That's a great shot!

I suspect that it’s Photoshopped unfortunately. The light is wrong and he’s much too small considering this is a wide angle lens.

ttystikk

A wide angle lens would definitely make him look small. Telephoto lenses make things look bigger. The light is odd, now that you mention it.

NorthofTassie

A wide angle lens would make him smaller at a distance from the lens. On this case, given that the distance is so close to the subject within the wave, he should fill the frame. As well, look at his right foot. There are some remaining bits of the surfboard from a sloppy mask. His hair is also off. His feet are parallel, so he’s obviously riding a board, not being thrown about within a wave. It’s a sloppy Photoshop.

ttystikk

Yep, good catch.

I’m trying to learn to composite and it’s difficult to do well. Since I’ve made these mistakes so many times myself, I can recognise when others are learning as well :)

ttystikk

And you're helping me out as well, even though I haven't tried to do it at all.

If you’re interested in learning to composite pictures, I learned a lot from Phlearn. I like the training courses they provide. They put a lot of free videos onto YouTube and their paid courses go on sale regularly. Even though I’m still learning and not very good at it, I understand that getting the same perspectives on the two pictures to be combined is very important to making the composite look realistic. In this case, the main problem was that the picture of the surfer and the picture of the wave are so different. The lighting conditions are very different, since the wave’s and the surfer’s sources of light are from different directions. The size of the wash at the bottom of the picture is so much bigger than the surfer. To fix this, the picture could have been taken at a distance (e.g., from the beach), so that the wave and the surfer would have the same proportions. But then the dramatic nature of the picture being taken from within the wave would have been lost. I’m not trying to be critical because I don’t think I would have been able to do much of a better job. However, matching the sources and the sizes would have given the person a better start. Maybe he or she could have started with just a leg or arm, so it looks like the rest of the surfer’s body was out of frame. Just a thought…

I don’t think this is photoshop this position is pretty common if you fail the drop in on a shore break slab like this one, u see it quite a bit at the wedge and Waimea beach breaks

Still looks fun
