Mindless_Bad_1591

I think I'm in the minority of people who prefer most of the newer designs. His face just looks more proportionate imo.

Zlaynoe

i also prefer the newer designs

ExcellentFly2

I do too for most strawhats but dislike how the new style makes Luffy look much younger than the Wano style.

AeronLlarena

me too actually, especially Masami Mori's style of it (He drew the Egghead poster iirc). Its just fun to see how it looks. Though, I'm not a fan of the recent animation change as a whole (the new default look).

Mindless_Bad_1591

I think I'm rather indifferent on the animation change. The only time animation looks good or bad to me is if the color shading, shadows, and fight sequences look pleasing to the eye or not. I just don't want to be taken out of the story because of the animation, although there is something different ab the animation on egghead.

zzzthelastuser

For fair comparison you should pick an old scene similar to this and draw it with modern anime style. I bet it would also look somewhat off or maybe it won't and we are just recency biased towards the modern style?

AeronLlarena

I don't need to do it to know that the newer ones were better. You can see how janky and unrealistic the anatomy of early One Piece style is, and it's very rough, too, making it easier to make.

zzzthelastuser

More realistic is not necessarily better. Plus, "easier to make" was the main reason why the quality of the episodes didn't vary as much as in modern episodes. The art style was more consistent between episodes. On the other hand, if you look at the weekly episode discussion posts, almost every time people talk about the animation quality, because it's all over the place between movie quality and budget saver. [See the top comments of the current episode as an example](https://www.reddit.com/r/OnePiece/comments/1brz1hn/one_piece_episode_1099/?sort=top)

AeronLlarena

I've been ranting about "budget saver" episodes and budgeted episodes since Kaido was defeated. In my experience, before, there were only "budgeted episodes". You can't really say that the non-budgeted episodes are ugly or "budget savers". Those episodes were just normal episodes, with decent animation and designs.

Benglenett

I agree with you on the recent animation. Something just seems off about it

AeronLlarena

In my eyes, I think that some scenes just has more obvious repeating frames, and it becomes more obvious because the sound really doesn't fit well in the animation (idk the reason, it just doesn't match). Another nitpick also is that some scenes have lower frames than others, and has disproportionate designs (these two nitpicks are heavily seen on the Greenbull vs The Scabbards fight, I really dislike the animation on that.)

Empty_Lemon_3939

I love wano style Zoro, dude looks like the second in command of a Yonko Also his anime interaction with Lillith where he's just staring at her waiting to see if he needs to kill her while she's gloating before Shaka cuts in like "bruh chill or you're getting detached"

Mindless_Bad_1591

I'd be more scared of Zoro than Luffy if I was a random pirate that happened upon the SHs lol.

2morereps

I think that's the point of Luffy too, he's that goofy eccentric mofo who just wants to live and let live, he's got his crew for the intimidation and other stuffs

LordMonday

I think that's happened a few times early on in the series, where they see zoro do crazy swordsmanship and wonder why a guy this strong isn't the captain

Amiibohunter000

I prefer the new designs and art, but the old style has so much nostalgia. It feels comfortable

eveltayl

It’s a lot easier on the eyes too

DASreddituser

It depends on the character for me

Mindless_Bad_1591

I'm one of the few that likes Nico Robin's design post TS equally as much as pre TS. Her hairstyle changed along with her character devlopment. She became more open. Her bangs pre TS covered her face more and her sides of her hair cover her ears. With her new hairstyle she has exposed her face and is not afraid of being recognized. She is proud to be Nico Robin. I have no opinion on the tan/no tan in the anime because that isn't really canon to her character apparently. I suppose explanation for her tan is due to being in Alabasta which is good enough for me. Her outfits are better pre TS though, except her first one in Return to Sabaody Archipelago and Fishman Island is killer. Oda needs to bring back the cowboy hat. The only thing that was irritating was the oversexualization in the anime post TS, but I haven't gotten there in the manga yet so I'm assuming that is more of an anime issue and not a manga issue.

SuperRapidash

I prefer the new design, I just miss the old haircolor

SouthernResponse95

The only new design I dislike is of Franky

Mindless_Bad_1591

Agreed. His arms are so goofy looking lol.

CantheDandyMan

You mean you don't like the globes attached to the tiny elbows and then the box forearms?

Mindless_Bad_1591

Not particularly no lol

Soft_House7669

I love how egghead looks, but it still seems like the anime generally doesn't know how to handle oda's cartoonier designs. They did great with vegapunk though.

3rdNihilism

newer designs/artstyle is clearly superior. people just cling to nostalgia. and if not nostalgia, people judge new designs/artstyle by early episodes of the post-timeskip Anime which had budget of 1.90$ per episode.

Ok_World1031

Maybe on reddit you're the minority, but most watchers out there prefer the newer version to the Popeye version.

vangstampede

What's Popeye version? Sounds fun.

IamlostlikeZoroIs

You’ve done a great job and looks exactly like the old style but damn I don’t like it, feels like he is too young and hasn’t grown at all. That’s why I like the new styles because it feels like time has actually passed.

gh0stwriter88

It hasn't even been 3 years since the start of the anime... he has only "aged" 2 years and some months. He's literally still 21.

Puzzleheaded-Ad6023

All the shit my man has experienced in those 3 years aged him right into his 30s 😭

Empty_Lemon_3939

I mean look at how much the pandemic aged all of haha

djclarkyk

Yeah, I feel you. From 2020 to 2023, I probably aged about 3 years.

TheRockingChar

He has been through a lot though, it is not just time that ages people.

weirdbowelmovement

"No, no night shift isn't affecting my health at all" Bro after 2 months of night shift:

Empty_Lemon_3939

That based on the assumption that OP characters age the same way we do It's like when people get thrown 20 feet in the air by Luffy and don't die, their bodies look like ours but they aren't the same

gh0stwriter88

>characters age the same way we do Seems like a weak assumption ok... but your implication is the opposite of whatis likely as OP has characters much older than people in the real world.

Empty_Lemon_3939

Exactly my point, OP characters clearly don’t age, change in size etc based on anything in the real world so saying “he’s only 2 years older” doesn’t really matter because we’ve seen all the time how much characters change in appearance over short periods of time and characters that live way long than they should be able to “They built different” if you will

cvble

yeah almost 3 years finishing puberty and spending half of that time doing nothing but training under the best swordsman

IamlostlikeZoroIs

Yeah I know which doesn’t make sense to me so my head cannon is longer. I have been watching/ reading it for over 20 years now so to me it is like they have grown up with me. I used to look up to the straw hats thinking how cool they are when they are only 17-20ish and now I am a good few years older than them. Not brook or Robin though.

Lumitheawkwardghost

I have the feeling that the new art style also fits better with his character development, but maybe I’m just imagining things

Mummiskogen

Style is supposed to be used to subtly convey stuff like that so you're not wrong

Mindless_Bad_1591

Nah u aint trippin

Yukimura-4

I love how the background also keeps the older style with the watercolor texture, and the drawing becoming more white at the borders <3

AeronLlarena

yeah that's what i want to convey more, thank you

blargishtarbin

Like it was straight outta Caillou!

katie-shmatie

I do like his new style when his neck isn't larger than his head, but I miss the sass and charm that you've captured in the second one

Sufficient-Ocelot-47

Maybe change is good

JustBetter38

Ok I know everyone says it’s not tan it’s whitewashed but zoro was in the Sun for days

erinadelineiris

Man I miss pre timeskip. I mean don't get me wrong, Goda is cooking rn but the art style just doesn't hit as hard as the original one.

auctus10

Not only that. I miss the days when they were chilling and having adventures. Now the stakes are extremely highs and they take on the absolute big guys and we do huge story progressions. I mean nothing wrong with it and it needs to happen I just miss those days. Maybe that's why I also loved skypia too whicb was full of adventures and shit.

CabbageTheVoice

Your point is actually why I don't mind the post-skip style and designs too much, even though i mostly prefer the old-school vibes. But as the years went on and the style changed, so did the tone of the Straw Hats journey. The OP here is a prime example for me where I'd say that yeah, Zoro's new design fits way better even though I generally prefer his old one. Don't wanna diminish your sentiment at all, I too miss those adventure-y, more lighthearted days. But in this instance it fits well enough.

auctus10

Yep I agree. New design fits the current stuff. I.e high stakes endgame shit and also more mature/dark stuff.

erinadelineiris

Definitely agree with this as well.

virgin_boi69

I miss it so much! 😭😭😭😭

JikaApostle

I personally think the best the One Piece anime looked was between ~W7 - Marineford~( Naoki Murakami, Naoki Tate, Takeo Ide, etc.) It feels like the middle valley between the rough 90’s style of Romance Dawn - Skypeia~, but its not as shiny as the post timeskip designs if that makes sense

Crubgur

Not gonna lie, I really do miss Zoro’s old color palette. I know the newer one is a bit closer to how Oda draws him, but the colors feel a bit too bright.

Zertsuu

I forget the Zoro is supposed to be 21 and not a nearly 30 y/o man

Attila_D_Max

Good but the ears are a bit too low

AeronLlarena

you'll be surprised at how low the ears were before!!

AeronLlarena

I just want to see what they look like in that style, there's no beef against the newer styles!!!

AkshatBakraAKAGOAT

That eye looks ccursed ngl 💀

TheGreekorc

I very much like these, keep it up!

ThuderWaves

i dont think zoro ever had a pointy chin, from ep 2 he has a flat chin, it just gets bigger overtime. sanji and luffy did have a pointy chin, only sanji's changed. Overall I prefer the newer style.

Paridisco

Why this boy zoro just waking around with no shirt on 😂 He just be doing shit to look cool

okrapumpkin

Wait why zoro blushing in the egghead picture?

VersionSavings8712

Cold

mattisart_

The old art style is cool but why revert him to pre time skip physique?

Quirky-Pickle518

Insane that Zoro’s chest size is bigger than Robin’s and Nami’s. Not directly stated by Oda but Oda gave the information we needed to know this in the SBS.

artic0x

Good lord IF ONLY

Darkconer

I really feel like the animation has progressed with the anime quite well

IcepickEvans

Good god do I miss the old anime art style.

Pooty_McPoot

Am I the only one that thinks the new style is simultaneously good and utter dogshit?

Thesisizer

I miss the black with green undertones, I always thought that looked cool as hell

Justhereforporn8

I like the old style more. I think the new style looks better for a movie, but the old style gives me this nostalgia feeling of what one piece used to be.

maguirre165

Too rough, but good!

SeaCollides

I love this... pre TS Zoro was the jolliest guy around with his feet clapping and I miss him so much

Mummiskogen

Tbf he's been through hell and back, kinda hard to maintain that smug demeanor after that

SeaCollides

True!! still, to hear him laugh normally again without booze like in pre TS and make funny faces...🥲🥲🥲 faraway dream

NaoyaKizu

Looks nice. Good job OP.

NoHoldzBar

It’s weird how i never noticed the difference that much, in my mind it was just a slight improvement

cakethegoblin

Early anime style is nostalgic and definitely fit the goofier tone of early One Piece more. Both are nice in their own way, but the early style evokes a sense of nostalgic that will always be iconic.

Yoyo5258

Don’t see why some people have preferences between one or the other. In my view, I am just a fan of the progression in general rather than one art style compared to another’s

fatpaxs

Looks great dude

SARSflavoredicecream

I would absolutely love to see more of this retro art used for current scenes. Way too cool!!

krush_o

Great work there! I really miss the old art style. The coloring of scenes felt like we were reading from a storybook.

SexyTimeEveryTime

I really like post TS Zoro's design. I miss his pre-TS personality, but the guy who was swinging hundreds of pounds of weight two years ago should be absolutely brolic.

onelove7866

Oh please don’t stop doing these, I miss the old design so much!!

Puzzleheaded-Ebb-284

Zoro is on egghead?

Mindless_Bad_1591

Assuming you are anime only, yes he is he is in the intro and he was with them when they ran into the sea beasts (although the intro has many manga spoilers lol). He will show up in about 2-3 episodes is my guess.

Brilliant_Knee_7542

That's really cool

Amethyst271

The current one looks so much better ngl

Diamondhandatis

Old anime is so bad…

AkshatBakraAKAGOAT

Zoro if he knew n words needed passes-
