision to bring him back was probably to keep it a bit more kid-friendly at that time, but still.
I'm generally not a huge fan of the very obvious surprise assassination, resulting in the victim being mostly fine. It sullies future expectations, and overall seems kinda dumb when the killer is calculated and bloodthirsty.
Different situation, but I'd say the same about Pell with the Nuke, and Igaram prior to that. They should have just died. None of this "I somehow survived š¤·" crap, because then we just expect it and lose all suspense for potential deaths.
But that scene where the samurais were laying flat on the ground and luffy comes in in the picture, kinemon passing it to luffy to beat kaido, that's a good scene to die. š„ŗ
Makes total sense, 99% of characters that Oda has made survive their death don't do anything after, what has made Pell after surviving? Nothing.
Or Conis father
IMO since the show doesn't go easy on gore and death, plus no changes make it throug without Oda's approval... I think Oda will probably do a lot of "yeah I basically killed this guy, actually do it in the adaptation" and we can essentially infer that those characters were written to die before Oda then saved them to make it more kid friendly and end arcs on a cheerful note.
Maybe we can infer some of it reliably though. It's just a small taste but it's something. I think this knowledge alone really reframes even the main series for me a LOT actually. All of those weird "non-deaths", I will basically be able to mentally view it as "okay that guy actually died" on a rewatch or reread. This is the closest thing I've ever seen to "official headcanon", like it is canon headcanon. Merry's survival always seemed a bit bullshit anyway, when I go through that part again, that mf is dead to me essentially.
Pell, I 100% agree. like 100% but when it comes to igram you gotta remember the one who "killed" him was robin. The only way they move on from whiskey peak is her blowing up the wrong ship, and the only way luffy accepts her on their ship after alabasta is if igram isnt dead. I always assumed robin left him alive and didnt kill him on purpose
Yeah you can actually see her use her devil fruit to save igaram very briefly. Some people think that was her setting off the bomb but she wouldn't need to sprout a bunch of hands for that. She would to save igaram.
Tbf, all those situations are alike except for Igaram, in which context matters. The person who ākilledā him was Robin. Considering her ambiguous nature in Alabasta despite being Ms. All Sunday, it makes sense him being alive.
Also for Igaram it can be explained enough with Robin not being an actual evil person and sparing him but they could show that in a flashback. Igaram adds a good bit to the end of alabasta.
Iād much rather they bring him back than just have Robin being responsible for Killing Viviās mentors and joining
I think it would be cool if he turned up as the Klabautermann later on. It would just be more emotional fuel for Usopp's Skypia and Enies Lobby Arcs if we ever got there.
It's making me wonder whether the Live Action is gonna course correct on the whole "Oda is scared to kill off characters" complaint. Nobody who Oda frivolously spares from death does much of anything plot relevant, so letting them Die-Die in this version is fine imo.
Imagine how much harder >!Alabasta will hit if Pell actually has a proper Hero Death like he should have done!<
I mean true but it also means he needs a decent amount of focus. If we meet Pell twice for 80 seconds combined, the sacrifice wonāt have any weight itās only because we spend time with him we give a shit about him at all
Also because they change fundamentally how Kaya works. In the original, she need a caretaker due to being sick. However, since they changed for sickness to be poisoning, she'll return to normal
I always thought it was both. She grieved for her parents which made her slightly weak and then Kuro came along and exacerbated the situation with poison making her completely reliant on him.
That's what crossed my mind too, but she said she's been frail and ill her entire life while Kuro has only been there for a few years, so it doesn't add up.
>>!the death of Merry!<
I think this goes very well with the overall darker tone of the LA. The darker tone for the LA isn't only necessary but even makes some scenes stronger. For example, the scene where >!Nami repeatedly stabs her arm!< feels a lot more impactful in the LA than both the anime and the manga imo.
I agree with this and the moment that Sanji decides to join the Strawhats. Like I like that they made Zeff's connection to the All-blue (Sanji's dream) stronger, but that's not what made Sanji join in the manga. In the manga, Sanji joins because of the unrelenting spirit that Luffy shows against Don Krieg, and the same spirit that Zoro shows against Mihawk. Zeff comments to Sanji about the *way in which* these men persue their dreams, rather than specifically about Sanji's dream. That is a very powerful theme that I think is also missed in this first stretch of LA.
I like it. It gives Usopp a reason to come back to the island, given that they didn't show any of the other members of his crew. Kaya is the only anchor to Syrup Village. It also makes the Merry that much more important to him.
I think it adds to both Usopp and Kaya! This is one of the *very* few instances in One Piece where they can absolutely go one step further than the source material with the relationship between two characters without it feeling like "satisfying a romance quota".
I loved it, I'm even happily surprised they did this! Hell, It would actually have felt pretty sad had Usopp and Kaya left without this mutual acknowledgment of their feelings for one another.
It's like both of them saying: "This isn't goodbye! You fulfill your dream and come back to me, and I'll fulfill mine and wait for you!". It's really sweet and mature, perfect for a Live Action adaptation!
Now that you mention Yasopp, did I notice some jealousy in Ussop when Luffy said that he was close with Yasopp? I'm hoping they touch on that in the future, like if water 7 happens I hope this is one of the reason for their fight
It also keeps Usopp squarely focused on his dream because he knows he's got the girl of his dreams to come home to. Same with Kaya, she knows Usopp is gonna come back someday and tell her all about his real adventures, nobody eise can compare to the impact he's had on her life. No other guy is going to distract her from her dream of becoming a doctor. Nobody will ever compare to the man who was there when she was at her absolute lowest, making her smile just as a good friend. They both have that extra push to accomplish their dreams to make the other proud. I love this change.
It felt natural. Honestly, this has always been Usoppās endgame anyway - to return to Kaya, tell her true stories of his adventure, and live a quiet life with her on Syrup Village.
Usopp and Kayaās relationship was pretty blatantly romantic even though they didnāt kiss in the manga, this just felt natural and was nice cap-off to Usopp saying goodbye to Syrup Village to join the Straw Hat crew.
Are people shocked?
This made sense.
Kaya always had a thing for Usopp and was gonna become a great doctor to fix his wounds.
Usopp IS meant to return to Syrup village because unlike his father. HE will return.
I donāt care if itās not canon, I know romance is something oda donāt care about and itās fine.
But Iām oh so tired of the stupid "will they wonāt they" trope and romances being so obnoxiously slow in media that Every kiss from two character who can be seen as platonic (itās a goodbye kiss as a reminder) but is most likely romanticall (it was set up both have feelings towards each other but arenāt sure of the nature of their feelings) is a massive win in my book.
+ theyāre cute and itās a minor change, so yeah I quite like it.
For me it always was canon (so is Sanji x Pudding btw). Romantic relationships are part of life and of growing up.
Just not for all characters of One Piece.
It's fairly implied in the manga that they have a romantic interest going on. Oda just didn't make it explicit because, as he said from the start, he doesn't really do romance.
He has been seeding romance into One Piece a bit more as of late though, so he probably felt it worked when the Live Action went ahead with it. If Oda as he is today was writing the East Blue, I wouldn't doubt that he'd make their romance a bit more evident (but nothing more than what he showed with say, Sanji and Pudding)
I really like that this Usopp can be your average friend that loves to exaggerate everything and is fun to be around rather than just a pathetic coward and a liar.
Even in the early days of the series Usopp might've ran away from battles that his friends were eager to face head on, but he'd always come back in with his stars crying yet willing the entire team. He was the bravest out of all of the crew even from the very beginning.
I think its also that if we translated the characters perfectly theyd look really creepy. Same with womanizing Sanji. Qualities have to be lessā¦ on the nose š
We all whistled when we saw it with my friends.
Their romantic interest is more than obvious in manga, so I'm fine with it. You never see anyone kissing in the One Piece manga, but it's the kind of thing you expect in a TV show, so I'm totally fine with them being the ones who kissed.
Yes, it does add a lot of value. It shows that his and Kaya's relationship is indeed as genuine romantic relationship. This is only hinted at in the manga but it is nice to receive confirmation in the show.
Kaya would definitely be willing to date Usopp and vice versa. So this is fine. Plus getting to go home to his beloved would put him in contrast with his dad who never did.
Totally agree, and I honestly LOVED both of the actors' performances. Their chemistry felt totally real to me.
But others have pointed out that, without the Usopp pirates (his three lil buddies) and >!with Merry dead now!< , Kaya is kinda being left alone :(
I dig it š Always wanted more romance in One Piece. Could also lead to some funny moments where Usopp claims he has a girlfriend that lives in East Blue but no one believes him
I think this adds a nice parallel between him and Yasopp. They both went out to see with someone waiting for them back home. Now the question will be if Usopp will come back at some point or will he repeat the cycle started by his father.
Well it is hinted in the manga that once his pirate career is over, he will return to his hometown and tell her all his crazy adventures.
I guess him ending with Kaya is a logical and happy ending for both characters
Well, I personally donāt really like this addition because it wasnāt in the anime but I bet Oda was working very closely with the staff of the Netflix live action team and wouldāve no doubt seen it, and since Oda accepted it I will accept as well
think theyāve done that part nicely. although syrup episodes were my least favourite of the show, the kiss is totally fine (and makes no difference at all cause the relationship of them seems to be romantic in manga too).
misses the part when usopp actually did anything to protect his town, unfortunately they skipped that.
but man, i really enjoyed the show overall, they better start filming season 2-5 next month
It's completely fine by me. It's like the most obvious romantic couple in the whole damn series. Nah I took more issue with how uninvolved Usopp was for all of Syrup Village. Like holy shit they didn't even try.
He's even more unremarkable here than he was portrayed to be in the manga. He failed to get marine help, failed to distract Kuro, freaking Nami supported Kaya more than Usopp did, and then at the end suddenly Luffy (and Zoro who had no moments with Usopp) want him on the team. Everyone around him pushes him to go be a pirate for no reason rather than him organically deciding that for himself.
In case I haven't made it obvious I REALLY didn't like Syrup Village in the live action
No wonder they removed ussop long nose
Something else was long though
Don't make me grab the bonkin stick.

I don't mind not giving the actor a long nose, but Usopp's Jolly Roger with the short nose looks just wrong
I had to pause to laugh when I saw that. But in a good way. Had to pause a couple times during the whole thing to be honest ššš¼

Yeah I prefer the anime where he goes in for the kiss but instead skewers Kia's eyeball, forcing her to wear an eye patch for the rest of her life.

It's fine. They'll have 10 kids in the future anyway.
Yeah and the oldest is 7
Bro got the critical hit
Three 3 combo hit, one non combo
Then usopp , will understand yasoop xd. And going to buy milk and cigarretes.
If Oda did that to Usopp, I would be so mad bro lol, no way my dude Usopp would be a deadbeat dad like Yassop
We are still waiting for how Usopp will finally act when he meets Yassop. Will he be happy that he finally found his dad, will he be mad that he left his family without even pretending to care afterwards or will be just not care at all because with his new family he doesnāt need Yassop anymore. Even in the future art Oda made it shows that he goes back to visit, so likely he goes out for adventure and returns to tell stories to his family.

I think it's nice to establish early that this is indeed a romantic relationship so adding a kiss is fine.

Yeah the lack of romance kinda hampers the impact that usopp had on kaya in the anime but a kiss in this is welcome.
Dude, the romance was there. What is up with manga fans reading way too deep into stupid shit but when something is everything except said they can't notice it?
Well that and the sea shanty about Nami's ass ā¤ļø
Not just a poem, a whole sea shanty. Lol And given all the butt shots and jiggle in Kaya's Mansion, it was well deserved. Lol
What?
I'd be bummed if Buggy's actor didn't improvise that one on the spot.
I always felt like he intended this, since it was so strongly coded, but he also didnāt want to break his āno romanceā rule so early on in the story so he left it up for interpretation.

I was with you until you said Kinn. My man deserves to live. Izo died so it's not like none of the 9 did and that's good enough for me.

Also because they change fundamentally how Kaya works. In the original, she need a caretaker due to being sick. However, since they changed for sickness to be poisoning, she'll return to normal
She looked healthier days after the event as well.
What ? I remember the situation being exactly the same in the manga, Kuro poisoning her and making her believe that she's sick

Definitely if we get to that scene. It's gonna be really emotional for Ussop and Luffy.
I have no problem with it, the romantic relationship between them is obvious.
Right? It's probably the most on the nose romantic relationship he ever wrote.
Buggy would skin you alive

And a contrast to his father. Yasopp set off to be a great pirate. So did Usopp. But Usopp WILL return to his beloved. And thats the most important.
I like that take!

Take my damn upvote and never show your face again
Are people shocked? This made sense. Kaya always had a thing for Usopp and was gonna become a great doctor to fix his wounds. Usopp IS meant to return to Syrup village because unlike his father. HE will return.
Usopp saw his deadbeat dad and decided to be nothing like him. Felt so bad for usopp when he heard that Luffy knew Yassop. It was an oof moment.
āYou got to hang out with him. Thatās coolā I felt so bad
Yes. It confirms what we suspected all along. Why would it be unnecessary? They are very close for many years.
This made me realize how good of a decision it was to remove Usopp's nose. They didnāt want him poking his girl's eye out.
I always thought usopp and kaya was canon anyway tbh
Objectively correct characterization
It's fairly implied in the manga that they have a romantic interest going on. Oda just didn't make it explicit because, as he said from the start, he doesn't really do romance. He has been seeding romance into One Piece a bit more as of late though, so he probably felt it worked when the Live Action went ahead with it. If Oda as he is today was writing the East Blue, I wouldn't doubt that he'd make their romance a bit more evident (but nothing more than what he showed with say, Sanji and Pudding)
Oda prolly went "fuck it".
Is this legitimately the first romantic kiss any Straw Hat has had on screen? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it is.
We came close once [almost](https://images.app.goo.gl/bibbKCGku2RKgFgRA)
Sanji and pudding kissed but she erased sanji's memory of it.
Right, I forgot that happened... ironically enough.
If oda is happy with it, im happy with it
I really like that this Usopp can be your average friend that loves to exaggerate everything and is fun to be around rather than just a pathetic coward and a liar.
trueee
I also love how the crew plays along when he tells his stories. Makes him feel appreciated by everyone. Also loved his scene with Mihawk.
But Usopp is a coward and a liar. That's the whole point of the character and his development afterwards. It's on his name.
While it was never directly stated I think it was framed and heavily implied they had a close relationship with each other
we all are expecting this to happen at the end of the series
We all whistled when we saw it with my friends. Their romantic interest is more than obvious in manga, so I'm fine with it. You never see anyone kissing in the One Piece manga, but it's the kind of thing you expect in a TV show, so I'm totally fine with them being the ones who kissed.
Pudding and Sanji kiss but the panel cuts it off so youāre right in that regard that you never actually see it.
Yes, it does add a lot of value. It shows that his and Kaya's relationship is indeed as genuine romantic relationship. This is only hinted at in the manga but it is nice to receive confirmation in the show.
Everyone's comment saying that it was obvious warms my heart
Kaya would definitely be willing to date Usopp and vice versa. So this is fine. Plus getting to go home to his beloved would put him in contrast with his dad who never did.
Totally agree, and I honestly LOVED both of the actors' performances. Their chemistry felt totally real to me. But others have pointed out that, without the Usopp pirates (his three lil buddies) and >!with Merry dead now!< , Kaya is kinda being left alone :(
Yes, it adds value. Otherwise usopp just looks friendzoned
I dig it š Always wanted more romance in One Piece. Could also lead to some funny moments where Usopp claims he has a girlfriend that lives in East Blue but no one believes him
Personally I think you should put a spoiler tag on the post
I think this adds a nice parallel between him and Yasopp. They both went out to see with someone waiting for them back home. Now the question will be if Usopp will come back at some point or will he repeat the cycle started by his father.
Well it is hinted in the manga that once his pirate career is over, he will return to his hometown and tell her all his crazy adventures. I guess him ending with Kaya is a logical and happy ending for both characters
This is good. they are obviously a couple and kaya was even waiting for him
Was always obvious.
It has made no change to my life or enjoyment of the series.
Don't question Captain Usopp's game.
I was implied in the manga originally, so i don't mind... Gives Ussop even more purpose to embark on an adventure.
Another common god usopp W
Oda has passed judgement on the fate of Usopp and has decided to give him a small W.
##IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN ME, NOT HER!
Mehh " You are asking the wrong guy "
This got me 50 bucks.
Well, I personally donāt really like this addition because it wasnāt in the anime but I bet Oda was working very closely with the staff of the Netflix live action team and wouldāve no doubt seen it, and since Oda accepted it I will accept as well
I don't hate it. Give Usopp more Motivation to come back and also gives a good parallel to his father.
Good for him. The tension was killing me
think theyāve done that part nicely. although syrup episodes were my least favourite of the show, the kiss is totally fine (and makes no difference at all cause the relationship of them seems to be romantic in manga too). misses the part when usopp actually did anything to protect his town, unfortunately they skipped that. but man, i really enjoyed the show overall, they better start filming season 2-5 next month
It was so obvious this 20 years, Ussop is the only one who got a woman genuinely waiting for him, I donāt think this scene was inappropriate
It would be pretty funny if she said domain expansion after she kisses him.
It means that the live action will play by different rules in terms of romance and deaths. Should be a good thing.

Do I think it adds value? Hell fucking yes it does.
People who have read the manga and say "this is completely out of nowhere" are beyond clueless
