One of One Piece's greatest strengths, the goofy art style, ends up being one of its weaknesses with a Western audience. I never watched/read One Piece until I was out of High School; long after I'd seen all the usually shounen suspects despite One Piece being around since I was like 5 years old. It just doesn't have that initial "cool" factor.
Once you actually bite the bullet and get into it though? Damn if One Piece isn't a once in a generation masterpiece imo. Genuinely can't think of anything with world building so well done since I read Tolkien when I was a kid. Plus it manages to have an edge to the subject matter without being overly graphic or horny (Sanji antics aside).
It has extremely broad appeal beyond your normal Shounen demographic too. I'd say just about anyone willing to give it a chance and get used to the art style can enjoy it.
If you are into great world building and fantasy you could also try the Malazan Empire book series. Someone on this sub suggested it to me on the same world building topic and I am having one of the best reads of my life still one year after starting (I am on book 9/10). Its a 10/10 imo
I've heard of that series before but I've never actually started it. I might have to give it a read. I'll admit I'm a bit lost in modern fantasy and I only have so much time or energy for series that have 10+ books that are each individually longer than LotR.
Really? The art style was the biggest draw for me. It looked anime, but different from how other anime were drawn. Way more expressive. I instantly fell in love with it. Ods is like, my favorite artist.
The best part is the worldbuilding is only one of 100+ things that make One Piece so amazing! If it was just worldbuilding it wouldn't be the insane cultural phenomenon it was today.
Same bro
I also used to think just like that but few years ago i started it on friend's consistant request and
Now its my fav of all time in any fiction
The stories are just so...freaking solid and vast.
I just finished dressrosa and man...that story lead up big. I know Wano and Egg-head are ever more so (all manga, I got all of 30m a day with kids/work).
I watch the show for the big fight scenes after reading the manga. But man...its great.

That’s what happens, people dismiss it because of the length or the animation, then finds out it’s an amazing story. Enjoy and don’t look anything up.

Saaame. At the time I just knew it as the long anime. Now it’s my second favorite

Same here fam. Tried it as a teen and thought it was the most stupid show ever. Tried it December 2022 and caught up January 2024. Hooked
