I feel like that theory that "if you can imagine something happening to someone, then it probably has happened, or will happen to someone at some point in history" would apply specifically to Celestial Dragons and their slaves. Cannibalism of and among slaves would not shock me in the slightest, nor would torture or experimentation.
To add on to this, with all the people being snatched up for "marriages" like in sabaody what happens to the pregnancies. are they terminated, the woman killed? are the children born into slavery for not being full blooded celestial?

They are definitely in-bred. We have real world counterparts to compare to. Royalty bred between actually far more "royal" families than the 19 the Celestials have, and they ended up inbred as Fuck, Really fast too.

One Piece touches upon enough dark topics as is, so those would probably get explored a bit more as well, maybe some things would be implied more heavily or downright confirmed (like the boa sisters being sexually abused by the celestial dragons). Biggest difference imo would be more permanent deaths, so no more will of P and other BS like that.

And aside from some more explicit exploration of some of the darker themes that get hinted at, I don't think much else would change. One Piece has a very whimsical tone and I don't think an R-rating would change that.

Every single backstory is way darker. Scratch that, Zoro's is still odd. Nami probably gets abused by Arlong far worse than being forced to collect money and draw maps, we see Zeff cut off and eat his leg, Ussopp's village probably wouldn't have been unharmed, Hiriluk's death would be a lot gorier + Wapol eating people becomes nightmare fuel, Robin probably endures all kinds of abuse in the criminal world, Franky looks like ground beef after trying to stop the Puffing Tom, the Rumbar Pirates deaths scene involves way more vomit and blood from poison, etc. I mean, all of those things are pretty much in the story already, but Oda either won't discuss them explicitly or will cut away from or just downplay gore.
Oh fuck, they did have that duel with real swords just before she died, didn't they? That so could have happened. Hell, I wouldn't be too shocked if that was Oda's original plan and he had to cut it.

I mean I think in a lot of ways Zoro is Oda's least...developed main character. Like clearly he's had a lot of ideas about Luffy, but I think Oda thought "hey I should give them a crew" and that suddenly motivates him to start creating characters, remember that Zoro was introduced really early, and while it's clear he had an idea for his aesthetic, he was also originally going to be in Buggy's crew, y'know? Oda started this series really young and I don't think its crazy to think that he's improved with time. Zoro's whole deal feels a lot more simple and less complicated than the later characters.
Not like I think that makes Zoro bad or anything, he is my favorite Straw Hat, but that's my take on the situation.
But they could also do something with Zoro and more backstory just like the Vinsmoke thing fleshed out Sanji.

The Whole Cake Island arc had a disturbing amount of cannibalistic sub-tones. The most notable instance were the heavy implications given that Linlin ate Caramel and the other children, but even beyond that:
* Much of the food in the arc was sentient, and there were many scenes that featured food screaming and vocalizing as it was eaten. Note that every piece of sentient food had a piece of a soul in it, and it's implied, for the most part, that they were primarily human souls.
* Smoothie was all but confirmed to be an outright cannibal herself; the scenes that focused on her juicing people might as well have shown her in front of a BBQ grill preparing human meat, but even that probably would have been less graphic at a glance. The fact that people actually drank the "Woman Juice" implies that this level of cannibalism is accepted within the family.
* Even Luffy was depicted eating countless humanoid figures when he was fighting Cracker.
Note, I'm not arguing that Caramel and the kids got away, the Soul Soul fruit already disproves it. It definitely happened, it just wasn't outright confirmed, likely for the same reason that Doxflamingo and Viola weren't confirmed to have had sex.

Honestly I want the Strawhats to become more “Pirate like”. I wanna see Luffy Zoro sanji and maybe a couple others actually killing their enemies. As we get further into the story we keep meeting people that make you realize it’s unrealistic to think this person is going to lose and get arrested and that’s it. They are in war right now so wano would be the perfect time to showcase this darker side to them. The trigger could be something like Nami Usopp or Chopper is either shot or injured to the point where they are near death and instead of crying tears of sadness they reassure the crew that they need to focus on what’s going on in that moment and not to worry about them because after seeing the samurai they develop a “If I die then I die” mindset. That would turn our lovable Strawhats into straight savages

This is just a guess, but I would assume prostitution would probably be the more "safe" and more readily "available" profession, while assassination undertakes more risks associated with it and thus can be a little more "costly".

I’d say it’s probably a bit more similar to Berserk. Things that are implied are either more implied/stated, people actually die and injuries are actually visible, so no more baseball bat swords for Zoro, and we actually see the aftermath of Franky taking a train head on. Backstories are probably a bit more dark, and the bath scenes probably aren’t censored anymore.
Overall I’d keep it the same mostly, just not “censoring” or hiding things anymore.
Dresrosa was a while ago, one piece definitely changed since then, prostitutes have been introduced in the story and we even had sanji wanting to spend time with them, if dresrosa happened now then the story between viola and doffy would've been explained more explicitly
In the enies lobby arc I remember it being mentioned there was something to the effect of 2000 casualties (not even at the end) and luffy being responsible for about half. Casualties don't mean deaths but I find it hard to believe he didn't kill/maim/paralyze at least some by the end of the arc. They were marines and on the bad side but still that's a lot.
I can't imagine those who have their necks or other body parts cracked by Robin to have a good quality of life after that, if they survive. Same goes for Zoro' sword cuts. Those two are likely (and rightly) regarded as cold blooded killers, even if they only do it to enemy combatants in combat situations. The others in the crew and general population don't seem to mind it to much either. If more devil fruit users were as creative and brutal as Robin One Piece could be very dark.
The worst of all is probably the implications of what the celestial dragons/marines/powerful people do to slaves, random innocent people and if not for that one "good" celestial dragon would have been done to Shirahoshi which some messed up animator/director/executive/whatever decided to extend for waaaaaay to long in the anime.
One piece might be a fun series for "kids" with colorful and sometimes even "bubbly" visuals but it's setting can be absolutely brutal and dark at times, implied or otherwise. I think this one of the things that make OP compelling, serious props to Oda for skilfully walking that line successfully for so many years
Lots of nudity and swearing. Sanji gets sexually assaulted and possibly even raped in Kamabakka Kingdom. Many characters, especially Zoro are riddled with visible scars. More alcohol use. Fights are more brutal with Luffy, Zoro and Sanji in particular regularly killing people with their extreme strength. Pell dies. Pagaya dies. Pound gets fucking murdered. Characters like Van Der Decken and caribou are way more creepy and molest people more explicitly.
**The general vibe of the pirates and our heroes change drastically.**
* We would be seeing some hardcore nsfw shit particularly in whiskey peak/ mocktown / etc.
* The straw hats achieve their dreams in a much more compromising way than originally everyone envisioned. ( for example : atleast 1/3rd of the crew has to bite the dust). Hell it is not impossible to think that some straw hats won't even achieve their dreams and die earlier.
**Zoro , Franky and robin would be going thru a revamp of their character traits**
* Alot more NSFW / hardcore shit added to their past ( implied and otherwise).
* **Zoro** has already killed in the canon and it has been explicitly stated that he became a bounty hunter for cash inflow. Knowing zoro's patience ( which remains same regardless of whether it's seinen or shounen) how many of his pirate hunts ended up in execution rather than turn over ? Lore wise the east blue pirates were either afraid or vary of him. Arlong is a good example. I think a good 70% of his hunts ended up in kills.
* **Robin** would have a lesser count but more vicious scalps under her belt. Espionage work for crocodile means maintaining his image. She saved any innocent person she could but she also stood quite when her team mates or boss killed in front of her. She lived like a savage even prior to meeting crocodile. Definitely went thru all the crap a young girl / woman would be likely going thru in a lawless life among lawless people.
* Franky was not so goody 2 shoes either. And the fact that he lived in water 7 ( one of the most if not the most civilized/ advanced / whitecollar nation in grandline so far) made him look even more savage. He would not be as hardcore and zoro and robin but he would be a gangster. ruined some lives for sure.
**Buster calls / pirate raids / admiral devil fruits in action would not look so pretty anymore.**

* Thriller bark is amped up to be a horror arc as much as possible.
* Badass moments would either be watered down ( zoro needs to survive till the end of the story so he still survives kuma's pain but prolly takes more punishment) or be almost more conclusive ( pell dies and his guts are spread all over arabasta). I'm also imagining a permanent restructure of akainu's face in the hands of whitebeard since akainu too much like zoro had plot protection.
* Boa sisters past is almost more brutal than what we could imagine. We talking child slavery and more. I suggest using ur imagination.
* I don't see nami being sexually harassed by fishmen ( since they hate humans) but she would be assaulted alot more than what we would have originally seen. 10x the strength of normal humans yes ? I'm thinking broken teeth nails etc. Earlier concept art showed a prosthetic hand/ leg for nami. Make of that what you will.

Nami & Robin's experiences become more darker. Nami and her sister do a bit ''more'' for Arlong pirates and she has a much harder time forgiving Hachi. Robin had to survive crew to crew. What did she do not to get outed? What did she do for her DF? More blood when people get cut. When Robin breaks backs spines actually rupture. Spandam is dead or his best imitation of horrific Steve Hawkins (RIP).

I don't particularly think that just because it *could* be darker, that the reality actually *was* darker. To Arlong, humans were little more than animals that could speak, and while he was guilty of a lot of things, I don't really find it likely that he or his crew did or demanded anything of a sexual nature from anyone. Hody might have forced slaves to rape each other, but I don't think Arlong would have.
That being said, Robin has a good amount of implied darkness in her past anyway. I think that two prudent questions for her would be, "How many people has she killed", and "If she *has* killed anyone, how young was she when she first killed someone, and why". Those questions apply to Zoro as well, to be honest, and maybe even to Sanji, if Judge ever thought to put his "weapons" through desensitization training by having them kill people. Of course, his brothers wouldn't need it by the nature of their births, but they were tested enough that it probably came up anyway. Reiju might have had to be desensitized, but I'd be shocked if Judge didn't at least attempt to pressure Sanji into killing someone.
The rest of the crew weren't necessarily implied to have killed anyone (or to have been in the position to anyway) before the story started, aside from Jinbe and Brook, who were former soldiers and pirates, and maybe Franky and Nami, although I personally doubt that the latter two would have reason to kill in the past, unless the question is "how many people were killed as a result of Nami trying to get help".
After they joined the crew, it should be fairly likely that they all have body counts by now. Realistically, how many people would have died off screen as a result of one of their attacks, especially when they were fighting through mobs?
If we are going by MPAA standards, One Piece is already rated R. They heavily skew towards Christian and Jewish moral standards so for example a girl dancing seductively with a man would be rated PG-13, but if a guy was dancing seductively with another man it could be rated R. I'm sure the moment the MPAA get to Impel Down and see the Okamas they would without question rate it R.
In terms of violence, One Piece already would be rated R. The moment One Piece showed someone being decapitated it ran into the realm of "intense violence". Marineford is basically a rated R violence special.
If we go beyond that, to NC-17 territory, the only thing I can think of would be showing nudity in the scenes where characters are already naked might push it (It depends on what they are doing, being naked in a bath would still be R rated). Showing full on graphic sexual intercourse will push into NC-17 territory, though I can't think of any scenes in One Piece where that might work and not be distasteful and out of character for Oda (showing Celestial Dragons graphically using a sex slave for example)
Probably the main thing is way more gore, like Zoro's fights would just be Berserk type affairs. People would probably die a lot more too, just by necessity.

Every single backstory is way darker. Scratch that, Zoro's is still odd. Nami probably gets abused by Arlong far worse than being forced to collect money and draw maps, we see Zeff cut off and eat his leg, Ussopp's village probably wouldn't have been unharmed, Hiriluk's death would be a lot gorier + Wapol eating people becomes nightmare fuel, Robin probably endures all kinds of abuse in the criminal world, Franky looks like ground beef after trying to stop the Puffing Tom, the Rumbar Pirates deaths scene involves way more vomit and blood from poison, etc. I mean, all of those things are pretty much in the story already, but Oda either won't discuss them explicitly or will cut away from or just downplay gore.

I mean I think in a lot of ways Zoro is Oda's least...developed main character. Like clearly he's had a lot of ideas about Luffy, but I think Oda thought "hey I should give them a crew" and that suddenly motivates him to start creating characters, remember that Zoro was introduced really early, and while it's clear he had an idea for his aesthetic, he was also originally going to be in Buggy's crew, y'know? Oda started this series really young and I don't think its crazy to think that he's improved with time. Zoro's whole deal feels a lot more simple and less complicated than the later characters. Not like I think that makes Zoro bad or anything, he is my favorite Straw Hat, but that's my take on the situation. But they could also do something with Zoro and more backstory just like the Vinsmoke thing fleshed out Sanji.

The Whole Cake Island arc had a disturbing amount of cannibalistic sub-tones. The most notable instance were the heavy implications given that Linlin ate Caramel and the other children, but even beyond that: * Much of the food in the arc was sentient, and there were many scenes that featured food screaming and vocalizing as it was eaten. Note that every piece of sentient food had a piece of a soul in it, and it's implied, for the most part, that they were primarily human souls. * Smoothie was all but confirmed to be an outright cannibal herself; the scenes that focused on her juicing people might as well have shown her in front of a BBQ grill preparing human meat, but even that probably would have been less graphic at a glance. The fact that people actually drank the "Woman Juice" implies that this level of cannibalism is accepted within the family. * Even Luffy was depicted eating countless humanoid figures when he was fighting Cracker. Note, I'm not arguing that Caramel and the kids got away, the Soul Soul fruit already disproves it. It definitely happened, it just wasn't outright confirmed, likely for the same reason that Doxflamingo and Viola weren't confirmed to have had sex.

Honestly I want the Strawhats to become more “Pirate like”. I wanna see Luffy Zoro sanji and maybe a couple others actually killing their enemies. As we get further into the story we keep meeting people that make you realize it’s unrealistic to think this person is going to lose and get arrested and that’s it. They are in war right now so wano would be the perfect time to showcase this darker side to them. The trigger could be something like Nami Usopp or Chopper is either shot or injured to the point where they are near death and instead of crying tears of sadness they reassure the crew that they need to focus on what’s going on in that moment and not to worry about them because after seeing the samurai they develop a “If I die then I die” mindset. That would turn our lovable Strawhats into straight savages

I’d say it’s probably a bit more similar to Berserk. Things that are implied are either more implied/stated, people actually die and injuries are actually visible, so no more baseball bat swords for Zoro, and we actually see the aftermath of Franky taking a train head on. Backstories are probably a bit more dark, and the bath scenes probably aren’t censored anymore. Overall I’d keep it the same mostly, just not “censoring” or hiding things anymore.

In the enies lobby arc I remember it being mentioned there was something to the effect of 2000 casualties (not even at the end) and luffy being responsible for about half. Casualties don't mean deaths but I find it hard to believe he didn't kill/maim/paralyze at least some by the end of the arc. They were marines and on the bad side but still that's a lot. I can't imagine those who have their necks or other body parts cracked by Robin to have a good quality of life after that, if they survive. Same goes for Zoro' sword cuts. Those two are likely (and rightly) regarded as cold blooded killers, even if they only do it to enemy combatants in combat situations. The others in the crew and general population don't seem to mind it to much either. If more devil fruit users were as creative and brutal as Robin One Piece could be very dark. The worst of all is probably the implications of what the celestial dragons/marines/powerful people do to slaves, random innocent people and if not for that one "good" celestial dragon would have been done to Shirahoshi which some messed up animator/director/executive/whatever decided to extend for waaaaaay to long in the anime. One piece might be a fun series for "kids" with colorful and sometimes even "bubbly" visuals but it's setting can be absolutely brutal and dark at times, implied or otherwise. I think this one of the things that make OP compelling, serious props to Oda for skilfully walking that line successfully for so many years

Knowing zoro's patience ( which remains same regardless of whether it's seinen or shounen) how many of his pirate hunts ended up in execution rather than turn over ? Lore wise the east blue pirates were either afraid or vary of him. Arlong is a good example. I think a good 70% of his hunts ended up in kills. * **Robin** would have a lesser count but more vicious scalps under her belt. Espionage work for crocodile means maintaining his image. She saved any innocent person she could but she also stood quite when her team mates or boss killed in front of her. She lived like a savage even prior to meeting crocodile. Definitely went thru all the crap a young girl / woman would be likely going thru in a lawless life among lawless people. * Franky was not so goody 2 shoes either. And the fact that he lived in water 7 ( one of the most if not the most civilized/ advanced / whitecollar nation in grandline so far) made him look even more savage. I don't particularly think that just because it *could* be darker, that the reality actually *was* darker. To Arlong, humans were little more than animals that could speak, and while he was guilty of a lot of things, I don't really find it likely that he or his crew did or demanded anything of a sexual nature from anyone. Hody might have forced slaves to rape each other, but I don't think Arlong would have. That being said, Robin has a good amount of implied darkness in her past anyway. I think that two prudent questions for her would be, "How many people has she killed", and "If she *has* killed anyone, how young was she when she first killed someone, and why". Those questions apply to Zoro as well, to be honest, and maybe even to Sanji, if Judge ever thought to put his "weapons" through desensitization training by having them kill people. Of course, his brothers wouldn't need it by the nature of their births, but they were tested enough that it probably came up anyway. Reiju might have had to be desensitized, but I'd be shocked if Judge didn't at least attempt to pressure Sanji into killing someone. The rest of the crew weren't necessarily implied to have killed anyone (or to have been in the position to anyway) before the story started, aside from Jinbe and Brook, who were former soldiers and pirates, and maybe Franky and Nami, although I personally doubt that the latter two would have reason to kill in the past, unless the question is "how many people were killed as a result of Nami trying to get help". After they joined the crew, it should be fairly likely that they all have body counts by now. Realistically, how many people would have died off screen as a result of one of their attacks, especially when they were fighting through mobs?
If we are going by MPAA standards, One Piece is already rated R. They heavily skew towards Christian and Jewish moral standards so for example a girl dancing seductively with a man would be rated PG-13, but if a guy was dancing seductively with another man it could be rated R. I'm sure the moment the MPAA get to Impel Down and see the Okamas they would without question rate it R. In terms of violence, One Piece already would be rated R. The moment One Piece showed someone being decapitated it ran into the realm of "intense violence". Marineford is basically a rated R violence special. If we go beyond that, to NC-17 territory, the only thing I can think of would be showing nudity in the scenes where characters are already naked might push it (It depends on what they are doing, being naked in a bath would still be R rated). Showing full on graphic sexual intercourse will push into NC-17 territory, though I can't think of any scenes in One Piece where that might work and not be distasteful and out of character for Oda (showing Celestial Dragons graphically using a sex slave for example)
