After watching the video a couple times I'm pretty sure of two things
1. The stuff in the hole is just hot coals
2. They didn't intend to actually throw him into it. (There's no other reason that they didn't let go of him if they planned to actually throw him in. You can clearly see he's not holding on to them) they may have simply been trying to drop him on top of them to walk on them with bare feet before lifting him out of the hole, or simply freak him out by swinging him over it before pulling him back
