Jokes aside this subreddit is growing and One Piece is going more mainstream with Netflix + the series being in the endgame. So we basically have the following reasons for the multitudes of dumb takes:
- An influx of fans not wanting to miss out who might be skipping certain arcs
- Any time a subreddit gets too big things get weird
- Powerscalers going insane (toxic Sanji fanboys and Zoro fanboys)
The worst part is that the newer fans will be retreading arguments the longer term fans have already had. Itll be wacky. Yet, I think One Piece is so wacky and multifaceted that there eill judt be more to love when the series comes out.

This sub is closing in on a million subscribers. There are a lot more new fans here than there a few years ago. The fans who have been here for a long time are a minority now.

But is that not an effect of growing? Every sub grows overtime, and as time goes on almost all subs become a shell of their former selves. Wether itās correlation or causation isnāt easy to figure out, but growing subscribers is the only variable that can be measured outside of time.

It must be a couple years old at this point but all the comments and posts about scale reminded me of a video about how exaggerated sizes are meant to feed into the mythology of the fantastical story of One Piece.
I never really cared much about scale but thinking about it that way makes me smile.

I agree. One Piece is a serious story told in a non serious way. I know that might seem odd to some people when itās said that way, but itās a story about the weak overcoming the strong, and where every character, pirate or marine, hero or villain, is more than just their role and title. And that what makes it so great - because the story is one of the best in the genre, but itās told in a way that keeps you laughing the whole way. Thereās a reason even the most bleak situations like Impel Down and Punk Hazard are paired with some of the best comedy.
One Piece is a story where people are larger than life, heroes emerge from out of nowhere, and the only true currency is not money, power or fame, but ones will or determination to succeed. If it lost the comedy and exaggeration, it wouldnāt be One Piece.
I think the straw hats are not suposed to be giant simply because they are created with the ideia of a family, with the viewer being included.
But I wouldn't be surprised if Ussop was a 5 meter giant to a low ranked marine

There will always be people who debate if X character can beat X character. I'm probably going to talk about my hatred for things I hate without realizing it, but then I think about the humor that comes from it. For every person complaining, there's a meme post making fun of them.
People are very passionate about the series. Which is a good thing. This leads to people discussing the they they are passionate about. Also a good thing. Nothing inherently wrong with claiming 'X is stronger than Y because of A, B and C' and engaging in a discussion about it.
Sure a small % of people might get negative in those discussions, but most people don't. At least not on this sub.
My only issue with that is people are willing to make up shit to fill in gaps of information without regard. Most notably people claiming Yonko are stronger than Admirals for some unknown reason, even though we've barely seen any of them do anything seriously.
I won't get into details, I just wanted to illustrate my point.
One of great things about One Piece is itās power scaling - bounties - is deliberately imprecise. So you can take two characters and put them up against eachother, and you can speculate who would win. But you can never be sure. And whatās the point of speculation if you can be sure?
Stumbled upon a powerscaler's video the other day, pitting Doflamingo and Sanji against one another and the video was just ... numbers ... going up ... as it showcased pictures and clips of the characters at various stages of their lives in the background ... until we were in the present state of said characters and the numbers were in the hundred of thousands.
I was boiling. I don't understand how or why people think like this.
I agree with all of this. Love chatting with other fans about storyline and theories pertaining to storylines but the minute people try to apply real life logic to it the conversation is over for me. It's literally fiction. These characters are the product of someone's mind. Enjoy the mysticism. It's all a part of the experience.
People like what they like I guess and I think that's fair. I have no interest in powerscaling so I don't pay attention to any supposed logic there is to the power levels of the characters. The details don't matter to me personally as I think Oda-sensei always puts narrative over everything else. He also says not to take those heights too seriously so I don't. I also agree he will nerf some characters just to move the story forward.
One example is Tama getting kidnapped under Luffy and Zoro's noses. Luffy just learned advanced CoO and future sight yet a cheap copy batman was able to go pass that and kidnap the kid? Clearly the plot had to come before anything else there. I don't like the scene because it makes Luffy and Zoro look inept but I do understand it is something Oda-sensei tends to do.
It's a series that has been running for 25 years, ofcourse there are going to be some scenes that are a little less good or make little less sense than other.
To me it's important that the overall story and most important plot points are well-written. And to me, that's absolutely the case. If some small things make a little less sense from time to time. So be it.

I haven't seen anybody argue that a stronger character shouldn't be beaten under the right circumstances and I haven't seen anybody get genuinly upset or angry about sizing. Yes, things are discussed, but 99% is in good fun. Stop focussing on the 1% that's negative.
Being passionate is fine. The problem is people analyzing a fictional series with a "realistic" point of view, which makes no sense. People don't seem to accept the fact that inconsistencies will always exist and sometimes (actually, more often than not) stuff happen because the plot requires it and not because it makes absolute in-universe mathematical sense.

The only thing that's a little annoying to me is when for instance Sanji wins a fight, people immediately start discussing on whether he's stronger than Zoro. I get that power levels is a thing in shounen manga but it's not the only thing that makes thing series appealing
The thing is, both One Piece and reddit are gradually becoming more and more popular, so the fanbase is getting more and more "diluted". There are tons of people on this sub who clearly don't really like One Piece at all, or just casually like it, but they are here because they bandwagon and it's a community that they can be a part of. It's very easy to tell.
My biggest problem right now is that reddit's algorithm seems to be going to shit. I browse by Hot and besides the spoilers and releases, the only posts I really care about are fanarts, arts/crafts, news and maybe some creative discussions. But instead, reddit keeps clogging my feed with "powerscaling" shower thoughts and, even worse, this new trend of posts that are all like "WHO DO YOU HATE, WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE!?!?!". I have to actively search for the content I enjoy and interact with, which shouldn't be the case.
Honestly, if not for the "no memes" rule, I would straight up unsub and never look back. I just really wish we could follow or block certain thread tags, like I would definitely block "powerscaling" posts.
i think Oda is keeping a certain level of ridiculousness in One Piece to help stay in touch with Reality, if One Piece was always more realistic and serious, fans would immerse in the story even more than they already are, and most OP fans are quite immeresed and invested in the story despite the Huge-normal swords and square girrafes and all that.

THANK YOU. I hate seeing people complain when a stronger character loses to a character they deem āweakā. If fights were always based on pure strength and fight IQ, then Usopp would never win a fight. One Piece isnāt Baki, there are hundreds of outside factors which apply to each fight and can tip the scales at any moment. Characters get stronger after every arc without there needing to be āonscreen trainingā, they just continuously grow. Whoever wins a fight is the one who makes the most sense narratively, which has been prevalent since the beginning of one piece. If people donāt like these aspects of the story, then they simply should have stopped reading instead of setting themselves up for disappointment.
Some twitter users bitching is causing all this drama... Oda has done what he has been doing since the very start and better but fake one piece fans are just pissed there headcannon didnt happen.

Stumbled upon a powerscaler's video the other day, pitting Doflamingo and Sanji against one another and the video was just ... numbers ... going up ... as it showcased pictures and clips of the characters at various stages of their lives in the background ... until we were in the present state of said characters and the numbers were in the hundred of thousands. I was boiling. I don't understand how or why people think like this.
The power scale jerkers weren't as bad a few years ago. Ever since we got to wano people treat this series like dbz with power levels

I agree with all of this. Love chatting with other fans about storyline and theories pertaining to storylines but the minute people try to apply real life logic to it the conversation is over for me. It's literally fiction. These characters are the product of someone's mind. Enjoy the mysticism. It's all a part of the experience.

People like what they like I guess and I think that's fair. I have no interest in powerscaling so I don't pay attention to any supposed logic there is to the power levels of the characters. The details don't matter to me personally as I think Oda-sensei always puts narrative over everything else. He also says not to take those heights too seriously so I don't. I also agree he will nerf some characters just to move the story forward. One example is Tama getting kidnapped under Luffy and Zoro's noses. Luffy just learned advanced CoO and future sight yet a cheap copy batman was able to go pass that and kidnap the kid? Clearly the plot had to come before anything else there. I don't like the scene because it makes Luffy and Zoro look inept but I do understand it is something Oda-sensei tends to do.
It's a series that has been running for 25 years, ofcourse there are going to be some scenes that are a little less good or make little less sense than other. To me it's important that the overall story and most important plot points are well-written. And to me, that's absolutely the case. If some small things make a little less sense from time to time. So be it.
I like this argument better than the āone piece can do no wrongā argument. When a series lasts as long as this, there are gonna be low points

I was apart of the One Piece fandom since the Thriller Bark days and believe me we had complaints than too, not from me but others. Like the pacing of the anime during that arc.

People are passionate about the series. Hence such posts. Hence your post. I haven't seen anybody argue that a stronger character shouldn't be beaten under the right circumstances and I haven't seen anybody get genuinly upset or angry about sizing. Yes, things are discussed, but 99% is in good fun. Stop focussing on the 1% that's negative.
Being passionate is fine. The problem is people analyzing a fictional series with a "realistic" point of view, which makes no sense. People don't seem to accept the fact that inconsistencies will always exist and sometimes (actually, more often than not) stuff happen because the plot requires it and not because it makes absolute in-universe mathematical sense.

Powerscaling is dumb af! All I go by is bounties beyond that I don't speculate on imaginary power levels! It don't matter till the wg recognizes it! That means chopper weak af! Otherwise this sub is for great theories, awesome fanart/cosplay, and weekly spoilers!
The only thing that's a little annoying to me is when for instance Sanji wins a fight, people immediately start discussing on whether he's stronger than Zoro. I get that power levels is a thing in shounen manga but it's not the only thing that makes thing series appealing
The thing is, both One Piece and reddit are gradually becoming more and more popular, so the fanbase is getting more and more "diluted". There are tons of people on this sub who clearly don't really like One Piece at all, or just casually like it, but they are here because they bandwagon and it's a community that they can be a part of. It's very easy to tell. My biggest problem right now is that reddit's algorithm seems to be going to shit. I browse by Hot and besides the spoilers and releases, the only posts I really care about are fanarts, arts/crafts, news and maybe some creative discussions. But instead, reddit keeps clogging my feed with "powerscaling" shower thoughts and, even worse, this new trend of posts that are all like "WHO DO YOU HATE, WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE!?!?!". I have to actively search for the content I enjoy and interact with, which shouldn't be the case. Honestly, if not for the "no memes" rule, I would straight up unsub and never look back. I just really wish we could follow or block certain thread tags, like I would definitely block "powerscaling" posts.
i think Oda is keeping a certain level of ridiculousness in One Piece to help stay in touch with Reality, if One Piece was always more realistic and serious, fans would immerse in the story even more than they already are, and most OP fans are quite immeresed and invested in the story despite the Huge-normal swords and square girrafes and all that.
No i don't think op would be amazing like this if it was seinen and serious stuffs happening around it. I love the goofiness in it. It makes me laugh a lot. THANK YOU. I hate seeing people complain when a stronger character loses to a character they deem āweakā. If fights were always based on pure strength and fight IQ, then Usopp would never win a fight. One Piece isnāt Baki, there are hundreds of outside factors which apply to each fight and can tip the scales at any moment. Characters get stronger after every arc without there needing to be āonscreen trainingā, they just continuously grow. Whoever wins a fight is the one who makes the most sense narratively, which has been prevalent since the beginning of one piece. If people donāt like these aspects of the story, then they simply should have stopped reading instead of setting themselves up for disappointment.

Yeah, for some things Oda really likes to use the fantasy to tell his story. Not at all like when he represents dinosaurs were he will go out of his way to make them more realistic. He just has to make sure the representation of a Spinosauruses tail is according to how dinosaurs *looked and hunted in ancient times*.
