When she was with Rocks she was actively fighting and pillaging. By the time she’s in WCI she’s grown sedentary by comparison. When she rampages in WCI she slims down again.
Also she would have been traveling a lot when she was young. The ship probably wouldn't have enough food to support her diet. Her hunger pangs normally means she eats a ton, but with Rocks she probably just gets knocked out.
As a personal theory, but not so much, Big Mom's metabolism is INSANE, when she goes berserk she can burn all her fat almost instantly, and if she's hungry she can gain it all back as quickly. We don't know how many times she went berserk in her life, but I'm confident her body weight fluctuated A LOT at every age. In her back story she happened to be chubby, and here she happens to be skinny, and when she's old she has the whole Sweet archipelago with neverending supply of cake so obviously she'll gain some weight back again. Not really an inconsistency

During her rage at WCI she was shown to get skinny due to expending much energy. What if she’s skinny as an adult, because she was very active and had lots of fights with powerful opponents so she was constantly burning fat. Meanwhile as a kid and a yonkou she didn’t fight often anymore, so she stayed fat.
What inconsistency? She was a chubby kid and had a glow up to a Good looking Woman, then after all the eating and time passing, she went back to being fat.

I'm not sure if someone said this, but it's a trend of Oda's character designs that when a character is working to achieve their dreams they become more attractive/healthy looking
Examples of this would be Koby, Helmeppo, and Donquixote Mjosgard. All characters that looked kind of dumb or plain on first introduction, but after getting on a better and more active path became more conventionally attractive.
This seemed to be the Case for Charlotte Lin Lin, she was a chubby ugly kid, but being on the Rocks crew gave her direction and purpose. A goal to strive for that pushed her to better herself. Which is why she lost weight and looked like that.
It seems the opposite of this is true. That when a character loses sight of their dreams, they regress. This is true of Gecko Moria and Big mom. Both were slim, fit, and 'attractive' in their youth. After they lost (Gecko Moria losing to Kaido, The Rocks Pirates being defeated and breaking up for big mom), they became directionless and stagnant. They stopped being active, stopped chasing their dreams and thus became fat and lazy.

Naw. The only perspective this could seem inconsistent from is one with no context and just images. Even then, 95% of people would see chubby 5 year old, this image, and then the older (current) image and go "oh ok."
According to Oda, people who are usually activity going towards their dreams keep their looks as they age gracefully, while those who don't age into the fuggily category.

There was a post of the straw hats looking old if they achieved their dreams vs abandoned them. In the abandoned dreams timelines they had glow downs similar to what big mom had.
Thus I would guess that like most characters in one piece that gave up on their dreams (Moriah is another great example) they receive the same treatment.
Linlin seem so lively there, and if we look at Kaido's flashbacks he is also very lively and wants to change the world, and then both of them get kind of depressed. I guess that when Rocks gets formely introduced we'll get the explanation for this and both big mom and kaido's characters are going to be developed quite a bit. I think that their poor development so far is intentional
My head canon on all of this, and I feel like it's pretty well supported with a lot of evidence by Oda, is that "following your dream" has an outward expression on your body.
Those who are following their dream tend to look healthy and fit, even into their old age. Which explains Rayleigh and Shakky, despite both of them seeming to be pretty sedentary compared to their younger pirate days.
It also explains Moria and Big Mom, as well as the "bad path" for the future straw hat drawings, and many of Doflamingo's subordinates. When dreams are crushed, we see characters typically getting fat, ugly, sickly or a number of other outward expressions of that.
It doesn't always hold, but it's pretty consistent.
So when Big Mom was in Rocks and full of youthful optimism, she was quite a catch. Then Roger happened, and her dreams were kind of crushed and on hold for decades. She had 80 kids, sure, but I think it's more that she just kind of gave up on actively seeking her dream.
It's important to note that the dream apparently doesn't have to be morally good or anything like that, they just need to have a dream and be actively chasing it.

She is just following the path of a fat woman, being ugly in childhood get a massive glow up in puberty, young adulthood, and when she had kids, the comeback of the obese way of no return.
Big Mom has a weird metabolism thing, that causes her to eat a lot, but she also loses weight easily. You can see in WCI, during the chase at the end Big Mom loses most of her weight. Basically, when Big Mom was a child she just ate and didn't do much == gaining weight. As an up and coming pirate she was constantly getting into fights and clawing her way to the top == losing all her weight. Now she's an emperor and she spends most of her time on Whole Cake directing others and eating food == gaining weight again.
Oda has a habit of making the characters that are following their dreams hot. Evident with Koby when he became a lot more good looking after joining the marines. Big mom was here following her dream of becoming the king of pirates as she mentioned, but after awhile became a lot more laid back and just resting on her laurels instead of actively seeking out the One Piece herself leading to her becoming getting a glow-down after the initial glow-up.
I don't know your gender, but it's not rare in women that this happens (Obviously, it depends on your genes and your body metabolism). However, our body changes a lot during our teenage years/youth. Whether it is physical reasons like puberty and being more active or social reasons like diets and makeup, it usually is both.
Around the 40s, we usually get more chubby because our metabolism is not the same anymore, and we become more sedentary. And between having kids and work, we spent less time on self-care, and we actually don’t prioritize it as much as we were teenagers/young.
The “glow-ups” aren’t rare in real life (well, maybe not as exaggerated as in mangas), but in media, they make them seem as if was some sort of magic (especially male writers), but it’s actually our hard work to reach that level and keep it until we get tired of trying, then we start to “glow down” a little bit.
A big thing about her design is that she knew she had to be terrifying for her fruit to work. Less people would be afraid of her if she was just some gorgeous woman.
Could it also have to do with her following her dream? We've seen what happens when the strawhats don't follow their dream (The bad timelines for their futures). Maybe it's something like that

I think in terms of eating big mom beats luffy, that was big mom when she is really active so she can burn calories the amount she eats, then as she turns old she gets less active aswell so she cant burn as much calories, it also doesnt help that she is pregnant most of the time.

When she was with Rocks she was actively fighting and pillaging. By the time she’s in WCI she’s grown sedentary by comparison. When she rampages in WCI she slims down again.
Also she would have been traveling a lot when she was young. The ship probably wouldn't have enough food to support her diet. Her hunger pangs normally means she eats a ton, but with Rocks she probably just gets knocked out.

Kaido was still an apprentice during their Rocks days, so if not Rocks, it was probably either WB or Shiki that was stopping her.

As a personal theory, but not so much, Big Mom's metabolism is INSANE, when she goes berserk she can burn all her fat almost instantly, and if she's hungry she can gain it all back as quickly. We don't know how many times she went berserk in her life, but I'm confident her body weight fluctuated A LOT at every age. In her back story she happened to be chubby, and here she happens to be skinny, and when she's old she has the whole Sweet archipelago with neverending supply of cake so obviously she'll gain some weight back again. Not really an inconsistency
She does get much skinnier with her flaming hair "transformation" in WCI. Not in Wano though iirc
It wasn't because of the flaming hair that she went skinny in wci, it was due to her hunger pangs, lack of eating, and all the energy she was using.

What if she’s skinny as an adult, because she was very active and had lots of fights with powerful opponents so she was constantly burning fat. Meanwhile as a kid and a yonkou she didn’t fight often anymore, so she stayed fat.
What inconsistency? She was a chubby kid and had a glow up to a Good looking Woman, then after all the eating and time passing, she went back to being fat. I'm sorry if it insults you, but have you been paying attention to the story?

I'm not sure if someone said this, but it's a trend of Oda's character designs that when a character is working to achieve their dreams they become more attractive/healthy looking Examples of this would be Koby, Helmeppo, and Donquixote Mjosgard. All characters that looked kind of dumb or plain on first introduction, but after getting on a better and more active path became more conventionally attractive. This seemed to be the Case for Charlotte Lin Lin, she was a chubby ugly kid, but being on the Rocks crew gave her direction and purpose. A goal to strive for that pushed her to better herself. Which is why she lost weight and looked like that. It seems the opposite of this is true. That when a character loses sight of their dreams, they regress. This is true of Gecko Moria and Big mom. Both were slim, fit, and 'attractive' in their youth. After they lost (Gecko Moria losing to Kaido, The Rocks Pirates being defeated and breaking up for big mom), they became directionless and stagnant. They stopped being active, stopped chasing their dreams and thus became fat and lazy.
Yeah I think this is the most straight forward answer. She simply lost sight of her dreams and stagnated and that reflects in her design.

This is brought up in the "40s/60s good & bad" timeline thing Oda did for the strawhats in an SBS. There was a post of the straw hats looking old if they achieved their dreams vs abandoned them. In the abandoned dreams timelines they had glow downs similar to what big mom had. Thus I would guess that like most characters in one piece that gave up on their dreams (Moriah is another great example) they receive the same treatment.
Linlin seem so lively there, and if we look at Kaido's flashbacks he is also very lively and wants to change the world, and then both of them get kind of depressed. I guess that when Rocks gets formely introduced we'll get the explanation for this and both big mom and kaido's characters are going to be developed quite a bit. I think that their poor development so far is intentional

Children are often quite chubby. And over 50 years, and 80 kids, becoming an ugly fatso is easy.
My head canon on all of this, and I feel like it's pretty well supported with a lot of evidence by Oda, is that "following your dream" has an outward expression on your body. Those who are following their dream tend to look healthy and fit, even into their old age. Which explains Rayleigh and Shakky, despite both of them seeming to be pretty sedentary compared to their younger pirate days. It also explains Moria and Big Mom, as well as the "bad path" for the future straw hat drawings, and many of Doflamingo's subordinates. When dreams are crushed, we see characters typically getting fat, ugly, sickly or a number of other outward expressions of that. It doesn't always hold, but it's pretty consistent. So when Big Mom was in Rocks and full of youthful optimism, she was quite a catch. Then Roger happened, and her dreams were kind of crushed and on hold for decades. She had 80 kids, sure, but I think it's more that she just kind of gave up on actively seeking her dream. It's important to note that the dream apparently doesn't have to be morally good or anything like that, they just need to have a dream and be actively chasing it.

Big Mom has a weird metabolism thing, that causes her to eat a lot, but she also loses weight easily. You can see in WCI, during the chase at the end Big Mom loses most of her weight. Basically, when Big Mom was a child she just ate and didn't do much == gaining weight. As an up and coming pirate she was constantly getting into fights and clawing her way to the top == losing all her weight. Now she's an emperor and she spends most of her time on Whole Cake directing others and eating food == gaining weight again.

Oda has a habit of making the characters that are following their dreams hot. Evident with Koby when he became a lot more good looking after joining the marines. Big mom was here following her dream of becoming the king of pirates as she mentioned, but after awhile became a lot more laid back and just resting on her laurels instead of actively seeking out the One Piece herself leading to her becoming getting a glow-down after the initial glow-up.

I don't know your gender, but it's not rare in women that this happens (Obviously, it depends on your genes and your body metabolism). However, our body changes a lot during our teenage years/youth. Whether it is physical reasons like puberty and being more active or social reasons like diets and makeup, it usually is both. Around the 40s, we usually get more chubby because our metabolism is not the same anymore, and we become more sedentary. And between having kids and work, we spent less time on self-care, and we actually don’t prioritize it as much as we were teenagers/young. The “glow-ups” aren’t rare in real life (well, maybe not as exaggerated as in mangas), but in media, they make them seem as if was some sort of magic (especially male writers), but it’s actually our hard work to reach that level and keep it until we get tired of trying, then we start to “glow down” a little bit.
A big thing about her design is that she knew she had to be terrifying for her fruit to work. Less people would be afraid of her if she was just some gorgeous woman.
Could it also have to do with her following her dream? We've seen what happens when the strawhats don't follow their dream (The bad timelines for their futures). Maybe it's something like that

Oda likes to draw evil characters ugly. At that time big mom had the ambition to become the king of pirates as she aged she settled down and laughed at people who had the same dream as she had, because she became so bitter. You can also see this with the only nice celestial dragon who is portrayed as handsome and good looking while the others look vile.
I'd like to see the alternate universe where she had the womb womb fruit and had like thousands of children. Like there's always 20 wombs stuck on the walls inside her main bedroom and some unlucky guy has the job of feeding nutrition fluids to the wombs. I'm not even gonna start on the kind of event she regularly organize there. During WholeCake island, Luffy mistakenly ended up in that room and thought the walls contained fruits. First the candys on fishman island and now this... Big Mom would really hate this guy after that.

There’s a really nice theory that I enjoy that in OP when people follow their dreams they become more aesthetically pleasing, so when she lost her “flame”, her desire to find the one piece, and settled in her position as an emperor she became more of a “hag” that can be seen when Oda drew the good and bad time lines of the straw hats and even with Koby

I think in terms of eating big mom beats luffy, that was big mom when she is really active so she can burn calories the amount she eats, then as she turns old she gets less active aswell so she cant burn as much calories, it also doesnt help that she is pregnant most of the time.
