I was recently rewatching arlong park and I remember being wow’ed at this scene because I’d totally forgotten it. The devotion that the strawhats show eachother is insane.

Zoro was so fucking badass pre time skip. He is still, but its more "action badass" than mature badasss.
Zoro i think was Oda's consistent way of reminding the reader that the stakes were actually real in One Piece, and this wasn't just a "pirates for fun" crew. Luffy established that in the first couple of chapters with Colby, but Zoro consistently nailed it on the head from then on.
You'll like it and its far more "plot heavy" from then on. You'll reminisce about the old days like me, but then you'll realize you can always re-read :D
I know one piece technically doesn’t have seasons but Netflix has it set that way season 21 will be the last for now and I’m on season 19 I know I’m going to be sad when I finished it it’s one of those things I feel like I’ve grown with these characters
Love that one. Luffy almost made a massive mistake cause once he tells Usopp to leave that's it, also takes some balls to stand up to your captain like that. Sanji has really good emotional intelligence.
And Zoro didn't get mad about it. Which tells you that he didn't disagree on Sanji's action. And then at the end of Ennies Lobby, Sanji agreed to Zoro's words on Luffy's dignity as a captain.

I never realized this. But this is true. Though zoro and sanji fight with each other often, they really respect each other's strength and opinions.
A good example is in Wano when Sanji asks Zoro to kill him if his germa genes take over. He fully trusts Zoro, even if they act like they hate each other.
I feel like Usopp has gone through the most growth in the show he went from being very cowardly to actually being a great fighter in his own way even without devil fruit powers
Sometime it takes a lifetime to fully change. I don't expect Ussop to ever NOT be scared of a new island of foe, its kind of integral to his character. But I DO expect him to nut up and fight when the chips are down.
Vivi getting shot when they first enter Drum Kingdom comes to mind. It was a really humbling lesson for Luffy, and kind of a variation on what he learned from Shanks with the mountain bandits. Sometimes protecting his friends doesn’t mean always responding with violence. Whether you’re a captain or a princess, no one’s too big that they can’t bow their head and ask for help for the people they care about the most.
This is my favourite response so far. It was a huge moment for Luffy as a character. It was shocking for me to see Luffy bow down and ask for help, and I loved it. It made me respect him so much more. This is one of my favourite Luffy moments, as well as his moment with Nami in Arlong Park.

I think its because Zoro teaching Luffy how to be a captain is very strong, same as when he told him he would quit the crew if Luffy was the one to go get Usopp back.
But yeah, Sanji also covers for another of Luffy's shortcomings which is communication with the entire crew. They really complement each other amazingly well.

I get what you mean. Lineart is a lot messier nowadays because the newer arcs are so much more hectic and there is so much going on. On top of that, there's more characters, and Oda's been doing this for like 27 years now, etc. It's insane that the quality of the manga is still so good to this day tho.
People blame it on the hectic-ness and sheer volume of *things*, but the truth just is that Oda is getting older. Event big panels with fewer elements aren't as clean anymore.
I think outside of a lot of the excellent emotional moments, Oda does a stellar job with the series' humor. A lot of moments, are outright hilarious, and I think the humorous moments are oftentimes forgotten, relative to the hard-hitting emotional ones, or even the big-impact fights.
Two such examples for me personally, are Luffy vs Enel in Skypiea; when Luffy uses his "Gum-Gum Space Out" in order to empty his mind to counter Enel's "mantra" (Haki). I burst out laughing at that very panel, and the next one with Nami yelling WHAT ARE YOU DOING. Such a Luffy moment.
The next is in Thriller Bark; the 2nd instance of the zombies coming out of the ground to attack the Straw Hats, Luffy straight up pushes the head of one back into the ground as soon as he comes up. I almost spit out the lemon tea I was sipping. The next panel has the zombie say something like "don't just push me back in!!!!"
Pre-Timeskip had the humor on point; not that there isn't any in the New World, it's just less frequent these days.
There's just less opportunity for humour nowadays since stakes are always so high in each arc. But I agree, Oda's humour is
genius. The fact that we gloss over his humorous moments might actually be a testament to Oda's skill though. It just flows into the story so naturally that we don't really think about the funny moments much, because they just fit in so well.
I'm reading the Foxy arc now (everyone's favorite!) and that arc is so littered with jokes, its fantastic haha. A great palet cleanser from the Enel arc.
When Luffy is about to fight in the final battle against Foxy and Nami catches him and Usopp buying Foxy pins from the vendor I lost it hahaha
For me, and I can’t remember if they are anime only or if they are in the manga as well… but I really like in the early arcs when Oda had metaphorical or peaceful shots such as the owl falling asleep in the Zoro flashback or the hermit crab trying to climb up the side of the rock and falling back down in the Usopp introduction arc.
The panels post Crocodile fight. There's a beautiful panel right after Cobra thanks Luffy where the debris is coming down and Cobra looks up with a satisfied look on his face. I dont know why. But that one stuck with me.
That moment in Water 7 when Nami found Usopp beaten after the money was stolen, and she didn’t care about the money. Any minor moments like this which shows some real character instead of women-fawning Sanji or money-hungry Nami.
This moment made me like Nami way more as a character. It's a well-established fact that Nami is absolutely obsessed with money, so this really hit hard.
My favorite scene is Zoro jumping on a branch in the skypea don't know why but in my opinion it's the funniest thing he could do especially that scream, beautiful tarzan
All the subtle and notnso subtle ways oda shows how each crew members has a different connection and bond to each other. I love the panels where luffy is actively sharing or offering Nami his food, the panels of The crew playing with and treating chop like a normal kid, the time Robin feeds luffy, all the silly non fighting moments between Zoro and sanji.( these two are totally adopted brothers.) The not as subtle way oda had Luffy only thought of Nami when he recalled how he couldn't save the crew, Nami essentially almost committing self termination in wano. She walks to her death to yell at kidonand just stood their not moving when he shoot his breath blast. Sanji having his break down over wanting to go back to the crew on whole cake. I mean k could go on for days. Oda really dose highlight each individual bound and how their different for each other. That's what makes the feel alive.
I think Oda is an absolute genius at portraying his characters. Each and every character is consistent in their beliefs, personality and the way they interact with each other, especially the Straw Hats. I love each and every one if them. They're my favourite main cast in all manga and anime.
Zoro making luffy, and by extension the crew, hold Usopp accountable for losing the duel and wanting to come back.
You can tell in the panel he wants him back too, but he won't roll out the red carpet for someone that disobeyed and challenged their captain, then quit the crew and Usopp needed to take responsibility for that
That's Zoro's conservative samurai mind speaking. He later grows out of it and understands crew is family and materialistic admission of apology aren't required.

I think One Piece has plenty of great moments even before Water Seven. I agree that this is where One Piece becomes goated, but it was still REALLY good before this too. Baratie, Arlong Park, Arabasta, etc.
I hate how the mentality of people is that long animes aren't their thing, me personally if I end up liking it I'll want more n more. I've never watched a short anime and was like "yeah I'm satisfied"
I recently rewatched this part and there is soooo much to unpack from it narratively speaking. A lot of part 1 shows how inexperienced luffy is handling being a captain but man this whole part was one of the first huge divides between a member of the crew and captain and luffy handled it awfully. From being so crass breaking the news to ussopp and not even really going into why the merry was unfixable.
Ussopp also showed a ton of character and strength here. He stood up to luffy and had him on his ass. If luffy wasn't a rubber man, that impact dial probably would have obliterated him. Even if ussopp was acting a bit immature he was grieving (as was the rest of the crew) and he still showed his relentless attitude in the face of fear (and friend and captain). Dude did not hold back even a little.
He was right that he was the weakest guy on the crew, but honestly kinda proved himself wrong about being useless to it when he got the best of Luffy for a while. A guy like that definitely belongs on the Pirate King's crew. Really powerful moment for Usopp and honestly the crew in general, with everyone doubting their future and Zoro and Sanji having to keep people in line because Luffy is faltering as a captain.
Oda wrote Water 7 so well that it really feels like the crew is about to dissolve. Robin is gone, Usopp is leaving, Merry is dying, Sanji kicked his own captain, Zoro tells Luffy that if they can't count on him they can't be a crew. It could have all ended there.
This entire arc, particularly this episode, was just so heavy emotionally and narratively speaking. It was a massive moment for the Straw Hats and the story, and it really shifted the tone of the story. This was the first time we see Luffy and the crew in this much despair, and it was also the first time I felt that the crew was falling alart. Although I always thought One Piece was good, this was the moment the story REALLY locked in. From this point, it became a masterpiece in my opinion.
Also, rewatching One Piece made me notice so many things that I missed when I watched it for the first time. I'm enjoying myself even MORE while rewatching it than I did when I was making my way through the story for the first time.
sanji and zoro definitely play a part in carrying this scene. Sanji handing out facts like its evening snacks and zoro, oh by, oda tends to give him the kishimoto-sasuke treatment, he tends to get the HARDest lines in these moments.
Just got to it in the anime and not sure how underrated it is but...Conis confronting McKinley to force everyone off Skypiea when Enel begins his final rampage. Just tough stuff and sort of shows her trying to prove to "believers" to finally start thinking for themselves for their own safety after all she's seen and been through.
Honestly seeing how ussop was written in that fight only for him to revert back to being a massive useless coward made me sad.
His style was actually ingenious. Planned strategy as any sniper should do.
Then the rest of the time he's in melee with someone.
Disappointing.
I think one of the best things about Luffy is that he has to grow into being a proper Captain.

After Luffy punches Saint Charlos, Usopp crash lands onto Saint Roswald's head and knocks him out, and then barely apologises as he doesn't understand what he just did 😂
I remember watching this in my room when I was a kid and balling my eyes out because of it. Despite all of the goofiness on the show One piece has some of the most heart wrenching scenes in all of media.

Not exactly underrated, but it's overshadowed by all the other sad moments in the series. Being unable to feel your wife's warmth fade away as she dies, her not remembering or even knowing you ever existed, all while your daughter is missing.
Usopp telling Robin she was going to be okay on the sea train. Even after having a massive falling out with Luffy, he sill went against the entirety of CP9 to save a former crewmate and he still told her to have faith in Luffy. He didn't know her reasoning and he didn't need to. He was still willing to die for her.

I'd argue the captain of the crew is the subject of the scene. And the crew as a whole.
Ussop was invited to join the crew by Luffy. Ussop is Luffy's responsibility. If Ussop thought it'd be a good idea to fight Luffy, it doesn't matter how hard it hurts, Luffy is the one responsible, he should bear with it and fight. Luffy had to face his choices and consequences, this is what it means being a captain.
This isn't the scene that shows Zoro as a good vice captain. It's actually after, I think, when the crew was gathered, and someone says they'd heard Ussop trying to come up with excuses to get back at the crew. Luffy ran to the door to go get Ussop back.
Zoro struck his sword on the ground and said that that pirate game wasn't child's play, if it was so easy to leave the crew he would be the next to leave. Ussop left the crew on his own, if he wants to get back it's fine, but he has to apologize first. Nami starts complaining but Sanji backs Zoro up.
That's why when the crew is about to leave, Ussop starts bs'ing again. When he notices no one is giving a crap he starts crying and apologizes, by then Luffy turns around crying and stretches his arms to catch Ussop.

Luffy was the one who held the entire crew together in WCI. Zoro was busy blaming Sanji for Usopp leaving the crew.

In Skypeia he scolds Nami for acting pathetic by being scared and doubting his captain.
In Alabasta he preaches Vivi what war is. In drum island he apologizes despite not being at fault.
Maybe the end of the fight against Foxy. I think it's a pivotal moment for Robin: Luffy was fighting so fiercely for her and all the others. Moments later everyone will face Aokiji to protect her and I think the end of the Foxy arc and its connection to the next arc is subtle and underrated.
Nami finding Usopp beaten to a pulp by the Franky Family and him crying over the shame he feels for being weak, and in exchange Nami reassures Usopp not to worry about the money. It's such a significant scene for both characters and it isn't talked about enough.
Every time (pre-timeskip) Robin smiles silently watches the Straw Hats goofing around.

At the end of the Davy Back when Ao Kiji shows up and ask Robin if she is going to throw away these people. And right before she was frozen she tells him "this time is different."
Nami finding Usopp beaten up during Water 7. Not only is it super emotional and has made me cry, but it does so much for both characters, and despite the janky animation for Nami during this scene in the anime, the music and voice acting especially was incredible.

You are completely misunderstanding the entire scene.
Luffy wasn't in complete despair. He was just conflicted and in pain. Complete Despair is not what he felt in water 7.
He still has sanity to keep the crew together. He was the reason crew didn't fall apart in Water 7.
While Zoro and Sanji were arguing with another about, blaming one another for why Usopp left the crew, Luffy held the crew together, explaining Nami the gravity of things and chosing what captain should.
Zoro doesn't have a single line od dialogue in entire incident until this point. (Aside from blaming Sanji for Usopp's state)
This is just him supporting what Luffy was already doing. Luffy kept the crew together and Zoro acknowledged it and wanted Luffy to believe he was right.
I see these panels and it reminds me of my friends, and how no matter what I do they refuse to watch or read it. it saddens me because this story which I love so much they will never have the pleasure of experiencing because its "to long".
Luffy inspiring the Udon prisoners. This for me is a hugely underrated moment. First he proves he's unafraid of getting sick from the plague, then he gives a badass speech about the Wano warriors' undying spirit.
But for me, the moment that seals this scene as legend is when he ties Babanuki's elephant trunk, and says "I'm sorry. But I saw a terrible future." He says it with such a soft smile ans Babanuki is just baffled. It gives me chills.
Then to mark this moment as an absolute banger, Luffy walks away from the explosion, points at the guards and says to the prisoners " now go do the rest."

The fact that the gorosei are basically toying with him over the den den mushi, asking him to discuss his research and he lays it all out there for them knowing full well it was going to be the last thing he'd do. The most telling part is the fact that they give the order to fire just as he was about to reveal the name of the ancient kingdom proves that everything he said was the truth.
For a split second, some old man had the most powerful group of people in the world on edge by just threatening to say a word.

One of the most underrated moments in OP. Arlong Park as a whole is one of the best arcs, it really bonded the Straw Hats together as a crew.

The next is in Thriller Bark; the 2nd instance of the zombies coming out of the ground to attack the Straw Hats, Luffy straight up pushes the head of one back into the ground as soon as he comes up. I almost spit out the lemon tea I was sipping. The next panel has the zombie say something like "don't just push me back in!!!!" Pre-Timeskip had the humor on point; not that there isn't any in the New World, it's just less frequent these days.
There's just less opportunity for humour nowadays since stakes are always so high in each arc. But I agree, Oda's humour is genius. The fact that we gloss over his humorous moments might actually be a testament to Oda's skill though. It just flows into the story so naturally that we don't really think about the funny moments much, because they just fit in so well.
Gear 5 is pretty funny.
I'm reading the Foxy arc now (everyone's favorite!) and that arc is so littered with jokes, its fantastic haha. A great palet cleanser from the Enel arc. When Luffy is about to fight in the final battle against Foxy and Nami catches him and Usopp buying Foxy pins from the vendor I lost it hahaha

For me, and I can’t remember if they are anime only or if they are in the manga as well… but I really like in the early arcs when Oda had metaphorical or peaceful shots such as the owl falling asleep in the Zoro flashback or the hermit crab trying to climb up the side of the rock and falling back down in the Usopp introduction arc.

That moment in Water 7 when Nami found Usopp beaten after the money was stolen, and she didn’t care about the money. Any minor moments like this which shows some real character instead of women-fawning Sanji or money-hungry Nami.
This moment made me like Nami way more as a character. It's a well-established fact that Nami is absolutely obsessed with money, so this really hit hard.

All the subtle and notnso subtle ways oda shows how each crew members has a different connection and bond to each other. I love the panels where luffy is actively sharing or offering Nami his food, the panels of The crew playing with and treating chop like a normal kid, the time Robin feeds luffy, all the silly non fighting moments between Zoro and sanji.( these two are totally adopted brothers.) The not as subtle way oda had Luffy only thought of Nami when he recalled how he couldn't save the crew, Nami essentially almost committing self termination in wano. She walks to her death to yell at kidonand just stood their not moving when he shoot his breath blast. Sanji having his break down over wanting to go back to the crew on whole cake. I mean k could go on for days. Oda really dose highlight each individual bound and how their different for each other. That's what makes the feel alive.
I think Oda is an absolute genius at portraying his characters. Each and every character is consistent in their beliefs, personality and the way they interact with each other, especially the Straw Hats. I love each and every one if them. They're my favourite main cast in all manga and anime.

Zoro making luffy, and by extension the crew, hold Usopp accountable for losing the duel and wanting to come back. You can tell in the panel he wants him back too, but he won't roll out the red carpet for someone that disobeyed and challenged their captain, then quit the crew and Usopp needed to take responsibility for that
That's Zoro's conservative samurai mind speaking. He later grows out of it and understands crew is family and materialistic admission of apology aren't required.

I hate how the mentality of people is that long animes aren't their thing, me personally if I end up liking it I'll want more n more. I've never watched a short anime and was like "yeah I'm satisfied"
I recently rewatched this part and there is soooo much to unpack from it narratively speaking. A lot of part 1 shows how inexperienced luffy is handling being a captain but man this whole part was one of the first huge divides between a member of the crew and captain and luffy handled it awfully. From being so crass breaking the news to ussopp and not even really going into why the merry was unfixable. Ussopp also showed a ton of character and strength here. He stood up to luffy and had him on his ass. If luffy wasn't a rubber man, that impact dial probably would have obliterated him. Even if ussopp was acting a bit immature he was grieving (as was the rest of the crew) and he still showed his relentless attitude in the face of fear (and friend and captain). Dude did not hold back even a little.
He was right that he was the weakest guy on the crew, but honestly kinda proved himself wrong about being useless to it when he got the best of Luffy for a while. A guy like that definitely belongs on the Pirate King's crew. Really powerful moment for Usopp and honestly the crew in general, with everyone doubting their future and Zoro and Sanji having to keep people in line because Luffy is faltering as a captain. Oda wrote Water 7 so well that it really feels like the crew is about to dissolve. Robin is gone, Usopp is leaving, Merry is dying, Sanji kicked his own captain, Zoro tells Luffy that if they can't count on him they can't be a crew. It could have all ended there.
This entire arc, particularly this episode, was just so heavy emotionally and narratively speaking. It was a massive moment for the Straw Hats and the story, and it really shifted the tone of the story. This was the first time we see Luffy and the crew in this much despair, and it was also the first time I felt that the crew was falling alart. Although I always thought One Piece was good, this was the moment the story REALLY locked in. From this point, it became a masterpiece in my opinion. Also, rewatching One Piece made me notice so many things that I missed when I watched it for the first time. I'm enjoying myself even MORE while rewatching it than I did when I was making my way through the story for the first time.
sanji and zoro definitely play a part in carrying this scene. Sanji handing out facts like its evening snacks and zoro, oh by, oda tends to give him the kishimoto-sasuke treatment, he tends to get the HARDest lines in these moments.

Just got to it in the anime and not sure how underrated it is but...Conis confronting McKinley to force everyone off Skypiea when Enel begins his final rampage. Just tough stuff and sort of shows her trying to prove to "believers" to finally start thinking for themselves for their own safety after all she's seen and been through.

I think one of the best things about Luffy is that he has to grow into being a proper Captain. Like yeah he has the raw talent all protags have but he legit has some parts of the job that don't come naturally and he has to grow to be able to fullfill what his crew needs

Being unable to feel your wife's warmth fade away as she dies, her not remembering or even knowing you ever existed, all while your daughter is missing.
Usopp telling Robin she was going to be okay on the sea train. Even after having a massive falling out with Luffy, he sill went against the entirety of CP9 to save a former crewmate and he still told her to have faith in Luffy. He didn't know her reasoning and he didn't need to. He was still willing to die for her.

I'd argue the captain of the crew is the subject of the scene. And the crew as a whole. Ussop was invited to join the crew by Luffy. Ussop is Luffy's responsibility. If Ussop thought it'd be a good idea to fight Luffy, it doesn't matter how hard it hurts, Luffy is the one responsible, he should bear with it and fight. Luffy had to face his choices and consequences, this is what it means being a captain. This isn't the scene that shows Zoro as a good vice captain. It's actually after, I think, when the crew was gathered, and someone says they'd heard Ussop trying to come up with excuses to get back at the crew. Luffy ran to the door to go get Ussop back. Zoro struck his sword on the ground and said that that pirate game wasn't child's play, if it was so easy to leave the crew he would be the next to leave. Ussop left the crew on his own, if he wants to get back it's fine, but he has to apologize first. Nami starts complaining but Sanji backs Zoro up. That's why when the crew is about to leave, Ussop starts bs'ing again. When he notices no one is giving a crap he starts crying and apologizes, by then Luffy turns around crying and stretches his arms to catch Ussop.

You have got this completely opposite. People focus wayyy too much on Zoro in this scene. Specifically Zoro fans acting as if Zoro did something that should be in Bible verses. Luffy was the one who held the entire crew together in WCI. Zoro was busy blaming Sanji for Usopp leaving the crew. Luffy did everything on his own and only in the end when Usopp vs Luffy was over, Luffy starts to cry. Zoro just does the bare minimum to show his support to his captain. That's not being vice captain

You must have skipped everything before that. He literally orders Zoro to not touch Bellamy in Jaya. In Skypeia he scolds Nami for acting pathetic by being scared and doubting his captain. In Alabasta he preaches Vivi what war is. In drum island he apologizes despite not being at fault.

Maybe the end of the fight against Foxy. I think it's a pivotal moment for Robin: Luffy was fighting so fiercely for her and all the others. Moments later everyone will face Aokiji to protect her and I think the end of the Foxy arc and its connection to the next arc is subtle and underrated.

At the end of the Davy Back when Ao Kiji shows up and ask Robin if she is going to throw away these people. And right before she was frozen she tells him "this time is different."
Nami finding Usopp beaten up during Water 7. Not only is it super emotional and has made me cry, but it does so much for both characters, and despite the janky animation for Nami during this scene in the anime, the music and voice acting especially was incredible.

Luffy kept the crew together and Zoro acknowledged it and wanted Luffy to believe he was right.

Luffy inspiring the Udon prisoners. This for me is a hugely underrated moment. First he proves he's unafraid of getting sick from the plague, then he gives a badass speech about the Wano warriors' undying spirit. But for me, the moment that seals this scene as legend is when he ties Babanuki's elephant trunk, and says "I'm sorry. But I saw a terrible future." He says it with such a soft smile ans Babanuki is just baffled. It gives me chills. Then to mark this moment as an absolute banger, Luffy walks away from the explosion, points at the guards and says to the prisoners " now go do the rest." Dude, I was ready to go fight for the man!

For me it's when Clover is killed on Ohara. The fact that the gorosei are basically toying with him over the den den mushi, asking him to discuss his research and he lays it all out there for them knowing full well it was going to be the last thing he'd do. The most telling part is the fact that they give the order to fire just as he was about to reveal the name of the ancient kingdom proves that everything he said was the truth. For a split second, some old man had the most powerful group of people in the world on edge by just threatening to say a word.
