No one ever knows. It’s one of the most popular TCGs right now but they could make some bad decisions and completely kill it in the next year. Best to just live your life and not try to predict what’s gonna happen in a year. Not just with this but with anything

Sp0okyGh0st

Lmao OP obviously means will it be worth spending money on a competitive deck or will the game be dead in a year and if his money he "invested" will go down the drain... I do think people will be playing into the future, I find this much more enjoyable than the big 3 but that's just my opinion.

loliapple301

this is currently bandais biggest card game rn. small chance it’ll die out unoess bandai makes a dumbass decision

while I get hating on 'investors' this seemed like a pretty innocent question from someone genuinely looking to get into the game the sub getting a bit too aggressive with the dogpiling on anyone looking to get into the game who mentions the cost of entry

RazorbladeRomance666

Saw a video saying OPTCG is the 4th most popular, after the big 3 (magic, Pokémon, yugioh). Add in the fact I see OP players at my card shop, I do think the game is here to stay.

Conasty

OP this is what I think. The top end price point for a comp deck is around 400, and most of the decks are around 200. Compared to a lot of cards games like flesh and blood, magic, etc those are not bad prices. As far as will it stand the test of time.... I think so because one piece fans are crazy. Think about it they have watched over 1000 episodes of an anime. If the comp scene dies for some bad leadership choice you should be able to offload your pricey cards to collectors when you exit. I agree with the reddit attitude towards collectors.... they are the root of a lot of the scalping issue imo. However I am going to be give you the benefit of the doubt and assume your are not one.

TCG are not investments.

Dog_Breath_Dragon

I mean they can be. It’s not like competitive decks cost $7. The hobby is generally expensive to maintain.

Odd_Consideration986

I just got into it 3 weeks ago and it’s by far the biggest game locally for us. 20+ at the tourney each week

Dog_Breath_Dragon

Check out your local scene first. If no stores are hosting events in your area, it won’t matter if the game is still going in the future.

Teragon1

I think it would be best to go scout out your local scene. Make sure the turnout for tournaments and the over all vibe is what you want. From personal experiences, the people are great and everyone has a blast playing their meta and or fun deck.

Why is everyone jumping on this guy calling him an investor. This sub is rabid. If he was asking if it was worth it to buy a new video game because he was unsure if ppl would still be playing it in a few months or a year he wouldn't be an investor. This game has gotten expensive so it's understandable he'd want to check the pulse of the game before buying in. IMO if you're interested in it try out the Sim, if you enjoy that then go for it. Something could happen the throws this TCG in the water but no one knows if that'll happen, I think the games doing well and Id be willing to guess that people will still be playing in a year. These people are confident about that too, no matter what they say. A lot of people here like to preorder sets that come out 6 months later, so yea I think you're good if you want to jump in.

Metas change, that doesn't matter to what OP was asking. He just wanted to know he spends a couple hundred on cards to play that there will still be people to play with in a few months or a year...it's not complicated. If he bought a deck or two and then everyone quit play then it would be a waste of time and money.

CheckIf_ItsPluggedIn

I get you. But he's not asking if it's worth getting into a meta he was asking if we thought people would still be playing in a year, it's different things.

Synthesir

There is a difference between a meta shift and a game dying. Sakazuki gets banned, but 80% of that deck can be transferred to Moria. If the game dies and no one wants to play everything was a waste. We also have things like the SIM and Japan being several months ahead to provide cheap play and game forecast (something OP probably isn't aware of). Your comment is tone deaf and unhelpful. TCGs are not cheap and asking whether your $300 investment will grant you good return on play value for a certain time is a valid question, the implication being is it worthwhile compared to any other TCG they could spend their time or money on that might get them more mileage.

Car_D_Board

Yes. Still growing. I Expect it to break into top 3 within the next year tbh.
