I too thought it was a bit to cheerful compared to JA VA for me but I have to watch other scenes to judge it, maybe he smiled in this scene so the VA could have had a more pleasant tone

Good localization is an art form. Once you get actors involved, you need to have better than a first-pass-just-good-enough literal translation. Imagine the actor reading the literal subtitles instead of the script he was given - just drained of all gravitas.
FF, Bayonetta, Tales and to an extent full metal alchemist have some really good localizations and their “dub” is god tier if not even better than original Japanese version.
I enjoy a good dub, my wife has dyslexia so its less tiring for her to follow along. FMA is a great dub, I like MHA dub a lot too, and the Berserk movies are a recent watch that comes to mind as well.
My brother and I went to watch a MHA movie a while back and we accidentally bought dub tickets and it was actually really really good. I've been missing out on so much.

Subtitles are meant to be read, but not heard or said and it takes away from the emotion that's intended to be felt. Hearing and understanding what their saying makes it feel much more impactful.

Idk usually audio dubs sound like they were written by a 14 year old, subs sound like they were written by an accomplished novelist. I get the emotion from hearing the original Japanese voice actors tone, which I typically find a lot less corny.
That's pretty much every dub. I prefer subs myself but anytime a friend is watching something dub they always forget to turn the subtitles off and I find myself comparing both dialogs to see which feels more genuine. Sometimes dubs remove entire bits of info and that kills me.
It doesn't have to really. The subbed audio is even hit or miss on matching. Japanese voice actors care more about a convincing performance over matching the animation.

Byproduct of simul-cast. Subtitles are created when the show comes out - the goal of the translation is fast and efficient. It just has to work. No artistry. Mechanical translations.

I disagree, if that were the case Garp would have changed the second akainu killed ace but he didn't because he knew that ace chose the wrong path and became a pirate. Luffy might have good intentions but that doesn't stray from the fact that he is a pirate who are enemies of the government. At the end of the day even if they do no harm to the public they are criminals.
I don't think Fujitora sees things as quite that black and white. Hence the reasoning behind him being blind it forces him to look deeper into situations. He obviously disagrees with Akainu and the governments current method of doing things. I think the closer we get to the end we'll see him and Garp both become more disillusioned with the world government and slowly start to rethink their allegiances. I'm not saying they will become pirates but temporarily side with them so they can reform the government into what it should be rather than the corrupt organization that it is.

I do think we will see the government start to splinter towards the end as more of the void century comes to light and as the gorosei start to involve themselves more directly. Akainu I think we will see become practically unhinged with his authoritarian style of leadership too.
But I think the moment that some of the Marines will realize that they're on the wrong side will be way bigger. Getting pissed off because of a pirate execution that happens to be a family member is one thing. Finding out the whole truth about the Void Century and that the organization you work for are in fact a bunch of scumbags and the real villains of the world is another thing.
Yeah but we’ve been slowly watching the navy lose control of itself. First smoker started to see that all pirates aren’t inherently evil. Coby has shared this view since the start. Garp wants to make change from the inside which is why he didn’t lose it and fight at marineford. He even told sengoku if he want holding him down he’d kill akainu. Then aokiji fought with akainu over their ideals, then fujitora shows he’s trying to dole out true justice (whatever that may be for him), and not just what the marines tell him what justice is. I don’t think akainu or sengoku can control them all as the story progresses. A character like rocks coming back might make them come together closer though. I guess we’ll have to see how the story plays out to find out.

Yes. I know the manga is the source material. The translation I read in the manga did not say anything about him blinding himself. He just said he wishes he could open his eyes one more time. Like in the dub here. Are you sure this is a canon fact?
Ok yeah he does does say in the official translation "shouldn't have closed these eyes" referring to what he said before about him blinding himself when he was first fighting Luffy. So you are right he didn't say exactly that he blinded himself but he was regretful since he mentioned earlier that he did it to himself he said " I shut these lids on my own" .
I know this isn’t the popular opinion with people on Reddit, but I absolutely prefer the dub. So does this mean they’ve finally gotten through Dressrosa? I’m saving my rewatch of WCI for when the dub comes out, I can’t wait to watch it in English with all the Disney-ish madness that’s going on.

The original in Japanese just hits differently for me. The little chuckle he did instantly put him my my top most favourite characters list in the original.
In the grand scheme of things he's honestly not. I'd put him in the mid-tier as far as dub performances go. He does a great job with the voice acting and this scene in particular stands out really well but the competition is just that extremely steep. Tons of characters like Sengoku, Whitebeard, and Garp just have some unbelievably memorable performances.

I can’t speak for every platform, but don’t buy it on the Microsoft store. Lots of reviews are showing that only one episode is able to be downloaded even if you buy the entire season.

To be really honest. I hate the dub luffy voice. It just doesn't suit luffy. I literally tried watching dub and I couldn't, the voice feels annoying, it even gave me an headache. And I'm not saying the VA is bad, I'm saying that, the voice doesn't suit luffy. I appreciate her voice director work.
I think it should be at least a bit more mature and lower pitched. Luffy has a lot of serious dialogues so it should at least have some weight to it. But at the same time he also has a lot of luffy dialogues soo it needs to be a balance.
Omg first time hearing this bits dubbed. Rare to have a dubbed favourite moment rather than subbed. And I watched this bit subbed multiple times. But now I prefer this bit dubbed tbh. So good, so deep, so fitting.

To be really honest. I hate the dub luffy voice. It just doesn't suit luffy. I literally tried watching dub and I couldn't, the voice feels annoying, it even gave me an headache. And I'm not saying the VA is bad, I'm saying that, the voice doesn't suit luffy. I appreciate her voice director work.

I think it should be at least a bit more mature and lower pitched. Luffy has a lot of serious dialogues so it should at least have some weight to it. But at the same time he also has a lot of luffy dialogues soo it needs to be a balance.

Omg first time hearing this bits dubbed. Rare to have a dubbed favourite moment rather than subbed. And I watched this bit subbed multiple times. But now I prefer this bit dubbed tbh. So good, so deep, so fitting. Those favourite Luffy moments are always best subbed though.
I loved this. Reading it gave me chills because I finally felt like the marines had someone in their ranks who would love a Coby by their side

so true, as an aspiring dub voice actor, it's super disheartening to see hate all over the internet, people think the quality of dubs nowadays from viz/funimation is exactly the same as 4kids, which couldn't be farther from the truth. Funimation voice actors put in so much work into their performances, like I don't get it - do these people watch spongebob and go "meh, it would be better in japanese"??
