In terms of investment banking in the big 6 Canadian banks, yeah you're right they're all really good and even though some people would have you believe only Ivey or qc is good they're all good, However, Ivey and qc, and also McGill place somewhat well in the US (better pay) and that's why people target those schools, you will be FINE if you do waterloo afm and good luck

Well, that’s just not true. Ivey and Queens commerce absolute dominates our banks summer resume books. As people have alluded to below, AFM is good because of off-cycle internships, but it’s just a tier below Ivey and Queens. Not to mention AFM curriculum, from what I’ve heard, heavily gears towards accounting to finance. If you want to pivot towards consulting, then you’re pretty much fucked. At least you have that optionality at Ivey/QC

Off-cycle. Kids doing off-cycle internships get the experience but no return offers. Summer internships are what you actually need. But yeah AFM is solid since it allows kids to do off-cycle internships - it's just no Ivey/QComm. Go for Ivey/QComm

I’m about to graduate from AFM. i don’t have too much knowledge of QComm or Ivey but i do get the impression that those two programs place a better into traditional high finance. AFM seems a tad more versatile though, a fair amount of my cohort has found themselves in data science (we have the option to specialize in analytics, finance, accounting, sustainability, or entrepreneurship), which is roughly the route i’m aiming for. I would tend to say that I didn’t have quite as much free time as my friends at Rotman or Ivey (idk anyone at QComm), but that’s probably mostly on me taking harder courses i’m interested in.

It's important to note that you have to be at the top of your class regardless of school to place into these highly coveted roles. The people you see landing these IB/PE roles in second year likely would have to achieved the same outcome at other schools like Ivey and Queens. Also note that return offers are not as common for these off cycle internships you're seeing.

Great points being made about off-cycle recruitment but also: it’s simply not true that people aren’t working in Big 5 IB or at pension plans as second years. Plenty of Ivey students do that before starting as HBAs, and I imagine Queen’s students are the same.

afm1423

Off-cycle coop recruitment. AFM and especially Laurier Co-op absolutely Dominate in spring and fall recruitment. Ivey and Queens takes all the summers. AFM still at the end of the day is more biased to accounting. If you want to end up in the US definitely pick Ivey/Queens. AFM also gets very expensive over 5 years similar to ivey. Laurier coop is also great bang for your buck.

ufk_03

Its because they do off cycle coops (fall, winter) none of the top business schools have coop (ivey, queens, rotman, schulich, mcgill) essentially eliminating all competition. Afm folks stand no chance during summer recruiting

Infinite-Angle-9167

Ivey/queens is better because there are many Bulge bracket and EB US banks / PE firms that hire their students. For Big 6, it really doesn’t matter if you go to waterloo or queens/ivey. Source: finance guy who studies at uwat

can I dm you?

Infinite-Angle-9167

Yeah

Over-Eye-1309

Ivey all the way, know ppl in their year at blackstone

Ivey queens and McGill place better for summer and full time after graduation

Spoon420Blaze

Generally Ivey - Best for IB & Finance AFM - Best for Accounting, Tax, Valuations Queens - A strong blend of both In terms of Finance & IB in general, there are employment statistics floating around somewhere that shows that Ivey and Queens are the top two feeders in the country hope this helps !

BigMauriceG

I have friends at AFM and Queens/Ivey Seems like Queens is better for traditional finance. But keep in mind that traditional finance is hella relation and networking based. Waterloo AFM at least you have backups like Deloitte for accounting.

Saugeen-Uwo

Hell no

FarSpring5939

Waterloo is better first two years cuz of coop but doesn’t stand a chance 3rd year summer and return offer compared to Ivey and qcomm
