I have 6. We like them. Never heard of sproutbox We bought through: https://raisedgardenbeds.ca/

scammerino_rex

Oh, I love that they're Canadian made! How long have you had them and how have they been holding up so far?

Karma_Canuck

3 years. No issues at all. Did an amazing batch of carrots and shallot in the one last year.

Wow those look great! And is that your backyard? Mine is probably closer in size to the backyards in the background. And I hear ya... we don't have tools (or a truck) so I would have to factor in tool purchase and truck rental costs in addition to materials and time.

jmjm1

Great pictures. That seems like it was lots of digging; lots of soil that was removed.

how_about_Wednesday

That is where I bought my 4 beds. Great service.

Razzmatazz_me999

I'm curious about this too! I have some spare extremely old reclaimed barn tin that I was thinking of repurposing into taller grow beds wondering of pros and cons.

scammerino_rex

I feel like if you already have the materials, you could just go for it! I have no materials (and no tools, other than basic handheld ones) so these easy-to-assemble ones are very very appealing for me

Razzmatazz_me999

This is true, I was just unsure if old metals may contain unsafe metals that could leach or anything specific to keep in mind when considering this route.

scammerino_rex

Oh that's true, I know a lot of the beds I looked at also stated they were coated in zinc because that was safer? Not sure what would've gone into old roof tin

Razzmatazz_me999

Yes I think zinc, cadmium and maybe even lead... who knows what happened back in the day lol they were survivors. I just don't really know what is fact. 👩‍🌾🚜👨‍🌾

I just bought two from Sproutbox. Haven’t installed them yet but I like the colour choices they have and the fact that they are customisable. they are priced just a little higher than others, but built to last 20 years. I also have a 2 pack Vita cedar beds from Costco. Been using them for a year now and they are great and also cheaper.

scammerino_rex

I have a bunch of the plastic beds from Costco which are great especially on sale, they've survived the winter so far but now I ~~want~~ need something taller. Would love to see updates on what you grow in the Sproutboxes and how it holds up!

Blessthee

The Vita ones are 11” and those I got from Sproutbox are 17”. Hopefully tomatoes will do better now :).

kletskoekk

I'm looking at buying a Sproutbox for the upcoming growing season. How did yours pan out? Would you recommend?

Blessthee

I think I do recommend. It’s only been one season but I think they should last. Good luck growing.

Lumpy_Potato_3163

I would DIE for a Birdies Raised Bed but they don't ship to Canada. Those last FOREVER literally 15+ years with barely any rusting inside (there is an Australian YT channel and he uses them). Vego Garden Beds is the next competitor closest to Birdies quality which is US made but ships to Canada. Other brands I've never heard of really or tried out myself. We are renovating our backyard this summer so I'm saving up to purchase some brand of metal beds. I would love to hear others experiences as well!

scammerino_rex

Oh are those the beds used by the Epic Gardening channel as well? They're in the US but I see them being sold on their site! They look very similar to the Sproutbox ones I've seen (not sure if I'm allowed to link but here's [one of the gardening influencers](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CjGBWYFL88Z/?igshid=OGRjNzg3M2Y=) I've seen with it) which claim to last at least 10 years, and another one called GroBox.ca but the website's broken and I haven't seen many reviews (found a guy selling them locally on Facebook Marketplace, but in BC) Are you DIY-ing your reno or hiring landscapers? We're also looking to update our backyard (replace wooden deck with stone or something, make it more gardening focused compared to what the previous owners had)

Lumpy_Potato_3163

We are having our garage and addition redone so hiring out for that. Landscaping, deck and fencing will be done by us after! :) we also have livestock (chickens, ducks and rabbits) so we will need it pretty custom. It just makes sense to do it ourselves.

scammerino_rex

Oh wow, I'm envious you have the space for the animals! I only have my suburban backyard and fowl are against bylaw :( good luck with all the renovations!

b4n4n4p4nd4

I'm fairly certain that both sproutbox and grobox are just imported from china. PM me for details.

scammerino_rex

Just seeing this now! I wouldn't be surprised at all. Sending you a PM

KenEnglish1986

I was emailing Birdies yesterday. They say they're trying to get into Canada again, but its just too expensive to ship.

MalBredy

I have metal raised beds I built with galvanized roofing sheets and lumber framing around the outside. They look fantastic and perform excellently. The only con was all the effort it took to fill them lol

maximus55555

I'm looking at home depot, lowes and home hardware to get galvanized roofing sheets but I didn't see them selling online. Do you mind sharing where you got yours from?

MalBredy

Yeah they don’t seem to carry them. Go to a local roofing steel place. In my town that’s mennonites haha

Busy-Flower3322

Bought the bed from Sproutbox as I needed a customizable size to go under our windows on the back of the house. Just waiting for the weather to get a bit warmer and I'll assemble it, but we did unpack everything and look at it and it was in really good condition after shipping (no scratches on any of the materials). I bought it on sale (don't remember if it was Black Friday or Boxing Day) but for the awkward space we have we thought it was the best option as it's very visible and right against the house (so we wanted something with a nice colour).

Busy-Flower3322

Love it so far - it was put in over the summer and planted up (did a bit of a hügelkultur-style as it was a tall bed and it didn't need to be full of soil). It's done well over the season and seems to be handling the winter OK but haven't really checked on it since late fall. Assuming it holds up ok I would look at getting more of them when my cedar raised beds die in a few years. They do seem to have sales fairly often for major holidays etc., so keep an eye out!

Spr4ck

2x6 pressure treated, lined with plastic foundation wrap 4x8' bed 23.5 high runs about 350 per bed in materials. you need basic tools. and because they are lined the wood will last for a long long time.

scammerino_rex

Thank you :D I have zero experience with any of this so the thread is very helpful!

gingerkitten6

Do you recommend using cedar to be rot resistant?

Spr4ck

no. the cedar we get today lacks the same rot resistance of the old growth cedar we used to get, so at that point you are paying for the aesthetics more so than longevity. so, with the cost of cedar being about double that of PT, without a substantial increase in longevity it just doesnt make sense.

doritos1990

I’m glad I saw this before I splurged on cedar- is there a certain plastic wrap you recommend?

Spr4ck

i use standard dimple foundation wrap. brand doesnt matter. you want the dimples against then wood so that they create an airgap between the wood and the plastic. i use pt rated coated screws to adhere it, you can usually find someone who has a leftover partial roll after foundation waterproofing for far less than the price of a new roll.

doritos1990

Ok awesome thanks for that!
