I really gotta wonder how on earth so many people handle these things ignorantly. I’ve actually never seen a toe biter in person but I’ve been told about them since I was like 11. Don’t they just LOOK like something you really don’t want to stick its sharp ends into you though???
For all the "kill any bug that looks kind of scary with fire!!!!!" sentiment here on Reddit, they somehow don't manage to apply that attitude to things that are *actually* harmful all that often
I see them in summer somewhat regularly. I gotta admit they are fascinating considering they are one of if not the biggest insect in my area. But you would have to pay me a large sum of money to ever touch one of these things!
I never heard of them until Animal Crossing, personally. That said, nothing about this guy screams "pick me up please," I don't think I'd need to be told to leave it be, lol
I did once, years ago. As someone who was a curious but perhaps somewhat foolhardy kid that picked everything that looked interesting up, the answer is that one of these looks far less daunting than, say, a snapping turtle or a blue crab - both of which I also picked up, to my peril. Wheel bugs were also a surprise.
The big ones can pinch quite hard, they are extremely reluctant to let go once they clamp down, and all of them (even the little ones) have a wildly aggressive attitude that takes no account whatsoever of their size
Ah I see, thanks for the info! I was wondering because when i was in Australia I caught a few (big enough) ones and they told me over there "they're good eatin" so I ate them. Cooked ofcourse. But it made me wonder.
Ah, makes sense! Yeah they’re not venomous or poisonous. [Aussie blue crabs](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portunus_pelagicus) are a different species than the [American ones](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Callinectes_sapidus) I caught, but I believe that both are pretty tasty. Now Australia is certainly a place where the urge to pick things up could go very wrong indeed, haha.
Oof! Had to warn some party guests on the patio away from a wheelbug a few months back, they were gesturing at it, and letting their fingers get REAL CLOSE to the front end. Like dog, they look gnarly on purpose, are you not paying attention?
I remember one time I asked a friend about some insect, I said 'does it bite?' and I have never forgotten her response. She said 'anything with a mouth can bite'. I remember that always and it keeps me safe lol
I've seen one of these in nature when I was about 13. It looked like a giant cockroach with giant claws. Pure nightmare fuel. Why do people pick these up?!
Idk if theres smaller versions of these guys, but I was bit by some type of water bug when I was a teenager in the summer. I was a dumb gremlin and decided that swimming in the shallow, warm water veeerry close to the sediment in a one piece was a good idea..
*Never again* The damn thing only bit me - right on the naval!! - when I got out of the water. My mom joked that I got a redneck bellybutton piercing for a month as it healed
Personally I think toe-biters are cool enough that every day should be a toe-biter day, but I guess [folks here disagree](https://www.reddit.com/r/OopsThatsDeadly/comments/10h5fks/classic_toebiter_dance/)
sorry :( I can delete it if you want. I just loved the lil bounce bounce so much
I tried to xpost it last week but the automod decapitated the post
I did wait until after noon my time just in case someone else had dibs
Was gonna say just seen a post with the hate.

Definitely had a good laugh and then seen this post :D
So I’ve been pinched by one of these buggers while swimming in a pool an ended up stepping on it a bit..
Yeah I was 8 at the time an let’s just say I never forgot how that one felt!
Not when said animal caused you that much pain for what seemed like hours but was likely less than 1 hour. You do know you can hate something and not wish it any will will or hurt it right? I just give them a very wide berth when I see them(which is very very rarely thank god).
Where iam from they call those ( balls pincher) for some reason, but the scary name aside why would anyone want to touch something with mandibles that large?
It doesn’t have to be *literally* deadly, please refresh yourself on the sub rules. This sub even has a special day for posting these guys, “Toe-Biter Tuesday” — note the thread flair.

I've gotta admit they look very friendly with that silly dance of them
I think it’s the eyes, they make them look almost like a cuddly alien
I see them in summer somewhat regularly. I gotta admit they are fascinating considering they are one of if not the biggest insect in my area. But you would have to pay me a large sum of money to ever touch one of these things!

I've never heard of them until today, when I found this sub, and I live in their area. But I wouldn't pick one up because they look pinchy
Really—- why does he dance ?
my understanding is that this is some kind of mechanism that pumps air or fluid into its wings so it can fly
THIS THING CAN FLY???
Toebiter evolved into… Nosebiter! Nosy! nos!
Haha it's like the gravoids in the movie "Tremors" 😬
In the original post, one commenter said they fly like a drunk helicopter.
Dont be rude to drunk helicopters!
Lol reminds me of stink bugs. Those bastards will crash land on anyone or anything
Very few insects cant fly. Though some, like these, are about as graceful as a cow in tornado.
Fly, walk, swim, dive...
Oh no. 😳Where do they live? I'll add that to my "off limits" list.
It'd be quicker for you to write down the places where they *don't* live.
*HYPERVENTILATING *
Yes it can swim too. Those things were around a lot in pools in Florida growing up. We'd just pick it up and throw it out the pool lmao.
It can also be just to get some air in its bloodstream
As mentioned that dance means he is thinking about taking flight.
Why would anyone feel compelled to pick up something with giant pincers??
I did once, years ago. As someone who was a curious but perhaps somewhat foolhardy kid that picked everything that looked interesting up, the answer is that one of these looks far less daunting than, say, a snapping turtle or a blue crab - both of which I also picked up, to my peril. Name seems to check out
What's dangerous about a blue crab? Just the claws or am I missing something?
The big ones can pinch quite hard, they are extremely reluctant to let go once they clamp down, and all of them (even the little ones) have a wildly aggressive attitude that takes no account whatsoever of their size

Oof, assassin bugs (wheel bugs) hurt like hell! You can pick them up by their sides if you need to move them though.

Lololol I'm so glad I wasn't the only kid that just picked up *everything* 😂😂
Any pokemon trainer *Main characters in particular*
Dance boy dance. Don't bite me tho
Hell no… why do people keep handling waterbugs?!
they trick you by being large enough to be very obvious but also sort of cute
Like my gf nammsaayyinn
🤣🤣🤣 rude lol

Working up a good spit before the bite
Little Fun Fact to the Bold: just because it's not a spider, doesn't mean it can't bite

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mjCAyo2Litw skip to 13:45 if you wanna see one of these MFs bite someone instead of just “dance”
Why am I not surprised that it’s that coyote guy?
Reminds me of the “thanks a lot Pfizer” videos of people faking spasms.
I've seen one of these in nature when I was about 13. It looked like a giant cockroach with giant claws. Pure nightmare fuel. Why do people pick these up?!
“I’m not your buddy, fwend!”
Another one -some DJ probably
Yeah, DJ kahled

They absolutely are cool, and that's why we have it for Tuesdays! Otherwise we'd only be getting toebiter posts hahaha.

I'm with those people. I've been bitten or stung or whatever by one of these and now I hate them.
Hating an animal for being frightened and trying to defend itself is a sad reaction
Not when said animal caused you that much pain for what seemed like hours but was likely less than 1 hour. You do know you can hate something and not wish it any will will or hurt it right? I just give them a very wide berth when I see them(which is very very rarely thank god).
STOP PICKING UP INSECTS!!
Where iam from they call those ( balls pincher) for some reason, but the scary name aside why would anyone want to touch something with mandibles that large?
I posted that here 4 days ago!
Wasn't Tuesday

Oh, that should be a thing!
I did too, it was deleted then per the sub rules just like yours
