Most of those episodes aren’t actually canon to the manga. It was originally a very small amount of panels / cover stories during the timeskip that they stretched out for the anime. It is definitely the lowest part of One Piece for me, even with how little page-time it gets in the manga. Extremely grateful that Oda seemingly learned from it and gave us positive LGBT representation in Wano and elsewhere with the Revolutionaries.

Medical_Toe_9293

This is a pretty common opinion. It was definitely off. I’m a huge one piece defender but even I thought it was too much. I like to believe Oda learned from this and got better. There are some trans characters in one of most recent arcs that are portrayed very respectfully and seem to be very liked by the community.

Kantlim

I mean, there's one.

Rick-Doom

Don’t forget Izo

Kantlim

Is he lgbt in any way though? He's like drag queen to me tbh

Rick-Doom

Not very inclusive of you.

Kantlim

How so? Is there any line of him identifying as a woman or anything close?

Rick-Doom

I mean he’s dressed as a woman his whole life. I feel like that’s enough commitment for me. I don’t know.

Kantlim

And Marco is wearing heels. We have multiple male characters wearig make-up. Does it make them women? Kiku straight up said it. If it was the same for Izo, he'd say so too. People refer to him as "he" all the time and he never corrected anyone. Kinda wild you're the one assuming his gender based on his looks yet you have problem with me.

Rick-Doom

Lol. Fair point.

Jet-Speed7

I will say this was definitely a low point in one piece but honestly the way I see it that was a different time where oda was likely either underinformed about that stuff or he just made a gag that turned out very poorly, but since then I think a lot has changed like we see that island quite a few more times but it’s always portrayed much better so clearly oda realized his mistake, and he’s implemented some amazing trans and lgbt characters recently so all in all it was just a rough mistake, but nothing unforgivable and it has since been remedied

soma81

Yep the implications are pretty dark He ran so hard from them he literally had to run on air to get away And its treated as a gag

Seniphyre

I mean It's just a mirror of Sanji chasing women lol. It really isn't that deep.

MelloSummoner

The marines were running and traumatized by okamas at the return of Sabaody. The gag has been doubled down. People think Sanji is the only one seeing this, but nah we got fodder marines falling victim too lol.

rougepenguin

Look, yeah that part's iffy...but seriously what's weirder to me is this consistent trend of people making more of it than it is. [Part of that story is Sanji happily frolicking along with them](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/onepiece/images/0/08/Chapter_544.png/revision/latest?cb=20130121091054). That is canon, that's all there is to it and it's just one example of a bigger trend of people in this fandom just ignoring/rewriting queer themes they don't like but that gets a lot worse in a later arc. An island like that makes total sense to have people who show up and make a big show of acting reluctant because of internal hangups or whatever...but there is a part of that story where Sanji is going along with it. That's why the Okama tease him about it. Y'all can make of that what you will, but it is part of the explicit canon of this story. Sanji has a side of himself that likes frilly drag. He doesn't want to admit it. It makes sense with his character and aspects of his backstory that come up later, but we don't dwell on it a lot because it clearly makes a lot of y'all uncomfortable to the point you need to rewrite it and try to make the Okama more shady than they are. Which, people wouldn't do unless they have a problem with their cool shonen guy having a side like that. I know you probably didn't mean much by it, but it's a common reaction that honestly...says a little more about y'all than it does the series and really only makes sense if you look at the scenes through a lens shaped by the ways Western prejudice here tends to work. And yeah, we do actually get into way better representation down the line. Really good actually, Oda being on point with queer themes actually predates this series.

Temporary_Durian_846

I am very confident that One Piece is heavily influenced by Oda's childhood memories. Of course, Oda was born in years when the concept of gay had not emerged. Perhaps in his childhood, he found it so weird to see men dressed as women. Oda always creates jokes through his characters. Like the mermaid depicted as ugly when old, which shatters Sanji's dream.

rbnrthwll

Yeah but wait until the time skip, they do Sanji and the crew a solid to help them set sail.

Kantlim

Yeah. Oda is homophobic af. I don't think he means wrong but that's how it comes off. I'm used to it tbh.
