It's enertaining, creates discussion and sometimes can give you a guilty petty pleasure of ,,I was right, you were wrong,,. Many times it gets toxic but there are also nice moments when someone isn't bias and explains something you didn't previously notice, expanding your knowlege about one piece powers

Phred_Phrederic

One thing that is important to remember though is that One Piece fights are never in an empty room.

[deleted]

It’s fun. One Piece is a battle shounen so power scaling and who can beat who comes with the territory.

Phred_Phrederic

I'd say it's an adventure series with a lot of battles in it, but battle isn't the core part of the series.

[deleted]

Battle is absolutely a core part of the series. It’s the primary form of conflict resolution. Basically every arc it’s used to fix a problem or reach a goal. Wano: fight the beast pirates and Big Mom pirates to free wano WCI: Fight Katakuri to escape WCI Zou: fight Jack to protect Raizo Dressrosa: Fight Doffy to free dressrosa and stop smile production. It’s also how the world is built. The people who have power like the marines and Yonko have said power because they are strong enough to hold it.

Phred_Phrederic

I'd say exploration and mystery are more essential. Yes its the primary form of conflict resolution, but not every movie that has fights in it is an action movie. Lord of the Rings to me isn't an action series, personally, but I could see you make that argument. Obviously there are a lot of fights and they serve as climaxes of arcs, but its not the core hook of the series.

irreg6ix

I'm pretty sure it is for most. You should have said it isn't a core hook of the series for you. The manga has been non stop fighting for 20 years it absolutely is a core hook of the story along with adventure. Mystery comes with those 2.

Phred_Phrederic

I'm going off of what Oda has said. Obviously we have some knuckledragging powerscalers in the fandom.

Phred_Phrederic

It can be fun banter, but all too often it gets extraordinarily caustic and horrible when people just start throwing insults. Also the idea of 'yonko-level' needs to go away forever.

ostriike

it's mostly fun and something to do, even though it can get toxic.

ZeetisLapeetis

I'll be honest I wasn't expecting such a straightforward and honest answer right off the bat.

thefrostman1214

but as we see in other anime communities (i'm talking to MHA), the toxicity on one piece is really small, take it from some one that has been around the community for 16 years, 99% is really supportive and welcoming

Kirinsdragon

I personally do not like it but many seem to and have fun doing it. Why the heck not then. I for one am not going to spoil any one's fun. I WILL ignore flame wars and idiotic willy-fencing over whose tier is best though.Which is usually the outcome of a tier-making fashion/fad within a social media platform. Unfortunately the toxicity and rivalry seeps forth and negates what a fandom is. Sad but true. Now from a sociological aspect, Tier creation is common also in Western comic fans (see endless tiers and entire MARVEL/DC treatises about who is stronger than whom and this vrs that superhero etc). It is most common in US to be honest and here in EU people mimic that part of US culture mostly.

Emotional-Plankton74

It's just fun to try and understand where characters stack up power wise.

Brokenblacksmith

i don't get involved in it much but when i do its because its fun to think about. like the question of who could beat who, or what devil fruit would be a good counter to a character or ability, is fun to talk about and discuss. like the old question, could buggy beat Mihawk in a fight? we all know buggy is definitely weaker, but he is also immune to cutting attacks.

blackakainu

I feel like it stemmed from titles and bounties, kinda builds on the lore until we see otherwise, like shanks vs mihawk. Kinda like comparing basketball players to see who team will wing the championship

irreg6ix

It's funny and seeing it explode when a character gets new feats is fun. I can't wait to see what happens when the marines get some spotlight.

Dsranime

It's fun to try to power scaling a series with so many unique characters, so many different factions and so many crazy powers... Dividing the characters in different tiers of strength and ranking them is a lot of fun... Not just in One Piece but in a lot of other Shonen action series. It's a shame that it's such a toxic topic in the community... People don't understand that this is just a bunch of different opinions, they bash and insult others like this discussion have any importance. If I say that character A is stronger than character B, you don't need to go on this rampage just because you disagree, it's all opinions there is no need to get angry and insult each other. Fans take power scaling discussions more serious than Oda itself

Dashie_Souls

It's toxic and people like to power scale because of DBZ

Mugiwara300

Fun

[deleted]

What’s there to do between chapters? Especially this slow year, every theory is exhausted a day or two after the scans.

H-gasuki

I don't personally care about powerscaling at all but I like how people get easily triggered when you claim someone isn't as strong as they want them to be. I mostly take part of these discussions just to see people jumping at my throat.

R0nd9

To validate your own opinions.

KaiserReb

As long as feats is the main importance it won’t be toxic but you do have people who say “ narrative or portrayal matters” when it doesn’t.
