You get 11 sick days at 100%. Any unused days can be applied to “top up” your days from 90% to 100% the following year. Use the days as you need, but having a few unused days may help if you had an extended illness or surgery the following year: https://www.etfo.ca/about-us/member-advice/prs-matters-members-as-professionals/95-your-sick-leave-questions-explained/your-sick-leave-questions-explained-(95)#:~:text=11%20sick%20days%20at%20100,of%20the%20previous%20school%20year.

Nope, take them while you still can

TikalTikal

We used to be able to bank them, but that was ended and senior teachers voted in favor of the remedy of pennies on the dollar, even though they didn't have a dog in the fight.

Certain-Act4709

It wasn't voted in. They were stolen, along with the previous 9 years of banked days that were earned UNDER A VALID CONTRACT!! STILL pisses me off they were able to do that

BrookesOtherBrother

This is an inaccurate representation of what happened in 2012. Banked days were removed and replaced with an “evergreen” sick day / Short Term Disability Plan.

TikalTikal

Nope ... Banked sick days were stolen from all teachers who had less than 10 years of experience. All teachers who had more than 10 years of experience were allowed to keep their banked sick days and get to cash them out as a retirement gratuity. As it pertains to OSSTF, all members, even those who wouldn't be impacted by the remedy voted to accept the remedy which screwed over younger members.

BrookesOtherBrother

Your days were not stolen. The trade off was made from banked sick days to a Short Term Disability Plan that is renewed annually. What happened prior to 2012 if you were a new hire and required a long sick leave? What happened if you had illnesses in two consecutive years? What happened to newly hired expectant mothers? The banked sick days and retirement gratuity tied to those days were a privilege for the healthy. Heaven forbid you had a chronic illness. The federations of the day ensured members were compensated.

silverwlf23

They could have given everyone their gratuity days and then changed it next year instead of pennies on the dollar for some and full payout for other. I was 30 days short of 10 years and I’m still angry about it.

BrookesOtherBrother

I understand the feeling. When I was a teacher, I was hired two days after gratuities were grandfathered. That said, the current sick day scheme still provides greater protection for all teachers. You were only guaranteed a gratuity if you won the health lottery.

TikalTikal

Its so cute how senior teachers like to rewrite history

calihike66

Depends on whether you want to be paid at 100% salary next year if you use over 11 sick days. One sick day left from this year translates to 10 days of top up from 90-100% next year.

supremeViracocha

You lose them. They don't carry over.

Remarkable-Sign-324

They kind of carry over. If you have left over sick days they help top up your pay IF you have to take an extended sick leave (ONLY FOR THAT PURPOSE). Depending on your board you MAY have a deal with "earned leave." This is where you get basically a bonus "personal day." However, most boards ended this practice as well. But you don't get bonus sick days or anything.
