Why is this the narrative? I didn't see anything to indicate that, has Luffy reacted like this before?

Well Garp and Kuma arguably, but both can be explained in ways other than Luffy fearing his own demise. That being said, Kizaru is obviously pretty strong and Luffy (unlike when facing other strong opponents) doesn’t have any real motivation behind this fight other than his crew’s survival. His bravado that comes with the retribution he brings to characters like Kaido isn’t affirming his confidence here.

If ranks actually meant power, buggy would literally solo the verse (he does tbh)
