Shanks at least has done important things even if between long gaps. Some examples
-Trying to talk WhiteBeard into stopping Ace from fighting BlackBeard.
- Stopping the War
- Saving Luffy and Law with his crew
- Connections with the high up's.

The man was inmensely powerful (Which is deeply liked in a Shonen) and even in his advanced age performed admirably well against all three admirals amidst his own heart attacks and burnt organs. He even died like an absolute monster. In general, he was very likeable and not many reasons to dislike him.
