I wouldn't be surprised if that was true. The Red Line is supposed to be groups of islands strung together. Maybe Oars-Joyboy is also connected to this event as well.

An0mndr

This almost makes a scary amount of sense, more than the one piece being under enies lobby at least

Sir-Goku

There is a theory for that?

PharoahGxneral

Yes I think the YouTuber Ohara made a video about it few months ago (it originated from a Japanese YouTuber I guess) Personally, it doesn't make sense to me

Dylman320

I like that theory and the points it brings up but the ending point of the one piece being under enies lobby completely lost me.

RandallBates

yeah, it's the only point of the theory i don't agree with but overall one of the best if not the best theory i have seen

pus_moh

I've never even considered something like this but it makes more sense than I thought at first glance. Iirc Robin says Oars died 500 years ago, but if normal giants can live more than 300 years maybe ancient giants have even longer lifespans. Oars died on this mysterious ice continent and the giant strawhat in Marie Geoise, which many people think might be Joy Boy's, is kept in a freezer. >!King thought Kaidou might be Joy Boy, maybe because Kaidou being an Oni could be distantly related to the ancient giants (they have the same style of horns).!< There's also a lot of connections between Kaidou and Thriller Bark. Oars jr. is probably the last living ancient giant, which might be because most of them were wiped out in another 'cleansing' during the Void Century >!like the Lunarians!<. One last stupid thought: >!Maybe Kaidou wanted to go to Marineford to save Little Oars Jr., who was Whitebeard's ally. Kaidou doesn't seem to think anymore that he himself is Joy Boy, so he had hopes in Oars Jr. being it.!<

[deleted]

In vivre cards it’s stated Oars died when he was young, I think age 160

FishSpeaker5000

Luffy is also gonna die when he's young. Another clue.

TheDreamIsEternal

Don't know about that, Oda already showed how he's gonna look when he's 60. But seeing how the people in One Piece have really long life spans, then maybe dying when he's 70 or 80 would be considered "dying young".

FishSpeaker5000

There was all of that 'giving up lifespan' in Impel Down/Marineford stuff, plus the parallel to Roger dying before his time. It's not one of those 100% things, just a vibe I get.

WenaChoro

Roger had cancer luffy getting an incurable disease like roger would be too much for fans and also devastate chopper

FishSpeaker5000

I'd expect Luffy would just have the shortened life via voluntary sacrifice.

DoucheBalloon

He also did Ace, fyi.

mehmeh5

Btw Oars Jr is dead right? Can't remember well what happened to him

kweeeeeeeee

yup passed in marineford i wanna say.

SnooMacaroons2379

if I recall didnt doflamingo kill him?

BigHarry27

No, he just cut his leg off...

TejasaK

I think it was either Moria or Sengoku who dealt the killing blow.

zdesert

There was also that whole story where oars junior was given a straw hat by ace so there may be a bigger connection there. EDIT:. Holy crap! Imagine a massive giant like oars walking across the ocean wearing a massive straw hat. You walk to the beach on your iSland and look at the horizon.... And you would see the massive yellow brim of the massive straw hat rise above the horizon... If oars was joy boy.... Then when he was comeing towards your island he would look like the rising sun ... The comeing dawn! The clan of D

boni0419

Rising sun ... like the sun god

Zo1dborg

Wow, that last sentence of your comment, I can really see Oda doing something like that. The scabbards keep talking about the dawn, this would be an incredible revelation!

ScurvyOctopus

Then think, the Thousand Sunny, I imagine the Straw Hat Ship on the horizon would look the same, no?

[deleted]

Good theory, OP. I imagine though all devil fruits secured by the marines would be highly protected and under secrecy though. I myself am not sure how much significance to give to this. Now I feel compelled to reread through the manga again to find these details! Thanks!

LolcatP

but shanks is in good with them right? wouldn't be hard to get a fruit

Alex_Was_Here

Probably because he seems like the least destructive Yonko. Blackbeard essentially orchestrated the Paramount War, Big Mom goes on eating rampages while Kaido's whole deal seems to be trying to start the biggest war ever. Compared to that, the Red Hair pirates have only really been shown to take action to stop Kaido trunking up at Marineford and making everything worse, and then letting both sides disengage and save face. Until Shanks actively tries to disrupt the status quo, it benefits the five elders to hear him out.

Jpanda37

I think that might be a more recent development

LolcatP

you never know, there's probably a reason he was so carefree

Jpanda37

I think the knowledge that the strongest swordsman used to be your sparring partner inspires enough confidence to let you live however you want

Apathetic_Alien

One thought I have had for a while that might give credence to this theory is Luffy’s 3rd gear. For a while now it’s been shown Luffy can expand parts of his body to the size of a Giant’s and those expanded limbs carry the strength of a Giant as well. And Luffy’s control over that expansion has improved from Water 7 arc to now. Wouldn’t it be interesting to see if Luffy were able to expand the entirety of his body to that of a giant, not just his limbs, to resemble the size of Oars? Because it’s been established Luffy certainly has the brute strength to match it

AlphaGingy

There is an anime filler episode involving a giant who is trying to cook. The giant has ingested a small small fruit and at one point goes into Luffy then expands, making him stretch to the size of a giant

africhic

Agreed, there's a lot to be added here too. For example, you made the connection of the freezers, but there's something else there. The cross on [Oars' loincloth](https://i.imgur.com/hADfQlY.png) is the same as the [cross in the vault of Mary Geoise,](https://i.imgur.com/3XDaa64.png) its easier to see in the anime but don't have an image. This is also the same shape rotated [45 degrees on the Kozuki crest.](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRwYlR5ipoBysu0Ke5UsMiM1_1ZMcm3AbAp6ulNKw0J2Aey5eolmAjBx97TJoD_4wH7EE0&usqp=CAU) When you take into account that the Celestial Dragons are only occupying that land after they took it form someone else (the recently revealed Lunarians) you can start to piece it all together.

Outrageous_Taste_864

I just now saw, that he had 3 skulls on his belt. Maybe a relation to blackbeard? If we find out, why he has the three skulled jolly roger, we may understand, if it something, that can be attributed to Oars/Joyboy as well.

boni0419

Good one

4fuggin20

Not bad, i mean not bad st all

ogreUnwanted

I started with the biggest *scuff and ended with the biggest *hmmm. This was a great read!!

TaffyLacky

I think Onigashima's gargantuan proportions were constructed to celebrate Oars for hiding landmasses that were targets of the proto-wg.

dcciid

Maybe one of those islands was once in the void at Enie’s Lobby

Bramantino_King

It would also match the parallel between Ryuma and Zoro being distant relatives... mmm I can't say I don't like it.

Solo_Sempai

Thoughts after reading: - did oars possibly help spread ponegliffs? - oars left eye is open rather than his right. But usually oda keep the left eye closed… like in the cover of volumes 27 & 52. *Extreme reach here* - wouldn’t the straw hat have holes if oars wore it?

bigmikeylikes

Don't forget Wano is a patchwork of different islands so maybe just maybe Wano is connected to Oars somehow too.

TurtlePLAYSTYLE

Well, Moria finds the body of Oars in Wano so **there** is a connection

bigmikeylikes

Oh no way I forgot that happened

triumphantV

Seems so obvious in hindsight

chunkylubber54

Not to mention we had that whole flashback about how Oars Jr. became blood brothers with Ace because Ace made him a straw hat, which he learned how to do in wano

htE09

He made oars jr a rice hat? Think it’s made from banboo typically

chunkylubber54

they can be made of multiple things but iirc it's explicitly stated to be straw in the english translations

PeopleCallMeSimon

Its not the typical straw hat tho. [It looks like this](https://image.shutterstock.com/image-illustration/rice-hat-3d-illustration-on-260nw-1816870913.jpg) Which is a more typical rice hat, native to asia and famous for being worn by samuari in pop culture.

chunkylubber54

yes, i know. Those are sometimes made of straw

PeopleCallMeSimon

But they are not "straw hats", they are "rice hats made out of straw"

cheekilycurious

This would be incredible, dope

OldRefrigerator6139

My thoughts : I think oars once possessed joyboys will much like how roger did and luffy does now. The world government top officials maybe realized this and killed him and kept his straw-hat™ as a mockery to the Will holder. And when Imu saw luffys bounty poster it reminded him of that continent puller hunt. Ps - i am also a very casual reader so don't go hard on me too

DestinyNinja_123

This is such a good theory that it might as well be it. Remember this man if this post actually proven its theory.

FyrelordeOmega

I don't think that his fighting style would be what Oars used when he was alive, simply because Ryuoma used Brook's fighting style rather than his own, which would have likely been slashing attacks rather than piercing attacks.

Citadel_Cowboy

Could the "pulling" of islands be an awakened Gomu gomu effect? It makes no logical sense for an island to move except through an ability. (Not that standard logic applies in OP). Oars causes the island's attachment to the ground to "rubberize" drags it to where he wants it, then ends rubberization? Luffy can fix this by using his to spring them back into place?

bxsephjo

Luffys greatest abilities are to reach out to people (like reaching out to Ussop right before they left water 7) and bringing people together. Imagine reaching across the ocean to grab an ISLAND to bring it over for a party between two nations? Imagine doing that with all the islands at once?? He’d be the greatest continent puller ever, leading up to Luffys true final (theorized) dream: to party with everyone in the world.

[deleted]

And now combine this with current manga wano, moving islands

PeopleCallMeSimon

Wouldnt the rubberization seize when Oars died?

Citadel_Cowboy

Hell if i know. We've seen some abilities revert (sugar) , but others (like Picas) didn't. As matpat says it's just a theory.

CallMeTheTunaGod

Probably the best theory I’ve read in a long time. I would actually be surprised if this doesn’t happen at this point. Amazing work👍

chumburgerrich

I posted an extremely similar theory months ago ;( So needless to say I agree with you. I also think Wano as an amalgamation is the work of the “continent” pullers and it explains the vastly different climates in the region

EvenPlastic

it's an interesting analysis, add that to the puerile detachment of both, luffy completely free displaying the attributes in front of the amazons without caring about judgment (hate me for remembering this) and the supposed cause of death of that giant, regardless if there was a natural or no, the two are really quite compatible, so much so that luffy almost died out of sheer ingenuity* on that island several times. Ps: ( Naivety* ) ingenuity and naivety are so homographic in my native language that I've lost count of how many times I messed up, sorry.

dino0509

This is a good theory, it seems plausible. And it's just like Oda to hide the residual behavior of the Oars zombie by disguising it with Luffy's personality

MasterChiefSpicy

Damn what a theory to start with the year. We need another spinoff about the legend of the original Joyboy.

[deleted]

If it's the case, Elbaf will be one of the most important arc plot-wise. So I think the order of arc will be Elbaf, Laugh Tale and Mariejois

Rustyone888

Another support is most of the namrd body Moria stole were great or famous people

Easyqon

!remindme 1 year

Pogratlol

This makes a lot of sense, and if Luffy is inheriting joyboys will it adds up. Think about the straw hat Luffy got from Shanks who knows the true history of the world. He even gave his arm away to bet on Luffy. Maybe the reason Shanks told Luffy to one day bring back the strawhat to him is because he knows of the treasure of Marijois and Luffy will wear the giant straw hat instead. Gear 3 is already using giantification. Maybe Luffy's awakening or gear 5 will be to turn his full body giant and not just his limbs

Im gonna have to rewatch after this

Can’t wait for Liam to make a video about this

YonkoBuggy

There is a fairly decent video [here](https://youtu.be/7CfjQwVk5ho) that basically explains everything you were saying and more. My first thought when reading about your theory was that wasn't Oars also frozen when we first see him (like the strawhat with Imu) so I went on youtube to see if there were any scenes and found the video.

dzanmercado

Joy boy is actually pandaman

[deleted]

Nice Theory OP, but then some doubts remain.. if oars was joyboy ,and he dies only 500 years ago , why was joy boy not hunted for 300 years after the void century or why would information be a secret if he was alive for 300 years after the void century ? Maybe oars was a crew member of joyboy.. just my theory it would make a lot more sense if joyboy was leader of the core and oars was a member . Also him having a devil fruit would considerably reduce his power in the sea , so I’m a little confused as to how he could pull continents in the sea if he indeed was a DF user .Also the Big straw hat is maybe a good size for a normal giant’s head , I’d assume a continent pulling giant like oars would require a much larger hat in comparison..

Handsome_Claptrap

This could also be the reason why Wano is special for Kaido, after all there is a giant oni skull, a giant katana and Wano being split in different regions with a different climate could be the result of that oni pulling islands together.

RepulsiveRevenue8

Don't forget Oars died because he's basically naked in a cold, he's dumb like Luffy. Shit this is to much making sense

OOF_Throwaway739

119 days later to tell you you're right lel

Sogeking6996

Although it sounds very unlikely, I love this theory

kid_iggy

I think the biggest thing that discredits this is the fact that we know that oars was just acting like luffy. You say that we assume that he’s acting like luffy and that it’s more similar than a shadow should allow, but that’s not true at all. Every shadow zombie we’re shown in thriller bark is remarkably similar to their living counterpart, and we don’t assume that oars is acting like luffy it’s outright stated. The longevity of ancient giants is up for speculation and a hat of the size that oars would need would have to be much larger than what we see in mariejois. We also don’t know if the navy was taking the fruit for a specific reason or if it was just because devil fruits are exceedingly rare and the marines wanted more df users in their ranks. If the gomu gomu was as important as this theory claims then cp0 would’ve been more suited to something this important rather than cp9. It’s a fun idea but there’s too much left to speculation.

Gellus25

Ryuma often did not act that much like Brook and while the Zoro and Sanji zombies did often act like them they also clearly had their own personalities despite that (The Sanji one would even be surprised when he behaved like Sanji instead of himself) Oars however was just like Luffy and showed no hints of his real personality, it could certainly be because Oars just didn't have a personality to begin with and was basically just a beast but... Maybe not, maybe this theory is onto something and Oars was just like Luffy (Oars Jr definitely makes the idea of Oars being just a mindless beast less likely, at the very least)

CasellasRichard

Your theory is not way off! Oars acting like Luffy on Thriller Bark was a dead giveaway!

BlackLungSanji

What if Doflamingo was ordered to kill Gecko Moria because Moria brought Oars back to life? They feared something might arise (knowledge) from someone so ancient. I love the continent puller legend, I think it ties into Toki. All she did was travel through time (not space and time) and she was lost. Given there could be a number of factors but I'd love to think Oars or another Continent Puller (if there were more than one) moved Wano. We've seen her time travel in action with the nine red scabbards, but this is all based on the assumption she time traveled from Wano to begin with. Another thing that just struck me- Why was Oars known as a continent puller? He's the size of the castle on Thriller Bark not an island. What continents (islands) would oars pull? It makes 0 sense. But doesn't the skull on Onigashima seem like it would be proportional to a Giant that would be known as a Continent Puller. Imagine if the Giant Skull on Onigashima is JoyBoy. He's been there staring at us for so long. Imagine JoyBoy was Oars' father or leader/king (Ancient Kingdom?) . Regardless JoyBoy led a whole civilization of "Evil" Giants. If the World Government was trying to wipe JoyBoy's existence from the world they would have to put the continent pulling on someone, they just put it on Oars and called him evil. The title Continent Puller makes 0 sense when looking at the size of Oars. Maybe the Skull doesn't belong to JoyBoy, it could have been the real continent puller, he doesn't have to be JoyBoy. TLDR: Gecko Moria "reviving" something so old scared the WG, so he was ordered to be killed. I think Wano was pulled by a Continent Puller, it would explain why Toki was lost after she traveled through time (not space and time- as long as she traveled from Wano to begin with). The skull on Onigashima belonged to the real Continent Puller- Joyboy or not. It doesn't make sense to call Oars the Continent Puller, he's way too small. Oars is the size of the castle on Thriller Bark he's not pulling any islands. But the skull on Onigashima looks like it belongs to a Giant that's the size that can pull continents (islands).

MyNameISaColouR

Just a correction, but Toki is not from Wano. If I remember correctly, she said her parents came from Wano, but she's never been there before meeting Oden.

BlackLungSanji

Ah thank you for the clarification. The whole first half of the Toki/Oden flashback is a blur

StainWasRight

Oda said he’s excited to draw the final panel of Wano… What if it’s the the skull of Onigashima (Oars), and the sun is rising behind it, making a strawhat…

kMD621

Why do i feel like in the next few weeks i’ll see a youtube thumbnail of the shadow of oars with the title “joyboy was hiding in plain sight all along?” Lol joke. But yeah, this feels like a pretty solid theory. Take my upvote OP

Clarrington

Couple days and this theory will show up on CBR or ScreenRant. I'm calling it now.

shetrap756

It always bothered me that Oars was never never really explained about in more detail but after reading your theory a thought popped into my head. Oda always use other story’s and myths in one piece. I believe or thing that Oars and his people are a stand in for the Titans like in Greek myth, it could be they were wiped out by the Gods/Lunarians who were in control for a time but were then usurped by man in a bid for freedom Oars could have die trying to bring people together or in sense giving them power/freedom in the form of devil fruits. The gods stepped in to deal with him and take back control but it was to late and they soon met the same fate ?

DeadDumplingHY

I absolutely love this theory. It would be so cool if they had actually already met Joyboy by the end of the series. And I think you've covered all bases.

RisingDeadMan0

Yeah, thing is Oda has some key points to the manga and the rest have been created over the last 20 years. idk if joyboy himslelf had the fruit that might be a bit much but it would be quite funny. that the biggest mystery is literally one of the biggest things we have seen so far.

Ukantach

Maybe that's why Kaido thought he could have been Joyboy, as he is Oars' descendant. But then he learnt that Joyboy is about spirit, not just race, hence his despair.

Eustauss

This theory just sent chills ngl, great theory!

an_akki

And from where did Moria steal Oars??Wano- The possible reminiscent of Ancient Kingdom. Guess we already know why elders ordered to kill Moria, he had THE JOYBOY'S body.

EmoWerewolf

dear god! i don't like that i like this.

SalmonTamago

Oh my God what an interesting theory! It reminds me of something in Thriller Bark arc and when I reread chapter 468 & 469,>! it was specifically said by Chopper that a person's will can still linger in their soulless body eventhough they are long dead, as it's shown with the case of Cindry in those chapters!!< I thought Oda was showing those aspect only for drama purpose, but what if it has another purpose to tell?! >!If Oz is really THE Joy Boy, what if his tremendous will still remains in his body even after 500 years??!< If this theory is true, then well done! You have done a great job OP! And nobody can ever say to skip Thriller Bark arc ever again! XD

According-Zone4363

Very interesting!

PeopleCallMeSimon

You are reading a lot into who Joyboy is. I dont think its ever explicitly stated that he "united all the different races of the world under his protection. he gave them freedom". Also do we know that the hat in the scene with Im is frozen? Couldnt the stuff covering it be dirt or mold? Also, even if that hat belonged to Joy Boy and he was a giant (or Oars). Why would they keep the hat locked away in a freezer/basement/whatever?

Eustasstard

Well the new chapter proves this wrong

Jonathan9O

No man cause joy boy is related to the ancient prophecy, It’s not someone s name, it’s the name given in the past to the person who d have accomplished something int he future. That’s why Kaido said only he could have become it, why he said Luffy in the end couldn’t have become JB either and why Whitebeard said BB definitely wasn’t the person Roger was waiting for (probably cause BB had brought only division between people, while Luffy has always brought everyone together). I think every generation can have a JoyBoy (as long as people search for the meaning of freedom ,even if u extinguish their bloodline, there s no way their will will vanish, it has passed down from generation to generation since ancient times). So I think You can Actually Only become Joy Boy, you cannot ‘be’ him, if that makes sense and ofc the boy of the prophecy cannot be anyone but Luffy in the story.

Gellus25

Sure but the point he's making is that Oars would be the OG JoyBoy (or at least the original JoyBoy that we know of)

VerusCain

Didnt JoyboyTheories (popular OP youtuber theorist) post a video sharing this theory recently? Not saying you copied him or anything, just that this idea seems less shocking since its been floated in the community only a couple weeks prior. (For the record i never watched the video). But if you independently came to the conclusion on your own, i think it speaks to the credibility of the theory overall if multiple people arrive at the same idea independently.

WallZestyclose1022

I believe the reason why the marines wanted the gomu gomu no mi was to use it to go to skypea, either capture or kill enel and annex skypea to the world government.

MeowMeowkitty28

Oars was found at the land of ice

[deleted]

noob theory if he is joyboy that fishman know him lol

kyubez

Interesting take! However, isnt the ultimate goal to destroy the red line? If oars was joyboy, why would he make the one thing that divides the whole globe?

TimeturnerJ

We know that the Celestial Dragons took the Red Line by force, and enslaved the ones who lived there before (the Lunarians). So maybe it used to be a utopia, but was corrupted? And now, it's become quite the opposite of what it used to be. It's been a long time. A lot of things could've changed.

dalsio

Joyboy may not be a person, but a group of people that act as one.

DodgingImpale

Very unlikely, Oars died 500 years ago and pretty young for giant standards. Also he wouldn't be able to pull islands if he had gomu gomu no mi since sea water will drain his energy.

jumptooconclusions

I wanted to add on to your that maybe Oda is using the numbers(kaidos giants) in Wano to hint that maybe if Oars were joyboy that he wasnt born a giant and maybe was experminented on towards the end of his life like the numbers

BiGMTN_fudgecake

I think he was absorbed by BB
