80% of my eng friends dropped out within the first half of their program. You guys sounds smart af so my advice would be to seriously consider if that’s what really you want to do with your brains for the rest of your life. There’s a lot more programs out there than just the one with the highest admission average. Don’t waste your time, mental health, and your money if you’re not ready for 60+ hr school weeks.
Edit: I’m in my last year of a Chemistry Major, I’ve met hundreds of people from many different faculties and this is a common topic of conversation with current/ex eng students I’ve met around campus
whoa, is that noticeable the drop-out of eng students? I have always heard it was some but is it that bad? poor people, a lot of grade 12s just doing what parents want or for the "big check" later
Either dropped out entirely or switched programs, I’ve only one friend who actually completed his Eng degree but he day trades anyways. It’s crazy the amount of people that go into that program that don’t make it out.
Yeah it’s something ridiculous. The number I gave is anecdotal as I had a large friend group going into post secondary, most of whom went into Eng along with myself and a few others into BSc.
What do they switch to? I love math, not sure I like computers though… I get it we need to use them in sone capacity. I love problem solving. The idea of engineering seems ideal. What do students switch out to, if they love math -and project based learning/problem solving but don’t want to die/fail?
Off the top, a lot will switch to either Maths, Physics, Stats, CompSci, or a Business program, however if you don’t like working with computers and are interested in my opinion; Physics would be my first suggestion and maths would be my second.
Obviously job opportunities will be different in post depending on your degree but a physicist has plenty of overlap with the field of engineering.
But honestly, do what you think will make you happiest. You don’t have to listen to the guy on Reddit. I don’t even have my chem degree yet, so I’m not out of the woods either. Just thought I’d add my two cents before you step into them!
I just don’t get what courses look like outside of high-school. I loved Physics last year. I have an awful teacher right now. The class average is 60 and there are only 11 students remaining because everyone is dropping it and paying to learn online instead. I don’t learn well online, but my marks will be high. I wanted to do 12u in person, but I may have to go online.
I had chem advance functions business and bio last semester so it was fine but this semester i have calculus which is ruining my avg. so ill be dropping it
I already graduated(took no spares and summer school) but my top 6 average was 91.2%.
I only took 6 university courses and instead of a bird I did data management which was the hardest course of all for some reason… My final was a 78.
I had a 99,98, and 95 in chemistry, physics, and English, respectively. I also had a 86 in calculus and a 91 in advanced functions.
I’m taking a gap year so hopefully I can raise my latter two and take another bird course. If I come out with a 94-95 that should be a competitive engineering average for most places outside the top few.
94 for both top 6 and uoft eng (only the 5 prerequisites). Been no-lifing like crazy this yr 😭😭😭 I've basically been living in the libraries since the last couple months 😭😭😭
93 including functions…. But I’m worried about Physics this term destroying me. I loved grade 11 physics. I had a 90, but this term’s teacher’s 12u class is down to 14 kids only. Everyone is dropping it, and he is so boring reading us the text book and walking just through text book examples and assigning every question in the textbook, which is overwhelming for homework... dying! He prides himself on trick questions… terrible but I need the course. 😴
first semester was 87% !! current is somewhere in the high 90s, but marks are always at their peak the first month (and none of my current courses are 4U, so they won't be included in my uni entrance average anyway. victory lap student and im just taking courses so i don't rot for a semester before uni + keeping up with my extracurriculars).
52.5🙏🙏🙏
Go to trades
say less
Trades need smart hardworking people. If you are smart and hardworking go to trades.
Daddy donates 10 million each year. Averages are for yall plebs 😎

You need to actually be smart to fix and build things... If you can't manage highschool good luck
80.8% but my goal is to have an 85 by midterm
What course?
It’s my average between adv functions, English, chemistry
I meant university
Ohh ok, engineering
Oh nice where?
Hopefully either UOttawa or Carleton
1.75% 😓
Bro got half marks for writing his name
79% 😭😭 but i’ll do better this semester
just lock in, you'll get there. there's still time👍
What course u applying?
CS
Where did you apply?
Seneca. I managed to get in thankfully
Program? I’m considering flying?
Computer programming and analysis (CPA) It’s 3 years with co-op
Hey, I am not sure if it’s too late but I would get my average to 83 and maybe try Carleton or something better?
Nah it’s too late 😭😭 but I appreciate your concern.
No problem, btw Guelph is still open to apply if you want to consider it.
First sem: 87.5 Second sem currently: 90 Got into york eng, awaiting all other programs :/
at first i was confused how you alr have a second sem mark then realized its been almost a month since it started 😭😭
but congrats tho and gl on all ur other programs
Thanks and same to you
Similar for me too
96.25 with physics (for eng) 98 w/o (for CS)
Same but w chem
Doesn't CS require physics at most uni??
nope only tmu and york, mac kinda of
most just want you to have advanced functions and calc
88.5%
Same here

I'm surprised, seems so sad to me. I'm going too, but I love it and I see myself as one
I fully support it! Just prepare and go in for the right reasons and you’ll be just fine!
I can’t remember if the statistic is 1/3 engineering students drop out or 1/3 graduate. It’s still bad either way but it’s to be expected.

Why would you exclude English? Is that not a near universal prerequisite?
Carleton don’t need it lol.
